■ Reilections 1942-43 Louisiana Tech orewon T HIS is the Lagniappe for 1943—a book prepared during times of conflict and uncertainties, when college publications seem relatively unimportant. In using the armed service as a theme, the editor has attempted to captivate the spirit of American fight¬ ing men and women who now stand guard on the far-flung battle fronts of the world. F e s t i v i ties Kappa Alpha Zetas, pictured below, were responsible for the prize- winning car in the homecoming parade. Scenes from the parade are pictured here. Following the parade, the Tech Bulldogs entertained Southeastern on the gridiron, whipping the Lions by a large score. This marked Tech ' s final home game for the duration of the war. Who ' s Who Student body president, John Hol¬ land, known as Johnny to every¬ one, hails from Jonesboro. Johnny is active in all campus af¬ fairs and has very capably led the Tech student body in a suc¬ cessful war bonds and stamps campaign this year. He is also outstanding in Kappa Sigma and was vice - president of Junior Class. Anne Goyne has made Tech and Ruston proud of her in many ways by her continual honors. Past president of Kappa Delta, this year she is president of Pan- Hellenic Council. Other activi¬ ties of her social life are Kappa Sigma sweetheart, Tech queen at State Fair, maid of Homecoming Day, and a member of the Blue Jackets. Henry Monaghan ' s amiable smile typifies his personality. Majoring in engineering, Henry has made an outstanding record for himself at Tech, by his activities in Tau Chi Sigma, honorary chemistry fraternity; Delta Alpha Rho, hon¬ orary engineering fraternity; and by serving the Pi Kappa Alphas as their very able president. His home is in New Orleans. True Tech loyalty and enthusiasm is displayed by Margaret Mae Saunders of Shreveport. She h as been active in campus affairs since her first day of enrollment; for example, president of Theta Upsilon Sorority, former president of the Student Union, a member of the Blue Jackets, queen of Engineering Ball, and counselor on third floor of Harper Hall. At Tech! Outstanding in the history of Tech athletics is Johnny Perritt, who this year was captain of the Varsity football team. Perritt made the alternate L.I.C. team for 1941 and 1942, rating as one of the fastest backs in the confer¬ ence. At present he is serving as president of the T Club. He comes from Shreveport. Roberta Dillon has presided suc¬ cessfully as president of Wom¬ en ' s League, a job that holds cherished honor and ultimate re¬ sponsibility. Talented in many ways, Roberta is an English- Foreign Languages major but lends her musical ability when needed. She is active in Sigma Kappa, and Sigma Tau Delta, honorary English fraternity. Ath¬ ens is her home town. Miriam Davis of Minden, better known as Mimi, has had numer¬ ous successes at Tech. Now president of Sigma Kappa Sor¬ ority, she is past president of Harper Hall and was outstand¬ ing in campus government. An Education major, Mimi is also ac¬ tive in the International Relations Club. James Files, of Vivian, familiarly known as Jimmy, excells in jour¬ nalism and serves Tech as an alert and capable editor of the Tech Talk. As you would expect, Jimmy is a journalism major. He is also active in Alpha Lambda Tau Fraternity and the Student Senate. Who ' s Who Donald Boyette, a speech major, has become renowned on Tech campus by his outstanding religi¬ ous activities. Besides being a capable president of the Baptist Student Union, he is vice-presi¬ dent of the Y.M.C.A., a member of the Tech Theater Players, senior advisor for the freshmen in 1942- ' 43, and is active in de¬ bating. His home is Winnfield. Ruthmary Voss, Tech beauty of 1942- ' 43, majors in Sociology and hails from Gloster. Ruthmary has made a name for herself by be¬ ing Blue Jacket president, Kappa Sigma sweetheart, rush chairman of Kappa Delta Sorority, and a maid to Miss La. Tech at the State Fair. No one doubts the ability of James Kelly when they find out he is serving three outstanding engineering organizations as president. He leads Delta Alpha Rho Fraternity, Engineers ' Asso¬ ciation and Chemical Engineers, as well as belonging to Tau Chi Sigma Fraternity. James is also outstanding in the Y.M.C.A. ac¬ tivities and was a knight at the Engineers ' Ball. He hails from Shreveport. Elayne Odom of Shreveport, a home economics major, heads Kappa Delta Sorority as its presi¬ dent. Elayne has served two years as a senior advisor, is a member of Tech Theater Players, Blue Jackets, and is an Alpha Lambda Tau sweetheart. In 1941- ' 42 she was Organizations Editor of the Lagniappe and in 1942- ' 43 was Features Editor. At Tech Faye Russell, a fine president of Kappa Alpha Zeta Sorority, is from Winnfield. James H. Martin, known as Buddy, is from Delhi and majors in journalism. He is serving his second year as editor of the Lag- niappe, having been sports edi¬ tor for the publication during his sophomore year. This year he is sports editor for the Tech Talk. He is also President of the Theta Xi fraternity, a member of the Student Union, and. a member of Gamma Epsilon, honorary scho¬ lastic fraternity. Edna Earle Carroll Baugh of Rus- ton has distinguished herself in many organizations while at Tech. She is Society Editor for Tech Talk, a member of Theta Upsilon, former Features Editor of Lagniappe, member of the Stu¬ dent Union, and Tech Theater Players. JTi Bob Irvine Snapshots Editor The Lagniappe Joe Rigsby Art Editor Elayne Odom Features Editor James H. Martin Editor-in-Chiei David Brown Class Editor Members of the staff formulate plans for the 1943 Lagniappe under the direction of the editor Staff for 1943 The Lagniappe is Louisiana Tech ' s student year¬ book. The title, a characteristic expression of the State of Louisiana and meaning something extra, was adopted in 1905. Edited by a student selected by the college publications committee, the annual has been without financial aid from advertisements since 1934. The 1943 Lagniappe was prepared during a time of trial and grave uncertainty, when draft conditions threatened on numerous occasions to disrupt the en¬ tire staff. But through the guidance of Kenneth F. Hewins, director of publications, and with the aid of a hard working staff, this edition has been made possible. In an effort to get out of the rut so to speak, the editor has given the student body a new kind of ar¬ rangement and organization in this production. That it may meet with your approval is his sincerest hope. CloM A _ _ _ _ and ciEncE± The School of Arts and Sciences is one of the oldest divisions of the college. The purpose of the School may be stated as follows: (1) To provide a broad, general education for those who desire this rather than a more specialized technical education; (2) to give the basic courses common to the other schools of the college, such as English, mathematics, languages, natural sciences, etc.; (3) to provide pre-professional train¬ ing for those students who intend to study law, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, etc.; (4) to assist in the pre¬ paration of prospective teachers who desire to major in and teach such subjects as English, foreign lan¬ guages, mathematics, natural science, social science, music, etc.; and (5) to provide professional training for such students as music students, particularly those who intend to teach. In general, the student in the School of Arts and Sciences is required to acquaint himself with the main fields of intellectual interest and in addition to acquire, through his major study, a thorough knowledge of some special field. Thus, he may obtain a liberal education, which will prove invaluable to him as preparation for a business or professional career as well as for richer and better living. The subjects taught in the School of Arts and Sciences are art, biology, chemistry, English, French, history, journalism, mathematics, music, physical education, physics, political science, sociology, Spanish and speech. The de¬ gree granted upon the completion of the required course of study is one of the following: Bachelor of Sci¬ ence in Chemical Engineering, Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. The Engineering School is located in Bogard Hall, the new engineering building. In this building are the classrooms, library, and laboratories for chemical, civil, electrical and mechanical engineering, and the de¬ partments of Physics and Mathematics. The laboratories are adequately equipped so that proper instruction and training may be given to students in the operation and care of the equipment used in the field of study which they have chosen. The School of Engineering is aware of its responsibility of training men for public service, therefore it must hold exacting standards for those students to whom i t gives its approval. Since the sciences, especially physics, chemistry, and mathematics, are the basis of any sound engineering curriculum, satisfactory work is essential in these departments during the first two years. As an institution for vocational training, Louisiana Polytechnic Institute has the responsibility of doing its part toward a solution of the nation ' s business and economic problems. Thus the School of Business Ad¬ ministration and Economics has four major objectives: (1) to provide a high quality of business training for students seeking a business career; (2) to prepare young men and women for employment in business, in office work, and in secretarial positions in the civil service; (3) to prepare teachers for teaching commercial subjects in high schools; and (4) to promote and stimulate student interest in the national economic life in order to contribute intelligently to a solution of the economic ills. The School of Business Administration and Economics offers four basic curricula. The General Business curricula, the Accounting curricula, and the Secretarial Science curricula lead to the Bachelor of Science de¬ gree; and the Economics curriculum leads to the Bachelor of arts degree. A business-machine room has recently been installed offering training in the use of adding, billing, and post¬ ing machines, calculating machines, and other machines that are found in typical business experience. All students follow the same course of study through the freshmen year. At the beginning of the sophomore year, the student must select the curriculum in which he is most interested. A transfer, however, may be made from one curriculum to another at the beginning of the junior year without loss of credit. Amos W. Ford Dean . . . Wroten .Haynesville Sic S oms cEcononiici The Department of Domestic Science as organized in our college in 1896 was an untried field in Louisiana education. It was a one-teacher subject with a necessarily restricted course of study. In 1902, two assistant teachers were added and with an increasing number of sudents and teachers in the following years, a wider scope of instruction in home living was achieved. The present School of Home Economics, having five departments and nine teachers, serves a still wider purpose. Within the last five years two additional fields of service have been developed; the fields of Child Develop¬ ment and Nursery School Supervision, and that of Hospital Dietetics. Four curricula are open to Home Economics majors: the course for home makers, for home economics teach¬ ers, for dietitians (institutional management) and for clothing arts majors. The first three receive the B.S. Degree and the last the B.A. In the work of all these departments there is a persistent effort to advance the idea of the dignity and no¬ bility of cooperative home living as it meets the growing demands of members of the family and community groups, and of seeing beyond the families ' needs to the great world industries back of the production of the commodities used in the home, thus developing broader interests and sympathies and definite responsi¬ bilities as intelligent and ethical consumers and citizens. Serving in one or another of the various fields for which our graduates are trained, they may be found in many states and several foreign countries. Helen Graham Dean . . . Arcadia 5 School of Home Economics Dining Hall The Louisiana Polytechnic Institute is one of the colleges approved by the State Board of Education for the professional preparation of teachers. Through its school of education Tech offers its fullest co-operation to the State Board of Education in giving the schools of the state professionally trained teachers. The School of Education is organized into four curricula leading to the Baccalaureate Degree in education. Each curriculum is designed to prepare for a specific type of teaching service. Therefore the new students enrolling in the School of Education should consult the Dean for advice in choice of a curriculum. Students who complete a four-year curriculum are granted the bachelor ' s degree and are entitled to teach in any approved high school in the state; and to teach in any of the accredited schools belonging to the As¬ sociation of Colleges and Secondary Schools of the Southern States. For the students who are preparing to teach in the elementary grades there is conducted on the campus a well-equipped and officered elementary school. The work of this school conforms with the course of study of the elementary schools as prescribed by the State Department of Education of Louisiana. For sudents who are preparing to teach in the high school, arrangements are made for practice teaching in the Ruston city high school. Gustaf Freden Dean . . . Jonesboro Agriculture has been taught at Louisiana Polytechnic Institute since its founding in 1884, with the excep¬ tion of the years between 1923 and 1929. Excellent facilities for its teaching have been provided during the past five years. The college now has available for its use about three hundred and fifty acres of land, part of which lies within the city limits of Ruston and near the college campus. Modern buildings and other equipment for carrying on general farming and livestock and dairy farming in Northern Louisiana are in use. A herd of about one hundred pure-bred Jersey and Holstein cattle is maintained to furnish laboratory ma¬ terial for teaching and to provide dairy products for use on the campus. Likewise, herds of swine and beef cattle are kept. The United States Soil Conservation Service maintains practical demonstrations in all of its phases of soil and water control, land use, and reforestation on the college farm. The development of orch¬ ards and gardens is now under way by the Horticulture department. A modern one-story dormitory for boys has been erected on the college farm. A new two-story brick and concrete building for exclusive use in teaching agriculture is now in use on the college farm. Excellent laboratories have been supplied for teaching agronomy, horticulture, dairying, and animal husbandry. The dairy laboratory and creamery have modern equipment for pasteurizing, cooling and bottling milk, and production of butter, ice cream, and other dairy products. The work required in pro¬ ducing these, and carried out chiefly by students, affords excellent laboratory practice along with the teach¬ ing of these subjects. Facilities for farm butchering and curing meats on a small scale are provided. Raymond L. Reese Dean . . . School of Agriculture School of Agriculture Seni ors Curtis Anderson DOWNSVILLE YM.C.A. Olla School of Agriculture View of Campus From Atop Keeny Hall lecb Goaxdtuuj, StaU In this, the third year of Head Coach Joe Aillet ' s reign at Tech, the Bulldogs got off to a high-flying start. Using freshmen in varsity contests for the first time in years, they tore through four opponents, scoring 137 points while yielding nary a marker. This feat earned for them the second-rank¬ ing spot among undefeated teams of the nation at mid-season. Then came disaster. A broiling hot sun got a full view of the Techmen going down to their first defeat—before the Louisiana Normal Demons in the annual State Fair tussle at Shreveport. On the following weekend, the dishearten, ed Techmen lost another close one, this time to Southwestern. The Canines took their next test—their last conference-trial— from Southeastern by a wide margin, but were soundly beaten the following Satur¬ day by the hard-riding Hardin-Simmons Cowboys, one of the nation ' s few unde¬ feated teams. The Memphis State Teach¬ ers proved an easy mark in the closing game of the season, which was played in Memphis. Coach Aillet had only Perritt and Peace as experienced backfield men, and had to work hard to inoculate his light, fleet- footed crew with the fundamentals of his modified Notre Dame system. Coaches Crowley and Wells did a fine job with the linemen, a fact attested to by the low scoring total of Tech ' s opponents and the five Bulldog stalwarts in the LIC all-star forward wall. Coach Wells finished the year as director of intramural athletics. Coach Crowley left in February to be a lieutenant (j.g.) in the Naval Air Corps physical training division. Coach Hogg, who has been handling the Canine baseball squads so ably in the past, found his chances for a team killed— like those of Coach Crowley for a basket¬ ball squad—by the discontinuance of in¬ tercollegiate athletics. He was kept busy, though, directing the extensive new physi¬ cal training program for men. The Tech Bulldogs First Row: E. After a listless first quarter which saw the teams sparring in the center of the field, the Tech offensive power opened up. After pushing the Muckers all over the field in the second quarter, the Techmen shoved across three tallies after the half-time recess to sew up the contest. Eddie Harelson scored on a line buck from deep in the Miners ' territory, where the ball had been placed by the long runs of Peace and Harelson. Both of the other touchdowns were made on passes, with Peace and Didier handling the tossing. The Texans threatened several times with tricky reverses and long passes, but each time the Bull¬ dog defense was equal to the occasion and held the foe from paydirt. In all, the Canines exhibited a rock-ribbed line and an offense that clicked quite well after looking a bit shabby in the first quarter. The Tech eleven played its second game away from home, meeting the Waco (Texas) Army Flying School team on the Fairgrounds stadium in Shreve¬ port. The Fliers proved no match for the doughty Techmen, though, and were overpowered, 45 to 0. Captain Perritt passed to Newman for the first Tech score soon after the game started. In the second quarter, D. E. Albritton went over from the Waco two. In the third period, the Canines capitalized on two Army fumbles within the 10-yard stripe. Harel¬ son crossed into paydirt on a four-yard plunge for the third tally, while Newman snagged a Perritt pass for the fourth. Talmadge Foreman, freshman from Bastrop, scored twice in the last quarter, on runs of 25 and 11 yards. Hollis Jones ran the count up to 45 with a 23-yard off-tackle smash. The Waco men never crossed the Tech 40-yard stripe, and only through heroic line play of their own were they able to hold the score down. V ! „ T , J ' m ' - ' x c •; , Cerise ' s block helps Peace around end against Southeastern. ; -v - El ■P The most thrilling game of the home season was Tech ' s 26 to 0 conquest of the Marshall College Big Green. After a first quarter played in the middle of the field, Marshall took over, and it appeared that their speed and trickery might be too much for the Techsters. The West Virginians made their deepest penetration into Tech territory in the second quarter, when Johnny Perritt caught a Marshall pass-receiver from behind on the Bulldog 20. In the second half, though, Tech took over. The Canines penetrated deep into Green territory, and after t eing set back momentarily by a fumble, ploughed through to the first score of the game as Albritton waltzed over from the four yard line. John Perritt ran 80 yards from scrimmage to the Marshall goal, but stepped out of bounds on the 20. As the final quarter began, Harelson took it over from the one. Freshman Hollis Jones added the two remaining markers on last period jaunts of 23 and 17 yards. Tech ' s line play was brilliant in its own territory. Firsst downs favored the Bulldogs, 15 to 10. Sam Houston State ' s Bearkats from Huntsville, Texas, were the fourth team on the schedule, and the fourth to be cudgeled by the victory-drunk Canines. In the first period, Frosh Talmadge Foreman scampered 62 yards to the Bearkat 10, from w hich point he scored two plays later. A moment later, Frosh Center John Hay intercepted a Teacher aerial on the visitor ' s 20 and Hollis Jones took the oval across in one play. Lennie Olsen caught a Jones forward just before the end of the first half and stepped over from the 10 yard line. Gene Fleming and Ray Peace tallied in the third quarter. Fleming took an aerial from Hay, who had again intercepted a pass, and sped across standing up. Peace got his the hard way, returning a punt 70 yards into paydirt. In the final quarter, Peace and Foreman each added his six points ' worth on short plunges, and the scoring was over. tUT-r millTillilf L ' ' a.. | sS , 1 SiLjEEi ' MM Sam Houston penetrated to the Tech 5 in the second quarter, and pushed the Canines back again in the third period, but the Bulldogs refused to yield a touchdown. Three Tech markers, two by Eddie Harelson and one by Charley Newman, were called back on penalties. The first team to score on the Bulldogs was also the first one to defeat them—the Normal Demons. The Natchitoches boys scored late in the first quarter on a tricky spin play from the Tech 15-yard line. This seemed to take the zip out of the Techmen, and they couldn ' t find themselves all afternoon. The usual sterling quality of the punting was not there, and Normal kickers consistently kept the Bulldogs ' backs to the wall. Albritton grounded after bucking the Marshall line. Late in the second quarter, the Demons drove deep into Tech territory. Their attack bogged down, but their placement specialist, Davis, dropped back from his guard position and split the uprights with a field goal, giving Normal a 10 to 0 lead at the half. The Canine crew fought back valiantly in the last half, but the punch just wasn ' t there. Finally, late in the last quarter, Captain Johnny Perritt scored from the eight-yard line, where interference with a pass receiver had been called on the Demons. The game ended with Tech on the Normal 20, but with¬ out time to try for a score. Ball-hawks in the Fair game, but where ' s the ball? Tech dropped her second conference game in as many starts on the fol¬ lowing weekend, bowing before the Southwestern Bulldogs in Lafayette, 12-7. The first tally came when a Southwestern lineman nabbed Hollis Jones ' fumble and traipsed 75 yards before the Techmen caught on to what was happening. Then in the third period the downstaters put on a sustained drive of 50 yards of their second marker. Neither conversion was good. Meanwhile, Tech was raging up and down the field, but was unable to cross the final stripe until late in the third quarter. With Perritt lugging and tossing the leather, the Canines went to the Bulldog 20. From that point, Eddie Harelson scored in two tries. Didier converted to put the Techsters back in the game. In the final quarter, the Canine backs engineered a drive to the South¬ western seven yard line, but a 15-yard penalty annulled that scoring chance, and the game ended with the Lafayette team on top, 12-7. Tech held a large margin in yardage and first downs, but couldn ' t scratch the end zone again. Red Rife, Perritt, Bishop, and Eddie Harelson were outstanding even in defeat. Before a Homecoming crowd in Tech Stadium, the Bulldogs returned to their winning ways, crushing the Southeastern Lions, 56-14. Perritt gathered in an aerial from Peace before the game was three min¬ utes old, and scampered 45 yards for the first touchdown. A few min¬ utes later, Pearce Didier tossed one to Talmadge Foreman, who took it on the Southeastern five and strolled across. Then, toward the end of the first period, Foreman again took a toss on the Lion five, this time from Hollis Jones, and ran the score up to 18 points. In the second quarter, End Charley Newman blocked a Lion punt and Jones passed to Foreman and the latter scored his third t-d of the day. Perritt passed to Didier from the Southeastern 20 after a long Tech drive for the fifth Bulldog marker. Newman again blocked a punt, and Tackle Max Brown fell on the oval in the end zone to run the score to 37 to 0 at the half. Soon after the second half started, Raymond Peace ran 65 yards into pay dirt. Southeastern then made its first touchdown on a plunge from the two after a long pass. Hollis Jones retaliated with a six-point¬ er from the 16 yard line after Foreman ' s long run. Aided by a fumble and a penalty, the Lions ran their point total to 14 with another plunge from the Tech two. Ray Peace chalked up the final marker on a 10-yard end run. The unbeaten, untied, and Sun Bowl-bound Hardin- Simmons Cowboys proved too tough for the Bull¬ dogs, and they were handed their third loss, 47-13, in the bailiwick of the lariat-tossers at Abilene, Texas. Little Doc Mobley, who was the nation ' s leading groundgainer and a Little All-American, and a huge fullback, Camp Wilson, whipped up 21 points before the Bulldogs were able to score. In the second quarter, Tech struck through the air, as Ray Peace passed to Charley Newman, who ambled over. The second Canine score came in the final period near the end of the game when little Pearce Didier travel¬ ed around end from the Hardin-Simmons seven. Meanwhile the Cowboys were ringing up 26 more points to put the game on ice. The Texans scored twice on intercepted Tech aerials, but manufactured five touchdowns on their potent running game. Hollis Jones, Tech tailback, ran 75 yards for a touchdown but stepped out of bounds around the Cowboy 40 yard line. Cuccia, Reed, Martin, and Newman showed up best in the line, and Jones, Perritt, Peace and Gene Fleming looked best in the backfield. Leaving home again, the Techmen went this time to Memphis, Tenn., where they coasted to their sixth victory in the season ' s final game against Memphis State Teachers, 33 to 7. The Canines used their fine air attack to good advantage in this contest. Recovering a State fumble following the opening kickoff, the Techsters marched 60 yards to pay dirt as Raymond Peace carried the ball over on a sweep¬ ing reverse from the Tiger four. After forcing the Memphians to punt, the Bulldogs drove to mid- field, from whence Hollis Jones dropped back and fired a shot to Newman in the State end zone. Just before the end of the first half, Jones passed to Newman again, this time on a 45-yard scoring play. Pup shoe-race winner slides in Albritton converted. In the third quarter, Gene Fleming scooted around the Tiger right end for six more points and Jones ' placement was good. The final Tech marker came in the last quarter, when Didier passed 34 yards to End Aubary Thomas in the Memphis State end zone. Albritton again con¬ verted. The lone Tiger tally came late in the fourth period on a 24-yard pass into the end zone. Perritt and Bishop closed their collegiate careers in fine fashion, and sharing the spotlight with them were Gene Fleming, Albritton, Newman, and Jones. Left to right: Lynch, Allison, Hay, Jones, Durrett, Davey. Shufflin, Greene, Hogg, Alexander, McBeth, Reed, Jolly. Freshman Squad ALL Charles Newman, End (upper left) .... Good enough as a freshman last year to play with the Varsity in all its games, Charley improved his style of play further and was an easy choice for the All-Conference left end berth. Hoss caught quite a number of passes, long and short, for good gains and several touchdowns. Also he was a hard-smashing defensive player and proved exceedingly difficult to get around for the opposing runners. Jim Allen, Center (upper mid¬ dle) . . . Two hundred twenty pound Jim anchored the middle of the Bulldog line, and how he anchored it! Though he was a fine snapperback and a good blocker, the big boy shone especially in backing up the line. Many visiting halfbacks got up wondering how that tank happened to run over them after one of Big Jim ' s fierce tackles. Allen is a junior and gained his second block T this fall. Robert Rife, End (upper right) ... A junior, who played little during the ' 42 season, Red learned fast this year and, though beginning the first game on the bench, soon gained a first-string position. Once in possession of a starting job, Rife didn ' t waste any time showing spectators, coaches and opposing players how de¬ fensive right end should be played. Red plugged his gap admirably and was best at getting down the field under punts. Frank Bishop, Guard (middle) . . . This All-LIC honor came as a fitting climax to Frank ' s out¬ standing career as a Tech foot¬ baller and as alternate captain of this year ' s squad. Handling his bulk with a great deal of speed, Bishop was a convincing blocker and almost impassable on defense. During his three- year Varsity term, blocking by Bishop has cleared hole after hole for Bulldog leather-toters. George Doherty, Tackle (bot¬ tom) . . . Giving Tech its fifth of the seven all-star line posi¬ tions, George Doherty was awarded one of the tackle berths. A senior this year, George has one year of eligi¬ bility left. Doherty played driv¬ ing, heads-up football all season and was hard to move on de¬ fense. He was a great team player and a steadying influ¬ ence on his mates when the going got rough. First row : Albritton, Kennedy, Boyter, Ramsey, Crowe, Cobb, Didier, Hicks, Matthews, Jones. Second row: Henderson, LaHood, Taylor, Clinton, Booth, Newman, Kilgore, Napper, Carey, Coach Crowley. With Booth, Clinton, Cobb and Crowe returning from last year ' s champion¬ ship quintet, and with several promising sophomores and freshmen on hand, Coach Cecil Crowley ' s Tech basketball squad had quite a rosy outlook for the ' 43 season. However, before the boys began their season, the order came through for the abandonment of all intercollegiate athletics for the duration. Billy Cobb, a senior who had been selected to serve as captain for this year, left soon for the Army. Coach Crowley followed suit, and when he left for the Navy, all basketball work¬ outs were suspended. Most of the boys finished the season with intramural or campus independent teams.
