There has been created a different morale, a spirit of fel¬ lowship and cooperation, unification and friendliness. A strong esprit de corps has been developed which has infuenced Tech ' s rise to greater prominence. So to E. S. Richardson, under whose super¬ vision Louisiana Tech is going forward and to whose unselfish and unfailing service we owe a never-to-be-forgotten debt, we dedicate this volume of the Lagniappe. Fore wore. The depth and meaning of college life will be best ap¬ preciated in the years after college. With this in mind the Staff presents The Lagniappe for 1938 in the hope that the years spent at Louisiana Polytechnic Institute may be recalled in all their richness. k Contents The College The Classes Athletics Features Organizations In Memoriam Frank Boc -J aro Our beloved dean of the School of Engineering, a master teacher and one of the most human of all those who have risen to prominence by simply filling each day with service to his fellow man. His work with human ma¬ terial is known through the country to those that were fortunate enough to have known this man in his class room and also to those who needed men trained to accept the responsibility of work with more concrete materials. His pupils are the measure of his success and they have been placed in the most difficult of positions to do the most important work. They have not failed to show the training they have received at the hands of this master molder of human characteristics. Some did not know him because of his desire to place before his personal importance the work with which he interested himself. This cannot detract from the magnificance of his character building nor will it make the task of trying to fill the place of this master molder of human lives any easier. Dk CJLa. Her history is an open book, indelibly written in the hearts and minds of thousands who have gone through her doors. Her graduates are not of a spectacular type. They have gone out into life imbued with the idea of service. The Tech Alumnus has learned to live with himself and, also, how to live with others. When you meet any of the graduates out in life they speak enthusiastically of the institution, their Alma Mater. Louisiana Tech ' s extreme modesty, perhaps, has caused her to be placed in the category of President Roosevelt ' s Forgotten Man. Tech ' s Alumni, faculty, Student Body and her many friends now realize this fact and are de¬ manding a greater Louisiana Tech in order to meet the present increased needs. James Price Editor The Tech Taik consistently regarded as excellent in the annual All-American Newspaper Critical Service conducted by the Associated Collegiate Press, is published weekly by Journalism students of Louisiana Tech, with the counsel of Kenneth F. Hewins, director of publications. Progressive innovations toward better appear¬ ance in the matter of make-up and typography and the continuation of sound reporting by the staff have marked the year for the student newspaper. Of the editorial staff members, Ballard, Gresham, Walters and Miss Kroll served their first year. Price ended three years as editor at the close of the 1937-38 school session. Kenneth F. Davidson, Jr., Editor The Lagniappe is the yearbook of the students of Louisiana Polytechnic Institute. The title, Lagniappe , was adopted for the publication in 1905. In 1934 the custom of publication with no financial aid from advertisements was adopted. Publication continues this year following these customs. The book is edited by a student selected by the publications commit¬ tee of the college. Richardson, Jr Snapshots appe The Staccato from the drum section, crisp vibrancy from the woodwinds, brasses giving a flowing ac¬ companiment—the aim of every hopeful bands¬ man—came out of a year of intensive drill and long Here (above), is perfect unison recorded by a lens. Every bandsman has synchronized his step to the stirring Fight Song, as the unit moves up South Trenton street toward the mid-town area, thence to the Tech stadium, being paced by the remarkable shadow figures on the pavement in front of them. Brisk in the performance of his duties, W. E. Odom, Jr., has served capably this year as assistant director and business manager of the Tech band. practices. Spring concerts played by the unit were polished examples of what can be done with suf¬ ficient impetus. The band had the impetus and em¬ ployed it to become progressively better with each public performance of the year. Band James A. Smith, band director (shown at left), raised the baton on his third year at Tech this fall, dipped his leader ' s wand and swept the improved music unit into its third year of appreciable growth. Ernest Best, masseur of the deep-voiced instrument is temporarily off his beat as he poses with his drumstick poised for a downstroke. Director James A. Smith took a crew of 70-odd boys in the fall and knit them into a coherent musi¬ cal organization. The boys showed their versatility on the march or on the concert platform. They played for alumni gatherings, for conventions, for dedications and for the score of college affairs which demanded their presence. And their audiences called them back for more. Rosemary Breed, Ruston girl, smiled her warmest throughout a drear, rainy Homecoming as queen of the day for returning alumni! T club members, athletic lettermen, collaborated to pick her for the honor and were repaid with her pel sonable reigning in an otherwise disappointing time. Tech was shoved over awkward footing by a heavier Illinois Wes leyan Titan team and lost, 2-0. I Homecoming The royal party consisting of Miss Agnes Chambless, Miss Dorothy Lee Stodghill, Miss Rosemary Breed , Miss Nancy Barnes, and Miss Camille Hailey. Regal Rosemary lives up to the emblematic flower name that she bears, with smiling constancy in her mien as she proffers the foot¬ ball to Captain John Wyss, open¬ ly pleased at accepting the ob¬ ject, to which many a punting toe was pointed in the misty after¬ noon. One of those toes, that of left¬ footed Don Wiley, is being ap¬ plied to the ball here as his pro¬ tecting teammates lunge at big Titans who are set on blocking the kick. The Illinois men failed in their attempts and the sphere went loo ping down the field to move Tech out of a hole. Sigma Alpha Delta men, weath¬ er forecasters of the first water, sunk their float ideas into this marine craft. Delighted spectators laughed heartily at the appropri¬ ateness of the ship, shown here bowling merrily along on the sub¬ merged cinder track around the football field before it dropped anchor at game time. The Dance The King The Chain Ceremony. J. D. Hilburn, senior of Shreveport, was elected to reign over the engineers on their day of supremacy. He chose for his queen the charming Rose Merilyn Burris, sophomore of Shreveport, who stood with the king in per¬ forming his duties of the day. Knights picked for the day were: R. E. Cale, David Caldwell, Charles Edens and Wilbur Sanders. Cale chose Bonnie Garrett, Caldwell picked Margaret Bays, Edens and Sanders selected Louise Allen and Virginia Frazier as maids. David Caldwell R. E. Cale Charles Edens Reigns The Dance Floor. The flag of the nation and a flag designed especially for the Engineers was raised to inaugurate the annual Engineers ' day at La Tech. The activities continued through the day with the exhibits of scientific interest holding the center of attention. The day was brought to a close with the annual Engineers ' Dance, at which the senior class welded another link in the chain symbolizing the unity of Tech Engineers. Wilbur Sanders Louise Allen Margaret Bays Virginia Frazier Bonnie Garrett Marc 1 Patterned after the world- famed New Orleans festival, Mardi Gras at Louisiana Tech was celebrated with an elaborate historical pagent and a masked ball on Feb. 26th. For the first time, the selec¬ tion of a queen was put to popular vote of the students. Ruby Chandler, senior of Vi- dalia, was held in esteem by the voters. Miss Chandler leveled her scepter at Duke Hartsfield, a junior of Baton Rouge, who smiled with the que en from the dias on the Wigwam Stage. Gras The camera halted in mid-step the pirouetting of Eleanor Mitchell who offered her colorful dance for the approval of the royal court, seated at her right. Crinoline days were revived by the ladies and gentlemen in their period costumes. Full skirts and an ample swish of silks characterized the lavish dress of the court ladies. The court gallants wore dutiful copies of the male attire in France and Spain during the late eighteenth and early nine¬ teenth centuries. The pagent preceding the ball depicted the stages of ownership under which the Louisiana territory went. Flags of the former nations are held by the four girls behind the coronation alter. Former queens were honored at the festival. Goff, Ruston, 1932. The 1935 ruling lady, Hortense Callahan Prophit, was unable to attend. 1 Tech Tech is well known for its democracy in social affairs. Most notable of the gather¬ ings are staged on the dance floor. The Lagniappe presents here views of the danc¬ ers at three well-remembered proms. Above is flash shot of the Interfraternity Ball held last fall. In the foreground are couples shown swapping talk, dancing and in the process of being introduced. A fresh¬ man, back to camera, is awaiting his turn to cut in. In the lower photograph W. A. Marbury, Jr., alumnus, is shown seated be¬ side Victory Carter at the Omega Kappa Barnyard Frolic. They are awaiting the call from the farm kitchen to, Come and get it! . Dances A couple and a half swings away to the accompaniment of Turkey in the Straw at the haymow hop. Everybody dances in the picture below. In fact, the hardwood was crowded to its ample capacity on the occasion of this ex¬ ample of Tech ' s democracy on the dance floor. It was the girls ' night to rule as the Panhellenic Ball whirled through its four hours of backward dancing. Football 1937 Head Coach L. P. (Eddie) McLane, Assist¬ ant Coach Herb Dug- gins, Assistant Coach Mike Wells, and Eddie Wojecki, trainer. The 1937 Head Coach L. P. (Eddie) McLane, who was critically injured in an automobile accident near Bunkie on November 13. While recuperating in Alexandria and Ruston hospitals, Mike Wells, line coach, acted as temporary head mentor of the Bulldogs, having been named to that position by the faculty committee on athletics. With an 11-game schedule, the most ambitious card in the written records of their Bulldog athletic programs, facing them in 1937, Louisiana Tech ' s gridiron giants growled their way through sieges of hard luck and apparent disaster to end their season in a burst of hoped-for but unexpected glory. When the smoke of Tech ' s last and climactic battle of December 4 had thinned sufficiently to permit an accurate study of the results of the Bulldogs ' battles it was found that the victory column of the Canine record-book exactly doubled the smears of red ink from defeats. Six wins, three losses and two ties totaled the 11-game schedule. In the most exciting opening game of many seasons, Louisiana Tech s Bulldogs struck gold on September 17 as they ploughed through the Oklahoma City university Goldbugs 27 to 6, completely upsetting the Oklahoma grid writers ' dope bucket. They had predicted the game a warm-up affair for the Goldbugs For the first time in the history of the new Tech field, every ticket was sold and every seat taken. Over six thousand fans watched Johnny LaBue, John Wyss and Jumping Joe Eagar ac¬ count for the four Canine touchdowns, with Eagar scoring twice in the last quarter. Playing in the rain against their first big-time opponent of the year, the Red and Blue cohorts of Tech met defeat on September 25. They were smashed to the bottom of a sea of mud by a 13 to 0 broadside from the giant guns of the University of Mississippi Rebels at Oxford, Miss. It was the first game they had lost since the tilt with Tulane ' s Green Wave in October, 1936. Due to the poor condi¬ tion of the playing field the light backfield of the Louisianians never got started. But they held the Rebels, led by All-American tackle Bruiser Kinard, to two touchdowns, one of them being scored on a fumble in the second quarter. Rain spoiled the Techmen ' s playhouse for the second consecutive week-end on October 2. With the gridiron soaked and the track surrounding it almost inundated by water, Tech was drubbed and white-washed for the second time during the season. Football Season powerful legion of Illinois Wesleyan Titans, of Bloomington, Ill., whipped the Bulldogs 2 to 0. The game was for the most part a punting duel between the two Tech Dons, Wiley and Darling and Illinois ' Kaska. It was late in the first half that the Titans tallied. With the ball on Tech ' s one-yard stripe Darling was back to kick out of danger. He fumbled a bad pass from center and attempting to run was tackled by Egdorf behind the goal. Inaugurating its conference season, Tech was forced to go the limit to defeat a stubborn army of Millsaps Majors here on October 8, 7 to 0. After 14 days of mudding the Bulldogs finally got back in their winning ways on a dry field. The McLane-coached Techmen scored their all-im¬ portant touchdown late in the first half. With the ball on their 37-yard line, Toad Williams shot a bullet pass to Gard¬ ner on the 25 who lateraled to Eagar, who pranced through the entire Millsaps team for the touchdown. Facing a second Mississippi team on the following week-end the Canines ripped off the scalp of the Mississippi State Teachers. Going into battle with a record of being undefeated and unscored on during 1937, the Yellow Jac¬ kets stung themselves Red and Blue in the face as the Aloys Adkins Houston Beaumont Irvin Causey Don Darling Guy Carroll Robert C. Funderburk Carl Gardner Football Season furious pack of Bulldogs smashed them into a 7 to 0 defeat tearing their hive to shreds in an attempt to find out what made it buzz. The only scoring play of the game came when Joe Eagar flipped a 32-yard pass to Clyde Funder¬ burk, standing on the enemy goal line. Replacing the annual Arkansas-Louisiana State football classic of the Louisiana State Fair in Shreveport, the Bull¬ dogs thoroughly and efficiently thumped Louisiana Normal ' s Demon gridders. An estimated crowd of 10,000 fans sat in the Fair Grounds stadium and saw the Canines win 14 to 0. It was the first time the two schools had ever played on neutral ground and the results were stunning to Shreve- porters who had expected Normal to win easily after their miraculous non-scoring tie with Centenary. Long John Sidney Hewitt scored the first touchdown when a Normal back fum¬ bled after being stopped by Jimmy Sumrall ' s jarring tackle. Hewitt caught the ball and ran 35 yards to score. The other tally came when Barnett swept far around left end from the one-yard line. The game was regarded as a second homecoming for both Tech and Normal. Virginia Keeny, New Orleans, was elected as Miss Louisiana Tech to reign at the contest. Hersell Giddens Wallace Hanna S. X. Lewis Football Season Taking a week ' s rest the Bulldogs went on their longest road trip of the season, to Tampa, Florida, where they added another victim to their victory column on Friday, November 6. The brass-chewing Bulldogs smashed the boiler-plate armor of the Tampa Spartans 26 to 13, running up a total of 354 yards from scrimmage to the 81 of the Florida eleven, and chalked up 17 first downs to five for their opponents. Scoring touchdowns for Tech were Darling, Guy Irish Car- roll, Emory B. Williams and Merton Barnett. Tough breaks got their first good lick at the Canines here on November 12. Two well-drilled packs of Bulldog footballers, each showing great defensive strength, scratch¬ ed, clawed, kicked and chewed their way to a scoreless draw, in a dog-fight that saw Southwestern ' s dogs match tooth for fang every trick that Louisiana Tech ' s battle-wise Bulldogs attempted. Several times Tech almost pushed the ball across. With three minutes left to play the local Bull¬ dogs rammed the oval to the S. L. I. one-foot line, but couldn ' t score on any of four attempts. The game ended a few min¬ utes later with the ball in Southwestern ' s possession on their own three-yard line. It was the day following the Southwestern disappoint- Herbert Massey James Mize George Rajcan Oscar Wells Don Wiley Football Season merit, November 13, that the fickle fates turned all their ill- fortune against the Tech team. Head Mentor Eddie Mc- Lane and assistant coaches Mike Wells and Herb Duggins were seriously injured in an automobile accident near Bunkie. McLane was the most critically injured while Wells and Duggins were less seriously hurt. The trio of coaches were returning from Baton Rouge where they had witnessed the L. S. U.-Auburn football game. Wells and Duggins were held under a physician ' s care for a comparatively short time, while McLane was forced to remain in an Alexandria hospital for several months. In the absence of the athletic director, Coach Wells was appointed temporary head mentor. Then came the Louisiana college calamity. Tech, 12— Louisiana college, 13. Emotionally unbalanced and on a nervous edge the Bulldogs went to Pineville and sank to a new low as far as football was concerned, of which they weren ' t thinking very enthusiastically. Coach McLane was across the river still in a critical condition. Members of the Wildcat team they were playing had furnished blood to their injured coach for transfusions in an effort to save his life. But in spite of their low ebb of morale, the Techmen almost won the game. The win-starved Wildcats used up Merton Barnett John S. Hewitt Ray Nitter James Sumrall ■ Football Season speaking, between the two schools for almost seven years, Louisiana Tech and Centenary met again on the gridiron. Playing in Ruston, the Bulldogs were held to an unexpected 7 to 7 draw by an unusually powerful Gentleman eleven. Tech scored within three minutes of the opening whistle. With Jumping Joe Eagar in the role as passer and Clyde Funderburk playing the receiver ' s part the Bulldogs slipped a touchdown past the shocked Centenarians. Eagar sucked the Gent defensive over to the right and when it seemed he would be smeared for a 20-yard loss he glued a spot pass into the waiting arms of Alton Westbrook, standing on the Centenary 15. Two plays later Eagar completed another pass to Funderburk who ran five yards for the score. Eagar ' s kick was high, but good. Centenary retaliated, however, before the initial quarter was over. Weenie Bynum went on a 20-yard jaunt from the Tech 39 down the eastern sidelines. He was tackled so hard he was almost knocked through a fence at the edge of the playing field and had to be removed from the game. He was replaced by Grandma Stone who scored the Centenary touchdown from Tech ' s four-yard line after the Bulldogs were penalized 15 yards for over-emphasis on roughness. Swindell all nine of their story-book lives and borrowed eight from their Kitten off-spring to scratch the Bulldogs into defeat— the biggest upset of the year for Tech. The Canines scored both their touchdowns in the final frame. With a first down on their own 41-yard stripe Hanna passed to Funderburk who lateraled to Gardner who gave the ball back to Hanna on another lateral who went over for the score. The kick was wide. Then with 30 seconds to play Adams caught a 6-yard pass from behind the goal line. The attempt to con¬ vert was wide, however. Rebounding from the Louisiana college disgrace the Techmen upset the University of South Dakota. Bulldog foot¬ ball of the deep south proved disastrous to the exploring horde of Coyotes. Honored guests at the Thanksgiving day grid banquet the Redshirted visitors thoughtlessly stole a look into Louisiana Tech ' s Canines ' bone-room and got their ears pinned back with a resounding 20 to 6 thumping. The game has been called the cleanest ever played at Tech, the Bulldogs being charged 5 yards for being off sides—the only penalty of the contest. Although freshman football at Louisiana Tech was considered far below par during the 1937 sea¬ son, several individual players were developed by Head Freshman Coach George (Blue) Hogg who are expected to step into the weakened ranks of the Red and Blue varsity next season and efficiently plug the gaps caused by the exodus of seniors this year. The team played four games and lost all of them. They scored only six points all season, those against Centenary. No contests were played at home. Texarkana ' s Junior college eleven proved the first nemesis on the Bullpup card. Playing in Tex¬ arkana the Hoggmen were beaten 30-0. In 1936 the first-year men lost 66-0 to the same team. In their second battle a burly legion of Kilgore Junior collegians ran over the Techmen 27-0. Kilgore kept running in fresh teams, composed of men who outweighed the Pups by 10 to 15 pounds. Smart football beat the frosh in their next campaign. Going to Shreveport the Tech youngsters were dazzled by a brilliant attack by the Baby Gents. The Bullpups scored with only one minute left to play. Kenneth McGuire broke through the enemy line to block a punt on Centenary ' s 30-yard line. Ralph James grabbed the loose ball and thundered across for the only Tech score of the season. Playing the Normal Imps at Natchitoches the freshmen ran into a team raging for revenge. The Normal varsity had been beaten 14-0 by the Bulldogs at Shreveport ' s State Fair earlier in the season. Tech ' s burrheads were swamped 33-0. A scheduled game with Louisiana college ' s Kittens, the last on their card for the season, was called off by officials following a serious automobile accident in which three Tech coaches were injured. Front row — Adger, Horton, Williamson, Hartsfield, Miller, Eaqar, McCrea and Funderburk. oa Handicapped by inexperience, Louisiana Tech ' s 1937-38 cagers finished their season with a mark far below the 50-50 average. They won only five contests out of 14 played for a .357 record. Only three men could boast any previous varsity experience when Coach Herb Duggins gave the iriitial call for training early in December. Captain Fred Miller, top-ranking guardian of the Tech basket, Earl Cole and W. A. Farmer Jones made up the triumvirate of battle-weaned veterans who could successfully pass the test of basketball bombardments. They formed the nucleus of Tech ' s start¬ ing five. Indications at the start of the season were that the Bulldog band would prove a winning team in spite of the lack of capable reserves. Several sophomores with brilliant freshman records were groom¬ ed to round out the quintet. But there were few times that the oldsters and tyros clicked as a winning five. Only two men on the Tech roster failed to penetrate the ozone at the six-foot height. They were lit¬ tle Jo-Jo Eagar, of football fame and Cajun Duke Hartsfield. Both were graduates of a fairly successful freshman team of last season. Drilled in the exponents of a fast-breaking offense, the local lads had the height and speed that was capable of breaking loose at any moment to rain the opposition ' s goal with baskets and defeat. But they broke loose only five times. L. T. Hawk Whitten and George Mickey Rooney were two sophomores who were highly touted to win a place on the first string Canine crew. Both Whitten and Rooney made good, but Rooney drop¬ ped out of school at mid-term to leave a gaping hole in the Tech defense at center. The loss of Rooney was off-set, however, by Milton Red Lewis, another sophomore, who became eligible to play varsity ball after the first semester. Lewis height and steadiness made him an outstanding player, but inexperi¬ ence slowed him up. The rapid improvement of Joe Williams, burly guard, won him a regular position after the first few contests. Williams is one of the best defensive players to ever wear the Red and Blue. He is a sopho¬ more and has two years more to pound the hardwood. Only two seniors were lost at the closing curtain of the season ' s cage drama. They were Earl Cole and Fred Miller. And there will be only one senior on the 1938-39 team—W. A. Jones. In the event that Duggins ' sophomore stars bloom as they are expected to, the Bulldogs will prove a definite title threat in S. I. A. A. championship circles. Men who will provide the basic material for next year ' s squad include the single senior, W. A. Jones and seven juniors. They are Butler Eakin, Milton Lewis, Gordon Adams, Joe Williams, Duke Hartsfield, L. T. Whitten and Joe Eagar. But winning a varsity berth next year will not be an easy mat¬ ter for the varsitymen who saw service this year. Storming out of the Bullpup ranks are five freshmen who made up the greatest first-year team that Tech has had in many years in 1938. Bill Andreola, from Shreveport, and four Indiana products, Ding Merriott, Charlie Carr, Bob Phillips and Ralph O ' Haver will doubtless prove a nemesis to the ambitions of several of the juniors. The ' 38 freshmen made a consistent habit of defeating the varsity in practice battles during the winter sports season of the current year. Under Eddie Wojecki, popular young coach of the glove squad, the Canines finished the most successful season they have had since the sport was introduced here some three years ago. The Bulldogs won five matches, lost three and tied one, the best any Tech boxing team has ever done. Wojecki attributed the success of his team entirely to the boxers, taking little credit for his work. We had our best year due to the fact that we had better material than any we had ever had before— there was more interest shown on the part of the boys who went out. Next year should prove even more successful, Wojecki said. We ' ll have a tough time filling Don Wiley ' s gloves, but with the exception of John Wiley, Clayton Lomax, Rex Holstead and Charlie Rountr ee we ' ll have a sophomore team—all lettermen. Merle Bazer, Rip Pipes, Jack Jones, Kenny McGuire and Loy Henry will all be back. Pros¬ pects look plenty good now. Tech opened its season in Shreveport this year, battling Centenary to a draw. In the next match they met a touring team of Southwestern sluggers from Lafayette. The Bulldogs were hopelessly outclassed and inexperience proved disastrous to them. They lost the match IV 2 to 6 V 2 . Between terms the battered Bulldogs went to New Orleans where they ran into a barrage of gloves from the paws of Loyola ' s Wolves. The Canines were whitewashed, losing eight fights. But Tech ' s winning side of the ledger finally got an entry. Going to Jackson, Miss., the win-starved Techmen slugged the Millsaps Majors all over the ring to take a 5-3 decision. With the taste of blood fresh in their mouths, the Wojeckimen came back to Ruston and on the night following the Millsaps victory slammed the Loyola Wolves for their second win of the season. The final score was 5-3 in Tech ' s behalf. Then came the Oklahoma A. and M. match. The touring Cowboys came into the Bulldog kennel, sore from a beating at Monroe by Northeast Center of L. S. U., and gave notice of pulling no leather in their determination to trample the Techmen. History, however, repeated itself, the Bulldogs winning 5 V 2 to 2 ¥ 2 , the same score by which they whipped the Oklahomans in 1937. Rain chased away the sunshine that had come by four Tech victories in a row. Following the Millsaps massacre the Bulldogs went to Lafayette for a set-to with Southwestern and dropped their third match of the year bVz to 2 l A But the biblical prophesy that there would be a rainbow after the rain came true in the land of Canine. In a long awaited slug-fest with the mittened legion of Centenary, the Bulldogs got revenge from their draw earlier in the season at Shreveport and hammered out a soul-satisfying, but narrow vic¬ tory, winning by the margin of one point. Baseball Prospects for a winning baseball team seemed assured for Louisiana Tech in 1938 as the K-9 clubbers swung into their April battles with a slightly better than .500 average of wins and losses. Under the direction of Larry Fox, former head baseball mentor who filled in for injured Coach Eddie McLane this year, the Bulldogs have developed one of the best collegiate hurling corps in the nation. The mound staff is made up of Xerxes Lewis and Lawrence Hinton, seniors, Clyde Stinnett, a junior and Hiram Eakin and Bob Coates, sophomores. Out of some of the best collective material to ever report for the diamond sport at Tech the Bulldogs have developed a well- rounded infield and a brilliant trio of outer-gardeners. Although they started their season with a considerable lack of base hits, the Canines have gradually found their batting eyes, as proven April 4 when they clubbed three Centenary hurlers for 24 safeties. Joe Eagar, shortstop, leads off at the plate for the Bulldogs. He is followed by John LaBue, second baseman, and Joe Williams, leftfielder. Jimmy Sumrall, rightfielder, is the clean up swatter and is followed by Aloys Adkins, third baseman Milton Red Lewis, first sacker, comes next and centerfielder Charlie Caston follows Either Pat Meeks or Harold Napper, catchers, hit eighth with one of the five pitchers swinging last. Louisiana Tech opened its collegiate season with a six-game road trip into Mississippi and Alabama. Leaving home on the night of March 23 they went by bus to Jackson, Miss., where they swamped Millsaps 8-1 the next day. Immediately following the game they left for Birmingham, Ala., arriving there at about 2 a. m. the next morning with a two-game series with Howard due to get under way that afternoon. Howard took the first game 8-2, although Clyde Stinnett struck out 12 enemy batsmen. The Bulldogs came back the next day, however, to nose out Howard 4-2 behind Hinton ' s 7-hit hurling. Hinton whiffed 12 men also, equalling Stinnett ' s feat of the day before. Going to Tuscaloosa, Ala., the Techmen dropped a two-game series to the University of Alabama nine. The Crimson Tide took the first battle 3-0, with Jack Kirkland, their ace righthander, giving up only four hits. The next day Clyde Stinnett pitched a one-hit game but Alabama took advantage of errors to win 4-3 on a ninth inning photo-finish rally. Returning to Millsaps the Bulldogs whipped Millsaps again 8-5 to give them a .500 average on their trip. Opening their home season, the Tech 9 made Purdue University the goats of an April Fool ' s Day joke, winning 5-2, Stinnett pitching four-hit ball. The next day, however, Purdue took the second and last game of the series 5-3, on a two-run rally in the tenth inning. Centenary pitchers provided plenty of fodder for the Techmen ' s batting averages on April 4 in Shreveport. Breaking loose with a cloud-burst of hits that had been saturated in their bats all season, the Bulldogs collected 24 safeties to humiliate the Gentlemen 29-8 Other games remaining on the Canines ' schedule include three contests with Iowa, three with Centenary, two with L. S. U., two with Millsaps, four with Mississippi College. Several other games are expected to be announced later. Gol Although only two lettermen—Billy Thurmon and Emmett Laddie Hall—reported to Madison Hall, golf coach, at the be¬ ginning of workouts this year, last season ' s glittering Canine team of stars have been so replaced by an influx of new material that the 1938 edition of Louisiana Tech divot-diggers must be classed a conservative fair. But not until the Bulldogs prove their worth under fire can their efficiency as a team be measured or any doubt removed. Billy Thurmon, twice a letterman, holds down the No. 1 posi¬ tion on the squad. He is a native of Ruston and has played golf for several years, getting his share of tournament experience as a member of the Ruston golf club. Laddie Hall, son of the team ' s coach, is the No. 2 player. Hall ' s tremendous power has made him the long-distance driver on the team. He, too, has had much experience in match play on several Louisiana courses. A freshman, Ivan Malm, has been placed in the No. 3 slot. He has had considerable experience with the shafted clubs and possesses an excellent approach game. But he has not yet been under fire in an intercollegiate match. Socking Sid Frazier, from Birmingham, Ala., won the No. 4 position from Marvin Gleason, who was shifted to the No. 5 spot. Frazier, an all-round freshman athlete, has in practice almost sur¬ passed the lengthy drives of Hall. The Alabama boy, who packs a great deal of his pigskin power in his swings, has a natural follow-through. He has excellent possibilities of developing into a top-notch golfer, inasmuch as he is eligible for three more years on the squad. Gleason is also a newcomer to the team although he has been in school for three years. He has shown promise in practice and should come into his own next season. The Bulldog greensmen had played only one match up to April 1. They defeated the state champion team from Neville high school 12-6 in a practice match at Monroe. A return meet¬ ing of the two clubs had been set for April 8, in Ruston. These contests were arranged in order to get the Techmen in shape for their first big malch—at Baton Rouge. The divot-diggers were scheduled to take part in a three-way match with Louisiana State University and Spring Hill of Mobile, Ala., at the Bayou Bengals ' course April 14, at Baton Rouge. Other matches were on the fire for the Bulldogs with Normal and Millsaps. Tennis Boasting an all-round bang-up crew, the Louisiana Tech racqueteering netmen are apparently headed for their most suc¬ cessful season in the history of Bulldog tennis. At least the squad as a whole has shown more stuff this year than any other since the sport was taken under the wing of the athletic department several years ago. The Techmen are coached by Francis L. Afeman, of the biology department. Well-drilled both defensively and offensively, the Canines had, up to April 8, won every match played. They outstroked the Louisiana College Wildcats 4-3 at Pineville and ran wild against Louisiana Normal. The Demons barely escaped a shut¬ out, losing 6-1. Playing with the Ruston town team, the Bulldogs helped whitewash a Monroe city squad 7-0. Charles Russ, Ruston, and Dick Brannon, Alexandria, were elected co-captains of the Bulldogs. Russ, probably the best player in Ruston, is certainly the most outstanding member of the team. He is ranked No. 1, with Brannon holding down the No. 2 post. Brannon led the team last season. Noble McCuan, a newcomer from Mississippi, is rated No. 3 on the team. He has a well-balanced game, and shows promise of going far as a tennis player. In the No. 4 slot is Billy Fouche, a sweet-stroking sophomore from Shreveport. Fouche is one of the two lettermen from the ' 37 team that returned this year. The No. 5 position was won by J. W. McLemore, a freshman from Winnsboro. This lanky burrhead should develop into one of Tech ' s best players before he graduates. Russ and Brannon team up for the No. 1 doubles, with Mc¬ Cuan and McLemore taking care of the second place doubles. A wealth of material reported to the coaches in charge when the first call was sounded for the tennis team. Among those who showed great promise, but who failed to make the first team this year were Leon Fergus, Billy Newman, Pope Almon and Robert Cummins. With the exception of Cummins, who graduates, they are expected to make things tough for the ' 38 team members to win a place next season. All they need is a little more competitive experience.
