YOUNGS FERNE ROBERTS VICKIE LOGAN These Were Our Seniors ? ? BUTCH GRIFFITH JIM YORK RITA MOORE LOUISE STERNE SANDY SITTON JERRY SMITH CAROLYN PENN RONNIE KELLY LORNA DAY SHOP Senior Prophecy Seniors of 1960 While walking down a lonely road; Thinking of old L.H.S. Into the cemetery I strolled; Where lie my friends at rest. As I stood by the tombstones, I read, The story of my classmates long dead. As I entered the cemetery gates I saw first, the tombstone Aevelyn Ayers, who tripped and fell into an open grave. Next, I came to the marker of Joe Bowman, a policeman, who was killed in a gun fight with gangsters. Not far away lay Carolyn Branstetter, who died of an acute appendicitis. Beside Carolyn was the final resting place of Joyce Branstetter. Poor Joyce had an overdose of bleach. As I traveled on, I came to Bette Braxton, who fell out of her chair and broke her neck while sleeping in English class. Joyce Calvin was next, God rest her soul. Joyce died of a severe case of the hiccups. Farther up the road was buried Ed Camara, who drowned swimming the river to Running Bear. Then came Golda Cannon, poor girl, who was strangled by her own hair. Margaret Clarke came next. She fell in a sewer ditch on the way to her wedding. I proceeded on to find Phyllis Copher, who died of boredom after her 21st child. Next, I read that Betty Davis, while standing at attention in the Marines, died of embarrassment when her girdle snapped. After that shocking news I found out that Diane DeYong was swept off her feet by a swamp angel. Not far away I came to the grave of Annette Farris. She just plain died. Butch Griffith was shot by Sudy York when she became tired of playing second fiddle to a carburetor. J. W. Griffith was torn to pieces by a creature from the barnyard. Then there was Louise Hill, who fell out of a basement window, was shot four times with a pea shooter, strangled with wet spaghetti and keeled over in shock. Mack Jennings was not far. On a day not long ago, Mr. Williams and Mack were playing Russian roulette. Guess who lost. Goodbye, Mack. Then I saw the tombstone of Ronnie Kelly and on it read, died of severe stomach pains after eating green cheese from the moon. The last remains of Jim Leeds lay only a few feet away. This poor disillusioned boy died of a heart attack when he found out there was no Santa Claus. As I traveled on my way I came to Vicki Logan. Her father caught her smoking, and she choked on the filter. Then came Jane Menefee, who was hun over by a white bulldozer. Not far was Rita Moore. This sentimental girl drowned in her own tears. Sam Morris, while in medical school was mistaken for a cadaver. Then I learned that Carolyn Penn, enjoying herself at a party, was hit in the head with a flying champagne cork. Carolyn Price fell out of an upstairs window while staring across the street. I walked on and found Glen Randal, who suffocated after being locked in the bookkeeping room. Robbyn Ringhausen was next in line. She died of complications after being run through the duplicating machine by Miss Hastings. Feme Roberts passed on with her head caught in the bell of her saxophone. Another tombstone read, Fred Rottman died of unknown causes, in an unknown place, at an unknown time, with unknown people around.” I then learned that Sandy Sitton died of frustration trying to find the right car on Georgia Street. Rebel Jerry Smith was shot when found to be a Confederate spy. Next came Kay Stephens. This poor girl was trampled by a herd of wild pigs. As I continued on my way I came to the grave of Mike Stephens, who caught his head in a drainage pipe. Louise Sterne was only a short distance away. She was scared to death by a hoot” owl. Next, I came to Sandra Turner, who got her head caught in a basketball goal while making a heroic attempt to retrieve the ball. .Another of my classmates, Tom Vetter, was run over by a herd of turtles. The next marker read, Steve Waite died of silence.” Lona Wallace was executed for the murder of her husband, Tom. Then I came to Kenneth Ward, whose vocal cords snapped while trying to win the national pig calling contest. Next came Terry Weaver who was sucked into a milking machine. The next classmate I came to was Donna Willard. Her little red kiddy car was just too much for her. I walked a little farther and came to the resting place of Harold Wilson. Charlotte pulled the string around her little finger just a little too tight. Dick Woodfield got his ears caught in a moving elevator. On the next tombstone I read that Phyllis Woodward, while trying to elope, climbed out of the wrong window. Jim York, one of my little classmates, was playing Tarzan and the grape vine broke. Tom Gamble, one of my fellow students for which there is no tombstone, disappeared; and it is not known what happened to him. However, we the long gone class of 1960 feel that, because he was always tardy in school, he will be the last to join us in our happy resting place. 17 Graduates FIRST ROW: Evelyn Ayers, Betty Davis, Sandra Turner, Robbyn Ringhausen, Annette Farris, Ed Camera, Dick Woodfield, Sam Morris, Kay Stevens, Margaret Clark, Louise Sterne, Feme Roberts, Carolyn Price. Quite a few of our Sophomores participated in F. F. A , F. H. A., and in the Band, Glee Club, and Pep Squad. Five Sophomore girls were on the Bullette basketball team. The Alamo Sophomore section editor was Sandy Sitton At the end of our Sophomore year in high school, our class had decreased in size from approximately eighty green Freshmen to fifty-six Sophomores, or future Juniors. Well, there we were, a little bit older and, we hoped, a little wiser as we entered our Junior year at L. H. S. Our very able sponsors were Mrs. George Daniel and Mr. Aaron Hemphill. Oar class officers were: Jim Leeds, president; Sandy Sitton, vice-president; Vicki Logan, secretary-treasurer; and Shirley Windmiller, student council representative. On May 16, 1959, the class sponsored the Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom. The theme of the banquet and prom was Sayonara. Quite a number of Juniors joined in the extracurricular activities that year. There were eight Junior boys participating in football, four boys in basketball, and six boys on the track team. There were nine Junior girls on the Bullette basketball team. Cheerleaders from the Junior class were Rita Moore and Robbyn Ringhausen. Various money-making projects were also undertaken our Junior year. The Highlights reporter was Vicki Logan, and the Alamo section editor was Sandy Sitton. Sandy was also the Highlights Editor, with Kay Stephens as Assistant Editor. Last, but not least, our final year—honorable, sophisticated Seniors! (At least that’s what they told us!) We began our last year with forty-seven members. Our class sponsors were Mrs. Ellen Morrow, Principal George Daniel, and Mr. Philip Williams. Our class officers were: Vicki Logan, president; Lona Dewey, vice-president; Sandy Sitton, secretary; Feme Roberts, treasurer; and Harold Wilson, student council representative. Lona Dewey was the Senior Barnwarming attendant and was escorted by Hardy Wilson. Sam Morris, crowned by Sandy Sitton, the F. H. A. President, represented our class as Valentine King of the Sweetheart Dance. Sam was also escorted by Sandy. The Senior Prince was Butch Griffith, escorted by Carolyn Penn. Senior boys who made the football teams were: Jim York, Jim Leeds, Skip Beadle, Dick Woodfield, Mike Stephens, Steve Waite, and Ed Camara. Senior boys on the Bulldog basketball teams were: Harold Wilson, Dick Woodfield, Butch Griffith, and Sam Morris. The Senior girls on the Bullette basketball team were: Diane DeYong, Bette Braxton, Carolyn Branstetter, Carolyn Penn, Joyce Calvin, Sandra Turner, Rita Moore, and Sandy Sitton. All the Senior girls played on the A team. Money-making projects for our Senior year were: bake sales, concession stands at the football and basketball games and tournament, coat-check stand, and the Senior Variety Show. Jim York honored the Senior Class by serving a very good term as Student Council President. The Highlights reporter was Sandy Sitton. The Alamo Senior section editor was also Sandy Sitton. During the course of our four years in high school at L. H. S., we lost approximately twenty-three members of our class. Two of our girls, who had gotten married, continued through school and completed their high school education. Our class almost always had a good turnout in organizations such as F. H. A., F. F. A., F. T. A., Pep Squad, Glee Club, L Club, as well as in all the sports. Also thirty-two Seniors, along with Mr. Daniel, Mrs. Artus, and Mr. Williams, went on the annual Senior Trip down South. Don Lewis was elected to the All Conference Second Football Team, and Gerald Beer was elected to the All Conference Second Basketball Team. Sissy Taliaferro, a third year cheerleader, and Charlotte Wood were the peppy Junior cheerleaders. The Junior girls who lettered in basketball were: Mary Taliaferro and Margaret Branstetter. Equally as outstanding in scholastics as in sports, the Juniors took several awards. Paul Smith was chosen to attend All State Band. Vallie Davis won the second shorthand award, Marilyn Miller the shorthand and typing awards, Doug Mullen the American History and English III award, Kathy Maddern the French award, Roger Gunning the chemistry award, and Judy Glenn a French award and Journalism award. Morris Patrick, Roger Gunning, Forrest Triplett, Raymond Krigbaum, and Joe Wells were chosen to go to Boys' State, and Judy Glenn was chosen to attend Girls' State. Roger Gunning and Judy Glenn edited the Highlights, and Ray Krigbaum and Vallie Davis were co-assistant editors of the Alamo. The class ended the year as hosts of the annual Junior-Senior Prom and Banquet. The theme was Gay Paris. The sincere thanks of the Juniors goes to the sponsors, Eva Hosman, Robert Smith, and Betty Artus. Their help and cooperation made the year a complete success. 27 Ireland Allensworth Betty Anderson Richard Barnum Rex Battern Phyllis Bono Gary Boyd Gerald Booth Kathy Boots Bob Brick Freddie Bridwell Paula Bruce Dorothy Burnett Jeanette Bush Bradley Cable Tom Camara Jackie Cashman Karen Carr Jene Carr Elizabeth Conrad Patsy Copher Joyce Davis Mary Dewey Charlotte Elliott John Elliott Mack Elliott Ada Lee England Geneva Farris Arthur Francis Mary Ellen Garner Carolyn Gillett Ellen Griffith Ruth Ann Griffith Thelma Griggs Harrell Hawkins Ronnie Hilton Sandra Holman Sherry Hullora Charles Hughart Clarence Hutt Charles Love Joyce Love Joe Ed Luck Alice McDaniel Dorothy Miller Janet Mi liner Jon Millner Melvin Miller Mickie Moffit Phyllis Morton Billy Naxera Albert Niffen Shirley Niffen Sharon O'Shea Charles Parker Robert Rue Martin Schambach Jo Ann Shade Kay Shive Du r wood Sizemore Patsy Sloan Joyce Smith Roberta Smith Rosalee Smith Ellen Sterne Lonnie Sutton Karen Tarrants Tom Thomas Robert Tilton Tom Treece Carey Turner Georgina Vetter Cheryl Walker Roy Walker Pat Watts Beverly Weaver Hardy Wilson Billy Woods Jimmy Woods Jim Worsham Bob W ort man Sudy York 31 Sophomore History One more notch up the ladder of education, the Sophomore Class of 1959-1960 jumped into a whirlwind of activities. Elected as class officers were: Jon Millner, president; Thomas Treece, vice-president; Rosalee Smith, secretary-treasurer; Sudy York and Charlotte Elliott, student council representatives. Sports played an important part in the class this year. Those receiving letters were Bob Brick, Tom Camara, Larry Clark, John Elliot, Charles Love, Jon Millner, Lonnie Sutton, Fred Bridwell, and Tom Thomas. The Sophomore Class should also be proud of its female participants in sports. These girls lettered in basketball: Georgina Vetter, Ellen Sterne, Mary Ellen Garner, Sudy York, Dorothy Miller, Mickie Moffit, and Joyce Smith. Sudy York was once again elected cheerleader. The class had a number of beauties and beaus to decorate the dances. Sophomore attendants at the Homecoming were Charlotte Elliott, escorted by Bob Brick, and Sandra Holman, escorted by Jon Millner. The F. F. A. Chapter selected Sudy York as the attendant to the Barnwarming Queen. She in turn selected Mack Elliot as her escort. Jon Millner, escorted by Rosalee Smith, was the Sophomore Attendant to the Valentine King at the annual F. H. A. Sweetheart Dance. The Outstanding Sophomore Award was received by Sudy York. Seventeen honor Students served at the Junior-Senior Banquet. Our class got money mad and by the help of bake sales, a smashing Sadie Hawkins Dance and April Fool's Dance ended up with over $500. We also received first place for our Homecoming float. Sophomores could be found in F. H. A , F. F. A., F. T. A., L Club, Pep Squad, Band, on the Highlights staff and as librarians. This year’s Freshman class was somewhat different though because they had just as many ups as there were downs if not more. First of all they elected the following people to lead the class for the first year: Jan Thomas, president; John Casteel, vice president; Jean Ann Shields, secretary; Margaret Henderson, treasurer; Jerry Blackwell and Margaret Mosley, student council representatives. The F. F. A., F. H. A.,andF. T. A. were all well represented by Freshmen. Also the L. H. S. Band and Glee Club seemed to attract Freshmen. At the Homecoming, Marilyn Knaus, escorted by Bob Campbell, and Jan Thomas, escorted by Karl Dewey, at the Barnwarming, Marilyn Knaus, escorted by Jerry Blackwell, and at the Valentine Dance, Bob Campbell, accompanied by Marilyn Knaus, represented the Freshman Class. No Freshmen lettered in football or in basketball, but Bill Leverington, Robert Gardner, and George Douglas all lettered in track. Marilyn Knaus was the Freshman cheerleader and did a good job. The Freshmen had a concession stand at the L. H. S. Tournament which proved to be profitable. We also had a sock-hop which also helped our financial condition. The annual Freshman Day was a success and left a good impression on the future Freshmen. The Freshman Class was also well represented on the Highlights staff and 37 the Alamo staff. It is made up of boys who have lettered in a varsity sport and had enough courage to face up to the annual initiation. The L Club strives to promote good sportsmanship and urge its members to be clean in body and soul. These members are entitled to wear the red letter jackets which are so frequently seen in the corridors of L. H. S. Coach Cunningham serves as the sponsor of the club. They have various money-making projects during the year and the highlight of the year is the trip usually taken by seniors to Columbia for the state basketball tournament. 64 PITNEY INSURANCE AND REAL ESTATE F.
