Drone 1 a small radio controlled pilot-less aircraft used for gunnery practice. The 3l8-pound oversized model airplanes are used to simulate aircaft making diving, straflng, and Torpedo runs. Traveling at speeds up to l85 knots, they prove to be quite a match for our anti-aircraft batteries. Drones are from the ship and catapulted radio controlled in flight. When the flight ends or a lucky hit has been scored, a parachute is released, also by radio, and the drone drifts slowly to the vvater. lt is retrieved and the KD Division person- nel go over it to repair any damage that might have been inflicted and rebuild the engines.
