Its service to tlie i)etterment of humanity is marked not by a monument, but by cur ' ed steps that slope with years of wear by ambitious feet, i ' he building itself is a monument to courage and accomplish- ment. Its tall white columns still stretch heavenward, stately cUid proud. How nianv hearts has it inspired; ' How many minds has it guided? How many friends has it gained? Recorded in the groove of those stone steps are the foot- prints ol all those lor over a century who have gained from or contributed to Louisburg College. Among the numerous footprints lie those of Matthew S. Davis, a president of the college lor many years, whose name is borne by the building erected in 1913, as a memorial to him. Louisburg was outgrowing itself and needed Davis Memorial Building desperately. It was a welcome relief to the expanding college, the first companion of Main Building. Inevitably, Main was to gain more companions. In spite of the hard times of the dav, the college continued to grow. The west wing was added to Main Building in 1924 to provide more space. As late as 1946, improve- ments were being made in the west wing. Pattie Julia Wright Memorial Dormitory was given by Mr. R.H. Wright in memory of his sister who attended : . i :? Hears at . . . Louisburg College. Fornierlv it served as a dormitory for men students. For years now its has been the women ' s dormitory and liouses today one liundred two women students. More than one student has made lile-long and yery dear friends within the walls of Wright Dorm. It has been the home of students who hayecarried its memory in the choice spot of their hearts. Wright Dorm provided room for more students. Con- sequently, the classrooms were not adequate to meet the need. Franklin County Building was the answer to a prayer. This buildmg is like a twin to Davis Building; they stand on either side of Main Building, giving bal- ance to the view. Like protectors both Davis and Franklin Buildings stand, demanding respect for their elder. Progress continued, and in 1948, a cafeteria, built from war surplus materials, was added to the campus. A gym- nasium came next in 1950. Increased attendance meant an increased number of appetites; so, in 1959, the Benjamin N. Duke College Union Building was constructed— a modern and beautiful work of art. The cafeteria, patio, and soda shop are features of this building. This new cafeteria left the old one without a job to do. However, the old cafeteria was not to be useless long. The Department of Fine Arts moved in and is there today. I il 11™ ' i:g . . . Louisburg Colleye The newest addition to the campus is the Auditorium- Classrooms Biiildinu;. purcluised in June. 1961. Its re- novation made it a pleasant place to learn. In progress is the construction ot the new men ' s dorm- itory beside die FrankHn l)iiildin ;. Belore long it will be completed— another step in the growdiofl.ouisburgCoUege. All oi these buildings compose the Louisburg College that the class ol 1962 knows, with one exception— die campus of oaks. Those tall, old oaks are laden with snow in the winter and wiili green leaves in the summer. Whichever the case, il is to man) ' the most bcautilul campus in the world. The purity of the snow enchants thetrees, but spring brings vivid greens that stir the spirit. The drab brown of fallen lea es is ne er depressing, and the brown is preceded by gay reds and yellows. Who has not seen the squirrels chasing about in the spring or diligendy storing nuts for the winter: ' Who has not heard the changing of songs as birds move in where others have moved out? (]ould Nature be more real any- where else? fai-ESI SWMfauulIMM ... Louisburg College ... May italwaysbeas stalwart and inspirational as the graceful oaks that surround it! May its memory always be held in the warmest part of our hearts! May it continue to be an inspiration and guide! This year is drawing to a close, and our hearts ache at the thought of leaving our Louisburg. During this time you have remained, above all, the friend, guide, and counselor of the many students who have come in contact with you. Students, faculty, and others who have worked with you and have known you have come to admire your honesty, resourcefulness, strength of character, and kindness. We will never forget your unfaltering interest and devotion toward education, your quick friendliness and good-will, and your unfailing patience with students. For such an influence we are grateful. For such a friend we count ourselves fortunate. For such a man we dedicate with deep appreciation the 1962 OAK to you Mr. C. Ray Pruette. 10 iministration 11 •.£ ?( -- - r . Here we come in contact with great personalities of the past and the present. We form friendships that grow more precious through the years. We learn to appreciate deeply and we appropriate for ourselves great literature, fine music, enduring art, noble ideas, provocative thoughts. Here we learn to thmk for ourselves. Here we learn to Uve and work with others. College is not preparation lor life. It is life itself— full, exciting, absorbing, challenging. It is fortunate for us that so many of the experiences of 1961-62 can be depicted upon tlie pages of The Oak so drat when we turn these pages, whether it be in 1962 or in 2002, the sight of names and faces, of unforgettable scenes, will stir memories that thrill and inspire and bless.
