The Class of '65 began their busy year with election of Linda Woodfield as president; Johnny Barnum as vice-president; Shirley Gillett as secretary; and as treasurer, Ann Taliaferro. These officers worked with Mrs. Artus, Mr. Hemphill, and Mr. Coxsey, and the entire Junior Class to give the Seniors of '64 a Prom and Banquet they would be proud of. The gym was transformed into an evening at Tara. Blue-starred crepe paper draped the ceiling and a pond was placed among white magnolia trees. A flower-adorned trellis made a most effective entrance. Eight white columns were placed between white cast iron flower planters. It would be a tough job for the Juniors to decide which was more fun—the decorating or the dance. Money for the Prom and Banquet was attained from many projects, some of which are the following: car washes, bake sale, and sock-hops. The Junior's Prom—big event of the year. It began the school year by electing Jeff Hallows as President, Roger Williamson as Vice-President, and Janice Hampton as Secretary-Treasurer. The members of the class entered into the Homecoming activities by working diligently on a float with the caption, Run 'Em Thru the Mill. Their efforts were rewarded by receiving second place in the contest. The sophomores have had various moneymaking activities, such as two sock-hops and a bake-sale. The sock-hops proved very worthwhile. The sophomore class would like to thank its capable sponsors, Mrs. Morrow, Mr. Sisson, and Mr. Robert Smith for their help in making the past year a successful one. Peter Marcellus, Georgia Perkins, and Jo Anne Dryden represented us on the Student Council. A little frightened, a little overwhelmed at the strangeness of our surroundings, we scarcely dared to venture from our path to undertake any social activities. However, we did join in the Homecoming activities by entering a float—a large lawn mower captioned with We'll Mow 'Em Over. Our sponsors, Mrs. Schaper, Mrs. Giltner, and Mr. Niemeyer, have ably guided us through our first year, and the Freshman Class would like to thank them for their leadership. What is the yearbook? A project which takes much time, co-operation, and planning. This year the members of the Alamo Staff, with the help of Miss Vaughn, have worked hard to publish a good yearbook. Hank Pierce has worked as editor, and has been assisted by Donald Taylor. Of course, the work of the staff isn't limited to the putting-together of the book; it involves selling advertisements, getting subscriptions, and distributing the Alamos. Throughout the year, the staff has learned more efficient ways of assembling the Alamo and has gotten some new ideas. The members of the staff would like to thank its sponsor, Miss Jane Vaughn for her help in publishing a successful Alamo. 54 : on the Go Donald Taylor Barby Woolcott Ron Holtsman Georgia Perkins Mary Lou Kilby Jan Morris Student Council Has FIRST ROW: Georgia Perkins, Elizabeth Glenn, Jo Ann Dryden, Ronnie Holtsman, Pete Marcellus, Jock Littrell, Carl Littrell, John Nancy Oliver, Jan Morris, Linda Williamson, Linda Ince, Sheila Cun- Ray, Jim Word, and Jerry Griffith, ninghom, Barby Woolcott. SECOND ROW: Mrs. Ellen Morrow, Before school started, the Student Council sponsored an all-school party, to introduce our A.F.S. student and also to exchange Alamo autographs. As a service to the school, the Council had paper and pencil machines installed. A weekly calendar in the trophy case served as a reminder for students. The Homecoming parade, the coronation of the queen, and the dance were sponsored by the Council. The Student Council is largely responsible for getting our A.F.S. student here. To raise the school's share of money for next year's A.F.S. student, the Council co-sponsored the Senior-Faculty basketball game. The Council also ran for the Vice-Presidency of the Missouri Association of Student Councils. Many L.H.S. students attended the convention to support this campaign. Even though we lost the election, it was felt that it was certainly a worthwhile project. An assembly program was started by the Council to arouse organizations and classes to present assemblies, in addition to various others presented throughout the year. A great deal of thanks goes to Mrs. Kenneth Morrow, the Council sponsor, and to Mr. Taylor, for his cooperation. 56 Progressive Year Student Council Officer SEATED: Elizabeth Glenn, Vice-President; Jerry Griffith; President, Linda Ince, Secretary-Treasurer,- STANDING: Nancy Oliver, A.F.S. The French Club programs have been changed by the addition of slides and tapes about France. These slides introduce new vocabulary, while bringing in many facts about the geography of France. Of course, the traditional fare of French songs add to the enjoyment of the club. Mrs. Kermit Schaper, the sponsor of French Club, has again divided French Club into two divisions: one for French I, and another for French 11,111, and IV. The officers of French Club are as follows: Eddy Bass, reporter; Barbara Bopp, secretary,- Ara Lewellen, vice president; Barbara. Woolcott, song leader,- Mary Lou Kilby, president; and Elizabeth Glenn, song leader. To finance its activities, the French Clubs sold candy at the annual basketball tournament. This year's French I has proven to be very interesting yet beneficial at the same time. We started the year with a lot of enthusiasm and have accomplished as much or more than we expected. At first we learned only small things, but as the year progressed we speeded up, and now we find ourselves more acquainted with the language. On each of our holidays we learned something about the French equivalent and their customs on these days. We have advanced from where we knew only single words to where we can write entire sentences. Our year ended with the learning of the passe compose. The French I class would like to not only express its gratitude to Mrs. Schaper for her time and patience, but also express its deep regret that she is leaving us. 61 Highlights Staff The Highlights Staff this year has worked hard to keep the public as well as the students informed on major events and happenings at L.H.S. It has also tried to promote better public relations between L.H.S. and the community. The co-editors, Donna Parsons and Chris Muff have done a fine job this year of editing the Highlights and of collecting interesting and worthwhile material. They are to be commended for their efforts as much of their time was devoted to their job. The Highlights Staff would like to extend its thanks to Mr. Lula Beth Griffith, its sponsor, for all her help in making a Highlights section possible in the Louisiana Press Journal. The National Honor Society, under the sponsorship of Miss Lois Hastings, had a very busy year. The elected officers were as follows: Ara Lewellen, President; Nancy Oliver, vice-president; Ellen Elgin, secretary,- and Annice Schaper, treasurer. Our first project this year was to co-sponsor with the F.H.A. club a panel of Americans representing different religions to speak before the student body. Next, we organized a penny march in order to raise class spirit and class competition for Homecoming. We held our initiation ceremony for the new members in April. The spirit at our football and basketball games has been led and supported for many years by its Pep Squad. They play a vital part in the sports activities by urging the boys on to victory. Each year the squad becomes larger and louder; this year it boasted sixty members. Elected to lead this organization were President, Pam Morrow; Vice-President, Donna Parsons,- Secretary, Kathy Harvey,- and Treasurer, Tinka Sizemore. Mr. Richard served as sponsor of this mighty group. The Pep Club sponsored the Crazy Day activities, decorated the football field for Homecoming, chose new uniforms, and served as guides for the Basketball Tournament. On October 25, 1963, the annual Homecoming Festival was presented with much pomp and frivolity. Beginning iri the early afternoon, a parade consisting of the band, leading the procession, and eight floats representing four classes, F.T.A., F.F.A., Photo Club, and National Honor Society was held. Following the parade, enthusiam and school spirit was spread throughout the student body by the well-attended pep rally at the football field. After leaving the pep rally, the girls headed for numerous beauty shops and the boys went to pick up their sweetheart's corsages. Upon their return to the field, the students witnessed the transformation of the drab football field into an attractive battleground. This combat proved highly rewarding—the Bulldogs defeted the Panthers 6 to 0. The dance, which followed the game, was the crowning event of the very successful day. The Student Council had provided an attractive background for the dance by portraying the captured panther in the Bulldog's web of victory. All in all the word success best describes this 1963-64 Homecoming. 81 The Pep Rally 1$ over. The Band plays at half-time with Louisiana in the lead. 83 Crazy Day The annual Crazy Day was held on Homecoming Day again this year. The purpose of this day is to have fun, promote school spirit, and to give students a chance to dress up as their favorite storybook character would. This year there was a variety of characters also a lot of fun. These CRAZY characters were able to show off their fancy outfits as they marched in the Homecoming Parade. Marching in the parade gave the students a chance to show the citizens of Louisiana that L.H.S. has a lot of school spirit. The students were thrilled from a visit with Mr. and Mrs. Santa Clause, Mickey Mouse, Freddy from the Flintstones, and many more of their favorite characters. Mr. Taylor and two of his favorite cheerleaders. Sweetheart Dance King and Queen of the Sweetheart Dance Gary Reeves and Jane Rule The Sweetheart Dance was held on February 15th. The gymnasium was decorated with appropriate decorations. During intermission, Gary Reeves and Jane Rule were crowned King and Queen of the Sweetheart Dance. Senior Play Honk Pierce as Gordon Warren, Tinka Sizemore as Jane Gardner, and Barby Woolcott as Mrs. Donley. After weeks of practice and rehearsal, the Senior Play, Lock, Stock, and Lipstick, was presented, on the L.H.S. stage, to a packed house. Hank Pierce played Gordon Warren, a school guidance counselor who, at the end of the play, marries the girls' counselor, Jane Gardner, played by Tinka Sizemore. The school janitor, who takes over Warren's place as counselor, was portrayed by Jerry Griffith. The faculty was absolutely great this year. The Seniors aren't to be slighted. They fought so earnestly that some of the faculty members were partially doubtful about the outcome. When the faculty attained their lead, they held it for the greatest portion of the game. The faculty has an undefeated record. The faculty's cheerleaders helped arouse spirit as well as did some of the mothers of the seniors who were the cheerleaders for the seniors. The Senior class will try to break their record when they take them on next year. 90 Finally, the big day comes Our platform guests were Mr. Taylor, Mr. Deters, Dr. Byron, Mr. Woolcott and Rev. Quigley. Senior Class History The Class of 1964 entered Louisiana High School under the leadership of Carl Littrell as President; Annice Schaper, Vice-President; Mary Lou Kilby, Secretary-Treasurer,- and Ara Lewellen, and Carl Littrell, Student Council Representatives. This was a united class adding enthusiasm to all they undertook. As Green Freshmen the class sponsored a class beatnic party, sock hop, and car wash. To help guide the class through another successful year, Carl Littrell served as Sophomore President; Mary Lou Kilby, Vice-President; Lois Wilson, Secretary,- Pat Brown, Treasurer, Pam Morrow, Historian,- Terry Prechter, Parliamentarian; and Jane Rule and Jerry Griffith, Student Council Representatives. The Sizzling Sophs worked diligently to prove that their class was unusual and unique. Displaying their ingenuity and creativity, the Sophomores won second place in the float contest and sponsored a rollickin' Roaring 20's class party. Ellen Elgin was chosen by her classmates to serve as Junior President; Terry Prechter, Vice-President; Mary Lou Kilby, Secretary,- Pat Brown, Treasurer; and Ara Lewellen, Jane Rule, and John Ray, Student Council Representatives. This was an important year for the Class of 1964; they feverishly worked to make enough money to honor the Seniors with the biggest and best prom ever produced Several of their financial successes were the Sadie Hawkins Dance, a book fair, a bake sale, and the tournament kitchen. Only through the combined efforts of each member of the class could the beautiful prom, Isle of Dreams, have materialized. Each Junior contributed to each activity the class undertook, and again they placed in the Homecoming activities, capturing first prize. Reaching the last step of their high school education, the Seniors chose Pam Morrow as President; Art Lewellen, Vice-President; Jane Rule, Secretary; Mary Lou Kilby, Treasurer; and John Ray, Carl Littrell, and Barby Woolcott, Student Council Representatives. Although the Seniors excelled scholastically, they still found time to have a class picnic, sponsor a Sadie Hawkins Dance, produce the Senior Play, travel to Osage Beach on the Senior trip, and again win first place in the Homecoming float contest. On May 28, sixty-five Seniors proudly marched down the aisle to receive their diplomas,- this marked the climax of their high school ambitions. The Class of 1964 was an outstanding class, producing an exceptional scholastic record and an enthusiastic class spirit. Special thanks goes to three wonderful sponsors who were guiding hands over the bumps, rebellions, and disappointments; they were always willing to add a needed word of encouragement and advice. Much of the success of this class is due to the hard work of Mrs. Melvin Griffith, Miss Lois Hastings, and Mr. Robert Lohrmon. 92 ATHLETICS LHS Gridders Have Impressive Year The Louisiana High School football season was a great deal more exciting and rewarding than the 4—4—1 record may indicate. Plagued by injuries and illness throughout the season, the Bulldogs fought tooth and nail against every opponent. Opening the season with an inexperienced backfield and spotty blocking, we were shut out by both crossriver rivals, Pittsfield and Pleasant Hill. However, the Quint City Conference season was opened with a resounding defeat of Mark Twain, followed by a tie with Mc-Cooey and a determined defeat of Shelbina. Any Louisiana hopes of a conference championship were lost by a defeat from Monroe City, but Homecoming was brightened by pounding Centralia. The biggest game of the season was the one-point win over conference champ Palmyra. Ragged from injuries, the Bulldogs fell to Warrenfon in the final game. Little space was provided for easy breathing in the tough schedule. The season started with wins over Van-Far and Elsberry, followed by consolation honors in the Centralia Tournament. In the first Quint City Conference play, McCooey defeated the Bulldogs, but L.H.S. won four straight over Shelbina, Mark Twain, North Shelby, and Palmyra. Centralia, however, ended the streak, but we beat Monroe City before going into the Louisiana Tournament. Beating Elsberry, losing to Pittsfield and falling to Van-Far was the poor fortune of the Bulldogs. In the annual rivalry, the Bowling Green team overpowered the Bulldogs, but we came back to defeat Mark Twain. In the Bowling Green Tournament, Montgomery City and Mark Twain eliminated the Bulldogs. McCooey and Centralia came on to defeat the L.H.S. boys, followed by a Clopton victory. The Bulldogs compiled a 14—13 record and third place in the Quint City Conference. 102 Varsity A-Team Basketball Record School Played We They Van-Far 56-52 Elsberry 65-50 McCooey 53-58 Shelbina 64-62 Mark Twain 60-53 North Shelby 68-49 Palmyra 79-67 Centra lia 69-70 Monroe City 73-59 School Played We They Bowling Green 54-73 Mark Twain 69-59 McCooey 56-71 Centralia 50-59 Clopton 37-72 Monroe City 77-68 North Shelby 71-74 Palmyra 84-62 Shelbina 75-54 BACK ROW: Mr. Blois, John Word, Jock Littrell, Carl Littrell, Gory j0hn Ray, Randy Schmitt, Ray Smith, Pete Marcellus, Johnny Reeves, Chris Muff, Mr. Cunningham. Track The Bulldog track season was one that we can all be proud of. Although the team did not come up to the reputation of past teams, it did very well. The Bulldogs took no places in the state indoor. This meet and those up until mid-April were hampered by bad weather. The Bulldogs couldn't get good weather for training; consequently it was late in the season when the Bulldogs reached their peak. In a quadrangular meet at Monroe City, the L.H.S. team finished second to the host followed by Shelbina and McCooey. In a triangular meet at Louisiana, the Bulldogs trounced Mark Twain and McCooey. The annual Pittsfield meet was won by Unity of Memdpm, Louisiana finishing second, Pittsfield, third. At the Quincy Relays, the Spring Medley Relay team won its race for all Louisiana's ten points. Louisiana finished sixth among twenty schools. The Bulldogs surprised everyone in a strong bid for the championship. Going into the final event, Monroe and Louisiana were tied for the lead, the Monroe finally won out. In a triangular at Bowling Green, we finished second to the Bobcats, Montgomery City in third place. At the Kirksville District Meet, the Bulldogs earned seven points, but failed to qualify anyone for the State Outdoor Track Meet. 104 MR 880-Yard Relay Team: John Barnum, Dick Miller, Dick Mullen, Kenny Lee Mile-Relay Team: John Barnum, Dick Miller, Kenny Lee.
