It has afforded me an opportunity to observe you, first-hand, in the last lap of the final process of development before taking your places off the campus out in life on your own responsibilities. It is true that we have been handicapped by crowded conditions, but in the light of immediate future developments our prospect is bright. Ashley Wright Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds 2ZZ 1 The Student Council Owen Johnson President of the Student Body The Student Council, executive organ of the student body association and one of Tech ' s most recent acquisitions, set out at the beginning of the year to obtain a working knowledge of campus government and to show the students and faculty the advantages to be’ gained by student participation in college ad¬ ministration. With the avowed objectives of remedying such evils as might arise in the student body, promoting college spirit, fostering honorable conduct and ideals among students and promoting closer co-operation between the students and the faculty, the Student Council found a great task before it, a task not to be completed in one year. Pledged to a course of self-education, a policy of training student leaders for following years, the Council was limited in opportunities for concrete action. However, the laying of a firm foundation was necessary, and that was ac¬ complished. Although her Bulldog gridiron army fought valiantly, and on several occasions pushed the pig¬ skin within inches of victory, they were repeatedly repulsed by a pack of Southeastern Lions. The game ended in a scoreless tie. HOMECOMING DA The gueen and her maids watched the game from a vantage spot on the west sidelines. In the front row are, left to right, ' Miss Nell Hester and Miss Jacgueline Talbert and in the second row Miss Dorothy Lee Stodghill and Miss Nancy Abney Barnes. Regal Alice sits to the rear of her ladies-in-waiting. Led by the college band and white-clad Richard Brown, Tech ' s All - American baton- twirl er, Homecoming paraders strut briskly down Ruston thorough- lares prior to the loot- ball game. Turning right into Trenton street is the prize-winning float of the physical education department, which was adjudged as best en¬ tered in the Homecom¬ ing parade. Circling the color!ul Blue Jackets, pep squad composed of picked girls, the well-drilled Tech band marches into one of its fancy formations between halves of the game, preparatory to playing the Alma Mater. In pre-game ceremonies Queen Alice hands the foot¬ ball to be used in the contest to Captain Huey Wil¬ liamson. Eddie McLane, director of the Bulldogs, looks on. Now if that tackle had kept out that guard . . says ex-linesman Houston Beaumont to Fred Miller, former Tech athlete, as they leave the Homecoming dance long enough to rehash the afternoon ' s game with Coach Herb Duggins. Queen Marjorie Stevenson and her consort, King James Hill Cook. Mardi Gras Selected by popular vote of the student body, mellifluent Marjorie Stevenson of Shreveport, was chosen to reign over Tech ' s annual Mardi Gras celebration, which is modeled after the famed New Orleans festivities. As her regal companion she selected James Hill Cook of Grand Cane. Maids for the occasion, also chosen by popular ballot, included Virginia Frazier, Amy Sue Fur- low, Emogene Maroney and Cathryn Mullis. They picked for their knights Matt Redmond, Jimmy Briggs, Pete Levert and Carl Jordan, respectively. Below, dancers whirl gaily beneath a canopy of varied-colored crepe paper at the ball which high-lighted and ended the day ' s frolic. Tapers burn brightly in the background, and attendants and members of the court gaze anxiously while regally-rob¬ ed Marjorie and James kneel before, Priest John Bennett, as he performs the actual coronation ritual. The coat of arms of the house of Cook-Stevenson hangs high overhead. In the program following the coronation the newly-crowned King and Queen, surrounded by the court, sit upon their throne and listen as Jeanette Godwin sings at the command performance. On and Off A couple of Tech ' s would-be engineers work again survey¬ ing part of Louisiana ' s best and most often surveyed bit of terra firma. This campus life seems to b too much for some of us. • i ££ ' Devotees of the subtle art of campistry say there ' s nothing like it. Here we start at the steps of Leche Hall, meander out to one of the ever popular green benches, hop back to the post-office, and then wind up just where we started, on the steps of Leche hall. Striking out down the walk in such a determined manner must indicate an important destination, prob¬ ably a comfortable bench beneath a lovely tree, or the Student Center, sometimes known as the campus tonk. Some like it formal, while others prefer to get their rhythmic exercise in the informal atmosphere of the Center. Once in a while the local lassies get diked out in their Sunday best and do a little calling. You can always find somebody on their way to or from a class. Three Cornered Moon, the Tech Theatre Players ' first major production of the year, closes with Johnile Curry standing on the sofa gazing benignly on Anna Holstead and R. E. Cale, while Wanda Ann Mercer stares at John Wiley whose hair is being cut by Jess Harris and Haynes Harkey. Dramatics Shown below are the lovers in Outward Bound, John Wiley and Louise Allen (left). The examiner, Walter Berg, gives kindly advice to the London charwoman, Margaret Templeton, and her wayward son, John Earl Ferguson. Maurice Ursery as the steward attends to his duties at the bar. Another scene from Three Cornered Moon finds the Rimplegar family in an hilarious family con¬ ference as they send the dreamy novelist out to apply for a job. The examiner makes his dramatic entrance in Outward Bound, ' Sutton Vane s serious drama of life after death. Unusual effects were produced by the expressionistic set and colored lights. Day Engineers ' Marking the first time that undergraduate repre¬ sentatives of other colleges and universities were entertained as special guests, Louisiana Tech ' s engineering students celebrated their sixth annual Engineers ' day at the college on April 1. Evander Cale, senior from Mansfield, was elected king of the slide-rule totin ' students. He picked pretty Jacqueline Talbert of Keatchie as his queen. Knights named to attend Cale included Henry Lowe, William Andreola, W. E. Odom, Jr., and Quentin Hargrove. As their maids they selected Thelma Branch, Evelyn Benge, Amy Sue Furlow and Camille Hailey. During the day hundreds of students and visitors paraded through the engineering departments, viewing with interest the many exhibits prepared for the celebration. Right, King R. E. Published weekly by Louisiana Tech journal¬ ism students, The Tech Talk is the official publication of the college. The newspaper is printed by the Tech printing department, and has access to one of the most complete physical plants of any college in the South. Included in the college ' s equipment avail¬ able to The Tech Talk are a photography studio, a complete, up-to-date print shop and a modern photo-engraving plant. Johnile Curry, Society Editor. The title, a characteristic expression of the state of Louisiana and meaning something extra, was adopted inl905. Since 1934 the yearbook has been published without financial aid from ad¬ vertisements. The book is edited by a student se¬ lected by the college publications committee. (Eddie) McLane, who piloted the Louisiana Tech football ship through the stormy season of Nineteen Thirty Eight even though he was greatly handicapped by injuries re¬ ceived in an automobile accident the previous winter. The 1938 Football Season Not fully recovered from injuries received in an automobile accident and facing the toughest schedule of his Louisiana Tech coaching career, Coach L. P. (Eddie) McLane gathered the Red and Blue warriors together on a hot and dusty gridiron the first week in September, 1938. With only two weeks of practice behind them, the Bulldogs faced a determined Mississippi College eleven a team that was anxious to avenge defeats suffered in the past. Without sufficient drill hours chalked up to insure smooth functioning of their Notre Dame system, the Techmen turned in a ragged exhibition to lose to the Choctaws, 26-13. L. C. Sparks and Paul Bonin, sophomores, staged smashing performances in the line. The following week the Bulldogs began to show form. With their backfield men crashing through the line and skirting the ends, they routed the Millsaps Majors 19 to 7. Jubilant fans saw Merton Barnett score first on sheer power. Alton Westbrook went through the line to score, and Joe Eagar added a touchdown. Meeting the renowned Rebels of Ole Miss in their next contest, the Bulldogs gave that great eleven a bad scare when they led 7-6 at the half. A long pass from E. B. (Toad) Williams to Captain Huey Wil¬ liamson was good for the Tech score. Big Ben Whitman, Barnett and Williams played inspired ball in the backfield with John Sidney Hewitt, Pat Meeks and Williamson outstanding in the line. Hinkie, and the powerful Whitman labored in the backfield while Bonin and Joe Williams starred in the line. But with many of the other first-stringers on the injured list, the Bulldogs were crushingly defeated, 48-0. The Mississippi back- field was irresistable behind a forward wall as tough as iron. And the State Fair! Tech and Normal dished up a gridiron thriller that was fit for the most exacting foot¬ ball fan. In the first quarter the Bulldogs looked like champions. But only for one quarter did they completely i Sjfl .... m--: outclass Normal. The teams fought a bitter duel on al¬ most even terms for the next two periods. Then amid thrilling last minute passes and nerve-shattering drives, the Techmen gave way to lose, 7-6. The Bulldogs held on their goal line for seven downs in those crucial last few minutes. But a pass over the middle of the line tallied for Normal, and the fatal extra point was added to take the hard-fought game. Again the Bulldogs had vic¬ tory torn from their grasp in the last few minutes of the battle when they played Oklahoma City University. Wimer Girard and Bonin, af¬ ter beautiful performances in the line, were injured and taken from the game. Victor Blodgett and Jack Jaggers stopped enemy ball carriers b ehind their own line time and again. Hinkie slipped through the line for a touch¬ down, but the extra point was not added. Hinkie con¬ tinued to make gains con¬ sistently until he too was in¬ jured. In the last five min¬ utes the Goldbugs rallied and turned in a story-book finish to win, 7-6. The air attack of the Tech- men folded up the following week against the Southwest¬ ern squad. The S.L.I. Bulldog bombs found their way into the arms of the defensive backs, and Tech lost, 27-7. The defeat was not without its brighter side. Some bril¬ liant sophomore talent was uncovered. Howard Barker, Ora (Ding) Merriott and For¬ rest White, all in the back- field, served notice that they were out to give the vet¬ erans on the squad some stiff competition. The Bulldogs- held their own the first half against the raging Wildcats and in the third quarter turned on the steam to win, 7-0. A pass from Merriott to Captain Williamson scored the touchdown. Merriott, White, Barker and Barnett made up the winning back- field combination. In the line Ray Nitter, Joe Williams, Sumrall, Meeks and Boni n turned back the frantic Wild¬ cat mail carriers. Barker ran like a colt through broken fields, Whitman ploughed through the line on sheer power, and Barnett did some beautiful punting. E. B. (Toad) Williams exploded the enemy line, and Captain Williamson snagged a pass and went over standing up. The high point of the season came in the Centenary con¬ flict. A heavy Gentleman eleven was held to two touchdowns by sheer nerve, and Howard Barker ran 92 yards to score. After inter¬ cepting a Centenary pass he shook off tacklers to reach pay dirt. Thrilling aerial at¬ tempts and breathtaking runs brought the spectators to their feet time and again. Meeks, Williams and Wil¬ liamson starred in the line with Toad Williams, White, Barker and Merriott taking the honors in the backfield. The Gentlemen scored through the line. With the entire starting line¬ up composed of seniors, the final game of the season ended in a 0-0 tie when the Techmen met the Southeast¬ ern Lions of Hammond. As Barnett tore off neat gains in yardage the Bulldogs were stopped o nly six yards from the goal line at the half. In spite of outstanding play on the part of Toad Williams and Barker, the game ended in a deadlock. Head Freshman Football Coach George (Blue) Hogg Head Freshman Coach George (Blue) Hogg pulled a rugged, brilliant freshman team out of his 1938 football helmet and presented fans with an unbeaten squad of first-year men. The excellent showing made by the Bullpups promises a powerful Varsity for next year. The team played four games, winning three and tying one. They scored 65 points against their oppo¬ nents ' 32. Starting the season against the freshmen of Mississippi College, the little Techmen rallied in the Iasi t half to avenge a previous varsity defeat by a score of 23-12. In their second battle the ' Pups covered themselves with glory and proved their metal by conquering a giant team of Centenary Baby Gents 12-6. Next the Bullpups ' team rolled over the Millsaps ' Minors 23-7. The little Techmen closed a sensational freshman season with a thrilling 7-7 tie with the Normal Imps. Other Sports Boxing e Season Glovemen of Louisiana Tech inaugurated their boxing season early in January against the traditional enemy, Centenary, winning five out of eight bouts. With that victory a colorful, although not altogether successful, season was begun by Coach Eddie Wojecki ' s Bulldogs of the ring. The match arousing the most interest came in March when the team journeyed to Washington, D. C. to meet Columbus university ' s squad, conquered only once since 1931. The red and blue color bearers emerged honorably with a 4-4 tie. The final contest of the season was staged in Monroe against Centenary. With four matches chalked up each team had taken two. Bulldog glovemen painted a rosy picture of what the squad would be like in 1940 by decisively whipping their Gentlemen foes 5V2 to 2Vi. Tech leather-pushers showing exceptional ability were Robert F. (Soapy) Hand who was undefeated in the 127 pound class, Joe Wojecki, 120-pound division and Bruce Bartelmay, heavyweight. Other members of the squad were: Rip Pipes, 175; Merton G. Barnett, 165; Dwaine Martin, 165; John Mor- risey, 155; Guy Carroll, 155; Bill Wyly, 145; Jack Jones, 145 and Eddie Welch, 135. Harvey Cowser was student manager. Centenary ' s heavyweight retreats to a safe corner and grim¬ aces in pain as his seconds throw in a towel in token of sur¬ render to battering Bruce Bartelmay, Tech husky. C., for an engagement with Columbus university ' s highly-touted mittmen, the touring Techmen were taken on a sight-seeing jaunt through the Capitol city. Basketball Experienced Bulldog cagers were a formidable threat to S.I.A.A. members in 1939, but inconsistent play¬ ing made the Techmen less successful than they deserved to be. However, fans were proud of the .555 percentage of wins turned in by the Basketeers. The Techmen of the hardwood floor won 10 out of 18 games. The starting five were Charlie Carr, Ora (Ding) Merriott, L. T. (Hawk) Whitten, Ralph O ' Haver and Cap¬ tain Joe Williams. Carr and Merriott were high scorers for the season and held down forward berths. O ' Haver and Williams were at the guard positions with Whitten at center. The 1940 season should be bright indeed with all the starting players except Joe Williams returning and a very impressive array of freshman talent coming up. Only two seniors will leave the squad; W. A. Jones and Joe Williams. Coach Herb Duggins ' boys should be a power to be reckoned with in the 1940 S.I.A.A. race. Players besides the starting five who are expected to return for the 1940 basketball battles include Robert Phillips, Bill Andreola, James Montgomery, George Rooney and Gordon Adams. W. E. Adger served as student manager with Hinds (Tubby) Rogers acting as his assistant. Under the guidance of Coach Ray E. Davis an excellent hurling staff was assembled. Moundsmen included Law¬ rence Lefty Hinton, Clyde Stinnett, Robert Burt, Ray Miller and Andy Jones. Handicapped by the loss of seven veterans, four of whom comprised the 1938 infield, Coach Davis, nevertheless, de- Sumrali, Williams, Williamson, Gooch and Meeks Caston Willett Miller Coates Stinnett Hinton Burt Young tfiS A ' fee Coach Davis, Williams, Coates, Williamson, Gooch, Sumrall, Meeks, Phillips, Basco, Young, Hinton, Caston, Burt, Stinnett, Miller, Willett veloped a fine team worthy of defending the S.I.A.A. championship which was won by the Techmen last year. Selected from a wealth of material, Robert Burt at shortstop, Pat Meeks and Sam Gooch catching, Bob Young, Joe Williams and Huey Williamson in the infield, and Richard Basco, Charlie Caston, Richard Willett and Captain Jimmy Sumrall in the outfield made up a squad that func¬ tioned like a well-oiled machine. The team slipped easily into early season form to trounce Centenary 22-9 and 24-4 in the S.I.A.A. flag race. However, the Purdue nine swept out of the North to tie two and win one out of the three games. The University of Iowa squad followed to take two out of three contests. The Bulldogs left the home campus the second week in April to invade Ala¬ bama on their road trip. In three out of four starts the Techmen were victorious. The K-9 humbled Birmingham Southern 16-2 with Andy Jones on the mound. Lefty Hinton tossed the Bulldogs to victory against Jacksonville State Teach¬ ers to the tune of 10-2, and Stinnett, Miller, Coates and Jones combined to beat the Teachers 18-16 the following day in a sensational batting duel. Howard defeated the Bulldogs 10-3. Back home again, the Techmen journeyed to Shreveport to hang up another win over the Gentlemen. Going into the seventh the Bulldogs wer e behind 8-5, and it looked like Centenary might have some badly-needed revenge. But Joe Williams and Captain Sumrall began to swing their big bats, and the battle ended in favor of the Red and Blue, 16-8. Colleges to be met later in the season included Centenary, Springhill, Missis¬ sippi College, Southwestern and Millsaps. Smith, Director The Band The Louisiana Tech Band performs publicly on an average of twice a week throughout the school year. It plays for all chapel programs and presents a series of concerts during the spring and summer terms. During the football season the band played for all home games and for three out-of-town games. Special effort was made to present an entirely new marching routine at each successive appearance. Richard Brown, Drum Major The Lyre Club The Lyre Club is composed of band members of at least one semes¬ ter ' s standing. It was formed by those who wished additional op¬ portunity to take part in ensemble music. This group plays for special programs when the band as a whole is unable to do so. It is taking its place among the social organizations of the campus, sponsoring dances and such entertainment as the Centenary Kol- lege Kapers. OFFICERS President . . ....
