Tech products have been made largely from pure Anglo-Saxon material coming from the best homes of the State. Our teachers are always in demand. Our Engineers are employed frequently before graduation. Arts and Science Graduates are filling important places all over the Nation. Today we are beginning a new era. We originally faced North; now we face West. Our campus has been changed. The Leche Building has been completed, thus giving us even better opportunities for a greater service. Our Student Body is composed of serious-minded young men and young women who are imbued with the idea of usefulness. The members of our Faculty are capable and are giving the best of their lives to the work of the institution. All are laboring together to build a greater Louisiana Tech. E. S. Ruling as queen of the festivities was Peggy Moseley, who shared her throne with her chosen king, Dick Brannon. They were regally attired in robes of purple. The royal party was composed of Princess Virginia Keeny and her prince, Clem Byrd; Princess Sybil Wilson and Prince Eddie Wojecki; Princess Sara Cooper and Prince Herman Hewett; Princess Carolyn Null and Prince Lamar Stall. The gowns of the royal ladies were of white satin and their corsages were of Talisman and American Beauty roses. The late Samuel Augustas (Gus) Dickson was made Honorary King of Tech ' s Fourth Annual Engi¬ neers Day held on Saturday, April 3. In com¬ memoration of Gus a large portrait of him was presented to the Engineering Student Body by Davis Studio, local photographers. All arrangements for the festivities of the day were under the direction of E. H. Holstead, president of the Tech Engineers. The Crowning event of the day ' s activities was the annual Engineers Ball at which, R. G. Hart and Georgia Grey Gwin ruled as King and Queen. Their royal party included, Helen Hays, Beryl Tebbets, Edna Terral, Charles Taylor, Camille Haley, Carl Jordan, Irene Goyne and Eddie Lomax. The Tech Orchestra, directed by Miss Doris Haskell added much to the success of the performance. A week long tour, February 19-26, of North Louisiana was made by the Opera Cast, the Men ' s Glee Club, the Band O ' Glee, and the Tech Orchestra. Their itinerary included fifteen towns. E. S. For numbers of years Tech students had sought a unity whereby they could func¬ tion with the Administration to the best advantage of both groups. A student body council was elected by secret ballot. Herb Duggins, who coaches the football ends, the basketba ll squad, and the track team, has justi¬ fied his heavy responsibility by turning out some of the finest ends ever developed here and molding some of the best cage teams and track and field squads that ever donned the Red and Blue togs. George Blue Hogg, freshmen mentor, came to Tech along with Coach McLane and has turned out the best frosh teams to ever perform here, thus building up the varsity yearly. Mike Wells, football line coach, has consistently welded a fast, aggressive group of linesmen who have helped pave the way for the glorious gridiron victories of Tech. Eddie Wojecki, trainer, was affectionately dubbed Doc by the athletes to whom he ministered to alleviate their injuries; and his patience and efficiency has won a place in the heart of every one of the Tech athletes. Hogg Wells Wojecki Athletic Director Eddie McLane, shown at the right, is completing his third year at the helm of Tech ' s athletic department and school officials have stated that he will be retained indefinitely. Coming to Tech in 1934, Coach McLane has turned out better teams each year and thus has been able to draw up more attractive cards each year in all sports and has put Tech back in the ath¬ letic sun. Aside from the successes of the various teams, Coach McLane has improved the athletic facilities considerably. A new concrete stadium was erected and equipped with lights for night contests. A wire fence was built around the football field and various beautification projects have been carried on. In ad¬ dition the physical education department was en¬ larged and now takes care of all the men students. FOOTBALL SEASON With one of the most ambitious gridiron schedules ever drawn up here facing the Bulldogs, the Louisiana Tech football squad completed a sea¬ son of ups and downs, winning six games, tieing one and losing two, to score 153 points for the year to their opponents ' 47. Under the brilliant tutelage of Athletic Director Eddie McLane, the Ruston representatives drew high praise from loyal fanatics for their superb, deter¬ mined efforts in all their contests. Starting off the season, the Bulldogs trounced the West Tennessee Teachers at Ruston 44 to 0 before what has been called the largest opening-day crowd of any season here. Coach McLane used subs freely after stacking up a comfortable lead on the in¬ vaders. In this high-scoring battle Carroll struck pay-dirt thrice, and Gardner, Whitman, Hanna and Westbrook each took a trip to the promised land. Traveling down to Lafayette for their second game, the Techmen were forced to use all they had in their bag of tricks to overcome a 7-point lead es¬ tablished by Southwestern in the first half. How¬ ever, the Ruston men came through in grand style and held the S.L.I. men scoreless the final half while they garnered 22 points. Massey and Mitchell each scored in the third period, and Hanna chalked up another marker in the final frame. r The result of the next game was as much a sur¬ prise to the Tech football squad as it was to the fans. A powerful group of Mississippi State Teach¬ ers invaded Ruston and taught the Techsters a thing or two as they spanked the Bulldogs, 12 to 7. Tech scored first in the second period when Wyss blocked a punt and recovered across the goal line for the score. Then the Teachers turned loose their scoring machine and it was a sad tale for the Canines. The Mississippi men scored in the second and third quarters with Patrick, their ace ballcarrier, lugging the pigskin across both times. In the final stanza Tech staged a drive that looked as if it might result in another touchdown but as the Bulldogs placed the ball on the Pedagogues ' one-yard line after sparkling runs by Carroll, the timekeeper sounded his note of doom as he blew the whistle ending the game. Leaving home again, the Techmen went to Nat¬ chitoches, where they met and subdued the Normal Demons. The final score was 32 to 0 in favor of the Bulldogs and all the alibis of the Normalites could not erase the fact that Tech possessed a top- notch team that night. Then came that memorable classic with the Green Wave of Tulane in New Orleans. On this occasion about 600 loyal fans of the Bulldogs made the trip to the Crescent City to support the morale of the Ruston men. The largest crowd that a Tech team has ever played before witnessed the struggle, as 13,000 turned out on that warm, clear afternoon. The people of New Orleans came prepared to see the Tu- FOOTBALL, SEASON lane squad stage a scoring carnival. They were not disappointed the first quarter as Tulane, led by their efficient Bill Mattis, scored three touchdowns and a safety for a total of 22 points. But all that took place in the first quarter. What happened thereafter drew praise from all the sports commentators in New Or¬ leans and the loyal Greenies even admitted that they were surprised. Tech scored two touchdowns in the fourth period, not on the second string, but on that highly-touted first team that had not been de¬ feated at that time. Rajcan tore through the line of the Greenies, batted up an attempted pass by Mattis, caught the ball, and ran across the goal line for the first score. That was the beginning. A few minutes later, Mitchell tossed the pigskin to Trimble for 35 yards and Trimble ran the remaining 23 yards for a touchdown. Then the Tech supporters went wild and yelled themselves hoarse, clamoring for vic¬ tory, but Tulane gathered its dazzled forces and held the Techmen the rest of the game. But the fans were more than pleased with the performance of the Bulldogs who had been the first to score two touch¬ downs against the then-invincible Wave. In their own backyard for the next game, the Bulldogs met a strong aggregation of University of Tampa Spartans from Tampa, Fla., who almost played the Techmen to a scoreless tie as they held Tech scoreless for 53 minutes. Then with a few minutes left to play, Mitchell heaved a pass to Sum- r merall across the goal line for the score, giving the Ruston men a 6-to-0 victory. Two factors drove the Techsters to victory in the next game, which was played against the Missis¬ sippi Millsaps Majors. First, it was Homecoming Day with about 4,500 persons watching that strug¬ gle, and secondly, and most important, this was the only team that had defeated Tech the previous sea¬ son. Tech took the measure of the Majors, 13 to 0, as they scored in the first and final periods. The first touchdown came as the result of a 65-yard run by Hanna across the last stripe. The next score was made by Mitchell when he intercepted a pass on the Majors ' 35-yard line and ran for a touchdown. The great fluke of the season for the Bulldogs was their appearance against the Louisiana College Wildcats here which resulted in a 6-6 tie. The Cats had been pointing for Tech all season and they proceeded to turn loose everything they had with the deadlock resulting. The Cats scored first in the initial period as Whatley carried the ball over for a score. The Bulldogs did not score until the final period as Hanna made a 42-yard pass to William¬ son for a touchdown . In their final game of the season here against the Illinois Wesleyan Titans on Thanksgiving Day, FOOTBALL SEASON the Canines performed the spectacular and scored two touchdowns in less than one minutes of actual playing time and that was all the scoring by either side in that game as Tech won, 12 to 0. In the third period, Hanna passed to Roach for a touchdown. For some strange reason the Titans then decided to kick-off. Tech met the Mississippi Millsaps Majors as a highlight of the day ' s activities and spurred on by the 4,500 yelling fanatics and seeking revenge because the Majors were the only team to defeat them the previous season, the Bulldogs subdued the invaders 13 to 0. The royal party consisting of Maid Rosemary Breed, Maid Corolyn Cupp, Maid Eleanor Mitchell, Queen Nettie Faye Cooper, and Maid Ruby Chandler. Highlights of the Day 1. Hanna making one of the two touchdowns registered by the Bulldogs against the Majors. 2. Queen Nettie Faye Cooper presenting the football to be used in the contest to Tech ' s captain, Mohawk Phillips, as the Millsaps captain looks on. 3. Tech ' s band on parade through the town in pre-game ceremonies. 4. Float with queen and maids making their entrance on the football field. 5. Coach McLane having a watch fastened on him by Captain Phillips and Co-Captain Mitchell. The watch was given to Coach McLane by the Rus- ton Chamber of Commerce. Under the able direction of Coach George Blue Hogg, the Louisiana Tech freshmen squad played two intercollegiate games, winning one and tie- ing the other. Although the squad was comparatively small this season the players were of the type that could and did go the full sixty minutes in their contests. This rugged, hard-charging, and speedy group of football men will be a val¬ uable addition to the varsity squad next year when even bigger and better teams will be played by the Techmen. Opening their season against the Normal Imps, the Bullpups looked them over and took their measure 16 to 0. Normal had a tough time trying to keep their men from being battered by the line-smashing tactics of the Pups and the Imps had to resort to frequent substitutions but the Tech frosh played for 53 minutes before a substitution was made. The other battle was with the Centenary Little Gents who held the Pups to a scoreless tie. Neither team ever seriously threatened to score as the two teams see-sawed up and down the field. The freshmen numeral winners included: Emmett Hall, Carroll Floyd, Pat Meeks, R. B. Basco, Joe Eagar, Emile Nogaskey, Victor Blodgett, Gordon Adams, H. W. Leach, and L. H. Rogers. Basketball 19 3 7 Resume With a group of hoopsters composed in the main of ' sophomores, the Louisiana Tech basket¬ ball squad played a schedule of nineteen games, winning nine, and losing ten, scoring a total of 586 points to their opponents ' 698. The Canines, under the supervision of Coach Herb Duggans, used the Wisconsin type of play which features a fast-breaking offense and a man-to-man defense. Starting off their season here, the Bulldogs were the victors over Illinois college by a close score. But a road journey that pitted them against Louisiana college, Southwestern, Tulane, and Loyola twice left the Techsters in the red as they were only able to defeat S. L. I. and Loyola once. Coming back to Ruston, the Canines met the Gents from Centenary, who took their measure easily. Back on the road again for a pair of games with L. S. U. in Baton Rouge, the Ruston lads were trounced by the Tigers in both contests. Their next encounter in Ruston was a loss to the Normal Demons. Playing in Shreveport, the T-men were again beaten by Centenary. A series of six games at their own lair turned out rather well for the Bulldogs, who won four and lost two. They defeated Southwestern, Mississippi State Teachers, Louisiana college, and Loyola. They were downed by Cen¬ tenary and Loyola. A second trip to Shreveport that closed out the four-game series with the Gents re¬ sulted in another loss by the Bulldogs. The Bulldog battlers were coached by Eddie Wojecki, who introduced intercollegiate boxing here last year. Coach Wojecki was faced with the task of moulding a fresh group of: men into shape for their bouts as Don Wiley and Ben Gill were the only lettermen to return for regular practice on the squad of ' 37. The Ruston ring masters fought to a 4-4 draw in their first two battles, the opener with South¬ western in Lafayette, and the second with the Centenary Gentlemen in Rus on. The next two rounds of bouts were marked up as, victories for the Red and Blue bearers as they beat Southwestern in Ruston, 5 to 3, and downed the highly-touted Oklahoma A. M. fighters here 5 h to 21 2 . Centenary took the starch out of the Techmen in the next battle in Shreveport as the Gents measured the Ruston squad 6 V 2 to IV 2 . Sachs, the Louisiana Tech divot diggers have been working-out on various golf links in anticipation of a successful season. They have been the guests of golf organiza¬ tions in Ruston, Jonesboro, Hodge, and Monroe. With three lettermen returning prospects for a winning team loom very bright. Jack Armstrong, Billy Thurmon, Fred Hines are the returning veterans and their experience coupled with the driving ability of Emmett Hall and W. R.
