Active Year for Glee Clubs The beginning of the 1961-1962 school year found M rs. Sarah Jane Branstetter, chorus director, recruiting boys to form a boys glee club. The boys glee club rose to a total membership of seventeen. The music department bought white coats which went with dark trousers and black bow ties to compose the official uniform of the boys’ glee club. The girls’ glee club increased to forty-eight members since the previous school year. The official uniform is white blouses and dark skirts. The LHS chorus performed at many different functions. Small ensembles performed at many churches in the area and at many school-sponsored activities. This year the first Quint City All-Conference Chorus was formed. Eleven LHS chorus members represented LHS in the group. They were: Pat Wickell, Charlotte Dewey, Susie White, Martha Miller, Barby Woolcott, Janet Millner, Karen Millner, Mary Lou Kilby, Dennis Goodman, Kenny Lee, and Bill Bass. Along with all of its other activities, the girls' glee club attended the district music contest at Mexico. The group received a II rating on Dona Nobis Pacem. Besides the girls' glee club, a boys’ quartet, girls' quartet, girls' trio, girls' sextet and six solos attended the meet. The two quartets and the trio received I ratings and the sextet received a n. Vocal solos which received II ratings were performed by Barby Woolcott, Bill Bass, Mike Griffith, and Dennis Goodman. Peggy Smith and Charlotte Dewey received III ratings on their solos. At the state contest, the girls' quartet and the girls' trio received III ratings. The boys' quartet was unable to attend. Martha Miller, Ara Lewellen, and Bill Bass took piano solos to the district contest. Martha and Ara received I ratings and Bill received a II rating. At the state contest Martha received a I rating and Ara received a II. We take this opportunity to thank Mrs. Sarah Jane Branstetter for her fine work with the vocal music department during the past two years. Working on short notice many times, she always came up with an entertaining program for the listeners. A fine job such as this deserves commendation. Boys’ Quartet Bill Bass, Bob Wortman, Bob Campbell, and Dennis Goodman. District Rating: I

L.H.S. Marching Band Ten Play in All-Conference Band Fifty-seven members were present atthe'first business meeting of the LHS band. Band master Harold Webb made the following appointments for the 1961-62 school year: Jim Worsham, captain; Karen Carr, Margy Henderson, Bart Griffith, and Ireland Allensworth, lieutenants. The band then elected these officers: Karen Millner, secretary; Jan Thomas, treasurer; and Janet Millner, librarian. Allen Randall served as drum major for most of the marching season. The band was busy in the fall preparing halftime shows, a highlight of any football game. This season the band presented three half-time shows: Salute to Sousa, Huckleberry Hound and Wheels. The latter show also included the junior band. On October 10, the band marched at the 13th annual Mark Twain Band Marching Festival. Thirteen proved to be unlucky because the evening performance was rained out; however, the band was one of twenty-seven bands to march in the morning parade. Playing Little Brown Mambo and Happy Days Are Here Again, the LHS band led the annual Homecoming Parade as the majorettes performed in front of the band. At the Homecoming Game, the band played Unchained Melody as the queen was crowned. This year the first Quint City All-Conference Band was formed. Ten LHS band members took part in this event. They were: Ireland Allensworth, Karen Carr, Carol Culley, Ellen Elgin, Margy Henderson, Janet Millner, Pam Morrow, Diane Price, Jan Thomas, and Jim Worsham. The band took Second American Folk Rhapsody to the district contest and received a II rating. Other ratings were: trumpet trio, II; trumpet quartet, III; mixed clarinet quartet, II. In addition to activities of the band as a whole, the pep band was busy playing at all pep assemblies and home basketball games. The pep band added spirit and enthusiasm to the football and basketball seasons. The band presented an assembly for the student body April 30 and played for the awards assembly May 25. 26
