VARSITY FOOTBALL This years varsity was plagued with injuries and lack of experience as it came out on the short end of a 1-1-4 league record. With only three returning lettermen from last year's team, our underdog Wildcats came up with a 20-20 When tie against Washington in our First league game. The next week we met Fremont, who ended up Co-Champs this year with Campbell. After trailing 25-0 at the half, our varsity turned in a brilliant sec- ond half as we made it 20-25 in the closing minutes. We were marching for another possible score when a heart breaking fumble gave Fremont the ball, They then tallied again to make the final score 20-31. . Following our defeat by Fremont. we were the underdogs when we met Mt. View, especially after losing our all S.C.V.A.l.. end and quarterback, Chuck Stewart. He received a serious knee injury in practice and didn't see any more action for the rest of the season. The Wildcats clicked and really worked as a team for one ofthe few times in the season. as we handed the Eagles a 27-13 beating under the able quarterbacking of transfer Terry Ogden. This proved the high point in the season as the Wildczits, with one of the best offense in the league, couldnt muster another win in league competition, lim Burrows was elected captain, the Colburn trophy went to Glenn Denee, and Kenny Spagnola was awarded the Streepy trophy as the most valuable player. tw ill six' our TEAM turned out .. r I QNX MJQ ,, , ff, ra ' f , . f f ,f f 1 ,1f,.,,-1-' , ., ,, rex.,---1 l, in inf , . The cabinet, con- sisting ofthe representatives from each counseling room and the commission- ers, did a fine job in making such good assemblies and Creating the atmosphere of friendship among the girls. As is done each year the Girls' League gave a scholarship to a deserving senior girl. The teachers were surprised this year by the Christmas cards that they re- ceived from the Girls' League. Certain- lv all of the success of this year could not have been possible without the fine leadership of Doris Wilkinson, presi- dent: Edith l-lernstedt. vice president: Marybeth Epps, secretary: and ludy Loevvy. treasurer. Weren't they wonderfull The honor of being elected a student leader is something that is an exceptional honor be- cause only four students ever attain this goal. The nomina- tions, selection of campaign managers, campaign posters, and finally campaign speeches, are only the beginning. Then the big day arrives - ballots are cast, and the long, anxious wait begins before the final results are posted. Another wait i until school begins again in the fall -- then the long hours of hard work and responsibility really begin. Through their example of leadership, the rest of the student body has something to 'trive for, a goal to achieve. Under the management of Iubie Arnerich, the captains were Sandy Daly, Karen Fry, Stephanie Hancock, and Linda Garnett, whose team proved to be the one with the most stamina and sportsmanship, as was verified by their championship scores. With the girls participating in this sport, they had GIRLS' VOLLEYBALL a very successful season. Nine, Stephanie Hancock was the manager ol the eighty-eight girls who participated playing volley ball. ln fact, due to this large turnout two separate round-robin tournaments were played. The captains for the Tuesday tournament were Iubie Arnerich, Catherine Kirby, Linda Forbes, and Iane Sasaki, and the captains for the Thursday tournament were Arlene Sadler, Ianice Stewart, Sharon Schaefer, and Ioan Princehouse. During this season the girls were always ready to fight to the finish, and they had a lot of fun, which was due to their spirit and enthusiasm. l-V A JV -,f I ,i . Derlelt inspired CHEERS from FA S It takes good resistance to cold, plenty of prac- tice, and hard work to become a good majorette, and Los Gatos has some of the bestl We less exuberant spectators wondered how these smiling girls could show such complete indifference to the biting air. Our prancing majorettes, with shimmering uniforms and twirling batons, led the band and drum corps to another successful season, and with Ieanette Polen heading the Gatos twirlers, our marching units came in second to none. Los Gatos Band, renewing again its widespread reputation as one of the finest bands in the county, not only excelled in music, but also in marching abi- lity. We, in the stands, were proud as they executed difficult drill formations on the field. The band brought home honors from the San Iose Balloon Parade and the annual Los Banos Parade while the pep band made the whole building ring during rally assemblies, inspiring cheers from everyone. The Drum Corps, through the many trophies and prizes exhibited this year, proved again what a terri- fic group they are. With Mr. Blattner totrain them, these girls showed perfection in rhythm and preci- sion, and Los Gatos is indeed proud .of theml When the final gun sounds. three hoarse girls lead the gang in the Alma -Mater. They are our cheer- leaders. Ianice Tedford, with her shout of Come on, kids, YELLV' was every minute a capable lead- er, and with vivacious Leanne Boccardo and en- thusiastic Ervie Lee Morris ably sharing the task, Los Gatos could not have been better represented. This culmination of all our efforts could not have been accomplished. however, without the additional help of David Kline who voluntarily took many of our pictures, and without the guiding hand of Mr. Matheny. Lou Leonard and LaRue Gamble are two freshmen who look like very good prospects. Dick Princehouse and Chuck Stewart were the chief hurlers, and some of the men who returned from last year's team were Chuck Johnston, Ted Abe, Frank Main, Ray Gamble, and Earl Green. 1 fillw EQ w ind!
