LOUISIANA HIGH SCHOOL 3321 W. Georgia Louisiana, Mo. 63353 ALAMO DEDICATION Mrs. Lula Beth Griffith has been a teacher at Louisiana high school for 22 years. She had previously taught at Licking, MO for eight years. Mrs. Griffith retired from LHS in 1979 but returned in 1981 due to teacher shortages. Mrs. Griffith attended Hickman high school in Columbia, MO. She graduated from Christian (Columbia) College in 1938 and the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1940 with a bachelor of science degree in education. She has also earned 30 graduate hours. Mrs. Griffith has taught English and speech drama at LHS. She was also a class sponsor for 16 years and the National Honor Society sponsor for three years. She is the advisor for the Highlights page that appears in the Press-Journal every two weeks. Mrs. Griffith and her husband, Mr. Melvin Griffith, of 45 years, reside in rural Clarksville. They have three sons and one daughter, and 14 grandchildren. Mrs. Griffith plans to spend her new free time doing volunteer and church work, reading, traveling and doing crewel embroidery. She also plans to follow the activities of her grandchildren. 2 DEDICATION Aaron Hemphill, or “Chief’ has been teaching Industrial Arts in Louisiana for 32 years. Chief began teaching at the old high school in 1954 and then in 1964 he became the Industrial Arts teacher at the present high school. Chief graduated from the Elsberry high school in 1942 and then in 1948 he received a degree from Northeast Missouri State in Kirksville with a major in Industrial Arts and a minor in physical education. In 1948, Chief moved to La. with his wife Margaret, where he has currently been married to for 41 years. They live at 3009 Georgia St., and have three children and nine grandchildren. While at L.H.S. Chief has taught drivers’ education and he has done some coaching besides teaching shop. During his retirement Chief intends to help out with the maintenance and rehauling of district busses and hopefully spend more time hunting and traveling. Chief has given many things to this school and the students. We’re glad to have had him for a teacher and a friend for the past 32 years and we hope that his retirement is as successful as his time at L.H.S. 3 IN THE NEWS ... As time passed and life rolled on like the Mighty Mississippi River, featured on the inside pages, life in the outer world was drastically different. In politics, President Ronald Reagan and Soviet Leader Mikhail Gorbachev met in Geneva to start the first of many summit meetings. Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos and his wife, Imelda, were ousted from power and replaced, through a free election, by Mrs. Corizan Aquino. Terrorism ripped through the world like never before. Air travel became the major target of terrorists. The earthquake in Mexico left as many as 20,000 dead in Mexico, mainly in the capital. Colombia’s Nevado del Ruiz erupted and caused mudslides that killed up to 25,000. Live Aid, the million dollar concert, and Farm Aid helped relieve the plight of many people here and abroad. The fear of AIDS spread as quickly as the disease itself and Rock Hudson fell victim to this deadly disease. On a lighter note, we were starstruck over “Miami Vice”, The Fridge, Rambo and Wrestlemania. We listened to the sounds of Madonna, The Boss and The Monkeys. 1986 opened as any other year, in the middle of winter. Of course this was the year the seniors had been waiting. As we stayed home from the major flu epidemic, we watched the Space Shuttle Challenger make its last journey and the whole country grieved over its loss. Gas prices fell and the Stock Market rose. As a result of terrorism, the United States attacked Libya and its commander, Khadafy or Gaddafi. We went through the motions and luckily we all survived. As the last senior crossed the stage, the new seniors thought “Just one more year”. Mrs. Sandy Orf tries to give Dr. Wilcox a bath. Pictured above at the Hannibal Marching Festival, the band also performed at six football games, eleven basketball games, and three local parades. The band also provided a pit band for the musical, “Annie.” 68 The band’s performances at pep assemblies and games insured that school spirit would be strengthened musically. Mr. Hamilton, band director, plans for an even more successful band next year. Individual members and ensembles also performed well. Six students (Jim Scott, Kim Wheeler, Valeria Love, Christi Traver, Brad Wahlgren, and Rob Fritch) were selected for All-Conference Band. Three ensembles and one solo participated in district contest. The flute quartet composed of Kim Wheeler, Valeria Love, Tracy Pennington, and Kim Wood qualified for state contest as did Valeria Love with her flute solo. Twenty-seven band letters were awarded. This year the John Philip Sousa Award went to Jim Scott and the Music Participation Award was earned by Kim Wheeler. The band’s successful year was concluded with performances at Baccalaureate and Commencement. 69 This year there were only two librarian helpers. They are as follows: Cheryl Irvin and Tammy Kirtlink. Not pictured is Susan Reed, manager. Louisiana had no idea that at the end of the 1985 season that they would be the conference champs, district champs and have a very impressive 10-2 record. Louisiana posted some very important wins during the season. After beating archrival Bowling Green, Louisiana traveled to Pittsfield only to embarass the highly ranked Saukees. It inspired the Bulldogs to win their next seven games before losing to the much larger Fulton. Although the Bulldogs didn’t finish the regular season undefeated they still made the playoffs for the third straight year. Congratulations on a great year Bulldogs. The Bulldogs handled their first opponent, the Westran Hornets, rather easily by a score of 26-0. Their next opponent, the Marceline Tigers, came into the game as the 1 team in the state and proved worthy of that title, defeating the Bulldogs for only the second time this season by the score of 13-0. On August 19th Volleyball began. The final Varsity regular season record was 2-11. The Junior Varsity record was 1-12. Because the Volleyball team lost all of their starting Varsity lineup to graduation, the team had to really work hard to fill those places. Through their season the team showed tremendous improvement. At the end of the regular season the Volleyball Dogs went into the districts ranked 5th. They won against the Monroe City Panthers (ranked 4th) and lost against the No. 1 ranked Mark Twain Tigers, the Dogs came out of the districts 1-2. The Dogs had a season full of very close games and some bad losses, but everyone learned to work as a team and gained great experience in the game of volleyball. Some of the high points of their season was getting third place at the Monroe City Tournament. They had a much better season than their record indicated. They played teams that were usually much bigger than they were, but by no means were they intimidated by their opponents. Although they won no state championship they showed class and skill each game, showing opponents they were a team to be reckoned with. In years to come Louisiana should have a successful basketball program. 87 FRESHMEN AND JUNIOR VARSITY rrr'VfV TEAM PICTURE: left to right: (front) Robert Kennedy, Jerry Shelton, Jerry Reed, Donnie Griffith, Grant Pitzer. The Junior Varsity and Freshmen teams were combined this year to give the freshmen playing experience, while a few members of the Junior Varsity also played on the Varsity. The Freshmen played only 3 games, and lost all of them, but they got alot of experience on the Junior Varsity which won 3 games and lost 8. The Junior Varsity should move up to Varsity and be successful while the Freshmen should move up to the Junior Varsity Varsity and use the experience they gained as Freshmen next season. The team this year was made up of 1 freshman, 5 sophomores, 3 juniors and no seniors whatsoever. Despite the young team they show promise in the years to come. Their biggest accomplishment was taking third place in the Bowling Green Tournament. They showed great improvement each game, by getting the basics down pat. They should come back next season and be a dominating force. The Junior Varsity went 3-3 this year. They helped out with the Varsity team by participating in every game. Even though these girls were forced into varsity positions without any experience they learned very fast and coped with the pressure of fast paced games against other experienced players. The varsity girls’ track team had a very successful season. The team is very young and it has many talented underclassmen that should be very competitive in years to come for Louisiana. Though the team was rather small they still managed to pull together and score some points at the big invita-tionals. Some of their accomplishments include placing third at the conference meet and placing first at the district meet at Cunningham Field. Though the team did not do as well as coach Dennis Griffith had hoped, he along with everyone else knows how competitive the girls’ are going to be in the next couple of year. Lets Hope!! Despite this the team had excellent performances from underclassmen and upperclassmen alike. The competition in the ranks of the Bulldogs for varsity positions was very intense. The competition for JV positions was also very intense. The Bulldogs again had no problem establishing themselves as a state caliber team.
