Captain Jacob W. Waterhouse, USN, a native of Wheeling, West Virginia, and a i929 graduate of the Naval Academy, assumed command of the USS Los Angeles in Long Beach on 7 January l955. Prior to that, the Captain had commanded the USS Estes, an amphibious command ship, which carried the flag of Rear Admiral Lorenzo S. Sabin, USN, while the Admiral was directing the evacuation of the Tachen Islands. . The Captain has spent most of his afloat career in destroyer type ships, including command of USS Luce, a radar picket which was sunk by a kamakaze attack during the battle for Okinawa. For his part in this action, Captain Waterhouse was awarded the Silver Star. After V-J Day, the Captain served as Commanding Officer of GroPac at Tangku lthe port of Tientsinl. l-lis performance there won him the Bronze Star and an additional decoration by the Nationalist Govern- ment of China. Rear Admiral Frederick B. Warder, USN, assumed command of Cruiser Division Five in September i954 after service as Deputy Chief of Staff to the Com- mander-in-Chief, Atlantic Fleet. A native of Grafton, West Virginia, the Admiral graduated from the Naval Academy in i925 and reached flag rank in September l952. Though be has had considerable cruiser duty lincluding a tour as commanding officer of USS Colum- busl, the Admiral's maior naval interest has been the submarine service. He has filled a variety of billets there, from supervision of the construction of USS Seavvolf .... which ship he later commanded .... to command of the Submarine School at New London. As skipper of the Seawolf, the Admiral completed seven war patrols and earned the Navy Cross with gold star in lieu of a second award. Later, he served as commander of Submarine Division l22 and led one of the first Wolfpack operations in the Pacific. R ll lllllliilli l.li. llllRH R
