A bird s eye view shows Pacific s Winged T offense ready to roll against the 7 man line defense of Azusa L. A. PACIFIC 18 AZUSA COLLEGE 16 This was the night! The greatest thrill of the year came before an astonished crowd as L. A. P. C. upset the powerful Azusa team. The Panthers played their finest game of the season as they rallied again and again to hold off a loaded Azusa SpIitT club Azusa scored first in the opening quarter but L A came right back as a 59 yard pass from BOB LIN VILLE to end JIM SHEFFER set up Pacific s first tally On the very next play quarterback BOB LINVILLE passed the ball 27 yards to end RON MIDYETT who out fought two Azusa men for the score The conver sion try was missed so Azusa still maintained an 8 to 6 lead However in the second quarter tackle ED WHITNEY and guard SAM TURNBOUGH raised havoc with the Azusa ball carriers and threw them for loss after loss until Azusa was deep in their own territory Being forced to go to the air Azusa found L A s VINCE MYERS intercepting their forward pass and returning it to set up the Panthers second score Minutes later DAVE RAINES drove off tackle 3 yards for the Panthers second score just before the half ended L A P C went to their locker room at half time with a 12 to 8 lead Starting the second half it was apparent immediately that Pacific was not to be denied On the third play big BOB LINVILLE ripped through the middle of the Azusa line behind the massive Panther center CONNIE CARMACK LIN VILLE didnt stop running until he hit pay dirt some 53 yards away This put L A P C in a commanding 18 to 8 lead and only a last quarter 50 yard run by Azusa quarterback Dave Knowles kept the Sentinels in contention But this was Pacifics night and any hope of Azusa s scoring was blotted out as the en tire Panther line smashed the Azusa backs for suc cessive losses of 7 3 9 13 and 23 yards respec tively during the last 5 minutes of the contest The victory was a great tribute to the fine spirit of an out manned but certainly not out fought Pacific team Wingback DUKE ARCHER runs a reverse to set up a td Moments L A PACIFIC 18 later the Panthers scored the all important game winning touch down in the great 18 to 16 upset of Azusa College BOB LINVILLE 98 Panther quarterback on a 51 yard touchdown jaunt in the second quarter against Southern Cal College End VINCE MYERS 89 gets set to clean out ALL AMERICAN Bill Severn and spring the play oose SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA COLLEGE 20 two thousand turned out for the Golden State Athletic Association championship game A Pacific victory would make the Panthers the undisputed champions a victory by Southern Cal would throw the final lejgueAs'gandings into a three way tie between Azusa Southern an L As was expected Southern Cal s fabulous Little All American quar terback Bill Severn was outstanding He was responsible for every Vanguard score as he ran twice around the Panther flanks to pay dirt and tossed a 21 yard t d pass for their final score Also Severn passed once for S C s conversion effort which eventually proved to be the margin of victory for the Vanguards Southern Cal scored first and made their conversion in the opening quarter L A P C bounced right back with a score as BOB LINVILLE broke loose for a 51 yard bootleg play The Panther try for point was blocked and the score board flashed Southern Cal 8 L A 6 In the second quarter the Panthers marched 87 yards to score as DAVE RAINES skirted the Vanguard s end from 7 yards out aided by a block from guard JOHN MACARTHUR to put the Panthers ahead 12 to 8 Then back came S C with Severn leading the way for their second score Halftime showed Southern Cal 14 L A Pacific 12 After the half the Panthers great quarterback BOB LINVILLE ran 63 yards for the tally making it C C 14 Then Seve ra lie is Vanguard club to another score in the last quarter as he passed to his wingback Tanner for the game winning touchdown The Panthers made one last minute gallant effort to pull the game out of the fire as they drove down to Southern Cal s 3 yard line but as fate would have it the ball was fumbled with only 3 inches to go for the score They came out on the short end but the fans left the game proud of their performance The season was indeed a great success and football had made its mark at L A P C I ' The air was filled with anticipation as a Homecoming crowd of over Cal, . . .c.
