FOOTBALL RESUME Under the able direction of their skipper, Coach Eddie McLane, the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs found comparatively smooth ' sailing on their nine-game ■ ' voyage with one exception. The Bulldogs ran ' ' aground on a reef. the Mis- sissippi Millsaps Majors, who sunk the championship aspirations of the Techmen as they unloosed a deadly barrage of passes that netted them a one-piont victory and the Bulldogs ' only defeat of the season. Using the Notre Dame system of football. Coach McLane developed an efficient high-scoring machine that never failed to score under 20 points in any game and ended the year with a total of 253 points while holding the opposing elevens to 42 points. Fans of North Louisiana believed in the grid prowess of the Techsters enough lo juirchase 500 season tickets that enabled authorities of the institution to install lights on the field and treat the fans to night football, the first that liad e er been played at Tech. The McLane-tutored lads opened their big guns against the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles from Cookeville, Tenn.. who were subdued easilv. 44 to 0. The Ruston team scored in every period with Mitchell, Carroll. Brooks. Hanna. Darling. Wiley, and Hasha all sharing in the point-gathering jubilee. The Bulldogs ' next game was with Southwestern and this was tlie ncrasidii p| the dedication of Tech ' s new $25,000 concrete stadium, featuring talks b I. H. Harris, state superintendent of education, and E. L. Stephens, presidciil nl Smilh- weslern, in pre-game ceremonies. Taking full vengeance for defeats intlictcd on them the past two seasons by the Lafayette squad, the Tech (Canines pranced up and down the field to leave the S. L. I. men on tlie short end of a 25-10-0 si-ore. Touchdowns were scored by Carroll. Mitchell. Hinkie. and Heucll. As the highlight of the Homecoming Day activities, the Techsters paraded their , wares on the rectangle for the benefit of 4,000 loval fans who saw the arch ri .ils • of the Bulldogs, the Normal Demons, suffer a . ' 2 to defeat at the hands of the ■• ' ■ . Ruston eleven. Turner. Gardner. Beckett, Hinkie. and Hewett, each toted the oval ■ ' - ' across into the promised land. ' By this time fans began to talk in terms of an untied, undefeated, and un- scored-on Tech team but they reckoned without the Millsaps Majors. This group of highly-touted air raiders proceeded to lay down an aerial attack that netted them 21 points and then held a determined Tech rally to 20 points, thereby blasting all three hopes of the Bulldog devotees. McDaniel, a glue-fingered halfback, caught all three of the touchdown passes that resulted in the Canines ' heart-breaking de- feat. Hewett, Thigpen, and Carroll, accounted for the tallies made by the Red and Blue bearers. Not allowing the defeat by Millsaps to dampen their arder. the McLane pro- teges came back the next week-end and took the measure of the Choctaws of Mis- sissippi College by a 21 to 7 count. Again a pass was the cause of the opponents score as Green, Indian end. snatched a pass that resulted in their lone tally. Turner, Tech halfback, rose to great heights as a ground-gainer when he ambled off two long touchdown runs, one for 62 yards and the other for 6o yards. Mitchell scored the other tally for the Bulldogs. In their first contest without home-town support, the Bulldogs exhibited their championship caliber as they triumphed over tlie Louisiana Cnllcgc W ildcats at Pineville. The Wildcats assumed the lead in the first quarter with Rush, stellar Louisiana College halfback, running over a touchdown to give the Pineville man a 7-point lead. After making a marker but failing to convert the extra point in ■ ' second quarter, the Ruston team found its power in t : ?n j?- - Si half and when the i ' -% game ended the score read 25 to 7 in favor of the battling Bulldogs. Coody. Hewett, Turner, and Hanna were the touchdown-makers in this tilt. The next foe of the Techmen, the Mississippi State Teachers, was an associa- tion team that had not met defeat prior to their trip to Ruston and were considered potential trouble-makers, but the Bulldogs stopped everything they had. triumphing 27 to 0. Phillips, lanky end. chalked up two of the markers, the first on an end- around-end play, and the second on a pass that netted 27 vards to strike pav dirt. Gotten and Wiley made the other two touchdowns. Finally, the Techsters came to that game which everv member of the squad wished to participate in as Coach McLane took his neophytes to Tampa, Florida, where they engaged in a skirmish with the University of Tampa Spartans. The medicine that the Bulldogs had brewed for the Spartans proved to be too potent a solution for the lads in the land of sunshine, who went down before the frollick- ing Tech eleven, 32 to 7. Hasha and Hinkie each made two touchdowns with the other being marked up by Darling. Carter, Spartan end, made the tally registered bv the Florida lads. FOOTBALL LETTERMEN OF 1935 Captain Madison Brooks playing his last year for the Bulldogs turned in one of the best performances of his grid career at the center position. He was an ex- cellent play diagnostican, and his services at backing up the line will be missed. Alternate-captain Bill Ruple. husky guard, finished his football glory in a blaze of glory as he stopped play after play tried over his post. His services will be a sore loss to the Tech squad which he bolstered by his confident air. Ben Mohawk Phillips, lanky terminal player, was selected by his ieanimalcs to captain the 1936 edition of the Bulldogs. This action gave praise where praise was due as Mohawk proved to be one of the best ends ever developed at Tech. Il I ilky . Billy JMitchell, haicl-Lliaiiiiiip halfback, was designated by his comrades to teams that he could ■ carry the mail with liis fast, hard-running tactics. Jack Thigpen. senior quarterback, will be missed erv much by the team next year as he was able to select plays best adapted to penetrate the enemy ' s defense and could also diagnose their running plays. He was also an excellent ball-carrier. An unexpected star, Archie Turner, big, hard-charging halfback, was devel- oped, who exhibited hither-to unsuspected power and drive as he ripped and tore the opposing lines to shreds. He served the last year for the Bulldogs and his smashing ability will be hard to replace. Fred Beckett, playing his last year for the Bulldogs at the terminal ))()sl. will be missed as he was adept at snatching passes and stopping plays. Will Gotten, player at the halfback post, gave a remarkable performance for the season and his ground-gaining pace will be hard to replace next year. W. C. Johnston, husky guard, in his senior year found his true power as nt turned back play after play tried by the opposition for no gain. Thomas Deas. guard, was one of the best guards on the 1935 team and Ids last year proved his championship caliber. Aloys Adkins promises to be one of the best guards ever seen at Tech as he turned in consistently fine performances the entire season. Houston Beaumont, husky, hard-hitting tackle, in his first year on the Red and serve as alternate-captain on the team next year. Billy showed the opposing Blue squad, gave promise of being a top-notch performer ere his grid career ends. Guy GarroU. nifty broken-field performer, may be called the rubber man of the team as he showed ability to abr orb punishment and still carry the ball for substantial gains. Irvin Gausey, center, will be a valuable man on the squad for the next two years as he gave a fine example at backing up the line and diagnosing plays. Don Darling, quarterback, proved to be an excellent field general and uill be a valuable man in the coming two seasons. J t Clyde Funderburk. terminal player, was an adept and valuable pass catcher for the Bulldogs in his first year and promises to go toward better things in the coming two seasons. Carl Gardner, signal-caller, turned in a profitable season at the quarterback position and will be one of the mainstays of the team in ' 36 and ' 37. Hershell Wimpy Giddens is the best tackle ever brought to Tecli to perform for the Bulldogs as he continually battered the enemy line to shreds and threw the ball carriers for losses. Wallace ' Jakie Hanna, shifty halfback, promises to be one of the best ball- toters seen here in many years as he rippled off gain after gain for the Bulldogs. Gene Hasha, fast charging end, crashed through the lines of the opposition many times to throw them back. Herman Hewett, hard-charging fullback, will be one of the best ball-carriers ever developed at Tech as he proved his ability to punch the enemy ' s line for yardage. Bunker Hill, big tackle, was one of the main pla yers on the 193.5 team and he should be a permanent addition on the squad in the coming two seasons. W. H. Hinkey, nifty-running halfback, allhough a lightweight, was one of the most consistent yard-gainers on the team. Herbert Massey, fullback, turned in a good season at the power position and should do bigger things in ' 36 and ' 37. James Mize, behomoth tackle, stopped any plays tried by tiie oppunents and should be even better in the coming two years. George Rajcan, guard, hit the opponent ' s lines many times lo tear tlirnugli and spoil the plays and was also a bulwark on the defense. RESUME OF CAGE SEASON Using the style of basketball developed at the University of Wisconsin that features the ' ' slow break, the Louisiana Teqh basketball artists finished a 15-garae season with a total of 11 victories, nine of which were marked up over S. 1. A. A. opponents. This cage record entitled the Techsters to a bid to the S. 1. A. A. tourne lield al Jackson. .Miss., wlu-rc the Bulldogs advanced to the semi-finals. Their first game at the meet resulted in a victory as the Ruston lads defeated the Wofford Terriers 42 to 37, but their next foe, the Western Kentucky five, were too strong for the Bulldogs, who lost 60 to 11. The Techsters started off their year in mid-season style, taking tlicir first tuo engagements by decisi c scores. Louisiana Normal ' s Demons upset the Canines with a two-point win in tlicii third battle. Staging a strong come-back, the Techmen took their next six games as they won out over Mississippi State Teachers, Birmingham-Southern, Tampa University, Southwestern, Mississippi College, and Millsaps. This record spoke well for the sophomore talent u-ed mostly Ijy Coach Eddie McLane in wresting honors from their opponents on the diamond. Tech opened their schedule against a strong Big Ten team, the Purdue University Boiler- makers from Lafayette, Indiana, who played the Bulldogs a set of three game at Ruston. The Boilermakers won two of the trio of tilts when they defeated the Techsters in the first one 3 to 2 lost the second 9 to 1 and then took the rubher game 10 to 5. Four engagements with the Mississippi College Choctaws was next on the baseball program with two being played at Ruston and two at Clinton, Miss. The brace of games at the lair of the Bulldogs were divided but Tech went to the home of the Choctaws and annexed both matches to win the series 3 games to 1. A pair of tilts with the College of Marshall resulted in two more marks in the win column for the Techsters, who subdued the Marshall men 9 to 6 and 8 to 0. The second invading team from the north, the Illinois Wesleyan Titans, proved to be too much for the Techsters, who went down 9 to 4 and 2 to 1 before their clouters. The second invading team from the north ' s aces of the diamond making an extended trip tlirough several northern states and playing three games, all of which were won by the Bulldogs. Tennessee Tech was the first victim of the Canines, who humiliated them 20 to 3 at Memphis, Tenn. A one-game tand with the Titans of Illinois Wesleyan at Bloomington, 111., gave the Tech- man a chance to partly avenge themselves of the former defeatss at the hands of the Titans as Tech took the game 11 to 5. Another team at Bloomington, Illinois Normal, fell under the domination of the Tech batsmen 16 to 2. Three games that were to be played with Purdue ' s Boilermakers at Lafayette, Indiana, and one that was to be played with the Indiana State Teachers had to be cancelled, due to unfavorable weather conditions.
