Text from Pages 1 - 184 of the 1972 volume:

•V do you sit around on your tail like the proverbial three monkeys who see nothing, hear nothing, or speak___ nothing, or do you strive to be a_ communicating individual in a_____ non-communicative world?__________ alamo 1972_______ louisiana high school louisiana, missouri 2 5 Look around you. Every where you look you see people—people milling about the halls, or spending a moment in quiet comtempla-tion of an exhausting day. The reactions of different people to the same situation differ greatly. Something evoking an approving smile from one person may cause a frown of disapprobation from another. 10 11 A person's smile is the barometer by which his affections may be measured. A laugh, a giggle, a secretive smile, are all indicative of personality, and give more insight into the individual than a hundred thousand words. 12 13 A smile is a form of communication. Communication is the single most important factor in life on earth. Without it, society could not exist. 16 Society is not the division of people into classes and cliques, as some believe. It exists when there is harmony among a group of individuals sharing similar interests. 17 Harmony can only be created through a blend of communication and individualism. Each person carries a different tune, yet there is no discord. 18 21 22 23 homecoming 71 There is one event every year which the students can look forward to with the assurance that it will be ever unchanged. As Homecoming this school year drew near at Louisiana High, most students received a distinct shock: the old, established Homecoming that they had known and loved since they were babes in arms had been changed! Howls of indignation echoed through the halls, and black looks were directed at the Student Council members, who had master-minded the revamping. 24 something special 25 26 The rules were simple: 1. No motorized floats. (But how can we get them down the streets then?) 2. All building materials must cost less than $50. (How cheap!) 3. More than one float may be built. (Ha, ha, think we're stupid or something!) 4. The theme of Homecoming Week will be The Wild, Wild West. (How uncool!) 27 As time wore on, however, the indignant protests ceased, and the all-new Homecoming was accepted with enthusiasm by the student body. A wave of non-traditional-ism swept over LHS, and student council members became, once more, socially acceptable. 28 1972 queen sally naxera Queen Sally had an active year as cheerleading captain, in her fourth year on the squad, and as the female lead in Oklahoma! Among her other credits are state speech contest ( superior rating), vocal music solo (state rating I), DAR Good Citizen award, and a letter in girls' track. 30 Patrick Smith escorting Terri Wood, sophomore attendant; Thomas Ambra escorting Lou Ann Jackson, senior attendant; Quentin Richardson escorting Denise Rollins, senior candidate. 1972 homecoming attendants Barry Jones escorting queen Sally Naxera; Glen Somes escorting Terry Greene, junior attendant; Thomas Pratt escorting Carol Meyer, freshman attendant. everything you always wanted (but were afraid to ask) The aroma of hot food cooking wafted through the halls, as the home economics classes worked to prepare a meal fit to serve to their favorite teachers. Preparations had begun days earlier, and all was in readiness when the guests of honor arrived. In this single relaxed hour, the girls put to use knowledge of how to prepare and serve a dinner that had been months accumulating. 32 Oklahoma: a night to Oklahoma-----the greatest territory ever---- destined for statehood----the pride of the nation! Oklahoma in the year of her birth is the setting for the musical Oklahoma! , presented by the L.H.S. Glee Club during the month of January. Laurey Williams (Sally Naxera) is secretly in love with Curly (Raymond Dryden) a brash young cowboy with bowlegs that couldn't stop a pig in the road , as Aunt Eller (Susan Allison) is fond of saying. The only thing standing in the way of a romance between Laurey and curly is Jud Fry (Phil Griffith). Jud invites Laurey to the box social, and she accepts, against her better judgement. Laurey's friend Ado Annie (Pam Sisson) is also having boy troubles. She is torn between a young marriage-minded cowpoke named Will Parker (Jerry Mefford) and an itinerent Persian peddler, Ali Hakim (Eric Dol-beare). However, Annie's father, Sheriff Andrew Carnes (Bill Jordan), is all for forcing Ali, under shotgun threat, to marry his daughter. Ali, who is proposing everything but marriage, embarks on a full-scale campaign to lose Annie's hand to Will Parker. 35 36 At the box social. Curly sells his saddle, horse, and gun to raise enough money to bid for Laurey's hamper. Jud plots to rid himself of Curly through an accidental stabbing. His attempt on Curly's life is foiled by Ali. At the height of the festivities, Laurey and Curly announce that they are to be married, and Ado Annie decides in favor of Will. 37 Oklahoma: all's w After the wedding of Laurey and Curly, the townsfolk gather to shivaree the couple. Ali Hakim and his new bride Gertie Cummins (Susie Waite) arrive in the territory to offer the happy pair their congratulations, and so does Jud Fry. Full of drink, Jud demands a kiss from Laurey, and when Curly prevents him from taking one, he pulls a knife. As the two fight, Curly throws Jud, and he falls on his own knife and is killed. Federal Marshal Cord Elam (Daryll Wright) is persuaded to try Curly on the spot. After a not guilty verdict, the honey-mooners drive off in a surrey to start life in the brand new state of Oklahoma! 39 Through the 32° below zero weather, the arrows flew towards the target, but somehow most of them ended on the hill. Building fires, sharing sweaters, and puddle jumping were just a few of the many things the girls experienced while learning the techniques of archery. a lesson in keeping warm . . . 41 what makes you tick What makes you tick? What are you involved in? Are you involved at all? Whether it's class activities, sports, organizations, or passing time with friends, involvement is essential. Too often the excuse for fatal apathy is a weakly whispered, I didn't want to get involved. Inside everyone is a driving force, which only needs to be directed into the right channels to produce great things. A realization of where your interests lie could lead to new involvements, and possibly to the answer to the puzzling question, What makes you tick? 42 43 another opening . . 44 TBiHB The monotony of an extra-long day was broken for high school and primary students when the dramatics department entertained with stage presentations. Under the direction of Priscilla Giltner, the members of the class produced, during the course of the year, three one-act plays: The Pill of Good Will (this page), Run, Robber, Run , and The Hangin' at Sinimin City (next page). 45 Between dance hall girls and crooked sheriffs, Sinimin City became a den of thieves. It took only a respectable husband and wife to transform the city into a respectable town. In the beginning it seemed to be the end of a decent town but in the end the good guys came through and saved the day. 46 47 Ui 0 0 and ye shall find Some pretty unusual sights can be seen on any typical day, if one is only willing to open one's eyes and look around. For instance, how many students noticed the ninth cheerleader on the squad ? Or the fires at the warm-up bench? A student lunching on a pie (next page) is no common sight. The mysteries of nature are under our noses, yet we are too blind to see them. Perhaps if everyone took a REAL look at the world, their problems, although not solved, would diminish in stature. 49 50 and ye shall find 51 To the junior class, it represented an achievement, long in the planning, which culminated in one brief but long-remembered evening. To the seniors, it was a last grasp at life on a high-school level. To the faculty, it was another Prom, following many others and preceding many more. The weeks before Prom were crowded with meetings, discussions, disagreements, and, finally, the actual preparation of the gymnasium for the big event. Paintbrushes and paper streamers were the chief decorations as the juniors slaved day and night to transform the gym into a Paradise. 52 anticipation really greater than realization The junior tribute to the seniors, Lost in Paradise , was more than anyone anticipated. In the native atmosphere of the banquet hall, or the steamy tropical jungle that was created inside the gymnasium, all was perfection, and a fitting tribute to junior ingenuity. the realization 56 Row 1. Young 138 Unity is the single precious commodity sought for by individuals doing their part to communicate. Communication alone can join persons and peoples. So, reach out for someone. To communicate is the beginning of understanding. 139 140 senior 72 The happy-sad heartbreak of the seniors' last year of high school was summed up by Elaine Capps in her speech at the Junior-Senior Banquet: Each year about this time seniors begin looking back over their years in high school and get a nostalgic feeling in their hearts. There isn't anything close to the feeling that comes over you as your senior year comes to an end: ’I can't believe I made it through the whole year.' Seriously, you always carry many fond memories of your class and the many projects you worked on together. Our first project was our brilliant freshman float: 'Run 'em Through a Mill'. It really might have been a great idea if only we could have gotten the windmill to turn! Of course, who will ever forget 'Goblin Up a Victory', which somehow changed to 'Raider Roast', whose victory was Choo-Chooed up. Last year we thought we finally had the coveted title. How could a mile-long paper-wad battleship and a six foot tin foil bicycle beat our fantabulous showboat? But they did, and we still wonder, 'How could the judges do that to us?’ This year was the year we tasted sweet victory. Our rifle, stage coach, apothecary wagon, funeral procession, and other added attractions brought us first place! If only the judges had known that that great piece of gunwork had actually snapped in two right in the middle of Georgia Street! But, of course, the highlight of last year was our prom. We can't help but feel that our prom brought us close together not only as a class but as individuals. Although there was some confusion as to the title, 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ was to us, as every prom is to its class, the most beautiful prom ever. And now, a word FOR our sponsors: THANKS! 142 Denise Rollins, Treasurer; Barry Jones, Vice-President; Elaine Capps, President; Lou Ann Jackson, Secretary. seniors 72 KRVTN ADKTSON TONI ALEXANDER SUSAN ALLISON TOM AMBRA DARCY ASBRIDGE BYREN BASKETT DEAN BOULWARE J.
