Mullen, Football The Bulldogs started their season Sept. 16, when they played Pittsfield on our own home ground and took a very hard loss at the hands of the Indians. This loss seemed to fire the Bulldogs to a string of victories because they won the next four games starting with La Plata and then polished off McCooey in a hard fought game. The next victim was on the Homecoming night for the Bulldogs and their spirit was at a high pitch. The Bulldogs beat a very good team that was slated to romp over them. The Shelbina team fought to the last, but they just couldn't compete with the conference-minded Bulldogs. 44 Monroe City gave the Bulldogs1 team a hard time before they went to pieces under a heavy attack from the Louisiana team. The Centralia team showed what makes them a conference winning team year after year. Their heavy team rolled over the Bulldogs in a crushing defeat that ended all conference hopes of the Bulldogs. The loss to Centralia fired the Bulldogs to beat the Palmyra team in a one-sided victory. This gave them second place berth in the conference. Due to injuries the last two games were a bit one-sided. In the Louisiana-Wentzville game, Jon Millner broke his wrist and left the Bulldogs without a second-string quarterback. In the same game Steve Foland received a slight concussion and then the Bulldogs were without any quarterback at all. In the game with Mexico the lack of a quarterback gave us another defeat. Tom Camera, Don Lewis, Charles Boyd, Larry Patrick, and Bob Brick were on the conference All-Star first team. Herb Griffith, Lonnie Sutton, and Doug Mullen made the second team. The Bulldogs had an overall 19-10 record for the season. The team entered four tournaments: Clopton, Bowling Green, The Regional at Vandalia-Farber, and the Louisiana Tournament. The team placed third at Clopton, fourth at Bowling Green, second in the regional, and won the Louisiana tournament for the first time in twenty-two years. The Bulldogs finished in a tie for second in the conference as they were beaten only three times. The festivities began on Thursday night with the parade in which the classes and organizations entered gaily decorated floats. The Junior entry, ’’Let’s See You Worm Your Way Out Of This One”, was the winning float. The Senior Class float, which won second place, is pictured above. The Senior Float was titled ”Watch Us Win.” The French Club entry, ’’Vive Les Bulldogs,” was the third place winner. The prizes of $10, $7.50, and $5.00 were awarded by the L.H.S. Student Council who were the sponsors of the Homecoming festivities. 56 On Friday night, the halftime was devoted to crowning the queen, Miss Kathy Woods. The ceremonies began with the L.H.S. band marching on to the field to form a heart around the throne. The band then played Unchained Melody” while the attendants and their escorts made their appearance before the royal throne in anticipation of the queen. First to make their appearance were the Freshman attendants, Jane Rule and Lois Wilson who were escorted by John Ray and Carl Litrell. The sophomore attendants were Marilyn Knaus and Sueanne Collier escorted by Bob Campbell and Dave Whities. Next came the Junior attendants, Melany Runyan and Janet Millner, escorted by Tom Camera and Bob Brick. The Senior attendants were Sandra Rule and Charlotte Wood escorted by Joe Wells and Steve Foland. The trainbearers for the queen were Misses Dinah Mullen and Tasha Smith. Queen Kathy was crowned by the football co-captains Larry Patrick and Don Lewis. 57 The final event was the homecoming dance where the queen and her attendants reigned supreme. On October 29, 1960 the Future Farmers of America held their annual Barnwarming Dance. The theme of the dance this year was Halloween. The room was decorated with bales of straw for seats , corn stalks, skeletons, scarecrows, jack-o-lanterns, and cats. Several games were played after which the costumes were judged. Prizes were given. Pat Smith won the prize for the best costume and Judy Glenn and Morris Patrick won the prize for best dressed couple. The highlight of the evening was the crowning of the 1960 Barnwarming Queen, Miss Judy Glenn. She was escorted by Morris Patrick and was crowned by Larry Patrick. The Freshman attendant was Miss Francis Ward escorted by Charles Brown. Sophomore attendant was Miss Karen Millner escorted by J. C. Kerly. The Junior attendant was Miss Phyllis Bono escorted by Martin Schambach. Senior attendant was Miss Karen Kelly escorted by Herb Griffith. After being crowned Miss Glenn was presented with the traditional white sweetheart jacket. After the coronation more games were played and the square dancing continued. 58 F.H.A. Mardi G The fun, romance and gaiety of New Orleans transformed Meriwether all-purpose room into a beautiful ballroom when the Louisiana F.H.A. Chapter presented their Mardi Gras Dance. Decorated with ’’Walls” of flowing streamers of many hues and clusters of many vivid balloons, one could easily imagine himself at the most famous carnival in all the United States. Of course, Mardi Gras must be celebrated with a King and Queen and our Mardi Gras was no exception. The Royal couple and their court had been chosen by ballot by the entire student body and their identity had been kept secret until the coronation. As Jene Carr announced, Rosalee Smith and Ada Lee England escorted the happy winners to the throne area. The court attendants were: Freshmen, John Ray and Mary Lou Kilby; Sophomores, Suanne Collier and Randy DeVerger; Juniors, Jim Bopp and Janet Millner; Seniors, Barbara Thomas and Joe Wells. Then a fanfare of applause greeted the royal couple as their names were revealed. Sandra Rule made a radiant queen and Bill Davidson looked every bit the king he was. Roberta Smith, president of the F.H.A., crowned the royal couple and presented each with their crowns as a momento of the occasion. As the royal court danced, confetti filled the air in celebration. 59 The Crowning The King Enters Junior-Senior Prom A Royal Dance Sonny! 60 Prom Upon entering the auditorium of the High School, all juniors, seniors, and their escorts were announced. The soft, gentle music of Sonny Lefholz and his orchestra greeted them as they walked down the crepe paper draped steps. The theme for the Prom and banquet was Cinderella. The auditorium was justly decorated in royal purple and white crepe paper. The walls were covered with authentic looking shields, all drawn by Albert Niffen. The scattered tables were set with small baskets of purple and white flowers. The highlight of the prom was the crowning of Prince Charming, Roger Gunning, and Cinderella, Louise Hobkirk. Jerry Griffith announced their coming as the orchestra played, ’’When You Wish Upon a Star. Cinderella and Prince Charming wfere preceeded to the throne by the crown bearers, Diana Mullen and Johnny Swett. Cinderella, Louise Hobkirk, escorted by Tom Treece, and Prince Charming, Roger Gunning, escorted by Kay Shive, ascended the thrones, spotlighted in front of the orchestra. Cinderella and Prince Charming were crowned by their escorts and they then danced as the orchestra played their song. 61 Senior Play One of the highlights of the school year was the Senior Play. The Seniors choose as their play f,The Night Of January The 16th by the well known writer Ayn Rand. Helping the seniors with their project was Mrs. Bennet Mullen who directed the play. It could be said that the play had a very successful run. There were two performances of the play; one in the afternoon for the student body and an evening performance open to the public. The Night of January The 16th was a murder trial concerning the death of one financial genius and his secretary is to have killed him. Judy Glenn played the part of the secretary. Steve Foland the Prosecuting Attorney, and Ray Krigbaum was the defense council. Out of town activities for the band included the thirteenth annual Mark Twain Marching Festival at Hannibal in October and the American Legion Parade on Veterans' Day at St. Charles. At the latter we won first place as the best marching band in the parade. In December the Concert Band presented their annual Christmas Concert. The Spring Concert was given April 28th. At the District Music Festival held in Mexico, Missouri on April 7th, the band received a II rating. Ensembles participating in this contest were the clarinet quartet and the saxophone quartet. Both ensembles received II ratings. Piano solos were given by Judy Glenn who received a II and Billy Bass with a I rating. Due to illness of one of its members the saxophone sextet did not compete. Members of the saxophone quartet are Ellen Elgin, Theo Stark, Ray Krigbaum and Ann Taliaferro. The saxophone sextet was composed of Theo Stark, Ellen Elgin, Ann Taliaferro, Frances Ward, Ray Krigbaum and Mike Griffith. We also sent three of our council members, Ara Lewellen, Karen Millner and Carl Littrell to the Missouri Association of Student Councils held at Crystal City, Missouri. Our Homecoming this year was one of the best we have ever had and was not due only to our victory over Shelbina. The National Honor Society and an Honor Study Hall was started in our school by the council for the intellectual minded. In the field of dramatics an exchange assembly with Clopton and the beginning of a dramatics club was initiated. A photography club was also chartered this year. Photography Club . The Louisiana Highlights Staff of 1960-T61 had a very busy year. There were an exceptional number of events which were covered by the Highlights Staff of this year. The Editor was Jon Millner and assistant Editors were Roberta Smith and Shirley Niffen. The Louisiana Press Journal gave the members of the Staff cards which certified that they were members of the Missouri Newswriters Association, Inc. This is the first year a program of this type has been carried out. 72 Future Teachers off America The 1960-f61 school year was the fifth year of organization for the Socrates Club of the Future Teachers of America and its first year under a National Education Association charter. The officers for the ’60-'61 year were: President, Ray Krigbaum; Vice president, Jim Worsham; Secretary, Judith Glenn; Treasurer, Doug Mullen. Our Sponsors were Mr. Phil Williams and Mr. James A. Woolcott. This year our membership increased from 19 to 23 members. We had one of our most active years in which our members helped with pre-school enrollment, substituted for elementary teachers and helped in various other capacities. Each month the Club was privileged to have a guest speaker who gave an interesting talk or showed slides of some subject usually connected with the teaching field. The year was officially ended with the steak barbeque at Sunset Park on May 18. There will be ten seniors leaving the F.T.A. and we hope there will be 20 more prospective members to take their place. Members: Billy Bass, Jim Cleeton, Vallie Davis, Butch Elgin, Ellen Elgin, Ada England, Judy Glenn, Roger Gunning, Margy Henderson, Ray Krigbaum, Marilyn Miller, Martha Miller, Janet Millner, Karen Mi liner, Doug Mullen, Karen Oliver, Sandra Rule, Sara Shuford, Paul Smith, Skeeter Triplett, Jim Worsham, Theo Stark, Chuck Lewellen, and Karen Carr. 73 Future Homemakers off America The year of 1960-’61 was a very busy year for the Louisiana F.H.A. Chapter. Under the leadership of President Roberta Smith the organization accomplished much. Her officers were: First Vice President, Jene Carr: Second Vice President, Janet Millner; Secretary, Sandra Holman; Treasurer, Cheryl Walker; Historian, Janie Patrick; Program Chairman, Ada Lee England; Pariamentarian, Joyce Smith; Song Leader, Paula Bruce; Reporter, Carolyn Kritz. Our advisor was Mrs. Betty Artus, Chapter mothers were Mrs. Crosby Carr, Mrs. Kermit Schaper, and Mrs. Arthur Conners. Each month we were busy with some project. Our calendar showed this clearly. September: A picnic for the members and officers was held at the President’s home to plan for the coming year. Mr. and Mrs. Bennat Mullens were the honored guests. Initiation followed the opening of school. The theme was story book characters. For one day of school the new members protrayed Little Miss Moffit, Little Bo Peep and many others. October: Fourteen members attended the Regional Meeting at Van-Farber. Roberta Smith presented a skit written by Mrs. Artus entitled ”If Little Red Riding Hood Had Taken Home Economics.” Roberta was the hands and head of a large doll. Homecoming had the chapter working on their float. Judy Jefferies posed as a gypsy who, looking into her crystal ball, said to the crowd, ”1 foresee a Victory.” 74 F.H.A. Officers November: Bulldog sweatshirt were in style! Why? The F.H.A. girls sold them as their fall moneymaking project. More money was made off this than any other project. December: A Christmas party was given for the underprivileged children in the lower grades. Gifts were given by F.H.A. girls. January: The coming of the basketball season also meant the coming of money into the Treasury. Soda was sold during all the home games and a very successful restaurant was operated in the Home Ec. Room during the Louisiana Tournament (The one we won!). February: Rosalee Smith was elected by regional chapters as Regional Treasurer for 1961-'62, a big honor for the chapter as well as Rosalee. March: The F.H.A. sponsored a highly successful Mardi Gras Dance. A real festive atmosphere complete with a Mardi Gras King and Queen made it a wonderful dance. April: The Annual Spring Style Show was presented by Home Ec. Girls to the Louisiana High School and Grade School P.T.A. May: Installation of new officers for the 1961-f62 year ended our activities. Mrs. W. H. Smith was awarded an honorary membership pin for her help during the year. The Outstanding Future Homemaker was announced at the Awards Assembly. Rosalee Smith represented the chapter on the Alamo Staff. 75 F.F.A The Louisiana Chapter of the F.F.A. had seven junior members and eighteen senior members. Activities of the F.F.A. included meetings twice a month, trips to National and State Conventions, judging contest, the annual Parent-Son Banquet, and several other special projects. The Louisiana F.F.A. is one of the most active organizations in the high school. The F.F.A. sponsors a Barn Warming Dance and an assembly program in honor of national F.F.A. week. In the assembly program the F.F.A. informs the student body of the work which is being carried out by the local chapter. The President of the Louisiana F.F.A. last year was Morris Patrick and their sponsor was Mr. Bob Smith. 76 The L.H.S. Pep Squad of the '60-T61 season began with an enrollment of approximately 65 girls. The officers chosen were Sissy Taliaferro, President; Sudy York, Secretary; and Sandra Rule, Treasurer. The activities of the club included participation in the homecoming activities, maintaining a stand at the tournament, and attending all games and meetings. The uniforms chosen for the year were red pleated skirts and white blouses. Mr. Donald Giltner is to be given much credit for his work with the pep squad as its sponsor. 77 The pep squad also salutes its fine cheerleaders. A Team Cheerleaders are: Sudy York, Gayle Collier, Barbara Thomas, Sissy Taliaferro, Mickie Moffit, and Jo Ann Ulry. ”B” Team Cheerleaders are: Lois Wilson, Patsy Brown, Glenda Richardson, Vickie Greenlee, Cathy Brick, and Sharon Betts. 78 L” Club FIRST ROW: Mr. Blais, Herb Griffith, Lonnie Sutton, Butch Elgin, Steve Smith, Frank Holliday, Jon Millner, Tom Thomas, Fred Brldwell, Coach Cunningham. THIRD ROW: Morris Patrick, Joe Wells, Nellis Danner, Gerald Beer,Carey Turner, Bill Leverington, Cary Rohr, Doug Mullen, Bob Brick. The L Club is composed of members who have lettered in a major sport and have completed the initiation exercises. There were ten new- members last year but seventeen of the members were Seniors and will be lost. The L Club and the Senior boys played the faculty in a benefit basketball game which the faculty won. The L Club got double revenge however by beating the faculty in two softball games. The officers were: Don Lewis, President; Jon Millner, Vice-President; and Bob Brick, Secretary- 79 Treasurer. French Club SEATED: Shirly Niffen, Tom Thomas, Cheryl Walker, Jim Bopp, Kay Shive, Judy Glenn, Bill Sheppard, Louise Hobkirk, Durward Sizemore, Karen Kelly. The French Club embarked energetically on its first year of activeness as an L.H.S. organization by entering an original and attractive float in the Homecoming Parade. The 20-foot Arc de Triomphe won third place, a prize of $5. The year's officers were elected the preceding spring and were: President, Judy Glenn; Secretary-Treasurer, Kay Shive; and Reporter, Bill Sheppard. Sponsor was French teacher, Mrs. Kermit Schaper. The objective of the club is to further the practical knowledge of the French student of France as a country in conjunction with his study of the language. During the year the club heard French Records, 80 French Club Officers studied short French stories, learned French games, wrote to French pen pals, discussed plans to lay the ground work for coming years, and wrote a constitution. Jim Bopp, a member of the trench II class, was the author of the new constitution, which was accepted with a few minor revisions. The club’s major money-making project, a tournament homemade candy concession was most successful. Another project, an end-of-the-year picnic, is to be an annual affair. The club participated in the dual exchange assemblies by presenting two short French skits with their translations on a vaudeville scroll roller, and a special French song by Karen Kelly. Both classes took the National standardized French examinations, the winners of which were Annice Schaper and Judy Glenn. The term French projects were different for the two classes. The French I class prepared extensive and attractive notebooks on France for which awards were presented. Linda Jo Davis won the prize for the most original scrapbook, one made circularly with much original art work. Pam Morrow received the award for the best overall book. The French II class did research papers on themes that varied from the history of French government to French chateaus. These projects worked in conjunction with the club objective of improving and extending one’s knowledge of France. 8 t Photography Club The L.H.S. Photography Club finally became an official school organization in February by electing Durward Sizemore as its president. During the year the club had as its guest many individuals who spoke to the members of different aspects of photography. The club members not only learned about the interesting things that can be done with photography but also learned about fields connected with photography. One of the most important of the activities was the creating of a photography lab. Plans have already been made for field trips and many more exciting projects for those who express an interest in photography. The Photo Club would like to thank Mr. Slater, the local photographer, for his kind assistance. STANDING: Jtm Cleeton, Dave Whities, Butch Elgin, Paul Smith, Herb Griffith, Joe Wells, Roger Gunning.
