ii D ww-1' Miss Dorothy Albright Always vitally interested in L.A. High's students, Miss Albright received a special opportunity to serve them when she was ap- pointed a grade counselor in 1928. Her final year in that post was 1950, when she and Mrs. Marie Ryan counseled a huge graduating class of 662 seniors. A host of her students have won distinction in various fields. One of the most famed is jose Quintero, the noted Broadway producer of such plays as Medea , The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone , and the Pulitzer Prize winner, Long Day's journey Into Night . Quintero, who is currently directing Thornton Wilder's new series of one-act plays, portrayed the part of Senor Pell Agra in a puppet play which Miss Albright's science students presented. Every continent except Australia has been visited by L.A. High's champion globe-trotter. Her around-the-world jaunt last summer was preceded by trips to Europe, Mexico, Alaska, the Caribbean, and all the capital cities of South America. But no matter where Miss Albrignt's travels may take her in the years that lie ahead, Rome's campus will always be her home port of call, for Miss Albright's many years of dedicated service to L.A. High have woven her life inextricably into the fabric of our school's history and traditions. If you listen closely this Friday when the names of graduating seniors are called perhaps you'l1 hear an almost ghostly voice whisper, Dorothy Albright, S'62-Summa Cum Laude! Dedication Fifty years ago this month an attractive young girl stepped up to the center of the Philharmonic Auditorium stage and delivered a graduation speech. The occasion was Los Angeles High School's 1912 commencement exercises. The at- tractive senior was Dorothy Albright. A few days from now another June graduation will take place for Miss Albright. This Friday, almost 50 years to the day that she received her diploma, Miss Albright will retire from the facul- ty of her alma mater. In the intervening half century since Miss Albright was graduated from Rome, she has crammed a busy lifetime of interesting experiences. At Stanford her major professor was the famed psychologist, Dr. Lewis M. Terman, with whom she worked on the Stanford Revision of the Binet I.Q. test. After earning her degree from Stanford, Miss Albright did graduate work at Columbia University. Her summers away from her graduate studies were spent as the tutor of the grand- daughter of P. Morgan, Sr., who in his lifetime was one of the richest and most powerful men in the world. Appointed a psychologist with the U.S. Veterans Bureau in 1920, Miss Albright did pioneering work as a psychologist and speech specialist in neuro-psychiatric hospitals. But in 1925 her' abiding affection for L.A. High drew her back to Rome, and on Feb. 14, 1925, she began a teaching career here that has continued uninterruptedly for 37 years. Versatility is a word that is appropriate in describing Miss Al- bright's teaching career at L.A. High. Among the subjects she has taught are life science, swimming Qshe was one of the first instructors when Oliver Pool was opened the year the 1952 Olympic games were held in this cityj, badminton, tennis, corrective physical education, English, contempo- rary American problems, and world geography.
