The main engines which push the l7,000-ton Los Angeles, come under the watchful eyes ot the Mike Division. M men must keep the engines and various pumps and lubrication systems running smoothly and efficiently. A pair ot engines are located in each of two engine rooms, which operate as separate units. lt necessary, each engine can be operate independently ot the other. Together they total more than l20,000 horsepower. Taking the salty water from the sea and producing fresh water from it with the ship's evaporators is another big iob tor the lvl Division.

vu-F Fulton came up with an idea way back when, and from his idea was born a new rate in the Navy: boilerman. From that time on, the boilerman has played an important part in shipboard lite. Many of us take for granted the power which enables us to keep pace with the fast carriers of our task force. We seem to forget that without the con- centrated efforts of B Division the entire ship would cease to function. Except for a few flashlights and two emergency diesel generators, nothing runs aboard ship that is not basically dependent on her boilers. Baker Division is also responsible for the storage and distribution of water and fuel.
