Lowery Hundred Fifty-Five THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR After playing football for St. Edward’s university, Aillet began his coaching Joe Aillet career and it was to his credit that the great Normal team of two years ago rolled to its success. Employing the Notre Dame system at Tech, he proceeded to produce a Bulldog team which fought its way to glory by defeating some of the powerhouse elevens of the nation. and HEAD COACH Coming to Louisiana Tech aL the close of the 1939 foot¬ ball season to become Ath¬ letic Director and head coach of the pigskin eleven, Joe Aillet immediately won his way into the hearts of the student body. Under his able guidance, athletics at Tech have increased their domain and aroused interest which was heretofore lack¬ ing. HIS FOOTBALL STAFF Along with the new Athletic Director came Cecil Crowley as assistant football and head basketball coach. A former Centenary College star and coach at the Male high school of Louisville, Ky., Crowley directed the Tech basketeers to the second place spot in the L. I. C. Hundred Fifty-Seven mmm Freddie Michael, Fullback Witt Vascocou, Tackle Paul Bonin, Guard Travis Hammons, Center Hundred Fifty-Eight THE 1940 FOOTBALL SEASON Journeying to Baton Rouge to take on the powerful Louisiana State Tigers in the opening game of the season, the Bulldogs gave the Bayou Bengals quite a scare when they led 7-6 at the end of the first quarter. After Bernie Moore’s machine scored early in the first period, Tech came back to take the lead, when James Tinsley, playing like an All-American, tossed an aerial into the waiting arms of Garner in the L.S.U. end zone and Freddie Michael kicked the extra point. The entire Canine team fought vali¬ antly every minute of the game but the weight and reserve strength of the Tigers was too much for their smaller foes and the game ended with the score reading 39-7. The following week the Bulldogs ran into unexpected trouble when they met the Ouachita College Tigers on neutral ground at El Dorado. Scoring in almost every imaginable way, the boys from the Razorback State downed a surprised Tech team 17-0. The College, outweighing the Canines to an even greater degree than did L.S.U., stopped every thrust of the Techsters which might have been turned into scores. Fleet-footed Johnny Perritt races to pay-dirt for a Canine score in the battle with the Miners. BULLDOGS BLAST MINERS Returning to Ruston for the first home engagement of the season, the Bull¬ dogs hit the comeback trail in great fashion at the expense of an unbeaten Texas College of Mines’ eleven. After Gregory recovered a Mucker fumble on the opening kickoff, Barker and Zoeller combined their plunging abilites to carry the pigskin to the ten yard marker. From this point Perritt c arried the hall over on an end sweep for the first tally. Shortly before the first quarter ended, Wojecki raced 41 yards around left end for a second score. Only once were the Miners able to cross the Tech goal line. Their lone counter came in the third period after a sustained drive of 40 yards. Tech’s final marker came in the fourth canto with Perritt slipping through the center of the line for 21 yards and a touchdown. The final score was Tech 19, Texas Mines 7. The unbeaten Teachers showed the Techmen some of the hardest football ever to be played on the Canine gridiron. After Tag” Yarborough took in a pass across the goal line for Tech, Michael brought victory to his team with a perfect place kick. Hitting the road again, the Techmen dropped a heart breaker to the Normal Demons in the annual grid classic at the State Fair, 13-0. Playing like champions throughout the first half, the Bulldogs lost several scoring op¬ portunities with costly fumbles. Quarterback Walter Ford starts out on a long gain in the Texas Mines game. TECHSTERS TRIP TITANS Returning to Tech stadium for an engagement with the Titans of Illinois Wesleyan, the Bulldogs proceeded to ruin that team’s perfect record and cop its third straight home game 20-14. After Wesleyan had recovered a Canine fumble to score early in the first period, Perritt started Tech on its first scoring march when he returned an Illinois punt from his own 40 to the Titan 16. Pounding down to the five, Michael carried the oval into pay-dirt for six points. Illinois combined a Tech fumble with a penalty in the third quarter to help them score and go farther out in front, 14-6. Michael and Perritt combined their talents to score twice in the last half to take the game. Invading Lafayette to seek revenge for last season’s homecoming de¬ feat, the Bulldogs met the Southwestern Louisiana Institute gridders and were handed a 7-6 defeat by the downstaters. Southwestern scored in a very few plays after the kickoff when Neil ran 80 yards to pay-dirt. The Canines came back strong and matched this when Perritt slashed through right tackle and raced 40 yards to score but the try for extra point was no good and the game ended with¬ out further scoring. As in all pre¬ vious games, Michael’s punting was spectacular. Outkicking the Cats’ punter, Mike was mainly responsible for setting up scoring opportunities for the Canines. The whole team worked as a unit with Bishop and Nash doing outstanding work in the line. Out of South Louisiana came the Southeastern Lions for Tech’s last home game of the season. Picking up yardage almost at will, the Canines had a field day in trimming their opponents 26-6. Practically every man on the Bulldog roster saw service with Perritt, Michael, Parks, Garner, and Phillips playing stellar roles. Western Kentucky Teachers gang upon Perritt to drop him after a short gain. Hundred Sixty-Two BLANK GENTLEMEN IN FINAL OF SEASON To highlight a successful season, the Techmen wound up the campaign by outplaying the Gentlemen of Centenary College 6-0 in a very close battle. With both teams playing on prac¬ tically even terms, the game was finally decided in the third quarter when Bob May, Tech’s fine blocking back, intercepted a Gent pass and raced 75 yards for the game’s only score. Per- ritt broke loose for a 42-yard run to add to the thrills of the day. Yarborough and Vascocou were outstanding in the line while the whole hackfield played a brilliant game. Chester Wojecki, Halfback James Laughlin, End Howard Barker, Halfback Hundred Sixty-Three r THE FRESHMEN GRIDDERS Beginning his seventh year as head coach of Freshmen athletics, George (Blue) Hogg produced one of the finest football squads ever to don Bulldog uniforms. Winning three of four encounters, the Bullpups were rated as one of the best freshmen teams in the state. The junior Bulldogs drove to three decisive victories over Neville high school, the Normal Imps and Centenary Gentlemen by scores of 20-0, 33-0, and 35-0 respectively. In losing their only game of the season to Magnolia A. M., Coach George (Blue) Hogg the Techsters lost a golden opportunity to win that battle as one of their touchdowns was called back because of a penalty. After the pigskin parade had faded into the background, Coach Hogg turned his attention to Frosh basketball and a little later to the baseball diamond. CAGERS ON THE HARDWOOD The Louisiana Tech Cagers of 1940-41 played 17 games, winning seven and losing ten. Meeting two non-conference foes, the Techsters dropped three battles, two to Loyola of the South and one to Milsaps College. In Louisiana Intercollegiate Conference competition the Bulldogs gained an even split in their 14-game schedule to land in a tie for second place with the Gentlemen of Centenary College. Most persistent victims of the Tech hoopsters were the Louisiana College Wildcats who dropped a four-game set to the Canines. More grudging were the Centenary Gentlemen who held the Bulldog quintet to an even break in a four-game series. The other season’s victory came over Southeastern, who later avenged this defeat by trouncing the Red and Blue on the Lions’ only invasion of the local campus. The Normal Demons and South¬ western BulMogs stopped the Canines in four encounters, winning two games apiece. FRESHMEN BASKETEERS In reviewing the season of the Tech Freshmen bas- ketteers, the records show the first year men won five of their 11 games played and scored 363 points to 368 for their opponents. Joseph ‘’Buddy ’ Parker, 6 foot-5- inch center for the Pups, led the team scoring with 112 points while “Bearcat” Booth came second with 83 counters. Third man in scoring was Joe Tom Mabry who garnered 42 markers in the 11-game season. The Bullpup’s worst defeat came at the hands of the Morris-Dickson Druggists, southern A. A. U. champs of last year. In a two-game series with the Pups, the Druggists took both tilts by scores of 43-24 and 47-29. Louisiana Normal’s Imps also swept their two-game series with the junior Canines, winning once here, 29-25, and once at Natchitoches 40-22. A four-game set with the Freshmen of Centenary saw each team win two games. The Gent wins were by the scores of 38-32 and 34-28 while the Tech victories were by 35-31 and 33-29 counts. The Flyers of Barksdale field in Shreveport were victims of the Pups in a two- game series, the Techmen winning both games, 29-26 in Shreveport and 49-34 at home. Hundred Seventy-Two SEASON ' S PREVUE With a brilliant pitching staff backed by a great defensive infield and out¬ field, few could feel that the 1941 baseball campaign would be any¬ thing but successful for the Bulldogs. Taking over the catching duties for the Bulldogs in their first season on the squad, “Big Jim” Garner and Edd Roberts held down that position in great fashion. Ora “Ding” Mer¬ riot took over his old stand at first base. Bobby Young at second and “Teedie” Bonvillion at shortstop gave new blood to the team. In switching James “Weedie” Tinsley to the hot corner at third base after pitching for the Bulldogs last sea¬ son, Coach Hogg found a real defen¬ sive man. Roaming the outer gardens were such stars as Daniel Otts, Billy Hinton, Chester Wojecki, Tim Tyler, Walter Ford and James Matthews. On the mound for the Canines, Earl Baker, Frank Taylor, Leroy Hewette, Robert James Lancaster and Eugene Nunnally were to give the opponents no end of trouble with their twirling. Opening the season in Ruston against the University of Illinois, one of the finest teams in the Big Ten confer¬ ence, the Bulldogs, behind the superb three-hit pitching of Earl Baker, sophomore right-hander from Birm¬ ingham, Alabama, downed the Illini 5-2. In the last of a two-game series, the Northerners turned on three Tech hurlers to blast out a 15-4 triumph. Following the Illinois battles, the Hawkeyes of the University of Iowa came to town and proceeded to hand the Canines two setbacks in as many games, winning by scores of 8-2 and 8-5. Marking the opening of the Louisi¬ ana Intercollegiate Conference race for the locals, the Techsters routed the Normal Demons by scores of 8-0 and 9-1. Returning home for two more battles with Normal, the Bull¬ dogs again slugged their way to vic¬ tory by scores of 7-0 and 11-3. Returning to the sports world for the first time in a number of years, Coach E. M. Shirley became head director of the Bulldog track team, taking over the position recently vacated by Herb Dug- gins. In the first of three scheduled meets, the Canines journeyed to Clinton, Mis¬ sissippi, to take part in a triangular af¬ fair with Mississippi College and Mil- saps. Emerging on top with a total of 51 2 points, the Techsters gave warning that they were to be reckoned w ith in the remaining meets of the year. WOMEN’S ATHLETICS While Tech does not encourage interscholastic athletic competition for women, intramural sports and activities play a large part in the well-being of the girls. Opposing the title-holders was the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. As the sea¬ son progressed the Rookies found themselves perched atop the Intramural League, closely pursued by the Arcadia Gophers. Mike Wells, after his appointment to the helm of Intramural sports at Tech, won the popular approval of the entire student body by working out the best athletic program that this campus has seen in many a day. Every game possible was used for competition in the race for championship honors. Forming two groups, the Intramural and Fraternity Leagues, Coach Mike started things off by staging a tennis tournament and later football competition. He also brought the boxing game back to the fight fans when fistic battles were held about mid-season.
