DR. EENEDICT l.UPlCA V Born in New York City in 1903, graduated from the De Witt Clinton High School in 1922, Dr. Benedict Lupica completed a course of study at the City College of New York and went on to the New York University where he received his B.S. and M.A. degrees in 1929 and 1931. Early interest in the healing -arts resulted in proficiency in the science of physical therapy and his subsequent appointment as Physical Therapy Aide to the Veteran's Administration and the United States Public Health Service in which capacity he served from 1940 to 1943. He took his chiropractic degree in 1944 at the Standard lnstitute of Chiropractic in New York where he later became an instructor. With the amalgamation of the chiropractic colleges in New York he received a tach- ing appointment in the new institution, which eventually led to the Acting Deanship. 4 ln addition to his extensive academic background, Dr. Lupica has spent a- total of thirteen years in private practice which help to tit' him admirably for his present position as administrative dean of the Los Angeles College of Chiropractic. Dr. Raymond H. Houser, a graduate of the National College of Chiropractic at Chicago lllinois, and author of several books including Visceral ln- nervation, the Graphic Aid Series and co-author of Chiropractic Principles and Practice, is now serving as assistant dean at the Los Angeles College of Chiropractic. Although born in Kansas, Dr. Houser fondly regards California as his home. e College work is not new to Dr. Houser, hav- ing been on the faculty at the National College on two separate occasions from 1937 to 1939 and again from 1946 to 1947. We as students indeed feel 'fortunate to have a man of Dr. Houser's capa- bilities on the staff of our college. MR. WILLIAM H. DAUGHTREY Bursar DR. RAYMOND H. HOUSER ' DR. J. INTERN T 1 1 The Los Angeles College of Chiropractic Clinic has a three-fold purpose. First, to make the clinic the best equipped and best staffed institution of its kind in the world. Second, to give to the intern a thorough training in conducting a complete physical examination. Third, to render to the community a service of which we can all be iustly proud. ln order to reach these obiectives the school has adopted a departmental system of examining each new patient. Every patient is seen by at least ten interns before the examina- tion is completed, giving the intern practical experience never before attained in a chiropractic clinic. The physical examination has been divided into the following five departments: H1 case history: f2j eye, ear, nose and throat: 13, chest and abdomen: f4j pelvic, and 151 spinal anal- ysis and extremities. Each department is staffed with two interns who, after spending two days in a department, rotate to the next division. While the intern is getting this practical experience in the departments, he is assisted by licensed doctors with years of experience and who are specialists in the department in which they teach. Q After the physical examination has been completed, a clinician discusses the case with the intern: if X-rays or laboratory tests are indicated, an order is written to that effect and diag- nosis withheld until all vital information is in. The Los Angeles College of Chiropractic is very fortunate and proud to have installed at the clinic one of the best and most modern X-ray and clinical laboratories in the city. ln charge of these departments are doctors of many years experience in leading laboratories and promi- nent Los Angelesdtospitals, giving to the patient and intern, as well as doctors in the field, the very latest in laboratory diagnosis. Treatment is outlined with emphasis not only on the correction of the vertebral lesions, but upon correction of the entire posture. Adiunctive treatment such as physiotherapy, dietary supplements and psychotherapy are not withheld in cases where they are needed. The purpose of the above outlined system is to train the intern to examine, diagnose and treat the existing condition of his patient completely and competently. Also to teach him to correlate the physical findings and symptoms with the vertebral subluxations. Stressing more and more the importance and efficacy of the adjustment of vertebral lesions, future doctors will sell chiropractic and endow their patients with chiropractic philosophy. We, as doctors and interns, are obligated to the patients who come to this clinic for treat- ment. We owe them the very best that we have in examining, in diagnosing, and treating. All of this is our duty and it means that we must never cease to acquire more and more knowledge through study and research. We must continue to strive to perfect our science to a very fine art by fulfilling the above and giving the student the training and experience necessary for him to take his place in practice with the attitude and professional ethics of a public servant. Then and only then, can we command and hold the respect of the general public-raising ourselves in their esteem as we prove our ability and integrity. 1 Q, e ,X srunfur Bonv r . - NORTH CAMPUS ml n ig --,, 21' ' Orrin-Rs lt is increasingly evident, with the passage of time, that the North Campus is indeed proving to be fertile soil for student development. ' Progress in organization has been rapid among the underclassmen, the latest group of freshmen having recently completed the election of class officers: C Enthusiasm among the newer students is high owing to their recent introduction into the science of their chosen profession, and they are eagerly looking forward to col- lege careers and years of successful practice. ' The first social event was a dance sponsored by the sophomore class to raise money for the athletic fund. lt was held in the auditorium of the South Campus at which time the new freshmen were welcomed by the dean and the student body president. The basketball team is the first endeavor in the field of athletic sports, and we wish them every success. To those on the threshold of college life, we of the graduating class wish all undergraduates a happy and successful career. NIGHT STUDENT BODY Although the maiority of students on the campus of the Los Angeles College of Chiro- practic are to be found in the classrooms during the day, not an lnconsiderable number have for the past four years studied diligently at night. Many of the original group have since trans- terred to the day student body, but those remaining to finish their scholastic careers by night have won the admiration of their fellow students. - The night students have contributed to every phase of extra-curricular activity when- ever possible and have sponsored parties and dances of their own. The monthly meetings of the night student body were often attended by day students who stayed to enioy the refreshments that were inevitably a part of every program. The Esprit de Corps, serious attitude and tenacity of purpose of this group ls noteworthy. We are indeed proud of this portion of our graduating class. SOUTH CAMPUS As. ,.. 2- -'-1-P STUDENT BUDY I 94 5' o OFHCERS 1947 The center of activity of the college is found in the student body, and it together with the administration, form the nucleus of any school. Here, components of all orga- nizations meet with one purpose. Problems common to all are discussed, plans formu- lated, attitudes voiced, legislation accomplished in true democratic fashion. ln no other body is the emphasis placed upon the student so strongly. Meetings embody every kind of program, and the multiplicity of activities range from carnlvals and dances to educa- tional films and lectures. The program of the meeting is the clearing house for informa- tion and the medium of communication for administrative messages. The officers of the student body are elected for a term of six months and include a president, vice president, secretary and treasurer. Recently the present group of offl- cers instituted an alternate program plan by which a combined meeting of both campuses can be held on every second meeting date. These ioint sessions usually include profes- sional or semi-professional entertainment. Often talent from the student body ls selected for the programs which elicits gratifying response from the audiences. Founded at Los Angeles in 1925, Sigma Chi celebrates itstwenty- third birthday this year. It has expanded during its life to include undergraduate chapters at other chiropractic colleges. The alumni are representing the fraternity in every state in the na- tion and in many foreign countries. The activities of the fraternity are numerous and varied. lt sponsors an annual conven- tion,.drawing alumni from all points of the compass to renew acquaintances. Hell Week is tradi- tional ending with Hell Night for the neophytes, at which time they are properly initiated infor- mally. Following the informal, at a later date the traditional formal initiation and dance is held when the pledges are presented with the Sigma Chi Omega pin, and welcomed by representa- tives from the Supreme Council. The educational program includes speakers from our own as well as allied professions, lecture demonstrations and chapter sponsored study aids. lt has long been the custom to dc-vote a portion of each program to guidance of the undergraduate in ethical con- cepts of practice and conduct. f A DELTA PHI Sl . , Z . ,Q 'I '1x::,iu1'. r , . - : ' DELTA PHI Sl - OFFICERS Delta Phi Psi was founded in 1933 by Dr. C. J. Joyant, a faculty member of the Los An- geles College of Chiropractic. Since that time the membership has increased steadily and now includes members as far afield as New Zealand, Sweden, Argentina and South America. The aims of the fraternity are to further chiropractic and improve the quality of profes- sional education. lt is a democratic organization whose members are chosen with regard for scholastic ability, character and integrity. The social program includes picnics, banquets, and dances for the members and their families. The educational and more serious side of the fra- ternity's functions include guest speakers from the field at the regular meetings. The fraternity has among its membership several doctors of national prominence includ- ing the late Dr. Ralph W. Stewart for whom the American Legion Post No. 636 was named. Dr. Stewart was lost in the Pacific while on duty aboard the Yorktown. The Supreme Council is composed of eleven members headed by Dr. H. Butterfield and Includes Dr. M. B. Strahl of the Los Angeles College faculty. L C. C. A. STUDENT UNIT ,f N I PUS f ORTH CAM Wxxxxullil:rf,W X fglfq f ii f-7 'QR nap If w x 13 A, C. C. A. A charter was received and the organization became a regu- lar feature of the extra-curricular activities of the college. Since that time the chapter has re- quested and been granted a charter in the National Chiropractic Assoclation, the chapter being named in honor of Dr. Wilma Churchill. The Student Unit emulates the parent organizations in its aims to protect and foster the philosophy, science and art of chiropractic, to insure the profession proper recognition, to ald ln the Chiropractic Research Foundation, and to raise the educational standards of the colleges. , The keynote of the unit is organization, stressing the need for unity among the profes- sion and encouraging a high standard of professional conduct and ethics. The monthly meetings of the chapter are essentially of an educational nature, featuring field speakers, demonstrations and educational moving pictures. ln addition to regular business, problems of the school, organization and students are discussed. The result of this type of orga- nizatlon is to send forth a student into the field that ls prepared to assume organlzatlonal work and who will have a working knowledge of the state and national organizational functions. AMERICAN LEGl0N RALPH W. STEWART POST No. 636 p AMERICAN LEGloN RALPH W. STEWART POST No. 636 OFFICERS The Ralph W. Stewart American Legion Post No. 636 was organized in January 1946, and was named after the first chiropractor to lose his life in World War ll. lt is with particular pride that this post commemorates this clean-cut American lad who was exemplary of chiropractic tradition, ideals and practice. . The first commander of the post was Dr. Thomas G. Kirby, formerly an instructor at the Los Angeles College of Chiropractic. The primary purpose of the American Legion as a whole is, of course, to keep alive and active the ideals and spirit of Amerlcanism. The Ralph W. Stewart Post now numbering 120 members is composed of those ex-service men and women who are chiropractic students or licensed doctors. lt is rightly called a specialty post, for lt has a spe- cial lnterestf namely, that of furthering chiropractic, through education, social and athletic func- tions. Special classes have been, and are being, conducted by members of the chiropractic profes- slon who give unselfishly of their time, knowlede and experience. The Legion Auxiliary has been organized, the purpose of which ls to create and maintain a soclal interest among the members of the post. The post also sponsors the care of underprivi- leged children who would not otherwise receive chiropractic care. OMEGA CHI SIGMA Omega Chi Sigma, the only sorority on the campus, is the latest addition to the family of organizations at the l.os Angeles College. Formally organized in November of 1946, nine of the original twelve members now serve on the Supreme Council. The first formal initiation was held in the Hollywood Roosevelt's Aviation Room on De- cember 7, I946, and since then the Alpha Alpha Chapter has welcomed a new group of neo- phytes into the fold. The chapter has a traditional Hell Week and a Hell Night, much like that of its male counterpart, the fraternity. Their objectives as stated by the iaws ofthe sorority are to gain international recognition in all recognized chiropractic colleges, to encourage fellowship and social welfare, to present an educational program which will develop higher standards of education and ethics among women doctors, and encourage closer cooperation among all mem- bers of the profession. lt is 'the desire of the members of the sorority to establish alumni chapters in order that they may continue their activities upon entering their professional careers. rn THESTUDENT councug N new a of Wentz sox: o 'pd Fund' 1-I qu 5, owenxso 0039039 0 'Qs- G-I-yo AW xfogvd Q :wa QIXNOQ 'vo 4,, lv be o 4 0 'Q , fb , o o,,, - 0 Qs 'll 0, 'lv 'fa '01, , ' Q Mo' gqho W1 fo o,,v 4 The Student Council is composed of the heads of all the maior organizations on the campuseand ls presided over by the student body president acting as chalrman. Many hours of labor, writing and rewriting, plus miles of leg work have gone into this endeavor by willing hands and minds. We have no regrets, we make no apologies and we ask no reward other than simple appreciation for compiling the yearbook, in the production of which we did our level best. It is the sincere desire of the staff that our labors shall not have been in vain, and that we shall have, in a small measure, paved the- way for future generations of Aesculapians.
