1982 Alamo 1 Louisiana High School Louisiana, Mo. Cruising Through ’82 We chose the title and theme of our yearbook, “Cruising Through ’82” for a number of reasons. First, “cruising” is a popular pastime, which to the uninitiated means to drive slowly up and down the streets, especially Georgia Street carefully observing what is happening, and hoping to meet interesting people, or just to see our old friends. Next, cruising through this year is what a lot of people have done, especially those afflicted with “senioritis.” But cruising through the year doesn’t mean we haven’t met any obstacles in our path. Just as there are potholes in the road, there are traps we can fall into in our lives. Just as we must pay attention to road signs along the way, we must observe signals that point our way through life. And just as we must be alert and on the watch for possible dangers on the road, we must be equally alert passing our way through life. In cruising through 1982, we hope that we have done our best to make our way skillfully and carefully through this year of school, and have some fun doing it. 2 Table of Contents Subjects page: People 11 Academics 19 Sports 28 Homecoming 36 Courtwarming 44 Memories 49 Organizations 58 Undergrads 65 Freshmen 66 Sophomores 71 Juniors 76 Seniors 81 Graduation 100 Advertisements 110 3 4 Beth Motley holds a cup, while Gail Stout kisses Mrs. Ragan. Before he came here, he was a social studies teacher. After that, he was the Middle School principal. Mr. Giltner was the person who brought the Jr. High School to Louisiana. He has been with the La. school system for 23 years. Mr. Giltner is very excited about his new job. He will be in charge of transportation, buildings, and grounds as assistant superintendent. He will miss the students and faculty here very much, and we will miss him, too. 12 Melody DeWeese, Secretary Julie Strode, Secretary Lib. Asst. The first day, the new freshman walked in the doors, uncertain and unsure, and not really knowing exactly what to expect. They had visions of being suspended from the rooftops, “buttoned” until their knees fell off, and pushing pennies until their noses became the same color as that famous reindeer we all hear about at Christmas time. The sophomores wandered back in, checking to see if their lockers were still here, adding new graffiti to the walls, and learning to play the role of the “forgotten class”. The juniors strutted in the doors, caught up in the glory of at last being upperclassman. To show their superiority,! they glared at the freshman, jeered at the sophomores, and; set a new record for the highest number of dented cars in the parking lot. Then a hush fell over the halls. Shadows darkened the doors. The seniors had arrived. Almost ; immediately, Mr. Giltner was on the PA, welcoming us back and telling us once again, those most famous words, to start out the new school year, to think and to be positive. You could almost see the eager glint in some eyes, hatching up some awful atrocity to play on some unsuspecting victim. There were new people to meet, and old friends to catch up on all the summer’s gossip. There were age-old feuds to be fired up again, and NEW-TRENDS to be started for the new year. Yes, the school was the same, the people were almost the same, but the year itself would definitely be unique! 20 21 22 £Z The School year of 81-82 was a vintage year In many respects. We opened up our year with a fantastic football season, advancing into post-season play. Homecoming was great, with Brenda Traynor reigning as the ’81 Homecoming Queen. LHS rocked through the fall months with the help of Freedom Jam, a band invited to LHS by the Student Council. Winter arrived, bringing with it that great mid-term break. Snow Daysl LHS students were treated to almost two weeks of extra Christmas vacation. The rest of our year was spent frantically trying to make up for those carefree, happy days, spent wallowing in snow drifts and skating on Hercules pond. Dog Pack was resurrected to inspire spirit at basketball games, and they came up with some truly unique ways of demoralizing the enemy and getting the oP LHS spirit going. Take the game where some two dozen Dog Pack members. Innocent spectators, and Pep Club members stood up and read the Louisiana Press Journal whilst the opposing team was introduced. Who says pep and spirit are dead at LHS? Not Pep Club and Dog Pack. Spring came to LHS, and upperclassmen were puzzled. Something was definitely wrong at LHS this spring. But what was it? What was wrong? Then the horrible truth dawned upon us. There were too many dandelions growing in the lawn of our beloved high school. Worse yet, there were no freshmen to pick them. Ah, yes, those cursed little freshmen. They eluded even our most villainous efforts. Everything was against us. Third quarter brought the usual, hopeless look in the eyes of students and faculty. Would we ever get out? As far back as February, students began buying pocket calendars and feverishly marking off the days, counting the hours, minutes, and seconds ’til summer vacation began. March creeped up, bringing track season and semi-warm weather. The Juniors, thinking of the approaching Prom, devised hundreds of money-making projects to strip the unsuspecting public of much needed money. April came and the end of the tunnel was visible. Students and faculty perked up with only two more months to go. Seniors drifted up and down the halls, visions of caps, gowns, and graduation spinning in their minds. The eighth graders (or “future freshmen”), here to check out their “future school”, creeped about trying to avoid the hungry looks cast upon them by eager sophomores and juniors. May finally arrived, with the usual softball games in the front lawn, and an abundant crop of frisbees zooming about the quadrangle. The 28th crept nearer. The seniors began to wonder where all the years had gone. The juniors began to wonder what it was really like to be a Senior. The sophomores looked forward to being upperclassmen. The freshmen just looked forward. Last but not least, the eighth graders looked nervously forward to becoming high school students. The school year of 1981-82 had come and gone, leaving a trail of memories and experiences behind it. The class of ’82 moves on to new places and new experiences. Yes, definitely a vintage year. 24 25 Editors Page The editors of the 1981-82 LHS ALAMO would like to thank all those people who helped with the putting together and publishing of our yearbook. It was a long, hard process, but in the end, thanks to the efforts of some very hard working staffers and sponsor, the book got itself put together. A special thanks to Mr. Giltner, who worked very hard to get us going and supported us all through the year, and especially to Jacie Ragan, our sponsor, who was as new to yearbook publishing as her staff. She was the motivating force behind us through the year and through the summer. We got a lot of help from Walsworth Publishing, our company which sent representatives to answer questions and solve problems. Campus Photo provided us with a new camera and came to every event we had to get pictures and send them to us. A very special “thank-you” to Lynn Rhoades, our Walsworth rep., who was in a very serious car accident early in the spring. Lynn was great at answering our million-odd questions and made sure we knew what we were doing. We also want to thank Kelly Henderson and Porter Elliott for their help and support during sales week, when nobody knew if there would be an ALAMO or not. The biggest thanks go to the businesses who printed ads in our book and gave us the money to get started in the first place, and of course to the students and parents (and whoever else) bought a ’82 edition of the ALAMO. Without the support given us throughout the year by friends and faculty and others, there wouldn t be an ALAMO. Thank You, and good luck to the future editors of the LHS ALAMO. 27 Sports In this fast action shot we see number 41; Ovalta Bell, 25; Brent Gierny, 60: Paul Tray-nor, 23: Mark Elgin, 66: Mike Geery, 85: Dale Dewey, and 40: Randy Tredway. It wasn't the float, so it had to be prom. A few students worked very hard to give the seniors a good prom, which they deserved. The evening started with a ‘pig roast” at 5:30, and then the dance from 9:00 to 12:00. When you’re given a week to turn the gym into a fantasy place, you can only do so much. Believe it or not the juniors did quite alot, even Don Giltner, principal, was surprised at the job done. That was the biggest part of being a Junior. This past year the Juniors did a lot, or shall we say tried a lot. It started out, when we tried to put a float together for the third year, and of course kept our undefeatable record for the third year, LAST. But you must admit we had the biggest mouths, as you can tell by the winning of the spirit flag, except for when we were cheated out of it. Then came time for Prom, what a task. But through our hard efforts of selling anything we could get our hands on, we finally started building - and pulled it off with the help of a few students. So all in all we ended up on a good note, and as the song says, “WE’VE ONLY JUST BEGUN.’’ Watch out world, because the class of “83“ is movin up - that’s the only way we can go. But for all seniors it was the best. The classes seemed easier and even some of the teachers seemed to take it a little easier on us. There were some bad times, but the good times far outshined all of those. Everyone was on good terms with everyone else, and all quarrels and feuds were forgotten. Homecoming was a total success, with the seniors taking first prize in all of the events. Ordering announcements and taking measur-ments for caps and gowns made graduation seem not so very far away. The arrival of the coveted gowns made us realize how little time we still had as LHS students. We began to look back and remember all the good times we'd had at LHS and think maybe it wasn't all that bad, after all. All of those cold football games and awful concession stands weren’t as bad as they had seemed. All in all it was a great four years, and there will never be another four like them. Nor will there ever be a class like the class of '82. 84 85 86 Mark Eugene Elgin Alesia Dove Elliott Brenda Kay Elliott Ralph Porter Elliott, Jr. Wanda Leona Willeyne Elliott Brent Alan Gierke Pamela Sue Gillis Darin Robert Hart Robert Lloyd Griggs Joseph Eugene Henderson, Jr. John Lee Grover Kelly Glenn Henderson Lesley Ann Horton Lisa Lynn Hughlett David Robert Hunter Jerri Dawn Ince Laura Denise Ann James Mark Lee Jones Lloyd Grant Kemry, Jr. Christine Ann King Nicole Suzanne Kuntzi Mark Allen Lancaster Michael Dwayne McDaniel Patrick Howard Major 87 88 89 90 Lisa Lynn Calvin Mannahan Linda Lee Minor Kymberly Lynn Phillips Stephen Eric Reed James Ray Meyers Terry Dale Minor Paula Maria Powell Tammi Ann Ries Mary Jean Minihan Susan Belle Patrick Roger Alan Pursifull Sheila Ann Salmons Gisela Tolentina Sanchez Kenneth Richard Sencenbaugh John David Sisson Toney Lee Smith Virgil Eugene Sapp Rhonda Lee Shellhorse Sherry Lea Sitton Christopher Dale Stark Dean William Schlueter Charles Edward Sidwell Kenneth Ray Smith Susan Beth Stephens 91 92 The year of 1981-1982 was a year of fads and strange trends. Seniors were among the many to fall victim of such predators as the Rubik's cube, the “Preppie” look. Taking Off to the Great White North, and numerous other crazy but strangely appealing crazes. It was a year of friendship and growing up, and of taking all-important steps toward adulthood. Things were changing and becoming different. 1982 was a year of turnabout for the entire nation, and for us, too. The school seemed smaller, maybe because we've grown during our four years here. The pastimes of the average high school student, those of cruising, jamming, and all-around partying were taking a back seat (in some cases) to thinking about the future, and reaching toward our goals. The underclassmen seemed even younger than before, or maybe we just felt that we were getting older. 1982 was a vintage year for all the students of LHS, but it was a very special time for the graduating class. It was a year for originality, and we showed that we have our own special kind. Yes, the class of '82 has something, all right. It's called style. 93 94 Jamie Dee Stoops Craig David Summers Brenda Lee-Ann Traynor Laura Anne-Lee Vickrey Mark Eugene Struttman Ronnie Lee Taylor Rusty Wayne Tredway Robert Lewis Waggoner Julia Marie Stuerman Jennifer Jo Todd Thomas Martin Turley Elizabeth Marie Walden Dina Suzette Neisen Wallace Douglas Mansfield Wallace Karon Lynn Weber Glenn Ervin Wharton Ryan Tracy White Paul Peter Wilczewski Robin Dee Windmiller Mrs. Jane Henry Sponsor Deborah Lynn Wood Mr. Mitch Mahabir Sponsor Mr. Edward Blais Sponsor 95 Senior Activities Jamie Elaine Akers: FFA, 2 yrs.
