Text from Pages 1 - 152 of the 1985 volume:

3321 W. GEORGIA ST. LOUISIANA, MISSOURI 2 3 September, 1984, rolled around turning the opening of school again into reality. The beloved summer vacation came to an end and once again school started. The wide-eyed freshmen walked in excited but just as scared. Not knowing exactly what to expect, they all found it wasn't all like they had envisioned. The sophomores returned very relieved they were no longer freshmen, and soon fell into the flow of the school year, surprised to find that forgotten lunch was still in their locker. The juniors entered the building feeling that surge of seniority that only upperclassmen are allowed the priviledge of, only after parking their cars in the newly found student parking lot. Then the seniors arrived!!!!! Strolling down the halls causing the hearts of all the freshmen to skip a beat, they already began counting the days until graduation. Yes, school had started once again and soon good ol' homework was upon us. Old friends were found and all the summer gossip was passed on along the ranks. For some students 1985 was a year spent in search of one's true self. At right Kristin Deeg and Tracy Rittenbaum are still searching. Whether you spent your time playing, working, or just watching time pass by; 1985 was a year of great accomplish ments and memories. For other students these accomplish ments were life long and everlasting. At right Rita Davis and Philiph Stevens were married June 15, 1984. Robin Dunard attempts to guide the students to some unknown pleasure. Say Robin, there's a plant attacking your hair. The cheerleaders and football players build a pyramid. At LHS, pep assemblies are looked forward to in many different ways. For some students, pep assemblies give them a chance to scream and yell without getting into trouble. For others, pep assemblies are a way to get out of class. For what ever reason, it is plain to see that pep assemblies are enjoyed by everyone. This past year, the school spirit was at an all time high. During Homecoming week the gym walls were covered with posters. The pom pon girls performed exciting dances and the cheerleaders demonstrated breathtaking pyramids. Even the football guys tried to get in on a little action. Seniors take 1st place in the Homecoming decorations. They are also convinced they're number 1. 1984-85 Varsity cheerleading squad; front-Tami Garrett, Second row-Susan Robbins, Shelly Brown, Susan Werbach, Bronwyn Jamison, Marta Myers, Deanna Garrett, Julie Schamback and Margaret Fry. If you were to poll the students at LHS as to what their favorite class was, the majority of them would reply — LUNCH. Whether it is the food or atmosphere that attracts the students, lunchtime is the most productive time of the day. Some students choose to brown-bag it while others eat hot lunches. A lot of students and teachers think hot lunches are great. From the faces of these two students, I'd say mark one up for the brown bags. Robert Anderson gets a bite on his lunch as he looks for a place to sit. Below students discuss events of the day. Most popular ... Stacy Brown and Steve Holland Most intelligent . . . Things are so different from junior high. The bells are quieter, the classes are harder, the teachers are more strict, the lockers are smaller, and the lunchroom is connected to the building. The excitement of high school is so very hard to grasp. There is always something new going on; football games, pep assemblies, dances, parties, and if that is not exciting enough there are bomb threats and hazing. It is so hard to go from the highest, a mighty eighth grader, to the lowest, a jolly green freshmen. A person seems so small when they're a freshmen and the upperclassmen seem so big. Sometimes it feels like we will be freshmen for the rest of our lives, the underdog forever. Soon we will be seniors and our freshmen year will seem like yesterday. 36 Asra Abbasi Robert Anderson Jerry Bogle Elizabeth Boots Kevin Bowser Nichelle Bryant John Burleson Lance Calvin Kent Chatman William Colbert Angela Cox Joy Crowder Melinda Crowder Russell Darnell Kitty Davis Mike Davis Karin Deeg Carmen Dunard Andy Evec 37 Angela Hathaway John Henry Susan Henry Stephanie Herndon Shannon Hobson Jeff Howard Heidi Hunter Viki Jakulski John Lindsay Ronny Loveless Kim Meyers Shonda Minor Dolores Moore Bryon Moyer Astrid Munck Gerri McBee Darrell Norris Matthew Oliver Tracy Pennington Cindy Perkins Carenza Pitzer Jim Pruitt Scott Purisiful Rachel Reed ! VOCATIONAL AGRICULTURE The Vocational Agriculture department of LHS offers several different classes to the students. Animal Science is a course in basic instruction in agricultural mechanics, leadership, agricultural careers, livestock selection, animal breeding, nutrition, and supervised occupational experience. Plant Science is a course designed for students with an agricultural background, and covers instruction in agricultural mechanics, leadership, agricultural careers, basic soils, crop production, field crop judging, and supervized occupational experience. Ornamental Horticulture includes a general and basic knowledge in landscape and greenhouse management. Small Gas Engines includes the study of the basic parts, systems, functions and principles of small gas engines. Agricultural Mechanics deals with oxy-acetylene and arc welding skills development. Agricultural Business I and II provide a study in agricultural supplies, products, salesmanship types and management of businesses and general legal information. Below Mr. Kleinlein instructs Kent Chatman on the proper way to hold a pen. BUSINESS EDUCATION There were several Business Education classes offered at Louisiana High School this year. Typing is a course in which students learn the typewriter keyboard by touch, the typewriter machine parts, typing principles, and typing production work such as manuscript-style typing, business and personal business letters, report-style typing centering, tabulating, use of carbon, proofreading, erasing and other typing problems. Accounting 1 teaches the fundamentals and principles of the double-entry system of accounting from personal, organizational, to business record-keeping with emphasis on business accounting. Accounting II is an advanced accounting course designed primarily for students with a determined interest and career objective in the accounting profession. Office and Secretarial Practice are combined as a two hour block course to train students for available entry-level clerical office jobs. It integrates typing to develop occupational competency for an entry-level secretarial position as well. The student learns the operation of office and stenographic machines and gains on-the-job training. Miss Davis taught two classes of English I this past year at LHS. Pictured below is Mrs. Gay who taught Algebra I, Functional Math, and Geometry. Here is a close-up of Mr. Hunter, hopefully in a good mood! Shown below is Coach Griffith, caught in a moment of intense thought. LANGUAGE ARTS The Language Arts department of Louisiana High School offers students a choice of taking general or college preparaory English classes. General classes give practice in using skills acquired from previous grades; and special attention is given to writing, reading, and listening. These classes are designed to assure that the student has a working knowledge of the areas of spelling, grammar, and writing techniques, and in the reading and understanding of various literary types as well as emphasizing sentence and paragraph structure leading to writing essays and a library paper. These classes are offered to underclassmen, while juniors and seniors are offered classes about American literature from the time of the first colony to modern times and a study of writing devices as well as English literature from the Anglo-Saxon ear through the Twentieth Century. Also offered by the Language Arts department are the classes of Speech Drama, which are designed to acquaint the student with the basic fundamentals of public speaking and instruction in interpretation of various dramatic works, and Communications which introduces the concepts and skills of a good journalist. The students of this class are responsible for writing, editing, typing, layout, and photography for both the school paper; The Highlights, and the Alamo. HOME ECONOMICS The Home Economics department of LHS offers several different classes. Clothing I and II provide information on latest styles and how fabrics are made and the fibers they are made of. Various sewing techniques are covered also, as well as dealing with specialty fabrics and more detailed techniques. Family Meals begins with a study of nutrition and its importance for the body. This information is then used for preparing daily menus. Cooking terminology and safety in the kitchen are also reviewed. World Foods provides practical experience in producing balanced meals for the young, elderly and any person with a specific diet. But the majority of the class is devoted to exploring the eating habits of foreign countries. Independent Living provides practical information for students who will soon be on their own, whether in college, a trade school, or employed in the community. Consumer Education helps the student to understand our economy and specifically how it affects him each day. All of the classes mentioned are offered for the semester only. Pictured above is Mrs. Giltner who taught English I B, Speech Drama, English IV A, and English IV B this year. What evil force is behind this mischevious look from Mrs. Keithley? No doubt the cause has something to do with a quiz she is plotting for unsuspecting students. % Below Coach Gschwender demonstrates how to properly support a wall. Mrs. Green, pictured below, was the Librarian for this school year, 1984-1985. Pictured below is Mr. Griffith. He taught World History, Psychology, and American History this year. Mrs. Griffith taught English III A, Communications, English II A, and English III B. FOREIGN LANGUAGE Foreign Language classes are offered for two year intervals. Spanish I and II are designed to introduce and use the mechanics of the Spanish language and to learn and use a working fundamental vocabulary. Experience is given in hearing, speaking, reading, and writing the language. French 1 and II are designed to introduce students to the language, culture, geography, and literature of France with the first year emphasis being placed on vocabulary and grammar, and the second year, literature through poetry study and memorization and the reading of condensed novels is emphasized. Pictured to the lef is Mrs. Gay, passing on some of the infinite wisdom she, as a teacher. Mrs. Giltner addressing a class of interested students. MATHEMATICS Several different mathematics classes are offered by Louisiana High School. Functional Math covers the basic skills of arithmetic and the use of these skills in solving problems found in day-to-day living. Algebra I is an introduction to abstract mathematics. Numbers are represented with letters, and the laws of arithmetic are expanded to include operations with these letters. The students also learn to generalize their knowledge of real numbers. Geometry is the study of shapes and forms, the rela-ionship between them, and the proof of these relationships. Algebra II is a review and continuation of Algebra I. It provides more sophisticated algebraic equations for studying and solving more difficult problems. Calculus provides an overview of trigonometry, the theory of limits, introduction to analytic geometry, and differential and integral calculus. Consumer Math is a study of transportation, insurance, income, taxes, investments, credit, banking, housing, and other areas of consumer interest. Introduction To Computers is designed to introduce the student to computers and how to program a microcomputer. 49 MUSIC The Music department at LHS offers two kinds of classes. Band is designed to teach the student to enjoy instrumental musical experiance, and it develops, in certain instances, a more specialized performer. Through public performance it installs in all students self-discipline and responsibility. Vocal Music is a course designed to develop the voice with emphasis on the fundamentals of good singing both individually and within a group. The student will be taught to sightread and will be exposed to good legitimate choral literature. Mrs. Henry taught Secretarial Practice, Office Practice, English II B, and English II A this year. Mrs. Logan pauses long enough to give a look of sincerity to our photographer. Below, Mr. Mahabir sits back, relaxes, and takes one of those well deserved breaks. Pictured above is Mrs. Gay obviously distributing bai new to one student, John Griffen. Mr. Hunter taught Biology, Physical Science, Physics, and Chemistry this past year at LHS. INDUSTRIAL ARTS Mrs. Keithley taught Consumer Math, French II, Algebra II, French I, and Calculus this year. Pictured above. Miss Cole instructs one of her many Spanish classes. Below is Mr. Kleinlein, who taught one hour of Functional Math this past year at Louisiana High School. There are many Industrial Arts classes offered at LHS this year. General Industrial Arts is a course in exploratory, instructional shop work that offers the student learning experiences in understanding the industrial and technical aspects of life today. Industrial Crafts involves wood, concrete, electricity, metal, and general building materials. General Wood Construction includes woods, hand tools, machine methods, construction and finishing, and other elements of woodworking trades. General Metals aids the beginning metal worker in the development of knowledge and understanding of the basic tools and processes of metal work used in industry. General Drafting is a study of engineering and other technical or machanical vacations where the skills of actual drawing practices are needed. Mrs. Shaw stands guard on one of her sewing ma chines, while Rita Stephens flashes a rather larg smile. Mr. Larson taught American History, Civics, and Geography Economics this year at LHS. Life Science shows how science is a part of everyday life and helps develop one's ability to work with others. Intermediate Science is a general science study of everything from elementary chemistry to life science. Physical Science is geared to the freshmen students with a mathematics background, who plans to attend college, or who intends to take up further study in the field of science. Biology is a study of the Protista Kingdom, Plant Kingdom and Animal Kingdom with dissections of clams, starfish, fetal pig and a shark's head. Chemistry has a main objective to develop the fundamentals of chemistry so that the student will pass college or technical school chemistry. It is geared to mathematic backgrounded students, either junior or seniors. Physics is a study of mechanics, light, heat, sound, and electricity. Experiments are performed to confirm or predict the general laws of physics. Pictured to the left. Miss Davis grades one of her many freshmen English papers. Below, Garrett Boyd works at the bulletin board in Mrs. St. Pierre's room. 52 SOCIAL STUDIES Several classes in the Social Studies department are offered at Louisiana High School. Civics teaches the operation of our government at all levels and the constitution of the state of Missouri. World History enlarges the student's understanding of the world of today and tomorrow by an understanding of the past. One key point emphasized is that the themes of history repeat themselves. American History is designed to acquaint the student with a political, social and economic history of the United States. The U.S. constitution is covered and a test must be passed. Geography acquaints students with other parts of the world. The land forms, people, customs, and importance of the areas studied will be stressed in regard to the present and future of these areas. Psychology students study perception and learning, growth and development, emotion and motivation, personality, and abnormal and social behavior. Economics teaches students basic principles of economics, makes concepts understandable, shows students the role of economics in society, gives students important economic skills with insights into current economic trends and issues. Geography, Psychology and Economics are offered as semester classes. Mr. Mahabir taught Small Gas Engines Ag. Mechanics, Plant Science, Ornamental Horticulture, Animal Science, and Ag. Business I Ag. The program consists of games of low organization, lifetime activities, and team sports. Special Needs courses are designed to help prepare students for life outside of school. The classes consist of students with behavior disorders. Art 1 and II are classes designed to give students the opportunity to work with, and obtain a certain degree of proficiency with various art media. Each student will obtain a certain fundamental understanding of art terminology and current and past art styles. The school year 1984-1985 was filled with both good times and bad times and thanks to the teachers there were mostly good times. Tears fill our eyes Because it's all gone, We're starting a new life. We have to move on. We hope friends will keep in touch As the years pass us by, Although it hurts inside We'll try not to cry. We think of kindergarten And our first day, Now we've reached the end We are going away. How do you say good-by To friends who mean so much? Will there be time To sincerely keep in touch? You'll always have the memories Of your school years from day one. Don't think of school as ending-Think a new life has begun. Cindy Kichline, 17, Eston, Pa.
