IN THE NEWS ... As time passed and life rolled on like the Mighty Mississippi River, featured on the inside pages, life in the outer world was drastically different. In politics, President Ronald Reagan and Soviet Leader Mikhail Gorbachev met in Geneva to start the first of many summit meetings. Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos and his wife, Imelda, were ousted from power and replaced, through a free election, by Mrs. Corizan Aquino. Terrorism ripped through the world like never before. Air travel became the major target of terrorists. The earthquake in Mexico left as many as 20,000 dead in Mexico, mainly in the capital. Colombia’s Nevado del Ruiz erupted and caused mudslides that killed up to 25,000. Live Aid, the million dollar concert, and Farm Aid helped relieve the plight of many people here and abroad. The fear of AIDS spread as quickly as the disease itself and Rock Hudson fell victim to this deadly disease. On a lighter note, we were starstruck over “Miami Vice”, The Fridge, Rambo and Wrestlemania. We listened to the sounds of Madonna, The Boss and The Monkeys. 1986 opened as any other year, in the middle of winter. Of course this was the year the seniors had been waiting. As we stayed home from the major flu epidemic, we watched the Space Shuttle Challenger make its last journey and the whole country grieved over its loss. Gas prices fell and the Stock Market rose. As a result of terrorism, the United States attacked Libya and its commander, Khadafy or Gaddafi. We went through the motions and luckily we all survived. As the last senior crossed the stage, the new seniors thought “Just one more year”. Mrs. Sandy Orf tries to give Dr. Wilcox a bath.
