This was our first year of competition in football and for this one game we introduced a new trophy called, quite appropriately, the OLD SHOE . This trophy is the football shoe of a once famous college football carrier. The shoe has been cast in metal and mounted on a platform. Each year the winner's name is engraved on the trophy. Pepperdine won the first game and has the OLD SHOE at present. We expect to bring it back to STATE next football season. . 'il -1 i fl 3 Y. I, . 55' QE! 'KD 3' gr: O. 3,12 EE Nm llllll ... 'li 32. FOOTB LL If the old adage lt's not whether you win or lose but how you played the game carries any truth, and l believe it does, I certainly extend my respects to a grand bunch of boys who surmounted innumerable obstacles to carry the colors of L. A. State gloriously through a tough schedule for the first season of football in State History. I am sure that the spirit and the endeavors they put forth right up to the final whistle will prove an invaluable background for them in later years. Like efforts will enable them to succeed in whatever phase of later life they undertake. The coaching staff deemed it a pleasure and an honor to have these boys as members of their first football squad. They are worthy of the many plaudits extended to them. Sunasky ' A 4 Only a small group of players answered Coach Bud Adam's call to the first regular practice sessions. As a matter of fact there were, at times, not enough men to have two teams for scrimmaging, yet head man Adams did not let this fact deter him from his goal of whipping a football team into shape. ln short order the team began to shape up and the boys saw that Adams meant business and business meant work. ln helping to bring the team around, Scotty Deeds, back- field mentor, and Don Avery, coach of the forward wall, did yeoman duty. All three coaches gained and held the respect of the players and rapidly new blood was added to the roster. The railbirds called this team, the old men but they could not help admiring the spirit of this group whose key word was hustIe . On Friday, September 28, after only six weeks of practice, the State team met its first opponent. This was the strong Terminal Island Navy team headed by the swift running, hard hitting Juel Sweath. The next week the team carried the Black and Gold to San Francisco State. Again the locals were outmaned but not outfought. This game brought some injuries to the Diablos and these together with the quick punch of the experienced San Francisco team proved too much for the home team. The score L. A. 'l8 - S. F. 37. October 13 was the night of the Cal Poly game. For this occasion, the team, and a group of rooters, journeyed to San Luis Obispo, where the veteran Mustang eleven was amazed at the pushing around it received from the eager Devils. The defensive play of the locals was the high light of the game and Cal Poly was lucky indeed to get by this one. There were several injuries and bad breaks suffered by the Diablos but the real disappointment of the evening came when Skip Yandell, offensive guard and defensive end, substained a knee injury that was to keep him out of play till the last game of the season. Six players were starting at posi- tions in which they had never seen action, and two more starters were taken out of the game in the first half. The rest of the team was held together with little more than adhesive tape and guts. Even so the Tigers saw all the action they cared for and were glad to hear the final whistle blow. The final tally - L. A. 0 - Oxy 16. The general wish of the team and coaches was that they had not gone to San Diego the next week. The conference winning, Pineapple Bowl bound Aztecs, from the start, amazed and befuddled the State team to the tune of L. A. 0 - San Diego 64. The spirit of the Diablos showed itself the next week by bouncing back from this terrible blow by defeating the strongest team ever to carry the Green and Gold of the La Verne College.
