Jan Thomas was elected president; John Casteel, vice-president; Jean Ann Shields, secretary; and Margy Henderson, treasurer. We were unusually active in the school organizations for freshmen. Our sophomore year we elected Karen Millner, president; Marilyn Johns, vice-president; and Diane Price, secretary-treasurer. Five were among the twelve original members of the National Honor Society, seven boys earned varsity letters, and all of us backed our classmates in the student council elections. As juniors, we chose Marilyn Knaus to be our president; Dick Marcellus, vice-president; Karen Millner, secretary; and Diane Price, treasurer. Through various projects such as the fruit cake sale, pizza and short orders at the tournament, and several parties, we raised money to have a very original and successful Junior-Senior Prom and Banquet. Our theme was an underwater fantasy, complete with fish murals, treasure chest, and a huge sea shell surrounding the band. As seniors we have the honor to be the first class to graduate from the new high school. We elected Bill Leverington, president; Bill Bass, vice-president; and Margaret Mosley, secretary-treasurer. Our class contained officers of many clubs and chairmen of many school projects. Our play, LOST HORIZONS , was very successful. We wish to extend our sincere gratitude to our sponsors, Mrs. Margaret Schaper, Mr. Aaron Hemphill, and Mr. Thomas Niemeyer for their assistance and encouragement throughout our high school years. Also, to the teachers and administrators, thank you. LEFT TO RIGHT: Bill Leverington, vice-president; Margaret Mosley, secretary-treasurer; Bill Bass, president. The following class officers were elected to serve the class: Ellen Elgin, president; Terry Prechter, vice-president; Mary Lou Kilby, secretary; Pat Brown, treasurer. The Student Council representatives were: Ara Lewellen, Jane Rule, and John Ray. Judging from the successful year, the Juniors had competent officers. Various work projects to make money for the all important prom were a bake sale, book fair, and the tournament kitchen. The Junior Class sponsored the annual Sadie Hawkins Dance and the Highlights. A Class picnic was held at Jerry Griffith's farm on May 27. uy working together, the Class created a 1st prize float in the Homecoming Parade— the theme, It Adds Up to Victory. Showing still greater co-operation, the Juniors put on the biggest and best Junior-Senior Prom and Banquet. The prom theme was Isle of Dreams. The evening started with a luau. The banquet room was decorated in a Hawaiian motif with students sitting on the floor. Every student dressed according to the Hawaiian theme. At the prom the decorations were spectacular. The main centerpiece consisted of a little grass hut beside a mountain. A stream ran down the mountain into a large pond. A bridge over the pond, palm trees, and ferns completed the tropical setting. The wall behind this romantic setting was a sand and sea mural. Dividing the dancing floor from the tables was a wall of netting and shrimp traps. Caught in this wall were fish, shells and mermaids. The entire ceiling was lowered with blue streamers. The over-all effect was one of a tropical paradise. That peppy, alert, alive Class of ’65 was back again, but this year, instead of green freshmen, they were sophisticated sophomores. They started off with a bouncy bang by electing the following able officers: President, Jack Littrell; vice-president, John Barnum; secretary, Linda Williamson; treasurer, Ann Taliaferro; their voices in Student Council, Nancy Oliver, Linda Woodfield, and Elizabeth Glenn. The class displayed co-operation by making the Homecoming float which placed second in the competition. A huge bulldog with a moving mouth and tail dominated the float. It was captioned We'll put the bite on'em. The Soph Sock Hop during football season was a big success and gave their treasury a boost. They decorated the gym with large cardboard replicas of records and served cookies and soft drinks. When basketball season came along, the Class of '65 wouldn't let themselves rest on their laurels, so they got busy again and sponsored another sock hop, this one just as profitable as the last. Their record shows them to be a pretty active class, but they couldn't have done it without the good backing of their sponsors. The Class of '65 would like to thank Mrs. Artus, Mrs. Smith, and Mr. Mitchell, for their fine guidance. 42 Ann Arnold Bill Barnum Johnny Barnum Eddie Bass Hilda Beer Nancy Cafer Nelson Clark William Cole Clyde Elliott John Elliott Marlene Elliott Bill England Bernice Duncan 44 Dennis Goodman Robby Griego Carolyn Griffith Martin Hampton Phil Hancox Cathy Harness Kathy Harvey David Henry Danny Hockaday Bruce Hotz Betty Hunt Carol Hutt Linda I nee Scott Jennings Chuckie Johns Dorothy Minor Larry Minor Charlotte Mitchell Jan Morris Chris Muff John A. Bonnie Monfort, Tom Thomas, and Marshall Bishop represented them in the Student Council. With great enthusiasm the Class of '65 joined in the Homecoming activities by entering a float with the theme I Wouldn't Bet a Scent on the Indians. Although the float did not win a prize, the class had lots of fun trying. In December the Freshmen sponsored their first money-making project, a sock hop with a Christmas theme. Strings of lights decorated the gym, refreshments were served, and everyone enjoyed himself. The Freshmen would like to thank their sponsors: Mrs. Ellen Morrow, Mr. Richard Coxey, and Mr. Bill Jay Sisson for their strong support this year. Parallel to this, the students participated in Crazy Day which is a day where the students dress as their favorite characters. Along with the attendants, Queen, and floats in the parade, many of the students participated by marching. The parade which took place Friday afternoon culminated in a pep rally in which the students showed great school spirit. The attendants for Homecoming this year were as follows: senior class, Marilyn Johns escorted by Kirk Klemme; junior class, Jean Vaughn escorted by Ronnie Blackwell; sophomore class, Brenda Bland escorted by John Barnum; and freshman class, Janice Hampton escorted by Rick Knaus. The Homecoming Queen was Marilyn Knaus who was crowned by co-captains Randy DeVerger and Donnie Turner. The Homecoming game with Shelbina Indians was won by L.H.S. by a score of 31 to 13. During the half-time, the Queen was crowned by the co-captains. The attendants were brought onto the field in convertibles furnished by Toley Smith, Ford, Inc. Also at half-time, the prizes for the floats were announced which were as follows: third place went to the seniors, second place to the sophomores and first place to the juniors. Decorations for the Homecoming Dance were made by the Student Council who sponsored Homecoming. Bulldog heads and Indian heads hung from the baskets with streamers of red and white. The walls were decor a ted with murals and with a large sign which welcomed the graduates of L.H.S. Music was furnished by the Pat Benning band. It is a night of dreams and fantasy, attended by all. The gym was transformed into a tropical Hawaiian paradise. The main entrance was made by draping fish netting in which lovely mermaids and various species of fish were entwined. Highlighting the dance floor was a tropical mountain from which a stream originated. The stream ran into a two-stage pond in which orchids floated and goldfish flitted. A rustic bridge crossed the ponds. Beside the pond was a typical grass hut surrounded by tropical plants. One entire wall was decorated with a beach scene consisting of a sand and sea mural. Large willowy palm trees were scattered around the dance floor. Spectators and non-dancers sat at tables decorated with miniature palm trees and wax encrusted bottles holding candles. The tables were arranged so as to give the effect of an outdoor tropical garden. Several flowering plants surrounded the tables. The Count Downs from St. Louis provided a variety of dance music. Originality of idea was at a peak. We began preparing for an active year by sending six delegates to the Missouri Association of Student Council's summer workshop. The attending council members were: Bob Shields, President-Jerry Griffith, Vice-President; Pam Morrow, Secretary; Marilyn Johns and Ara Lewellen, members; Kirk Klemme, roreign Exchange Representative. Even before the doors were opened for enrollment, the council was at work. We made the necessary preparations and encouraged citizens of Louisiana to form a local American Field Service Chapter A foreign exchange student was then procured for the 1963-'64 school year. Council During registration week we received used books and sold them to registering students. This was done at a small cost and was of benefit to the student body and their Student Council. The annual all school workday project was expanded to a semi-annual affair with one work day in the fall and the other in the spring. The success of this activity is noted in the treasury. ,, Aside from these activities and the traditional projects the council assisted the administration by presiding over assemblies, inspecting lockers, and ushering for the dedication of our new building. This year was a tribute to the student body, the council, and their sponsor, Mrs. Morrow. Thank you for your support. National Honor Society The Louisiana Chapter of the National Honor Society has had a profitable and successful year. Though this is a comparatively young organization, it has shown much development and growth during the 1962-63 year. The purpose of the Society is to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy development of character in an individual. The Louisiana Chapter has made this its first and foremost aim in all the activities it sponsored. To guide the N.H.S. successfully through the year competent officers were elected: Margaret Henderson, president; Martha Miller, vice-president; and Ara Lewellen, secretary. Numerous activities were undertaken by the Society. Letters of commendation were sent to students obtaining a position on the honor roll. The Honor Society sold coffee and donuts at the basketball games; they also sponsored a hat and coat check. In the spring of the year the Society held its annual installation and tea for new members. After viewing the accomplishments and goals of the National Honor Society, one can understand why membership in this organization is an honor sought by all. Due to the addition of so many members, our sponsor, Mrs. Margaret Schaper, divided the club into two main branches: French I, and French II and III. The club's activities were interesting and varied, but with the accent always on French. In December, we were visited by one of French Club's former members, Judy Glenn, who narrated her pictorial story of life in France. During monthly meetings, members learned French songs, vocabulary, and customs. They heard dialogues, watched skits, and on many occasions enjoyed refreshments. Marking the end of its meetings was the annual picnic at which the members ate, drank their lemonade, and were merry, for another year of French Club had come to an end. The Louisiana F.F. A. is one of the most active organizations in the high school. The F.F.A. sponsors a Barn Warming Dance and an assembly program in which the F.F.A. informs the student body of the work which is being carried out by the local chapter. LOUISIANA 83 The Photography Club, an organization with good potential, laid a stronger foundation this year to heighten its future standing among L.H.S. extra-curricular activities. A relatively new organization under the leadership of president Hank Pierce, the club was greatly advanced with the addition of a new darkroom. Equipment was mostly donated, and with the help, of the co-sponsors Mr. Coxsey and Mr. Morris, members learned the basic techniques of photography. The Club hopes to buy a few of the much needed darkroom essentials with the added money in the treasury and looks forward to even more prosperous years in the future. The first of the many activities was the first sockhop of the year which proved to be very successful. Unlike the practice in previous years, the L Club initiation was conducted before the student body. The seventeen initiates were made to wear their clothing inside-out and backwards, push peanuts down the hallways with their nose, sing to the teachers, and dance around the Christmas tree. The remainder of the initiation was during a closed meeting that night. Six Junior and Senior members attended the Class M State Basketball Finals in Columbia, Missouri. This event was the annual L Club trip. The members of the L Club would like to take this opportunity to express their sincere appreciation for the assistance of their sponsors. Pep Squad. Under the leadership of Ann Talliaferro, President; Lois Wilson, 'Tee-President; Jean Vaughn, Secretary; and Ara Lewellen, Treasurer; the Pep Squad began its activities. The Pep Squad decided to have uniforms this year and began by purchasing red pleated skirts. Next year, the members hope to complete their outfits with white sweaters. Crazy Day was again sponsored by the Pep Squad. This activity added much enthusiasm to the Homecoming festivities. Lois Wilson was chosen as the candidate for queen of the Bowling Green Tournament. With loyal support, Lois won, making this the second consecutive year that a candidate from Louisiana has won the honored title. A year of performance and learning was the agenda for the fifteen boys and thirty girls enrolled. The season of performances started with the Dedication service on November 4th. This was the first occasion the Girls' Glee Club had to wear their new uniforms. The annual Christmas Concert held jointly between the Band and Glee Clubs was the next program given. The concert was held on the new stage, enabling the Glee Club to use the effectiveness of lighting previously impossible. As in past years the Girls' Glee Club and many small ensembles participated in the District Music Festival. This year we are proud to say our Glee Club took a I rating under the expert direction of Mrs. Branstetter and with the help of Ara Lewellan, accompanist. Many of the ensembles received the top rating also. The following is a list of those groups: Double Mixed Quartet, Mixed Quartet, Girls' and Boys' Double Quartet. The vocal solos that received I's were Martha Miller, Bill Bass, Dennis Goodman, and Colleen Rose. All of the groups and solos received a II rating at the State Contest held in April. This year the Glee Club presented for the town and school an operetta, The Singing Freshman. The scene being a college hangout provided much entertainment for both participant and viewer. Mrs. Branstetter's diligent and hard work with the Glee Clubs in the past years has given much to the Louisiana School System. We are truly appreciative for her contribution during these years. 90 FRONT ROW: Penny Price, Carolyn Gierke, Rosemary Coleman, Peggy Parker, Rose Smith, Karen Millner, Peggy Smith, Charles Strode, Larry Brown, Butch Wetzel, Mike Griffith, Kerwin Rohr, Sammy Lee, Jerry Naramore, Barbara Bopp, Bonnie Monfort, Mary Lou Kilby, Judy Bandy, Linda Williamson, and Linda Ince. TRUMPET TRIO Jan Thomas Bart Griffith Jerry Griffith accompanied by Karen Millner Band The Louisiana High School Band opened its official season under the directorship of Mr. Harold Webb at the first home football game. They presented half-time shows at all home town games and marched in several parades. At the close of the marching season the band turned to concert music. The first performance was at the Dedication of the new building. The Christmas Concert was given by the Glee Clubs and the Band. As usual after the hectic Christmas time the band settles into a routine of practice, practice for the Spring Concert and Contest which occur very close together. This year at the District Music Festival the Band obtained a III rating. Among the Louisiana Hi ensemble entrants Ronnie Meyer (tuba solo), Elizabeth Glenn (piano solo), Dennis Goodman (piano solo), and the clarinet choir composed of the entire clarinet section took I ratings. All of these (excluding the clarinet choir because of size) received a II rating at the State Music Festival. The Spring Concert given by the band was an example of the band's performing ability. The program was musically excellent and enjoyable. Mr. Webb should be given much credit for the hard work required by this concert. Ending this fruitful season the band played the customary Pomp and Circumstance at our Baccalaureate and Commencement. Majorettes 95 ATHLETICS Footba The Bulldogs lost a cliff hanger in their first Quint-City Conference game with Mark Twain. The Tigers completed a touchdown pass and scored the extra point with only twelve seconds remaining in the game. They were victorious by a score of 13-14. Louisiana played host toMcCooeyand shut them out, 13-0, for the Bulldog's first conference win. Donnie Turner was the team's leading ground-gainer. He made the All-Conference Second Team and was named Most Valuable Football Player at the annual Athletic Banquet. Bob Shields was a second team end and Dick Marcellus, guard, made honorable mention in other All-Conference selections. The team provided exciting football and experienced an enjoyable season. That is the prime requisite for an athletic program. This year's football team reported to its first practice at the new field on August 16. Coach William Cunningham and his assistant, Mr. Blais, led the team in conditioning and fundamental drills. Team progress was slow but sure in preparation for the first game against the Pittsfield Saukees. It was a defensive game resulting in a 13-13 tie. Wentzville was the foe the Bulldogs faced next. Players were running over the field, but not many crossed the goal. With a heartbreaking touchdown in the last seven seconds, the Wentzville team won, 14-19. 98 RANDY DEVERGER CO-CAPTAINS DONNIE TURNER Scores Pittsfield 13 13 Bulldogs Wentzville 19 14 Bulldogs Mark Twain 14 13 Bulldogs McCooey 0 19 Bulldogs Shelbina 13 31 Bulldogs Monroe City 28 6 Bulldogs Centralia 53 0 Bulldogs Palmyra 13 27 Bulldogs B Team Mark Twain 0 0 Bulldogs Pittsfield 28 7 Bulldogs Pleasant Hill 13 0 Bulldogs Monroe City 26 13 Bulldogs Warrenton 27 0 Bulldogs FIRST ROW: Roger Williamson, Clay Logan, Jeff Hallows, Rick Knaus, Phil Hancox, and Bruce Hotz. The conference season was started against McCooey with a resounding victory inaugurating the new L.H.S. gymnasium. The Bulldogs took the consolation prize from Van-Far on a last second field goal in the Louisiana Tournament. In the black division of the Bowling Green Tournament the Bulldogs were beaten by Van Far in the consolation ame. The Bulldogs were awarded the portsmanship trophy. The Bulldogs ended the season with a 6-6 conference record which put them in third place. The Bulldogs were eliminated from further competition in the Regional Tournament by Clopton. The Quint City Conference awarded the Bulldogs the Sportsmanship Trophy. Sportsmanship always marked the Bulldog basketball team. This is a record which any group can prize. Bad weather marked the first weeks of the season, as a result, the track team went' to state indoor with only a few days practice out of doors. This year the Bulldog tracksters failed to score a point in the competition. Louisiana easily handed Van-Far's team a defeat in the first dual meet. Again at the Central School track, the Bulldogs beat Mark Twain and McCooey in a triangular meet. The next week at Pittsfield the Bulldogs were beaten for the first time by that team. At the Quincy Relays the Bulldogs took second-place in a field of twenty teams. At the Quint-City Conference meet the Bulldogs pulled third-place behind Centralia and Monroe City. At the Bowling Green Quadrangular, Louisiana took second place. At the District track meet, the team piled up a lot of fourth places for 11 2 3 points. Randy DeVerger qualified for the State Outdoor with third in the 100-yard dash. At the Mark Twain Relays, Dickie Miller and Kenny Lee came in fourth and fifth in the 220 for the team's only points. The Bulldogs did well this season considering the lack of upperclassman participants. The flock of trackmen in the freshman and sophomore classes who competed against older and stronger athletes have gained much experience which should help future teams. At the annual athletic banquet Randy DeVerger was named the outstanding track man. Randy Schmitt was named the Outstanding Freshman All-round Athlete. 106 FIRST ROW: Phil Hancox, Benny Sloan, Robbie Griffith, Butch Wetzel, Billy Barnum, Sammy Richardson,Sammy Lee, Billy Goodin, Jerry Naramore, Tommy Thomas, and Jeff Hallows.
