A MESSAGE FROM gyypf x — PRESIDENT I greatly appreciate being permitted to include a word of greeting in your yearbook. The value of this book will in¬ crease to you as the years pass. You will show it to your children and every time you open it in the years to come it will be a pleasant reminder of the happy days all of you spent together at Tech. I am grateful for this privilege I have had of associating with you and being a part of your busy life during the Session 1941-1942. To those of you who will remain with us I ex¬ press the hope that the year 1942-1943 may be even more pleasant and profitable. For those of you who go out from us into a troubled world I give my best wishes for success, happiness and usefulness. Remember you are representa¬ t ives not only of your own family but of Alma Mater. Tech expects every Tech man and woman to do his duty. Sincerely, Claybrook Cottingham. President. LIC Champs With Head Coach Joe Aillet serving his second year as gridiron chief, Louisiana Tech ' s Bulldogs carried home their first Louisiana Intercollegiate conference football championship at the close of the 1941 pigskin campaign. The Canine machine got off to a the other. But, a convincing victory over their traditional rivals, the Louisiana Normal Demons, in the annual state fair classic launched the Bulldogs on a successful campaign which saw them breeze through the remaind¬ er of their conference games without a threat of defeat. Only 14 points were scored against the Techsters in loop contests. Aillet, assisted by Cecil Crowley, again employed the T formation in the Bull¬ dogs ' line of attack. All of the defeats handed the Techmen were dealt by ma¬ jor gridiron powers such as Auburn, Louisiana State, Hardin-Simmons, and Mis¬ sissippi Southern. bad start in the first four contests, losing three of these encounters and tying Joe Aillet Garland Gregory, Little All-American Climaxing a brilliant gridiron career, Garland Gregory, captain and guard of the Bulldog squad, was given a first- string position on the Associated Press ' Little All-America football team upon completion of the grid season. Gregory was the first player in Tech football history to receive such an award. Outstanding defensive and offensive playing along with spirited team leadership won the Techster the coveted all- star position. U., 25 Even while losing to the pow¬ erful Bengal Tigers of Louisiana State, the Bulldogs looked good enough to cause a steep soar of spirits among Tech followers. The Tigers acquired most of their gains with aerial bom¬ bardments. On the ground, the Techmen held the powerful Southeastern conference eleven to a standstill. At the end of the third quarter, LSU led, 13 to 0. But, the vast reserve power of the Tigers smashed over for two touch¬ downs in the final stanza against a tired Tech eleven. On a rain-drenched field in El Paso, the Bulldogs and the Muckers of the Texas College of Mines played to a scoreless tie in the Canines ' second game of the season. Although held scoreless, the Techmen completely outplayed the Miners throughout the con¬ test. Poor officiating and a muddy field prevented the Techsters from pushing over a counter. So obvious were the officials ' mistakes, Texas fans formed a Tech cheering section as a comforting gesture to the dis¬ heartened Bulldog gridders. Louisiana Tech, 7; Mississippi Southern, 19 Against the flashy Mississippi Southern grid crew, the Techmen had their off game of the season. The Canines failed to perform up to par both on offense and defense. Johnny Perritt, Canine halfback, streaked off tackle for 24 yards for the lone Tech touch¬ down. Again, strong reserve power overcame the game but tired Techmen. At the end of the third period th e powerful Plainsmen had scored only two touchdowns against their smaller op¬ ponents. But, a last-quarter scoring spree netted the Au¬ burn squad three more trips into counting ter¬ ritory and the Techmen returned home a de¬ feated but wiser football aggregation. For, the lessons learned in competition with major grid powers proved helpful to the Canines later in the season among loop foes. The Bulldog cheerleaders are , from left to right: Roy Russell Juanita Bryce , Rufus (Bo) Russell and Patsy (Bootsy) Stokes. Eugene Fleming starts goalward after intercepting a Normal aerial. Louisiana Tech, 10; Louisiana Normal, 0 After outplaying the Normalites in the first half, the Canines applied more heat in the third stanza but were still unable to score a touchdown. Consequently, Edd Roberts, all-conference tackle, was sent back to boot a field goal from the Demon 28- yard line. With the Techsters in the lead, 3 to 0, the Demon quarterback called for a fourth-down pass in the final seconds of play. The pass failed and Freddie Michael, Johnny Perritt and Bob May sparked a 30-yard drive which netted the Canines their touch¬ down. Michael plunged over from the eight-yard stripe, then booted the extra point to give the Bulldogs their first win over the Demons in four years. Louisiana Tech, 21; Southeastern, 14 When the Tech gridmen went to Hammond for a match with the Southeastern Lions, they were eagerly eyeing a conference cham¬ pionship. The Lions gave the Bulldogs a momentary scare by threatening to tie the game. In the fourth period, the score was deadlocked, 14 to 14, when Jim Tinsley and Michael sparked a touchdown drive which gave the Canines their margin of victory. Garland Gregory and Richard (Red) Rivers accounted for the Techmen ' s other two touchdowns in the first seven minutes of play. Rivers circled end for 16 yards to score the first one and a few minutes later, Gregory intercepted a pass and trotted 43 yards for the score. Louisiana Tech, 12; Southwestern, 0 With the two teams tied for first place in the conference title chase, Tech and Southwestern clashed in Ruston to settle the conference leadership. Bob May scored the first Tech touchdown in the second period on a quarterback sneak after Tinsley and Rivers had worked the ball to the one-yard marker. In the third stanza, Tinsley flipped Tag Yarbrough a pass from the SLI 28 to the 10 and the shifty Canine end romped the remaining distance for the score. Louisiana Tech, 45; Louisiana College, 0 The conference crown was practically cinched for the Techmen when they spoiled Louisiana college ' s homecoming by staging a track meet on the Wildcat gridiron. Every player available was used against the Pinevillians in piling up the winning 45 points. It was the most decisive victory ever scored by either team in years of gridiron relations. Louisiana Tech, 0; Hardin-Simmons, 13 Bringing with them an impressive record in the tough Border con¬ ference, Hardin-Simmons Cowboys invaded the Bulldogs ' play¬ ground to help the Techmen entertain a large crowd of homecom¬ ing fans. After a gruelling battle, the aerial-minded Cowpunchers came out ahead of the Techsters, 13 to 0, as a result of two touchdown passes. Louisiana Tech, 39; Centenary, 0 In the season finale, the Canines battered their traditional rivals, the Centenary Gentlemen, to a pulp in a Turkey Day classic. Highlights of the game were an 82-yard touchdown jaunt by Michael following a pass interception and a 54-yard run through the center of the line by Tinsley. Under the tutorship of Coach Mike Wells and his assistant, Paul Bonin, the Louisi¬ ana Tech Bullpups gave performances during the season which increased local fans ' hopes of even a better varsity squad next season. The tackle position, a highly important spot in the system em¬ ployed by the Tech grid machine, was handled expertly by Roberts during the entire season. When the Canine offense bogged, Big Edd ' s accurate toe was a dangerous scoring threat from any angle. His well-aimed field goal against Louisiana Normal marked the turning point which gave the Techmen their first victory over the Demons in four years. Garland Gregory, Guard Bob May, Quarterback Capt. Garland Gregory ' s selection as all-conference guard was equivalent to hitting the jackpot for the handsome Techster. The choice marked Gregory ' s second year on the loop all-star aggregation. A unanimous pick for the mythical squad, the Bulldog guard was named honorary captain of the eleven. Outstanding defensive and offensive line play along with an amazing knack for pass defense accounted for Gregory ' s selec¬ tion on both the all-conference squad and the Associated Press ' Little All-America. Edd Roberts, Tackle Hl-GotUetiestce, 1941 Bob May ' s brilliant field generalship was undoubtedly a leading factor in the Bulldogs ' drive to their first conference crown. May, a senior, directed the Canine attack with persistent accuracy. Besides turning in a fine job of signal calling, the husky Tech quarterback stood out as a blocking back, an excellent line-backer and a constant scoring threat at close range on d riving quarter¬ back sneaks. After assisting Coach Joe Aillet in tutoring Tech ' s first conference football champions, Coach Cecil Crowley assumed full charge of the Bulldog basketball team. A few weeks later, his forces returned home with Tech ' s first conference cage title. Coach Cecil Crowley The youthful hoop mentor was serving his second season on the Bulldog campus when the conference title was won. With the Louisiana crown already won, Coach Crowley brought his quintet into stiffer competition at the annual SIAA tournament at Bowling Green, Ky. A victory over Union college and a bye placed the Techmen in the semi-finals where they lost to the Delta State Teachers. After the SIAA meet, the Bulldog hoopsters attended the National tournament at Kansas City. In their first contest, the Techsters bowed to the powerful Texas Tech quintet.
