Since many years have passed, I wo11der if I will be able to recognize them. Oh! I think I see one of them now . . . As I look out in space I see a huge space ship followed by many little ones, Carolyn and family are just passing thru for a six month check-up at the new clinic. In our scientific world, I can see Io Anne looking thru her microscope for that per- fect man . He might not be too far away now. I stopped off at the atomic plant and had an interview with Frances, which was en- joyable. When I asked her how she liked industrial nursing, she stated, I have more time with David and the children. As I started to leave, Marie came whizzing by in a snazzy new space ship. She has finally come down to that 118 pounds. She says that is the way a model nurse should look. In this day and age science has conquered all things except obesity. Marilyn, a top- notch scientist, is in deep thought about her new research plans. She says Ed just doesn't like her new figure, I stopped and paused, and no one else came into view. As I looked around I saw a new hospital had recently been built. I went inside and found Mary Ann as direc- tor of its Space Nurse Cadet Corp. trying to impress upon her students the importance of calmness. On the tour thru the hospital, I passed the kitchen and met Fleta. As a dietitian she has gained quite a bit of fame for her newest recipe for coconut cream pies. She says it still isn 't like her mother-in-laws'. I was taken thru a few of the wards. Bessie with her endeavor to improve nursing, was busy teaching robots to empty bedpans and fill water pitchers. While here I learned that Wayne had been selected for that State Board of Exa- m iners. Her only speech from the platform was no-one will fail from Obici again. At the door I 111612 Peggy coming in. She says that Public Health nursing is great, nothing like the pioneer days in Kentucky on horseback. Walking on I saw a sign Sue 's Nursery . I'm glad she 's found a good use for her motherly instinct. The mothers comment that they would not take their children else- where. Further down was W anda's new model home. I found her contemplating the in- terior of the psychiatric hospital she 's planning to construct. I was invited to have rea with Nancy. As a wife of a well known surgeon she has become a charming hostess. She told me that she had recently contributed a large sum of money to the Cripple Children's Hospital. And so ends a perfect day! 18 J 44570666 We, the Senior Class of 1957, being weary in mind, and tued in body, do hereby bequeath the following in our Last Will and Testament: ARTICLE I To the Board of Directors: Enough steam to keep the water hot. Q I On September seventh, Nineteen Hundred and Fifty-Four, Obici opened her gates to seventeen more. We were shown to our rooms and our beds, Not yet realizing the task ahead. After supper we congregated all in one room, Contemplating and debating what was to be our doom. After our discussion, we rushed off to bed, Awaiting the novelty of the day ahead. We were given our uniforms--the old blue smocks, All very proud of our brand new frocks, Shoes and laces--polished and white, And happy young faces, smiling and bright With classes beginning--A natomy and such, We thought we would never learn the Magic Touch. For the first six months, our work on the floors, Was giving complete baths and caring for bedsores. Alas! The day had finally arrived, We received our caps for which we had strived. The next year held a lot in store, Our time of duty was placed on the floor. The year passed quickly-we couldn't believe, The title of Juniors, we finally received. Then came the time for Richmond affiliation, A11 waited the time of reconciliation. It was eight to go and four left behind, But all in all we stuck to the grind. In the months that followed, we were all on the prance, It was time to honor the Seniors with a dance. We planned and worked to think of a scheme, And Tails and Tophats was chosen as our theme. Our feet were tired, but our faces beamed, The dance was a success as we had teamed. September came--Seniors at lastl We could hardly believe two years had passed. Our Director passed out the black velvet bands, And explained the responsibility of having the upper hand She said now we would lead the way, As the others would be following day by day. Our hearts full of joy--our heads held high, We each had a new twinkle in our eye. Then came the reunion of our class, We thought that year would never pass. The day of graduation was drawing near, Our happy hearts told us it would soon be here. Our goal attained--our parents delight, We thank God for His shining light. September 6, 1955, yes, that was the big day that twenty-five--already homesick-- preclins filed through the doors of our new home, Louise Obici School of Nursing. It didn't talk long to get to know each other after classes started and we began the long bumpy road that will eventually lead us to an R.N. Before We knew it, almost two months had passed and we were right in the middle of our Halloween Party. lt went over with a bang --maybe because of Herman the Skeleton who hung in the corner but most likely because of Jinx the Fortune Tel- ler . He made those poor girls blush so badly. Christmas came and brought with it joy and sorrow. Some of the girls left after deciding they had entered the wrong profession. However, those of us who stayed and worked eight hours a day began feeling important to the world at last. After six months of worry and late hours of study, twenty proudbut humble girls walked calmly down the aisle of the Oxford Methodist Church to receive their re- wards. The small white caps that Miss Friend placed on our heads that night comple- ted our student uniform and from then on we were Freshmen instead of the traditional Preclins . The summer passed quickly as we spent many hours on the roof baking ourselves day after day. When September 6, 1956, rolled around our class had been reduced to fifteen girls. It was wonderful to be able to say- only two more years . Now it is March and half of our fifteen girls have gone to Richmond. A.nother year will pass before we will all be together again in the protective arms of L.O.M.H. However, in that year we will grow more and more in intelligence and maturity and when at last we have finished we will be able to face life as it really is, not as a cruel world but as a great, wide, wonderful world that has made a place for every child born. It is then we will have found our place in the nursing profession. 27 MW Wm 'L ,, lf, f .- .gy-Q, ' 133.5113 ' v. km ,, M 'f 'HX ,gi-.1:'1E:1EQ. 7g5fd 4 . 1.1: ,. .- , , I A A if fif M by ' Q UPU 'Viz in V 1 1 1' , A J . , .Y ,, L 1 W I f' W E? VI A 1 STANDING, LEFT to RIGHT: Norma McCall, President, Mrs. Ruth Felton, Spon- sor. SEATED: Bobbie Underwood, Secretary-T1'easurer5 Jean McCown, Reporter. 32 'Nw l Y , ' Sql: 41 O On September 4, 1956, we entered Louise Obici School of Nursing as the fifth preclinical class, consisting of twenty-nine girls. We were greeted by our advisors and Big Sisters . In the following days we were orientated to new friends, books, and a busy schedule. These days were also filled with many social activities. We finally settled down and started classes on the following Monday. We also elected Norma McCall as Chairman of the Preclinical class and Bobbie Underwood as Secretary-Treasurer. Our Preclinical days met us with such events as our first day of duty in our blue srnocks, return demonstrations with the aid of Miss Chase and the arrival of our white uniforms. Our first project as a class was the decorating of Planters for the district fall dance. Soon after this came the anticipation of our Thanksgiving Holidays. Upon returning from the holidays we found our days filled with much studying and more clinical work than before. Christmas soon came and was gone just as quickly, January found us busily preparing for that eventful day in February. February finally came with exams and capping which was the sixteenth day of February. After capping we became Freshmen. March followed and we again settled down to work, only this time we could proudly look back and see our first major goal conquered. 33 J.: ' ' '4 ' Qg 1,'.' V sggtsg l Joann Swain o o The third class for Medical Technicians began July 1956 with Joann Swain of Eliza- beth City, North Carolina. She was joined by Ruth Alcox of Williamston, North Carolina in April 1957. These girls are under the guidance of Dr. George I. Carroll, Pathologist. Some of their classes include Microbiology and Chemistry which they take with the pre-clinical students. What time they are not in classes, they can be found furthering their education of Medical Technology by actual experience in the laboratory. After their first semester in class, they spend the rest of their fifteen month training period learning laboratory technique. 34 ya! ,epwziff LEFT to RIGHT: Joyce Lee, Junior Representative, Carolyn Harris, Senior Representative and Historian, Fran- ces Little, Vice-President, Marilyn Thomas, Presidentg Sylvia Sims, Secretary, Linda Creecy, Treasurer, and Norma McCall, Freshman Representative. I The Student Council is made up of a President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and three class Presidents. The responsibility for the actual administrative policies of the Student Association is in- vested in this group. These are four purposes of the Student Association: ' 1. To be the offical organization which shall be responsible for the government of the student body and also the medium through which the opinions and wishes of the student body may be expressed. 2. To provide an opportunity for faculty-student discussion through the advisory committee and the student council. 3. To foster social relationships and student activities. 4. To assist in maintaining a high morale and good scholarship in the school. On the first Tuesday of each month the Student Association meets in the Nursing School Auditorium to discuss any plans, problems, or future activities. A program is usually presented by either the student group or faculty. 36 rt-'-1 . K x he x U 6406 FIRST ROW: Edna Cobb, Janie Jordan, Jane Bu.hls, Joyce Lee, Captain, Mary Arm Jeter, Florine Walker.
