E xx il 7 1 1 Admirals have maneuvered their fleets and controlled their ships by means of visual signals for many generations and today's Navy the signalman-quartermaster is still a very important figure. These men are grouped together in the OS Division which transmits and receives all the ship's visual communications. ' Each of the signalmen, to be adept, must be thoroughly familiar with the three types of visual communications. The semaphore, is at rapid means of communication for short distances in daylight, the flaghoist is the most rapid and accurate way to maneuver a fleet when its units are within easy range for signaling. ' Still another method of communications lemploying morse codel is the flashing light. ln port it is the OS Division's iob to watch the movements of ships and boats so that the officer-of-the-deck can be alerted of the arrival or passage of a senior officer, to enable the proper rendering of honors.
