L.H.S. Marching Band Ten Play in All-Conference Band Fifty-seven members were present atthe'first business meeting of the LHS band. Band master Harold Webb made the following appointments for the 1961-62 school year: Jim Worsham, captain; Karen Carr, Margy Henderson, Bart Griffith, and Ireland Allensworth, lieutenants. The band then elected these officers: Karen Millner, secretary; Jan Thomas, treasurer; and Janet Millner, librarian. Allen Randall served as drum major for most of the marching season. The band was busy in the fall preparing halftime shows, a highlight of any football game. This season the band presented three half-time shows: Salute to Sousa, Huckleberry Hound and Wheels. The latter show also included the junior band. On October 10, the band marched at the 13th annual Mark Twain Band Marching Festival. Thirteen proved to be unlucky because the evening performance was rained out; however, the band was one of twenty-seven bands to march in the morning parade. Playing Little Brown Mambo and Happy Days Are Here Again, the LHS band led the annual Homecoming Parade as the majorettes performed in front of the band. At the Homecoming Game, the band played Unchained Melody as the queen was crowned. This year the first Quint City All-Conference Band was formed. Ten LHS band members took part in this event. They were: Ireland Allensworth, Karen Carr, Carol Culley, Ellen Elgin, Margy Henderson, Janet Millner, Pam Morrow, Diane Price, Jan Thomas, and Jim Worsham. The band took Second American Folk Rhapsody to the district contest and received a II rating. Other ratings were: trumpet trio, II; trumpet quartet, III; mixed clarinet quartet, II. In addition to activities of the band as a whole, the pep band was busy playing at all pep assemblies and home basketball games. The pep band added spirit and enthusiasm to the football and basketball seasons. The band presented an assembly for the student body April 30 and played for the awards assembly May 25. 26 Active Year for Glee Clubs The beginning of the 1961-1962 school year found M rs. Sarah Jane Branstetter, chorus director, recruiting boys to form a boys glee club. The boys glee club rose to a total membership of seventeen. The music department bought white coats which went with dark trousers and black bow ties to compose the official uniform of the boys’ glee club. The girls’ glee club increased to forty-eight members since the previous school year. The official uniform is white blouses and dark skirts. The LHS chorus performed at many different functions. Small ensembles performed at many churches in the area and at many school-sponsored activities. This year the first Quint City All-Conference Chorus was formed. Eleven LHS chorus members represented LHS in the group. They were: Pat Wickell, Charlotte Dewey, Susie White, Martha Miller, Barby Woolcott, Janet Millner, Karen Millner, Mary Lou Kilby, Dennis Goodman, Kenny Lee, and Bill Bass. Along with all of its other activities, the girls' glee club attended the district music contest at Mexico. The group received a II rating on Dona Nobis Pacem. Besides the girls' glee club, a boys’ quartet, girls' quartet, girls' trio, girls' sextet and six solos attended the meet. The two quartets and the trio received I ratings and the sextet received a n. Vocal solos which received II ratings were performed by Barby Woolcott, Bill Bass, Mike Griffith, and Dennis Goodman. Peggy Smith and Charlotte Dewey received III ratings on their solos. At the state contest, the girls' quartet and the girls' trio received III ratings. The boys' quartet was unable to attend. Martha Miller, Ara Lewellen, and Bill Bass took piano solos to the district contest. Martha and Ara received I ratings and Bill received a II rating. At the state contest Martha received a I rating and Ara received a II. We take this opportunity to thank Mrs. Sarah Jane Branstetter for her fine work with the vocal music department during the past two years. Working on short notice many times, she always came up with an entertaining program for the listeners. A fine job such as this deserves commendation. They involved the entire family in a mystery; but, with the help of an eleven-year-old girl who got her answers from horror magazines, they solved the mystery, and the play ended happily. May 24, 1962--Commencement Sixty-seven seniors said good-bye to Louisiana High School Thursday evening, May 24, 1962, when they were handed their diplomas. Above, Joe Ed Luck receives his diploma from R-II School Board President Burdell Millner. Mr. Whitener, a dynamic speaker, gave an inspiring talk which was enjoyed and praised by all those present. In the picture at left, Mr. Whitener is speaking from a lectern which was presented to the school by the Class of 1962. The lectern was formally presented to the school by Senior Class Vice President Rex Battern on Friday morning, May 25 at the Awards Assembly. The Bulldog's grid season was a very successful one this year. When the season started Coach William Cunningham had only a handful of letterrrien with whom to work. The job of putting together a good team was difficult, but when September 8 came along, the following boys were announced as being the probable starters against Wentzville that night: Jim Bopp and Jerry Blackwell, ends; Kirk Klemme and Carl Littren, tackles; George Douglas and Bob Rue, guards; Bob Campbell, center; Jon Millner, quarterback; Bob Brick and Lonnie Sutton, halfbacks; Tom Camara, fullback. The lineup remained basically the same throughout the season. On occasion Robert Gardner and Donnie Turner started at tackle and halfback respectively. Other reserves seeing action were: Rex Battern and Dick Marcellus, guards; Richard Barnum, tackle; Kenny Oliver, end; Randy DeVerger, halfback. In the first game the Bulldogs overcame Wentzville, which was a good sign. Then the team went on to Pittsfield and was beaten by a slim margin. Mark Twain was defeated handily in the first home game of the season followed by a disheartening loss to McCooey in Hannibal. The next Friday the Bulldogs were deadlocked with Shelbina at Shelbina. Monroe City was easily taken in the next home game. 42 Then on Friday, October 20, the crowning touch was added. A very strong Centralia team was beaten by the Bulldogs in our Homecoming Game. Palmyra became the Bulldog's next victim. In the season finale the Missouri Military Academy defeated the Bulldogs. The victory over Centralia was probably the sweetest in the past several years. The Centralia team was undefeated and un-scored upon in conference play previous to the game. Not only did the Bulldogs rack up nineteen points against them but the Panthers were held to a single touchdown. However, due to a loss to McCooey d tie with Shelbina, Louisiana could not but tie with Shelbina for the runner-up spot. The team lost Charles Love's kicking talents for the remainder of the season when his leg was broken in the Mark Twain game. Tom Camara’s ankle was badly sprained on the first play from scrimmage in the Palmyra game. Lonnie Sutton led the backfield in rushing with the team's best yards per carry. Jim Bopp, George Douglas, Lonnie Sutton, Bob Brick, Bob Campbell made the Quint City All-Conference team. CLOCKWISE: Kenny Oliver, Bob Rue, Lonnie Sutton, Donnie Turner. 43 CLOCKWISE: Jim Bopp, Ronnie Blackwell, Jerry Blackwell, Rex Battern, Richard Barnum. Quint City Conference Co-Champs ROW ONE: Nelson Clark, manager: Tom Thomas, Dick Marcellus, Jerry Blackwell, Jerry Griffith, head statistician. ROW TWO: Basketball at L. H. S. in 1961-'62 can best be summarized as a year of team play and team hustle. The Bulldogs, neither a big nor a fast team, were a team. This fact is attested to by a 17-8 record and the Conference co-championship. The Bulldogs opened the season by playing the area's best, Vandalia's 1961 Regional Champions. Although the Bulldogs lost this contest, they showed potential and desire. Quest of the Conference Crown was begun with victories over McCooey, Shelbina, Mark Twain, Palmyra, and Centralia. A beat was taken from Conference play which resulted in a loss to Elsberry and the runner-up spot in the Louisiana Tournament. Monroe City was the next hurdle cleared by the Bulldogs. Doubtless, the highlight of the entire season was a 61-59 victory over Bowling Green,'our traditional rival and 1962 State Champion. Bob Brick, Gerry Green, Jim Bopp, JonMillner, Donnie Turner, Coach Ron Durso. This thriller was followed by wins over Monroe City and Mark Twain, and the Bulldogs placed fourth in the Bowling Green Tournament. The regional tournament was the final challenge met by the Bulldogs. After an easy first round victory, the Bulldogs finally conquered Vandalia's stubborn Indians. However, Clopton proved too strong in the semi-finals. The showdown of the Conference race ended sadly for Louisiana, as Centralia, with revenge in their eyes, outlasted the Bulldogs 61-53. This loss, followed by three straight victories, gave Louisiana one-half of the Conference Title. The Bulldogs were beaten, 49-43. Troy then ended Louisiana's season on a disappointing note by winning the third place trophy by a one point margin. The Louisiana High School Track Team had a rough season as compared to our track teams of the five previous years. The team went scoreless at State Indoor, but bounced back by winning their next three meets with Vandalia-Farber, Mark Twain and McCooey, and Pittsfield. Louisiana placed third at the Quincy Relays in a field of seventeen schools, and second in the Quint City Conference meet. This was the first time in five years that our school failed to place first in both of these meets. There was a bright spot at the Quincy Relays, however, as Tom Camara, Tom Thomas, Charlie Parker and Bill Bass set a new record in the shuttle-hurdle relay. Their record-breaking time of 50:3 seconds broke the old record of 51:4 seconds set in 1961. This was the only record broken this season. The month of May was certainly not a lucky one for the Bulldogs. It started off with a loss to Bowling Green. At the District Meet Louisiana placed fourth in a field of fifteen schools. Randy DeVerger, Jon Millner and the mile relay team qualified for state but no points were scored at the State Outdoor meet. Randy DeVerger was the only varsity track man to participate in the Mark Twain Relays. He placed fourth in the 100 yard dash and fifth in the 220 yard dash. 51 Freshman -Sophomore Track Meets April 6: Louisiana 102 1 2; Mark Twain 27; McCooey 18. Student Council Has Progressive Year The Student Council has taken an increasingly important roll in the management of L. H. S. activities. Building upon the fine record of our past councils, the council supervised traditional projects and initiated new ideas. The strength of any organization, leadership was stressed, as four council members attended the Missouri Association of Student Council's summer workshop. The four members sent, Jim Bopp, President; Bart Griffith, Vice-President; Joyce Davis, Secretary, and Bob Shields, Council member, returned from Columbia with enthusiasm and a greater knowledge of what other councils were doing, (cont. on page 58) SEATED: Georgina Vetter, Ada England. Photography Club This is the Photography Club, one of the most promising clubs in our school. This year being under the excellent leadership of Durward Sizemore, and sponsored by Mr. Coxsey, our Photo Club proved rewarding as well as interesting. At the beginning of the year we increased our skill in developing and printing pictures. Also we studied the art of taking pictures, and at the end of school we took a field trip for a study of scenery photography. Money-making projects this year included a bake sale and the sale of pictures taken on the school campus. OFFICERS: Karen Millner, secretary-treasurer; Durward Sizemore, president; Karen Carr, vice president; Jim Cleeton, reporter; Mr. Richard Coxsey, sponsor. After conducting the opening day assembly, the council prepared for one of the biggest weekends in the school year, Homecoming. Several minor changes were made in the usual homecoming procedure, but our school's spirit remained at its high peak; the weekend was a splendid success. The activities of the council didn't slacken as Christmas neared: a Christmas assembly brought the student body a spiritual message as well as the joy of carols sung by the music department. When the students returned from vacation, they found the council busily preparing for our annual basketball tournament. Perhaps the most significant project undertaken by the council was the formation of the Quint-City Conference Student Council. This council consists of the schools in our conference. The purpose of the conference council, which meets three times a year, is to better relations among area schools and to discuss mutual school problems. Interest was shown by the council in obtaining a foreign exchange student for our school through the American Field Service. The scope of this project, for it includes the entire community, prevented the council's procurement of a student for the '62-'63 school year. However, the ground-work was laid for the program, which should be carried out by a future council. Realizing no organization can function without financial support, the council sponsored an allschool work day in April. The final project instituted by the council was an assembly before the student body explaining the work of the council and thanking the students for their unfailing support. F.F.A. Has Banquet to Honor Parents The blue and gold jackets of the Louisiana Chapter of the Future Farmers of America are mingled throughout the student body. The Louisiana chapter has twenty-two members with the advisor, Mr. Robert L. Smith. Throughout the year they have many activities. In October or November the annual Barnwarming Dance is held. At the Barnwarming the F.F.A. King and Queen are crowned. In April or May the F.F.A. has its annual Parent-Son Banquet. At this banquet the new officers are installed, and awards to members and to people from the community are presented. These two activities are the highlights of the F.F.A. year. The members have also taken many trips. The longest is the trip to Kansas City, Missouri and the National F.F.A. Convention. The F.F.A. is a national organization for boys studying vocational agriculture. Nationally there are three hundred and eighty thousand F.F.A. members. Twenty-two members of the Louisiana Chapter play their part in making their organization a bigger and better one in which to participate. Under the leadership of Karen Millner, President; Sudy York, Vice-president, Diane Price, Secretary; and Ara Lewellen, Treasurer, the Pep Squad added interest to Homecoming activities by sponsoring a Crazy Day preceding the Homecoming football game. On this day the students portrayed their favorite television, radio, and storybook characters. This event caused much enthusiasm among the students, and we hope that it will become an annual event. The Pep Squad nominated Sudy York as a candidate for the queenship of the Bowling Green Tournament. With the loyal support of the Pep Squad and Bulldog fans, Sudy won the honorable title. Perhaps the most distinquishing symbol of this year's Pep Squad is the bright shiny trophy which they won at the Bowling Green Tournament. The Pep Squad would like to thank its sponsors. The activities of the year have been many and varied. The club enjoyed films of France and other historic countries in Europe, learned many fun songs, played French games of cards and bingo, heard French tapes, and enjoyed skits put on by members of the French Club. The yearly money-making project was selling homemade candy at the tournament. One hundred and thirteen dollars profit was realized. Again, as last year, a float was entered in the Homecoming Parade. The last activity of the year was a picnic in May. French scrapbooks were the term project of French 1. There were only twelve members. The sponsors were Miss Lois Hastings, Mrs. Kenneth Morrow, Mrs. Kermit Schaper, Mr. Richard Coxey, and Mr. Franklin Smith. The purpose of the Society is to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage the development of character in students of L.H.S. A member must be a Junior or Senior. Sophomores are eligible as probationary members. All must maintain a scholastic average of 85%. All members are given the national pin bearing the emblem of the burning torch. Officers are: Diane Price, president; Kay Shive, vice president; Karen Millner, secretary; Roberta Smith, treasurer.. Members Teach Classes The 1961-'62 school year was the sixth year of organization for the Socrates Club, Future Teachers of America, one of the school's most outstanding clubs. This was our second year under the National Education Charter. Three members attended the State Teacher's convention in November of 1961. To get experience, the members had the opportunity to teach in various classes; several times the members were called upon to act as substitutes. Our membership increased this year from 23 to 26 members. Uses Point System Hey, look how many points I have now—125 T This is just one of the many remarks that could be heard at our F. H. A. meetings this year. The points are earned for performing certain activities. Each member tries to earn 150 points a year in order to get her coveted F. H. A. pen. This system of point-keeping is very successful as it performs a two-fold duty: (1) It gives the girls the incentive to work; (2) Because the girls work hard, our organization prospers, the girls learn, and we become better citizens—one of F. H. A.'spurposes. This year we had a simple, but very successful, way of keeping an accurate record of the points earned by each member. We constructed a huge chart, wrote each member's name on it, and hung it on the wall in the Home Ec. room where most of our meetings are held. Before each meeting, each girl would tell the Official Chart Keeper what duties she had performed, and the keeper would then place a different symbol by the girl's name for each activity. The symbols stood for a certain number of points, and a key to explain the symbols was placed at the bottom of the chart. In this way, each girl could keep an accurate record of her own points as well as knowing how many more points she needed. This chart, simple as it was, has been an asset to our organization. It is only one example of the working ingenuity of the FUTURE HOMEMAKERS OF AMERICA. STANDING: Miss Jane Vaughn, The 1962 A Controversi Aggressiveness was the byword as the 1962 ALAMO Staff embarked on a year of hard work. A very successful advertising campaign was held in the summer and fall of 1961, and an equally successful sales campaign was held in the spring of 1962. Because of the success of the advertising campaign, the price of the yearbook to the students was reduced, but the quality of the book increased greatly. The cover and the division pages were designed by Jim Ulry. This is the first time that color has been used in a Louisiana High School annual. There was much controversy concerning the changes made in the annual this year. Many of these changes are noticeable. Examples of major changes are nearly a complete reversal of the order of the book; omission of the ALAMO King and ALAMO Rosalee Smith, R. J. Brick, Jon Millner, Carl Littrell, Jim Bopp, Rex Battern, Ellen Elgin, Kay Shive, Roberta Smith. ALAMO-al Yearbook Queen, which were replaced by a Senior King and Senior Queen; and the change in the base color of the cover—from traditional red or white to black with red and white applied. Much of the success of this annual can be attributed to the merchants of Louisiana whose support made possible many of the extra features of this book. (Editor's note: I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Mike Slater, our official photographer, for his time, effort, and materials. They were greatly appreciated. Thanks should also be extended to the Press Journal Publishing Company for materials and publicity. So proud of the fact that they were highschoolers, the Class of '65 spent their entire first meeting electing officers. The capable ones chosen were: Kenny Oliver, President; Butch Wetzel, Vice-President; and John A. Luck, Secretary-Treasurer. Nancy Oliver and Jack Littrell proved to be valuable assets to the Student Council, from the Freshman class. As Homecoming time approached, the Freshmen swung into action. They created a huge mixmaster captioned with Let's Beat 'Em. The class had their party on Friday, April 13th and the theme, Bad Luck, was well carried out in decorations, entertainment, and refreshment. We had finally made it! ”E Pluribus Unum” became our motto, and we began at once to continue laying the foundation for a star-studded high school career. The Sophomores displayed zest and enthusiasm in all they undertook. To guide the large class successfully through the year, the Sophomores elected competent class officers: Carl Littrell, president; Mary Lou Kilby, vice-president; Lois Wilson, secretary; Pat Brown, treasurer; Terry Prechter, parliamentarian; and Pam Morrow, historian and highlights reporter. Adding greatly to the efficiency of the student council, Jerry Griffith and Jane Rule represented our class. To celebrate the mighty Bulldogs’victorious basketball season, the Sophomores sponsored a sock hop. The theme centered around the fast-moving, smooth-playing Bulldogs, who had given the spectators a great season. The Sophomore social whirl began with a Roaring 20 s class party. The ingenious Sophs over exerted themselves and made this a fun-filled, frolicsome night to remember. The class of 64 displayed their zest and zeal by taking an active part in the Homecoming festivities. After diligent working and planning, we created a prize-winning float (not only in our opinion, but also the judges, for we won second place). We showed cooperation and unity while working on our float, and we also had a ball. No class is complete without sponsors to lend a helping hand whenever necessary, and we had the best! Mrs. Griffith, Miss Hastings, and Mr. Franklin Smith gave us moral and physical support whenever we were in need. We wish to thank our sponsors for all their guidance and aid. Juniors Stage Underwater” Banquet and Prom The Juniors are very proud today that this year was a truly successful one. Everyone pitched in to make this possible. At the beginning of the year the following officers were elected: President, Marilyn Knaus; Vice-president, Dick Marcellus; Secretary, Karen Millner; Treasurer, Diane Price. Judging by the class record, the officers were quite apt and performed their duties well. Various work campaigns were launched during the year to raise money for the all-important prom. The most profitable venture was taking over the food stand at the annual basketball tournament. A great deal of hard work was involved, but the results merited the toil. The Juniors sponsored many dances during the year. These included the Jingle Bell Hop, a Roaring Twenties Dance, and, of course, one of the best and most original proms and banquets ever to be presented to the departing Seniors. The prom's theme for this year was Underwater. The ceiling of the gymnasium was lowered with aqua and lime green streamers and many spangled fish were suspended from them. Fish murals were placed on the walls; in the center of the room was a treasure chest overflowing with gold coins and jewels. Perhaps the most talked about feature was a huge pink and white clam shell in which the band was sitting. The over-all effect was one of an underwater paradise. Senior Class H istory In September 1958, the Class of 1962 entered Louisiana High School. The class officers for the first year were Carolyn Gillett, president; Charlotte Elliott, secretary; and Kay Shive, treasurer. Our class float won second place in the Homecoming parade. As sophomores we chose Jon Millner as president, Tom Treece as vice president, and Rosalee Smith as secretary-treasurer. During this year we sponsored the April Fools Dance, which was formerly the April Love Dance, and initiated the Sadie Hawkins Dance. This was the year our class first won first place in the Homecoming parade for our unusual float. Tom Treece was brought forth to lead the junior class in its various activities. Other class officers were Kay Shive, vice president; Roberta Smith, secretary; and Billy Naxera, treasurer. Phyllis Bono served as chairman of the Banquet-Prom Committee. The theme of the event was Cinderella.” Also during our junior year we sponsored the Sadie Hawkins Dance. Again our class float took first place in the Homecoming parade. Finally we reached our senior year at Louisiana High School. We started off the year by electing Bob Brick as Class President. Rex Battern was in the political spotlight as Vice-President; as were Janet Millner and Bill Naxera as Class Secretary and Treasurer respectively. Largely through the efforts of all the members of the class, we advanced far above the ordinary financial balances of the previous classes. We were money-mad from the beginning. Through the combination of our bake sales, our sock hops, our chili and hot dog stands, our Sadie Hawkins Dances, our Prom, and especially our Senior Play, Finders Creepers, we were suddenly stricken ill by financial wizarditis, a common disease among those who strive and succeed. Again this year we sponsored the Sadie Hawkins Dance, which we willed to the Class of 1964. For the third straight year, our entry in the Homecoming parade won first place. We give a special thanks to our sponsors, Mr. Don Giltner, Mr. Richard Coxsey, and Mrs. Ellen Morrow, for their service above and beyond the call of duty. 90 Seniors IRELAND ALLENSWORTH RICHARD BARNUM REX BATTERN GERALD WILLARD BOOTH KATHERINE E.
