It is a time for all the classes to get together to support our Bulldogs in the big game. Spirit Week creates a formulation of activities that brings class competition to its highest fever of the year. To encourage student participation, Pep Club and Student Council promote several exciting activities, like those unforgettable class skits and the parades. Homecoming means something special to everyone at LHS. To the seniors, it is one highlight of four great years of growing up, an event always looked forward to and never forgotten. To the underclassmen it is a reminder of how quickly their few short years in high school are passing. Even as the week goes by, time seems to make events pass too quickly for us to reember everything. When the band plays the last song and Homecoming is over, it leaves behind more than an empty feeling. It draws out a longing to live that week over, to cherish living life to its fullest, squeezing out every ounce of pleasure, and to think with a shrug of the shoulders, Yeah, Homecoming sure was great this year. The senior attendants were Laura Waugh and Gill Girdwood. The class attendants were Beverly Grimes, junior; Leah Somes, sophomore; and Marcia Adkinson, freshman. Ted and Tammy Linn, children of the Bulldog coach, were also part of the coronation ceremony. Right: The honored sophomore float, Easy Winner . Below left: The seniors Destroy 'Em . The parade: sophomores win top float honors fhe game: bulldog superiority smashes bobcats There was no doubt in anyone's mind that the Bowling Green Bobcats would bow to the Bulldogs. As Homecoming Week progressed, the already high spirit climbed; by October 16, the excitement was untamable. No one was disappointed in the outcome of the most planned for, worked for, waited for game of the year: the Bulldogs smashed the Bobcats 56--0. 17 The only thought in everybody's The mood of the evening was festive and the hootnanny provided a good time for all. To start off, a folk song session put everyone in a good mood for the games that followed. Next one of Mrs. Giltner’s stories added to the excitement. Building pyramids, running penny races and three legged races followed. The Student Council raised money by selling apple cider and Mr. Giltner added to his own personal resources when his rendition of A Hole in the Bottom of the Sea moved everyone to throw him their change. This is almost the last effort of the school year and well worth the waiting for. The vocal concert was divided into halves, the first half classical music and the second half current and pop hits. The entire band played for the first part of their concert, with groups and ensembles in the second. Both concerts were wonderful and intensified the beauty of the cool spring weather. 21 Top: The Girls' Glee Club as they take part in the Finale of the Vaudeville Show. You were taken back to the gaiety of the twenties with the dancing of the charleston, Ball in the Jack , and the shimmying of Sister Kate. Singing was also a major part of the show with Baby Rosalie with Goody, Goody and Boo Hoo , Toot Toot Tootsie , If You Knew Susie , Blues in the Night , several numbers by Your Father's Mustache , (the barbershop quartet), and the romantic duet of Let's Call the Whole Thing Off , just to name a few. Un diner par excellence 24 A dinner of excellence was the title of the evening for the French Club dinner. The French Club presented the dinner for the Spanish Club and the special guests. The setting was a small French cafe7 with candle light. From the cuisine francais came the menu: Creme vichysoisse, jambon en croute, Pommes de Terre Duchesse, Petits Pois a La Fran-jais, Salade verte, Petits Gateaux, citron presse', and the glacee. A very enjoyable evening came from Un Diner Par Excellense. Opp. Top: Mrs. Keithly, Rick Henderson, Leah Somes, and Julie Martin prepare the potatoes. Right Julie Martin helps out. The overall science fair winners were Gary Robbins, first place, Craig Hemphill, second place, and Paul Williams, third place. 27 CONCERN VERSUS APATHY: student council ecology project Based on concern for our local environment the Student Council sponsored a Clean Up Day for the student body. The general idea in mind was to pick up the streets and parks of Louisiana. Each student council member was assigned a street or general area through which he was to lead a group of students, picking up trash along the way. After cleaning up several bags of trash on the high school grounds, students were subdivided into groups, each under the leadership of a council member to clean up various sections of the town. A picnic was held afterwards at Riverview Park. Although those who participated worked hard and had a good time, the lack of student and community concern termed this project a partial failure. This year, as always, the class presented several productions to various schools. E o CL O c re +- a; D cr c -Q C CD LO I c 3 IX T This year the Class of 72's use of color and imagination took us Somewhere Over the Rainbow. As every year, preparations began months in advance; then finally, Prom week, when the gym was closed to interested eyes and Juniors began the every-night process of building the best Prom ever. By 6:30 on May 15, everything was finished. No more last minute touches were being put on. The Juniors and Seniors were sitting down to enjoy the fruits of the Juniors' labor at the Banquet, held this year for the first time at the Hercules Club. The speakers, Pat Smith as Junior Class President and George Onik as Senior Class President, were sentimental; the buffet-served food was delicious, both as expected. But it was the Prom itself that showed how well the Juniors had worked, because it was beautiful. Passing the fountain and crossing under the rainbow led to a paper-flower Oz and a dance floor in Emerald City that was too pretty to leave at midnight to go home to Kansas. 32 Color and imagination took us Somewhere over the Rainbow 34 was a dance floor in Emerald City Baccalaureate, Commencement: the culmination of twelve years The graduating class of 1971: experiencing, striving; preparing Working under a general theme of Seventies' Involvement, this year's Student Council officers led the Council in a great many worthwhile activities. The building of the fountain, a major activity, was culminated in the late spring dedication ceremonies pictured above. Mrs. Morrow, at the top of the page, sponsors the Student Council. The 1970-1971 officers were, from the top, Craig Hemp-hill, president; Jon Denney, vice-president; Elaine Sladek, secretary-treasurer; and Pam Sisson, American Field Service Representative. 42 ROW 1: C. Our sponsor, Mrs. Morrow, is tops in Student Council work as well as in her chosen field of mathematics. Under her constant direction the council has flourished as she simply wants the best for her people and the best out of her people. In addition, several members had special leadership training prior to this year. They were Craig Hemphill at Camp Couchdale in Hot Springs, Arkansas, Bill Travis at Camp Cheley in Colorado, and Jon Denney, Pam Sisson, and Elaine Sladek at MASC at Missouri University in Columbia. This special training helped make the year a highly successful one. The council for 1970-71 started the year off right with the completion of the fountain in the courtyard. Later, in the fall, the council hosted the Northeast Missouri District Meeting, of which our council was the president. A planter box was constructed on the front lawn by the council, and at the end of the year plans were being made to build an L on the hillside at the end of the football field. The council was also involved in a good many minor activities, such as the Walk-A-Thon and the ecology project. The student body and the faculty played a leading roll in many of the projects. Together with the council, they made the year's theme of Seventies' Involvement an actuality. 43 ROW 1: Mrs. Giltner, B. Ambra, E. Sladack, J. Middleton, J. Harvey, J. Crawford, S. Wommack. ROW 2: P. Drama is concerned with the portrayal of a thought, idea, or concept through actions and words. Learning to free oneself from inhibitions is one of the necessary talents a drama student must learn during the year. It is this freedom which can make the course an education in itself. Drama connotes a different meaning to each student--a future career, a chance to overcome one's fear of people, an opportunity to explore comic and tragic characters, or just plain fun. Drama Speech The speech class had a full and active year presenting speeches ranging from panel discussions to persuasive speaking to how-to-do speeches. Louisiana was well-represented at the District Speech Contest by eight members of the speech class. Craig Hemphill and Stan Goddard both won Excellent at District and went to State contest and did very well. However, the entire year in Speech was rewarding to all the students by teaching self-confidence and presence in front of an audience. ROW 1: Mrs. Giltner, K. Reid, D. Schraer, M. Nalley, D. Cindy Poyser, Secretary. 53 Character, scholarship, leadership, service . . . these are the qualities considered when a person is chosen as a member of the National Honor Society. Throughout the year, the Honor Society is concerned with moneymaking projects, such as a coat check at the Louisiana tournament games. At the end of the year, the proceeds go toward a banquet honoring the scholastically outstanding seniors. Each year approximately fourteen students are chosen by the librarian to be student librarians. It is entirely up to the student to decide whether to accept the position. Usually two students work every period. They work behind the desk, checking out books and magazines, placing returned books back on the shelves, and helping students to find material they need. Working as a student librarian helps a student to become better acquainted with the way a library is run. Student librarians 54 National honor society ROW 1: A. Cloninger, H. Heady, J. McDaniel, S. Hannibal Technical School 59 s N - ' I Alamo staff The greatest satisfaction comes to every yearbook editor when, late in August, a completed yearbook is pored over for the very first time. It is the culmination of a year's frustration, rushing, and relief at a completed deadline. The average student appreciates the book because it is a record of their school year; a staff member also sees the book as representative of the work it involves. A yearbook does not just happen and it can't be thrown together. Dummy layouts, photographs, copy assignments, typing, final layouts, measured headlines, proportioned pictures, job-stamping, once-a-week meetings— and finally the yearbook is finished. Never to the ultimate satisfaction of the editor, but absolutely perfect the first time it is opened. Every picture, every bit of copy, already so familiar, has to be completely committed to memory as the book is read and reread in happy excitement. The frustration and rushing is forgotten in the pride at the completion of a personal committment. ROW 1: K. Willis, D. Swenson, T. Griffith, B. Ambra, Miss Johns, E. Sladek, J. Runyan, L. Waugh, D. The summer moved on, but in the back of all minds was one thought— winning. Football started falling into place at the late summer and early fall practices; in loud unison, the calisthenics slowly eased bodies into readiness. In the first game, the only defeat of the season came against South Shelby and all of the Bulldog potential was revealed. From then on, the Bulldogs couldn't be stopped, knocking over the remaining nine teams with an apparent ease that came from grueling practices, agility, pain, and sweat. But it paid off in the excitement of placing five players on the All-Conference first team, two on the second place and an Honorable Mention; having two players on the All-District team and one of those named to Honorable Mention All-State; winning the Palmyra Sportsmanship Trophy; and most of all, getting second in the Clarence Cannon Conference. 67 T. Cafer Victory The Junior Class chose Patrick Smith as their President, Bill Morgan as Vice-President, Denise Rollins as Treasurer, and Lou Ann Jackson as Secretary for their class officers for this year. The class of 72 was primarily concerned with money-making projects for prom. We ran the concession stands for both the football and basketball seasons. With indications of greater years ahead, all look forward to the future. Respectfully submitted Lou Ann Jackson, Junior Class Secretary. E. Capps D. Chandler C. Clark A. Cloninger L. Cole B. Cook C. Dryden The class officers of the sophomore class are Alfred Turner, president; Sam Silvey, vice-president; Janet Ince, secretary; and LuAnn Love, treasurer. The student council representatives are Mark Carlton, Lee Anne Hemphill, and Jenny Sladek. The past year has been one we will all remember. The most memorable event is Homecoming. Besides the usual excitement of the game and activities, our class was awarded first place for building the best float. All the effort and hard work finally seemed worthwhile. Our class also held the honor of sponsoring the Sadie Hawkins dance. Other money-making projects included the car wash and concession stands. Being the largest class in LHS seems to lift our spirits, in fact, we were the last to possess the spirit flag during the basketball season--also the last class to see it! I feel that the class will agree that our sophomore year has been full of valuable experiences and is one we will remember and profit from. In its four years at Louisiana High School, the class of 1971 has accomplished many activities. During this time they have had many money-making projects. For instance, they have had car washes, work days, and have sold pencil holders and ties. For two years in a row, they won first place in the float contest in the Homecoming Parade. The themes of these floats were, Bee-line to Victory, and Choo-Choo 'Em Up. In addition to this, the seniors won the competition in the Homecoming skits for three years and the competition for spirit links for one year. The class of 1971 also has helped the student council with the construction of the water fountain in front of the school. Another money-making project of the class was the addition of a soda machine in the school hall from which the class gets the profits.
