«£ CECIL ;V. ROBBINS L BRARV Lou,sburg College ™ Lou sburg, N. C. 2f549 ' tW • ■i UlSOONTENTMENT 3%.= - The word reaked throughout the campus. Unaware Freshmen stepped out dressed to kill and accepted their student handbooks with smiles on their faces. Then the rude awakening. 11:00 o ' clock and 15 late minutes! No beer on campiisl No getting familiar with members of the opposite sex! Then the sophomores appeared on the scene and the dress suddenly became jeans all the way. The previous year ' s female enrollment had dwindled. To the students the reason was evident. Why should an 18 year old young woman be treated as such by law, then come to school and suddenly find out she must be locked in her dorm to stare at her four walls, someone else ' s four walls, or the long impersonal hall. Her only other resort is to take a shower, study, or go to bed. Therefore; due to this and the fact that men had no such restrictions . . . m • O THE WOMEN STAGED A PROTEST The front steps of Main was the meeting place, and those who cared came out and lamented in unison for about thirty minutes, then resolved to go back to their dorms and talk about it. Their moral supporters sat in the background and said nothing. Thus ended the first female protest for equal rights. But what was the real problem? The school elections seemed to show that not many really cared. Very few students made it to the polls, and even fewer made it to hear the campaign speeches. So what do you do? Go to class, study, eat, sleep, and go home on the week-ends. There ' s nothing to do. ■MX w ' Z I n ■i m i £ ii _ 4- , -— _ ' ■-  --■ . x .«v - - _ Well maybe not for some, but a few interested persons decided to make something ... The atheletic field came alive each afternoon while a group of dedicated guys got their bodies beaten for something they loved, and the onlookers couldn ' t quite comprehend. V J i n OUR TOWN i . I ■f Live People Don ' t Understand ' ' Parity raids became a frequent thing when groups of yelHng guys swarmed down girls ' halls and a few determined girls walked out of Wright. Halloween rolled around and with it a keg party and a lot of drunk, but happy people. The party continued in the cafeteria with a food fight going full force. Innocent bystanders may have been run out by a bowl of pudding, but those in the midst of the happening were having fun and didn ' t mind when they turned into walking spagetti. A little later that night the Halloween celebration resumed in the cafeteria, only this time, with St. Elmo ' s Fire. Then darkness overtook the situation and finally night could have her rest. Upon awakening, the head was found in a base drum, the mouth in a cotton patch and the stomach on the open sea The darkness had been pushed away by day, and the leaves by toilet paper. ■4L il l MMti 24 t . : ' 25 26 The school year continued and nothing kept happening. The Freshmen Class Officers in order to raise money for bicycle racks, decided to have a talent show. Then from somewhere people started creeping out with guitars, banjos, voices, comic and strip tease acts, juggling, and other assorted talents. To top things ott, Ed Sullivan appeared bringing with him Groucho Marks. The show was a lot of fun tor those who participated as well as for those who spectated. 27 28 1 29 tT ■ ' ; - 30 Shortly thereafter a different kind of talent made its appearance in the silent auditorium in the form of a concert. Pure Prairie League walked on stage and Homecoming 1973 at Louisburg Q)llege was officially called to disorder. Saturday floated in on a keg of beer and remained there throughout the Rugby game and parrying. Then he rolled on to the gym and cheered the Basketball team to victor) ' . Triumph demanded Celebration to begin his job, and rc ' quested that Saturday assist. Wishing to be efficient, Saturday took Connie Maxwell, who had just been crowned Homecoming Queen, and Ann Bostic, who was first runner up, and escorted them to the cafeteria Then he ran back and rounded up Pam Greene, Nell Lee, Renee Williams, Susan Person, Ellen Pernell, Donna Green, and Linda Creech and led them to join Connie and Ann. When he had all his ladic-s properly placed, he made his way to the stage and announced to Main Men and also to awaiting students that the music and body swaying could begin. While Saturday was doing all this. Celebration was allowing for consumation of certain vices which would make the body swaying very natural. Sunday slept late, but when she finally awoke she swore that she would not let Saturday out do her. With the help of Celebration and his vices, students and their friends, and Woodstock, she rounded out the weekend, then ordered Monday to be quiet scj that the students could rest. 31 la 32 3J M l_J 35 After the Big Weekend, the auditorium was unlocked to admit ALFRED ERIC STREET. Boredom sets in, but only if one lacks inter- est and drive. There was much excitement in the gym and those who participated or spectated found that nothing quickly con- verted into something. That something being a group of guys who were continually work- ing toward what ap- peared to be a very suc- cessful basketball season. These guys were not satisfied with conference victories, so they proceeded to de- feat the freshman teams of East Carolina, Caro- lina, and Wake Forest. It is pathetic to realize that while the team was gaining such recog- nition for the school, most of the students were failing to be sup- portive and were more interested in com- plaining or socializing at Chick ' s, than getting involved. The students who did become fans were left with less time to complain and even when time was avail- able, they found that they didn ' t always have a voice that would talk. 38 39 practiceconcertssingsingpianoplayonetwothreefourbreatheoneoctavehigheroneoctavelowersopranoaltobassthreefourfour P P a h y r e V u o y s e k a m n e t s i 1 o t d o o 8 1 e e f u o y s e k a m s 8 n o s s a m h c • J- 7mmmmimm o u r s i n g r r o m d o w n h e r e w a t c h y o u r d i r e c t o r 8 e t o n t h e b u s rotceridrretsofharasesorennasnommisevetsrrorojgnikynnhojsirrahkcajnotlimahnellacgcjifodnuosehthtiwevilaeraslliheht 40 ceramicscIaywhwImoldwatcrfireglazetimcpaticnccworkshorttingcrnaHsartauctionsmrskornegaydedicatwJtalcntcd e r u t P 1 u c s s t n I r P s e I d n a c s t o P g n i g n a r t w o r k i n d i a i n k b 1 a c k I i n c P a n t d r a w wolootkrowehtyfitsujt ' nodsecirpMioittuatralutituaebgnihtemosekamotdcximllaflprupnecrgegnarokcalbdcrculb- 41 --. There were several old feet gone and a few new ones to sort of fill in the gaps. It took a few days for Earth to get used to this change. When she just about had it, four new feet appeared to mess things up. Earth welcomed them and named them LUCKTENBERG DUO. They said they would only be around for a short while, so she gave them a visitors pass. Then Allen de Hart, who is Direaor of Cultural and Public Affairs, explained to Earth, in his own special way, that she had had a month to rest, but she must realize that her vacation was over and she should expect new feet at any unpredicted time. When LYLE M. CRIST visited, then later the UPSALA NEW JERSEY CHAMBER CHOIR, and even KAARLO R. TUOMI, Double Agent for U.S. and USSR, Earth welcomed them, but did not issue visitors passes. She accepted this change, yet wondered about change as a whole. From students mouths she had heard of the Cinema Art Series and was not troubled until THE BIRTH OF A NATION was presented. Then she wept to think that one of the most important films ever made was used as a session for racial rip off She realized it was in fun, but couldn ' t help wondering if intelligence would have so made fun of such a historical masterpiece. More troubling than that; however, was her thinking of change and recognizing people as people. She thought that possibly people talked well, but their true feelings were seen through their laughter. Then she too smiled. At least there is the chance that they, too, are aware and are trying to make the inside feel what the mouth relates. 48 49 n ' 4i One night during the run of MISS JULIE there were several special people in the audience. They were special because they were from Canada and it is seldom that people from out of state frequent the theatre, much less out of the nation. But more than that, these people were performers, and the cast ofMISS JULIE had the opportunity of acquiring front row seats when The Terry Dee Rock and Roll Circus burst forth on the auditorium stage. Their show was not only enjoyable to listen to, but was meaningful to think about in the way it was put together. To a lot of the audience its impact was multiplied due to the fact that the group had been in Louisburg for several days and many students had had a chance to meet and partially get to know the entertainers as people. The following night The Castaways LTD made their appearance in the cafeteria. Results of the weekend were tired bodies, worn shoes, and smiles. 0 52 5J 54 Several months had passed. Blank walls had been hit. The girl ' s rules remained the same. Something had to be done. Several letters had gone in to HEW concerning women ' s rights under Title IX, What more could be done. ' ' Interested students thought that maybe ign(jrance concerning legal rights caused the fear which kept so many quiet. An Awareness Meeting was set up and Elizabeth Petersen, a Durham Attorney, was the speaker. She touchc-d on many laws and bills which had been passed concerning the legal rights of women in all areas. When she got to the area of education all ears opened wide. Retlecting on Mrs. Petersen ' s interpretations as an attorney, the students felt that maybe they had a chance. The room was emptied of students, faculty, staff, and administration: some with high hopes and some with disgust; some extremely upset; and some with no feelings one way or the other. Thus ended the second women ' s protest for equal rights. Later that same evening a bomb was set off outside the window of the Dean of Students ' office. The SBI and FBI were called in. It was estimated that a fragment flying from the explosion could have been fatal to an innocent bystander. To those students working positively for improvement, the negative declaration of contempt could not be lightly passed off It was not tunny and few concerned persons laughed. With bombs, women ' s rights, and globs of tension in the air, an escape was needed. This was found through an enlightening new fad called STREAKING. The number one streaker stepped out to lead the pack of approximately 1 1 5. Louisburg College captured the record for the greatest percentage of male streakers. 55 56 n Think basketball until it hurts. No. don ' t think just concentrate. There ' s no time in this game for thought. Practice makes perfect, but don ' t perform to perfection . . . it ' s easier to accomplish than it is to sustain. Danny Davis 57 Winter weekend was over, and it ' s remembrance was kept in the head. Everything else was swept away in order to prepare for Sunday dinner and a POETRY CONCERT. A little later the NORMAN LUBOFF CHOIR performed and are best remembered for their encore. The next openings of the auditorium, other than for Friday night fdms, were for HAL SHANE and STEWART UDALL. 59 The quiet, subdued quality of concerts and lectures is in vast contrast to the sweat and grind on the baseball field. Since early fall the sport had been absent from most minds except most of those which occupy third Patton. Klcats, gloves, and various other related objects were taken from storage and Ixxlies tired of vacation were itching to once again become one with a game. Getting back into shape was no problem and the anticipation of competition began to build. Hours of practice began which were only minimal in comparison to ones ahead. Books took on new significance, not in content, but in the necessity to get them out of the way in order to persue a number one interest. A newly renovated field, and a sort of ball fever started preparing the team for the baseball season. 61 62 63 m heads huddled «wp arms surround , ■lE straining backs bent SJBk| « hips heavy with tension . k ' IS HVp - thighs teaming with energy SSk calves crashing together all above feet feet feet fighting forever for the central circular M object the ball k i the ball m ' Wjj kick H ' iV B catch k kI dust drifts into clouds hangs Hb K dances Bb IH disappears H Bp B to uncover bending bodies M K m k becoming one r m 3 rugged rendering of self r fe H I for love of RUGBY HHBI ii M i. t v m 67 Students who enjoy sports as a hobby more than a dedication or profession, have found themselves involved in intramurals. In this way they can compete and satisfy that urge to conquer and are also able to familiarize themselves with more than one sport. The program thus far has included Softball, bas- ketball, table tennis, pool, volleyball, and football. The rivalry be- tween teams is quite apparent, but in a friendly, not fiendish way. So, you unbottle stifled anxieties and build up the body at the same time. What more can you ask? Ex- cept maybe a renovated athletic field. i 68 During the spring of the year Earth got beaten around by feet eager to exert their physical capabilities. Therefore, when GILL EAGLES, THE ENTER- TAINING PSYCHE, visited, she sighed in relief because his feet were second in importance to his mind. Then the FIORI MUSICAL CHAMBER QUINTET , from Boston, gave her a pleasant evening of music. The change in pace helped her to be able to cope with the daily tromping she received. :i H m Ki m V ' , ' ■■• ' Or, a soccer field. That would do nicely for some. Soccer.- At Louisburg! ' ' Yes, because just like rugby, a group of guys decided they wanted to form a team and they did. Nothing much has been heard ab jut the soccer team on a wide spread basis, but the important thing is that the players are happy. Hopefully in the future, with the continuance of the sport, soccer can establish itself as a well known happening oi the campus everyday life. 73 Sports are not the only student time occupiers and this was made evident at the second student talent show. Many returning faces, as well as new ones were seen, but the highlite of the evening was when two faces were seen, then slowly disguised with rounds of bosco to the butt; jelly to the naval; eggs to the temple; peanut butter to the armpits; fruit cocktail to the head; soda to the nad; flour to the head; and finally the pimple popper. It was a fun evening, though the mayonnaise in the pimple popper practically gagged several of the spectators. 74 f; 76 . It seems that when spring rolls around a fever creeps into bodies and docs strange things. Television becomes a winter luxury (except for the soaps and especially The Young and the Restless) and people start creeping from their interior confines. Arms and legs burst forth along with backs, bellys, and other choice areas. Then, ;iccording to the seasonal tradition, the tedious task of exciting melanin begins. This can be accomplished in many ways, but most students tend to employ the DO IT WHILE YOU PLAY method. For some the play comes second in importance, but for others, such as the tennis team, it corner first. Their ambition is to work toward perfecting an activity which they enjoy. If, in the meantime, they gather a few rays it is only unplanned second nature and par for the course — or court. Speaking of courts, it might be worth noting that finally, behind Hillman, there have been construaed some courts which do justice to the talent performed on them by Louisburg ' s Tennis Team.  A 9 WMm A ' i ZAW I r ' !-- • : ' f f M- — v - , 78 1 ' t; 79 ' - ' -Ml fl can only be anticipated, but it is certain that Louisburg will be pulling for and represented by the best team in each remaining game. 80 •r i 1£ 81 Friday drug Celebration out of a butt and requested his sei% ' ices. Celebration cracked from ear to ear remembering his last mission, and agreed to do all he could. By the time the auditorium was opened for the performances of Mission Mountain Wood Band and Edmonds and Curley, Celebration had made his rounds and everyone was fixed up and ready, in one way or another, for a fine evening. At 12:00 midnight, Friday abdocated his position and allowed Saturday to take over. This one out of seven sharing deal was getting to be a pain, but Saturday was sworn under oath to act according to the best of his ability. He ordered Celebration to visit all the keg parties, the Rugby and Soccer games, and the dance that evening. Celebration made it to all but the soccer game and that was because it was out of town, and he had no means of transportation. He was a smashing hit, when Main Stream took over the stage, as he danced with May Queen, Marian Satterwhite; first runner up Jill Rice; then in turn with Jan Moses, Vickie Hawks, Karen Little, Deborah Whaley, Rene Williams and Sandy Welch. Sunday once again did her job, and declared a day of rest. 84 85 11 « A ' ■• ' iV x. r rs --V-N i pIC It seems that all the experiences of a lifetime have been packed into my two years here at Louisburg. I ' m sure that at no time in my life ha%c I fount! a more loving atmosphere and peace at mind as I have in this shady little town. But the culmination of all these experiences has been heightencxi by my participation as a member ot the baseball team. Ac- tually, baseball has been my life, but not necessarily my ultimate goal in life. I ' m sure this is true of the whole team, as 1 feel that anything that I can say personally about baseball will also apply to every other member of the team. That ' s how close we are. In all of my years ot baseball I have never been closer to a group of guys as I have been here at Louisburg. Our team has not only shared the sweat and hard work on the practice field, but also the anxiety of handing in a term paper on time, massaging the sf)re arm of a fellow teammate to make sure it ' s in g(X)d shape for the next game, and the ultimate moment of triumph when the final out is made and another victor) ' is under our belt. X ' e have in all honesty lived together and sharcxi the joy of being a well-working unit as one, not only on the field, but off More important, our team has lived the word love for 2 hours a day crery day. But e en maybe more imp)rtant, we have all learncxl the significance of how a game can relate to our own reality in life. In other words, I have encountered and learned to cope with almost every emotion and situation on the field that I have also encountered in everyday life. For instance, when you ' re thrown out trying to steal second base, and it ' s a ck se call, you immcxliately react violently and want to argue, but you also have to realize that the umpire has the final say, just as the laws of society do in our courts. S j you learn to handle all emotions of anger, jealousy, pride, and joy in be- tween the lines on the ball field; and therefore, you are better able to handle real life situations when they arise. As a baseball player you also learn respect for the other guy, how to handle your pride when you win, and your disappoint- ment when you lose. Sk) baseball may be just a game to some pc-ople, but what is life. ' I hope that you can see how a seemingly boring game can have so many implications to the guys who play it. We have been lucky enough to have the talent and desire to win our conference title, and represent not only our school, but also the rest of the schools in our conference in tournament play. With love on our side, we cann(;t lose. Ken Gentry 89 S; Think basketball , but not always. Somewhere between praaice, games, and class, these guys found time to study, for some, not just enough to stay on the team, but to make A ' s and B ' s. For their coach, Enid Drake, a full time job, yet he found time to be a teacher, friend, father, son, and part-time cook. Praaice at one oclock in the morning, but maybe it was necessary. All those runs to the river (even if one or two found it more convenient to hide along the way, then join in on the return trip), breakfast every morning, no cutting classes, praaice until all energy is drained and then another hour, little time for socializing, few weekends off. Then it was over. Relaxation. Eat, drink, and don ' t get lazy over the summer. After struggles, conterencc-s, open defiance, and fmally the requc-st for help from HEW, the women have been liberated, and the curfew demolished. Many fear the Christian atmosphere will be destroyed, and the no hours policy will invite trouble. This may be true, but why be pessimistic. It is true that many destructive things have taken place after 1 1 :00 or 12:00 o ' clock, but if you are a night person, your studying is done, you don ' t have an early class, and you feel like going out and having a good time, where do you go. Raleigh maybe. But that woman on your right has to be in by midnight, and she has used up all of her late minutes. So at 11:15 you jump in the car and head back to Louisburg. She jumps out of the car and rushc-s to disappear behind the closing dcxjr. You stand out on front campus with all the other guys and watch the curtain slowly cut off all civil communication with the female world. She is wide awake and searches out others in her same predicament. You hear female voict-s calling out through the darkness. Then an open blind with the light turnc-d on. Peep Show time. Think how nice it would have been for the trees if the guys had women to keep them company instead of toilet paper. Think how much more sleep Dean Settle and the house mothers would have gotten if the party had stayed in Raleigh instead of coming to Louisburg. Well? Undisciplined later partiers may have hangovers and cut classes, flunk tests, and get kicked out of schcx l for academic reasons. But that is for them to decide. Then as if by command, books open and eyes fly across words. Words — Sentences — para- graphs. Memorized for a few fleeting hours, then written down and forgotten. Exams over, gradu- ates await the end, freshmen the beginning of a new year with addi- tions and changes that the sopho- mores, the school, and the govern- ment have left as gifts. To be opened, but not to be abused and cast aside. To be used with maturi- ty, changed as deemed necessary, and passed on to their rising sopho- more class. 48F - 102 103 m ■ r Ulr V  . IffWl i !! Seconds of time which mark the end of numerous minutes and the beginning of unknown futures. Rapid steps, smiles, familiar faces to embrace, unfamiliar ones to forget, and remember. Tears crawl from the eye, roll from the face, and are seen no more. Enjoyed your company, your friendship, your abscence. Write me. Goodbyes echo, fade, then are lost as they intermingle with the chattering of the squirrels. 109 A screaming alarm burns my ears as the day begins. Heat and the faint aroma of sulphur hint at what ' s to come. They intensify with the approach of each day ' s inev- itable confrontation. I stagger into the room. Through the flames I see others, compelled like me to the inner sanctum and the presence of: Professor X. Hours of torment; heat; ranting lectures before respite. Freed from the fiery circle we race madly from the flames, each seeking his own balm. Running, racing, climbing; high, higher into the night Inevitable crash — down once again into the buring day. 110 Ill ■■■: mm ' iM L SS i ' = Smiles and tears intermingle Struggles and fears rekindle Memories. civ 113 Student Life: Sophomore Mug Shots Gary Stanton Ange Paula Mane Arcese Willard R. Meanwhile, on the front steps of A.C. the Sophomore Class Officers were in somewhat the same prc-dicament. The fate of these seven people was unpredicted. but the) ' all faced it as one, and not as separate bodies. -1 Clothe yourself in your armor for there ' s a long fight ahead. They will attack you from every side with every weapon in their artillery. And you must be ready. Battles have been won in shabby armor before but only when the soldier used his armor creatively. Inflated words and swollen tempers will not replace armor in the heat of battle. Sinking ships can be salvaged . . rats can learn to swim . . Knowledge is your armor . . human-ness is your goal The time is now Begin your battle. Ready or not you must gather your armor. This is the moment. There will be no next time this time. And on the day of victory take a silent moment to remember we that have gone before. — Richie Newman 124 125 Student Life: Freshmen Mug Shots Delores Everett Albert Benjamin Grey Alexander Eva Karen Allen James Floyd Ammons.
