McDONALD President Los Angeles State College From the days of America's pitchfork pioneers to the present, the hands of free men have played a vital part in the firm and resolute shaping of new frontiers. From the trigger of a stoic long-barrel rifle to the bowl of curling smoke from the Indian peace pipe, the hand has moved in a long line of toil, industry, art and expression. I'n this age of progress, the hands and minds of men have turned toward great works in scienceg first probes into interplanetary space, the miracles of nuclear power and medical research. Indeed, there has never been a more portent demand for intelligent and responsible action on the part of mankind. Los Angeles State College stands with other ever- growing institutions of higher learningg where the pitchfork has been traded for the pencil, where the aspirations, ambitions, and dreams of man rest in the hands and minds of youth searchingf or answers. In the following pages, PITCHFORK records an incident reflection of a free people in action . . . of youth preparing for the great challenge of life in this year of our Lord, 1958-9 A. Good minds fthe facultyi and excellent facilities ,fthe build- ingsj have been brought to bear on the problems of a successful launching of the projectile-the student. Rocket engineers continue to achieve higher degrees of pre- dictability as to a rocket's reaching its target. Unlike this phys- ical concept of plotting and predicting, the College finishes its task with the launching procedure. The projectile must chart its own course. The College can only enhance your power of self-direction. li LAMBERT ALBERT D. Executive Dean Dean of the College E gg, ,, ,. . ., ft 'I Lita., T. 3.3- FLOYD R. EASTWOOD JAMES B- ENOCHS IO Dean of Student Activities DCHH of Graduate Studies -'-a., It can provide living ideas which might act as gyroscopes as you make your way toward your own goals, but, more important, it can improve your ability to build your own gyroscopes. The College will follow you with expectation and hope as you soar ever upward and onward, and would ask in return only that you look back occasionally at your launching site toward improving conditions for those who will follow in the ushotsn to come. This past year began in June with the traditional Phi Delta dinner and dance at the Huntington Sheraton Hotel in Pasadena. At this biggest of all the year's great social events, Miss Mary Brock was selected to reign as Sweetheart of Phi Delta for the coming year. The brown-eyed brown haired young lady lives in South Pasadena where she attended high school and then Pasadena City College be- fore coming to Los Angeles State College in 1958. An elementary education maior, she is a member of Theta Gamma Chi Sorority, the Ski Club, and the California Student Teachers Association. Mary was also selected as a Prin- cess in the Homecoming Court. Each and every member of Phi Delta appre- ciates all that Mary has done for them and feels honored to have her as their Sweetheart. Phi Delts take pride in knowing that their most important tradition becomes stronger and more a part of Phi Delta with each day that Mary is their Sweetheart. Preparing for final exams.
