The Louisiana Bulldogs opened the i r 1954-55 basketball season under the supervision of Coach Bill Cunningham, in this first year at L, H, S, At the close of the '54-'55 season the Bulldogs shaped up to be one ofthe powerhouses of this area. Because of ineligibility and of boys moving away, the re source s of the team were cut sharply, Returning lettermen were: Bil1Barker, Floyd Branstetter Jim Mosley, and Ollie Parker. The Bulldogs were entered in three tournaments during the year, and also the subregional tourney at Troy, Missouri. The Bulldogs were the bige st suprise in their own tourneyas they defeated Affton and I, S, D, In the third game the Bulldoges took on the highly favo r e d Troy and gave the Trojans one of their hardest games of the season. Within two points of the 'I'roytea.m,. with only a few seconds left, the Bulldogs just counldn't quite make, it, and the game ended with a bl-05 count in favo r of Troy, The Bulldogs were then eliminated in their thi r d place bid by a strong Eureka team. I, S, D. won consolation, Bayless second, and Troy first. ln the Clopton tournament the boys took second place, defeating New London and Warrenton, which was one of the highlights of the season, but lost to Clopton. Although the season's record of 10-15 was not an outstanding one, itwas one not to be ashamed of. In a few of the games the Bulldogs were beaten by bad brakes and not the superiority ofthe other team. Lack of a skyscraper hurt the team in many games, particularly in the one subregional tourney against Montgomery City. Lost to the team this year through graduation areg Bernie Wagner, Floyd Branstetter, Clyde Penrod, and Marvin Dillender. Itwill be a tough job for Coach Cunningham to replace these able players. A Major factor in the games the Bulldogs won this year was their hot games. During many games they won, even when the other team was going good, the Bulldogs kept pace and finally won. The Louisiana B team started its year in fine style as it took the Bowling Green team into camp fo r the first games of the season. In the next game, however, the team did not fare so well and lost to a tall Mexico team. For the most part, the games followed this pattern, resulting in five wins and seven -losses, As a climax, the team scored a victory over Clopton High. When the team was rig ht it seemed to hold up andwin under a great deal of pressure. The team played fine ball and deserves the recognition of its' fellow school mates. For its second time since the organization ofthe team, the girls played in the Malvern Clopton Tournament. Although not winning atrophy, the teamls playing spirit never died. The girls practiced hard throughout the season. Although the girls did not have many games scheduled during the basketball season, they thoroughly enjoyed every game theyplayed, whether resulting in a win or loss. The line-upfor the team was as follows: Forwards were Martha Alexander, Shirley Turner, and Norma Price, Guards were Sally Patton, Mary Ruth Ocheltree, and JoAnn Fox.
