The football section is dedicated to Coach Les Viehmann, in appreciation for the seven years he coached and taught at Louisiana High School. Coach Viehmann resigned after the spectacular 1977 football season. VARSITY FOOTBALL TEAM Above, front: P. Eastman, C. Loesing, W. Ludwig, K. Ward, G. Gordon, B. Gordon, M. Shade, D. Sutton, D. Never satisfied, they kept making touchdowns until they reached the state playoffs where they missed the State 2A Championship title by a few meager points. Our school is honored to have these great athletes. We leave this fine record to the future Bulldogs, may they keep alive the winning spirit. ALL-STATE FOOTBALL PLAYERS: The Ultimate It's dark except for the floodlights shining on the field. The parking lot is full. The bleachers are packed. A roar of voices rises from the stands as maroon and white figures charge onto the field. The loudspeakers blare. Then ... the kickoff. The action begins. First down and the crowd cheers. Struggles at the 50 yard-line, at the 30 yard-line. A combined effort brings a touchdown. Half-time. The players get a rest. The coach gives a pep talk, plans strategy, commands plays. Spectators flock to the refreshment stand. The band weaves it's way across the field and marches into a giant formation of LHS. The players are back on the field. Struggles and touchdowns later, the Bulldogs celebrate a victory. 1977 was a season to remember. The great accomplishments , trophies, new badges for letter-jackets , and the exhilaration of being winners helped make it unforgettable. The team had special talent with a strong desire to win. The fans were instilled with a strong sense of unity and pride. On the day of the final play-offs, excitement reigned at LHS. The whole building echoed with 11 Go Big Red11 and spirit contests. And the football guys ? Well, they yelled the loudest. Were they nervous about the upcoming game ? If they were, they did not show it. Lettermen SENIORS 65- M. Rubemeyer 80-G. Gordon 34-T. She has sponsored four classes from freshman to graduation. During 1977-78, she sponsored NHS. Mrs. Griffith said that she plans to work as a substitute teacher because she would miss the contact with the students and the exchange of ideas. She said that knowledge of the subject matter, understanding , and patience are important qualities of a good teacher. It is to advise students of their responsibility to keep their school a respectable and admirable educational environment. Student Council also raises money for the betterment of the school. This year the council welcomed new students and freshmen and served as guides around the school. They gave their efforts during Homecoming Week by judging themes, helping with the parade and by sponsoring the coronation and dance. At Christmas they decorated a tree outside and one in the cafeteria . They held small paper drives, laboriously collecting old papers and IBM cards to sell for recycling. Each month the council prepared the calendar of events and reported to home rooms after meetings. They sold candy before and after school. The council helped finance AFS student, Peter Darroch, from New Zealand. They also sponsored singing valentines and the turkey-of Ore-month contest (with Mr. Hunter the obvious winner.) They installed a soda machine and added to the stage curtain fund. Finally, the council sent members to state and conference meetings. They got permission for outside lunch, started a smoke patrol and installed smoke alarms in the restrooms, in response to student requests. Members of Student Council were: Rodney Todd, president Kim Salmons, vice-president Connie Dillender, secretary-treasurer Kevin Hampton, AFS representative Peter Darroch, AFS student Tom Wallace, AFS brother Mary Beth Eipper, Senior Class president Teresa Wilson, Senior Class representative Linda Robinson, Senior Class representative Rasheda Hodges, Senior Class representative Doug Waltman, Junior Class president Scott Traynor, Junior Class representative Marsha Powell, Junior Class representative Babette Munson, Junior Class representative Todd Geeson, Sophomore Class president Lynette Maxwell, Sophomore Class representative Debra Gordon, Sophomore Class representative David Campbell, Sophomore Class representative Dana Hope, Freshman Class president Kathy Carlton, Freshman Class representative Billy Wallace, Freshman Class representative 50 National Honor Society is based on leadership, citizenship, service and scholarship. It requires hours of technical work, frustration, despair, and an occassional triumph. The staff consists of a group of volunteers who spend their spare time working on layouts, taking pictures, writing copy, and selling adds. Their dedication and enthusiasm helped to make Alamo the success that it is. A special thanks to the Highlights class and to Elizabeth Behringer, Anita Henry, Lori Jameson and Melanie Greer for special assistance. 52 ' ALAMO HIGHLIGHTS Responsible for producing the school newspaper are: front, T. Waddell, reporter, L. Bernhardt, managing editor; second row, T. Ince, photographer, A. Smith, W. Parsons, L. Umfleet, reporters; back, L. Robbins, darkroom manager, C. Sitton, editor, E. Seran-dos, S. Henderson, J. Penrod, reporters, M. Stewart, asst, editor, S. Franklin, S. Wilson, S. Travis, K. Page, C. Sterne, reporters. The reporter's job begins with an assignment from the editor, followed by a series of struggles to obtain information. The staff is faced with interviewing reluctant and sometimes angry informants, waiting (and waiting) for faculty members to disclose facts, meeting deadlines and even taking on an assignment at the last minute. They encounter resentment, attempted censorship and technical problems. The 1977-78 class set a precedent by being the first Highlights class to prepare page layouts and write headlines. The editors fought an unceasing battle to adhere to journalistic rales and produce a paper of quality. 53 Language Club Language Club is made up of students who are interested in other countries and foreign languages. The only requirement for membership is to be in a Spanish or French class. At the meetings, speakers tell about a country they visited or lived in. This year, the speakers and the countries they talked about were: D. Whipple, Germany; P. Rubemeyer, France; P. Darroch, New Zealand; and Mr. McKiddy, Egypt. This year's officers were: M. Bronson, president; N. Cadwallader, Spanish vice president; K. Fry, French vice president; D. Whipple, secretary; and N. Crowder, treasurer. This year's members are: first row, L. Robinson, P. American Field Service Peter Darroch, from New Zealand, lived with the Wallaces. His classes were English IV (CP), speech, American history, accounting, world history, biology, and study hall. He participated in Student Council and Pep Club. Peter said he applied for an AFS scholarship because he wanted to experience a different lifestyle. However, American and New Zealand cultures are so similar, that there wasn't much of a culture shock.1' Being an AFS student is meeting, people, making friends, studying, and leaving a part of yourself in the minds of those you knew. Future Homemakers Of America The FHA motto; 1 'Toward New Horizons'', expresses the purpose of the organization and the emblem symbolizes that American homes of the future are in the hands of its youth. The main goal of FHA is learning to live better today in order that homemaking may be better tomorrow. Members pictured below are: C. Woods, Mrs. Wool-folk, R. Claypole, F. Chapuis, N. Pom Pon Girls BAND and MUSIC 64 MARCHING BAND Each day the marching band members headed out to the football field to practice for the half-time shows. Many times the weather was cold, actually making it painful to play the instruments. Other times the band had to literally wade through puddles and mud to practice, (still marching in step! ) Many bands in this area simply played a concert, but the LHS band presented a new visually interesting show each time. The precision drills were time consuming and required great amounts of patience and coordination on the part of both band members and instructor. On the days that weather made it impossible to go outside, Mr. Christy insisted that the band learn more music that would be used at later dates. Not a minute was spared for the thought of relaxation. The members enjoyed getting on to the streets to practice for the Homecoming parade. For one week there was no mud ... just hard concrete ! Band members walked to second period feeling tired, wind blown, sometimes wet and muddy, sometimes hot and sticky, but more than that, feeling like they had done something that not everyone can do! After long weeks of hard practice they looked forward to performing for the public. LHS Band In Concert T cr. CONCERT BAND: PICCOLO, J. Marsh; FLUTES, J. Law, E. Behringer, M. Cox, K. Giltner, S. With band tests over, concert band started to unfold its talents. Band started school the same way every day. Instruments were put together, tuned, and then began 45 minutes of practicing the music to near perfection. And there were contests for individuals to enter; all - conference, all-district, and all-state bands, (details on page 68) Then concert band performed its magical music to an awestricken audience of parents and other supporters at the winter concert. More practicing followed for contest in Mexico. It was Nervewracking because the band had a record of about 14 one-ratings in their past. Ensembles and soloists were also selected, with rehersals weekly before or after school. Contest was a disappointment. No matter how hard the band practiced and no matter how good they performed , their two pieces (not to mention the sight reading) received a 2+ rating , marring the school re -cord. When spring concert music was given out, there were groans heard among the band students. They were soon hushed though, as the musicians began to look over the music and got down to business again. Finally the night came when they were on stage again, ready to perform. There were murmurs heard from the audience until the lights dimmed. A strange hush, and then total silence, and the band was again a success! After intermission, the ensembles and soloists played their pieces. The next day in band the musicians wondered what they would do until the end of the semester. The answer? Practice ... for Baccalaureate and Commencement. Practice only ended when Baccalaureate and Commencement were over. It was over ... at least until summer band started. 67 ENSEMBLES and SOLOISTS: front, E. Onik, J. Marsh, J. Law, L. Robinson, M. But for students who wanted to expand their talent, vocal music was a challenge. At the beginning of the school year there were tryouts held for ' 'Fiddler'' and for Conference and Chamber Choir. After the musical was over the group began preparing for a Christmas concert. After Christmas there were small groups picked to sing for spring concert as well as for district ratings at Mexico. There were volunteers for solos. The music classes then practiced two selections as a mixed choir and two pieces each as boys and girls choir. These three groups sang both at Mexico and the spring concert. After the big trip to Mexico (and lost robes, sad and happy faces), practice began for Baccalaureate. Seniors in choir began practicing for Commencement. The year was very busy for the music students who wanted to get involved. There were many things, exciting and new, which happened. They will be remembered and reminisced about long into the future by the students and their teacher, Miss Sajban. tn ■ O ►n r M Tl tn w tn r M tn tn DISflJM S.H HHl DIScm NI Below: Miss Karen Sajban, music teacher, in a typical pose. In the play, a father, Tevye, faces the fact that his five daughters do not value the traditions he has always depended on. 1 'Fiddler'' was the one track of many of the cast's minds for several months. Practice became a hassle, conflicting with homework, clubs and television. Many were quoting lines and doing comical dance steps down the halls of school. Before opening night principal cast members performed excerpts of the show for many clubs to create public interest in the production. As the first big night approached there were deadlines for everything: lines to be memorized, dances and songs learned to perfection, costumes made, sets built and painted. Backstage people changed sets, prompted lines and raised the morale of the actors. Without them the play would have been mass confusion. Make-up was an ordeal, especially to the boys, many of whom had to wear beards. Some actually played football the next day, their still made-up faces confounding the opposing team. Karen Sajban was director, Linda Thomalla, choreographer. Stage managers were Melanie Greer and Kim Salmons. Ketta Fry was props chairman. Mrs. Keithley directed make-up. Principal CAST: TEVYE, K. The Junior Class started the year BROKE but with determination came out ahead. The greatest disappointment was having to enter a vandalized float in the Homecoming parade, and taking fourth place. The time seemed too short when they started working to make the gym into the 11 Pathway to Paradise. By the end of the week of late nights' labor, palm trees abounded beside a waterfall and a path meandered through the wonderland, over a bridge, past grass huts. D. Brown S. Brown B. Buchanan V. DREW ALLAN YAEGER: Art Fair, 1976; Revolutionary Ideas stage crew; Area Vocational School, 2 yrs. I 1 The 1977-78 Senior year was a year that will be long remembered. It was a year for decisions, expanding ideas, and preparing for the future. The year ranged from such endless efforts as the unsuccessful mini float, pictured top left, to the breathtaking first place 1 'Skunk Float'', pictured at the right. Class officers pictured top right were: Mary Beth Eipper, president; William Ludwig, vice-president; Kathie Tallman, secretary; and Alika Oliver, treasurer. The class of 78 was a strong class and they had a successful year. Some activities included the Haunted House, the floats, SENIORS DO IT BETTER T-shirts, and after four years of observing the LHS teachers, finally portrayed them to the T in the first place courtwarming skit. I: I Senior Salute In every life time there lies a dream, a variation of horizons, Which wait patiently to blossom in the future sun, One black, one white, one yellow, one red, Each echoing goals undreamed, And whether they are each played with intensity, They all stand boldly against the blue cushions of tomorrow's sky, Waiting to sing our new harmonies of gold rays. And when joined together, no matter how distant The black and yellow from the White and red, all blend as one, one class, one body, one individual, one people, One variation of life, on every day echoing a dream. byline -Wanda Parsons r 128 i Graduates And Their Many, Many Moods THE SENIOR CLASS OF NINETEEN First row, D.
