Through the Main lUiildiiig ... its halls echo of footsteps of those who helped erect it in 1855. Its service to tlie i)etterment of humanity is marked not by a monument, but by cur ' ed steps that slope with years of wear by ambitious feet, i ' he building itself is a monument to courage and accomplish- ment. Its tall white columns still stretch heavenward, stately cUid proud. How nianv hearts has it inspired; ' How many minds has it guided? How many friends has it gained? Recorded in the groove of those stone steps are the foot- prints ol all those lor over a century who have gained from or contributed to Louisburg College. Among the numerous footprints lie those of Matthew S. Davis, a president of the college lor many years, whose name is borne by the building erected in 1913, as a memorial to him. Louisburg was outgrowing itself and needed Davis Memorial Building desperately. It was a welcome relief to the expanding college, the first companion of Main Building. Inevitably, Main was to gain more companions. In spite of the hard times of the dav, the college continued to grow. The west wing was added to Main Building in 1924 to provide more space. As late as 1946, improve- ments were being made in the west wing. Pattie Julia Wright Memorial Dormitory was given by Mr. R.H. Wright in memory of his sister who attended : . i»:?

Hears at . . . Louisburg College. Fornierlv it served as a dormitory for men students. For years now its has been the women ' s dormitory and liouses today one liundred two women students. More than one student has made lile-long and yery dear friends within the walls of Wright Dorm. It has been the home of students who hayecarried its memory in the choice spot of their hearts. Wright Dorm provided room for more students. Con- sequently, the classrooms were not adequate to meet the need. Franklin County Building was the answer to a prayer. This buildmg is like a twin to Davis Building; they stand on either side of Main Building, giving bal- ance to the view. Like protectors both Davis and Franklin Buildings stand, demanding respect for their elder. Progress continued, and in 1948, a cafeteria, built from war surplus materials, was added to the campus. A gym- nasium came next in 1950. Increased attendance meant an increased number of appetites; so, in 1959, the Benjamin N. Duke College Union Building was constructed— a modern and beautiful work of art. The cafeteria, patio, and soda shop are features of this building. This new cafeteria left the old one without a job to do. However, the old cafeteria was not to be useless long. The Department of Fine Arts moved in and is there today. I il 11™ ' i:g
