The school year of 1981-82 started out; like most school years do. The first day, the new freshman walked in the doors, uncertain and unsure, and not really knowing exactly what to expect. They had visions of being suspended from the rooftops, “buttoned” until their knees fell off, and pushing pennies until their noses became the same color as that famous reindeer we all hear about at Christmas time. The sophomores wandered back in, checking to see if their lockers were still here, adding new graffiti to the walls, and learning to play the role of the “forgotten class”. The juniors strutted in the doors, caught up in the glory of at last being upperclassman. To show their superiority,! they glared at the freshman, jeered at the sophomores, and; set a new record for the highest number of dented cars in the parking lot. Then a hush fell over the halls. Shadows darkened the doors. The seniors had arrived. Almost ; immediately, Mr. Giltner was on the PA, welcoming us back and telling us once again, those most famous words, to start out the new school year, to think and to be positive. You could almost see the eager glint in some eyes, hatching up some awful atrocity to play on some unsuspecting victim. There were new people to meet, and old friends to catch up on all the summer’s gossip. There were age-old feuds to be fired up again, and NEW-TRENDS to be started for the new year. Yes, the school was the same, the people were almost the same, but the year itself would definitely be unique! 20
