GETTING ADJUSTED The first few days of school almost seem like a glorified trip to summer camp with all the dances and partying. But all too soon, classes start and there are $120 worth of books to be bought, and we ' re really expected to read and study them. Early morning classes can be a rude awakening after a night of late socializing with friends. And to make matters worse, teachers just aren ' t impressed with tales of alarm clocks that didn ' t go off. And then there are the dire warnings from teachers that we should expect to spend two hours studying outside of class for every hour we spend in class. And Mom ' s not here to do our laundry. And the cafeteria food just isn ' t what we ' re used to. And a week has passed and there is no mail from home. On the bright side, there is much inde- pendence and a world of new friends. 8 STUDENT LIFE Who ' rag doll? Tratton Reynolds and Lorraine Williams keep Connie Smith busy Budgeting money is part of being a col- lege student. With so many expenses and temptations, budgeting is a task that re- quires great self-control. While the cafeteria service has been paid for by most students, the local res- taurants lure some with anything from bis- cuits to steak dinners. Students with little budgeting will-power have been spotted at PiZ2a Hut on a regular basis. The college snack bar serves students who are easily weakened by the smell of hamburgers on the grill. Louisburg students like to have a good time and the cost of entertainment doesn ' t seem to slow them down a bit. The night-life ranks pretty high on their list of priorities Sacrifices in other areas have been made by students so that they can afford to go out with their friends. While food and entertainment are strong temptations, laundry and school supplies are expenses not to be over- looked. The laundry room often has more busi- ness than it can handle. Students readily put their change into the washers and dryers so that they will have clean jeans and shirts for the big night out or for their morning classes. Another expense many freshmen find difficult to bear is the price of their text- books Sophomores have been through the demanding book purchases before. But they too feel the pain of handing over the cash. Don ' t fret, there is a way to overcome this weakness in budgeting money. You can wear dirty jeans, eat in the cafeteria and spend all of your spare time with your books. 11 STUDENT LIFE FUN OFF CAMPUS Year Round At Laurel Mill Built prior to 1849, Laurel Mill was one of the first cotton spinning plants in N.C. By the early seventies, the mill looked like a worn-out relic of the past. In 1972, Wil- liann Holmes and his wife Margaret re- turned to his native Franklin County. They undertook rejuvenation of the mill as a retirement hobby. Today, the mill is in operation grinding wheat and corn for local farmers. Located on Sandy Creek in Franklin County, Lau- rel Mill attracts picnickers, rowboaters, swimmers and sightseers year around. It is a favorite get-away place for Louis- burg College students, who find the wide expanses of grass and the Mill and creek a wonderful place to relax with friends and enjoy the out-of-doors. This year, the Concert Series alone ot- tered the Glenn Miller Orchestra, the Westminister Choir, the Riverboat Rag- time Revue, international pianist Robert Guralnik presenting Chopin Lives, and tinally the Big Band Calvacade. This is not to mention the art shows, photography exhibitions, films and nu- merous other events that make Louisburg a very artsy place to be. Touch, the mime trio of the Art School, is composed of Shelia Kerrigan of New York, Jef of Cleveland, and Ed Damron of Sumter. S-C This IS a beach scene; fill m the blanks! Until October, we ' re able to tell our par- ents our version of how well we ' re doing in school and how well we ' re adjusting to college life. Once they come to the campus for Par- ents Day, they have the opportunity to talk to our professors and find out their version of how we ' re doing. If we ' ve been honest and conscientious and our accounts are similar to what our parents hear from our professors, it ' s a nice occasion. If we ' ve been, well, maybe fudging a bit and our folks find out we ' ve been (heav- ens forbid) cutting class and doing poor- ly, watch out Unless we ' re financially independent, fvlom and Dad usually expect a bit of ac- countability on our part. Cautious stu- dents ventured across campus for the event. As the shadows approached the building, shrieks echoed in the wind. Group after group of brave and daring souls swallowed hard in fear of what was to come as they entered. Guide George Wildman Hale had a flashlight; other- wise, it was totally dark. We were led to the first room which turned out to be a laboratory with none other than Frankenstein himself laid to rest. Dr. Jerry Cullipher injected him with a syringe, thus bringing him to life to the horror of the onlookers. The second room was filled with decay- ing female bodies. It was gore to the max . . . intestines and blood all over! Further along, jailed natives tried to coax us to either free them or join them. An obscure tunnel was the only means of escape. The slanted passageway led to the scene of an emaciated body suspend- ed on a death knot. Finally, Keith Werewolf Roberts led the group to Ben Lacy, who needed our help to conjure up a formula. It turned out he needed our heads! We were chased out with a chain saw. Nothing like a little black-cat boogie for John Ford and others on Halloween eve. The show was varied and colorful, re- vealing the range of talent and ingenuity of the Louisburg College students. James Kirby opened the show with a welcome song in many languages entitled Willkommen. (And we think anyone who can sing in many languages is defi- nitely magic.) Third prize was captured by a zangy 50 ' s group ny the name of Shama Lama Ding Dong. Sporting thin ties and baggy pants, these guys had the audience eat- ing right out of their hands. She bagan teaching at the College in 1956. Her first task was to revive a waning art curricu- lum, as the college had not offered in- struction in art for several years. As if this wasn ' t enough, Mrs. Kornegay was as- signed space in an asthetically void war surplus army barracks. Art shared space with music, the Student Union, cafeteria and kitchen. In 1963, the small building beside AC Classroom building was remodeled into the Fine Arts Building and Mrs. Kornegay found a new home for her classes. Soon she added painting and ceramics to a curriculum which already contained art education and art history. For most of her 27 year career span, Mrs. Kornegay has had several profes- sional exhibits brought to the College Art Gallery each year. She has supplemented these with works by local artists and stu- dents to create a visually cultured world for local residents and the College Com- munity. Julia is one of the teachers here who follows her students, Dr. J. Allen Norris noted at her retirement luncheon. She not only follows her students here on campus, but on through their artistic training and she invites many of them back to exhibit their work. prosperous and happy. Galileo JUST PASSING TIME Everyone at Louisburg does it their own way. It may be anything trom watching television, talking on the telephone, or just sitting with a boyfriend or girlfriend to pass the afternoon. There are a few folks who never take their noses out of the books. Trying to get ahead and stay ahead or just catching up in a class can seem all too impossible at times. Whether passing time behind the books or under an oak tree, time has its way of marching on, and there never seems to be quite enough of it. Price, Jr., is the Director ot the Division of Archives and History for the State of North Carolina. Since the fall of 1976, he has served as Adjunct Associate Professor at N.C. State Univer- sity teaching courses in the responsibilities of public history. Dr. Price said that historians, as interpreters of the past, must be willing to take themselves into society so that history becomes our living roots, not just an academic study. Historians are increasingly aware of the importance of social history and the day-to-day lives of our ancestors. In discussing the first British society in North Carolina, he pointed out that as the economy expanded, there were labor shortages. This void was filled by a steady flow of immigrants as well as imported black slaves. These conditions led to human abuse. Immigrants often brought diseases with them that led to illness and death. There were usually about four children per household, all of whom helped with chores and farming. Education was usually provided by the parents. Apprenticeships were well-known. The first school was founded in 1705 in Paskill County and was church- supported. 78 ACADEMICS WRITER-IN-RESIDENCE Betty Adcock Betty Adcock is the author of Walking Out, a volume of poems which won the Great Lakes Colleges Association ' s New Writing Award in 1975. Her second volume. Nettles, will be published by Louisiana State Univ Press in September, 1983 Mrs. Adcock has been a visiting lecturer in creative writing at Duke Univ., a Writer-In-Resident at Kalamazoo College in Michi- gan, and will be Kenan Writer-In-Resident at Meredith College for 1983-84. Poets are not essentially different from other, Mrs. Adcock said. The difference is that poets act upon their perceptions. Every- one has them, she explained, but the poet feels what she described as a shimmer. This is a gut feeling and compulsion to write. Writers are persistenly recognizing scenes and therefore are con- stantly in pursuit of finding their significance and recording it. Her advice to young poets was to immediately record any gut feelings on a subject, then to return to the writing after a cooling off period in order to discover the significance and order that can make a poem. She stressed avoiding abstractions and finding very concrete images to convey meaning. Betty Adcock works extremely well with students on a one-to- one basis. Meredith students are in for a treat. Our small community really came alive with the help of lively band music. Days- tar, Cirkus, PKM and Super Grit were the groups that made things happen. By the time the last band was on stage, most folks were mellowed out and were very content just to sit back and enjoy the music.
