Her ideas, comments, and occasional bizarre behavior added to the meetings. Advisor, Mr. Smid- derks, provided that necessary element, input from the administration. Together they worked to improve administration - faculty - student relations and to keep the council members in line. Next on the list was Vice-President Kari Kuenn. She took care of all the Student Assembly registration business, handled the poinsettia sale with Katie. Ioe Koh was the Secretary. Blessed with a skill to pluck the keys, he always had his minutes prepared on time and reada- ble. He also provided input from the ninth and tenth grades. The Commissioner of Public Relations was Ian Mears. She took over the chore of making posters for special events, games, and anything else. She also made it a habit to post minutes from every meeting on each of the school's bulletin boards. Her creativity and enthusiasm was a bonus for the council. Bob Layton led the Social Life. As Commissioner of Activities it was his job to plan and carry out all Senior High activi- ties with some new, he added to the usual routine. The Spiritual Life on campus was led by Dawn Turner. With her witness and enthusiasm, she became a true example for C-od. In Council she spoke about the concerns and problems on campus relating to Spiritual Life. She held an impor- tant post and served well. The Baptist Finances were kept in order by the honorable Ka Ming Li. His duties included supervising the student store and balancing the books. Ka Ming also contributed an assortment of jokes and puns in each meeting. As Commissioner of Finance he proved most effective. The Commissioner of Athletics and Awards was Lorne Mattner. He did a fine job providing the students, and carried out his duties to the fullest, speaking out for the athletes of the school at council meetings. Sue Farris acted as Yearbook Editor. Under her firm hand the staff put together that yearly school publication, Scroll. However, not only did she contribute endless hours and bottles of Rubber Cement to the Yearbook cause, she also worked in Council. Together the Student Council tried to make the school year successful. Though at first they were inexperi- enced, they had the determination to do the best job possible. An annual responsibility taken on by the Spiritual Life Committee is the Christmas Project. On December 14, 1979, about one hundred children, ages one to twelve, were waiting for them. Under the The S irtual Life Committe is one of great importance to Los Angeles Baptist High School The rea- direction of World Opportunities they organized a talent show, the giving of gifts, singing, Christmas Q cartoons and the provision of refreshments. This Outreach gave the opportunity of giving some of our time to share the love of Christ with the children, in a spiritual way. ln chapel, we hear speakers, listen to music, watch films, and receive a better under- standing of what is vital in the walk of a Christian. This time is a Worshipful experience when students can move adide from the pressure of the school and examine their lives spiritually. The Spiritual Life , Committe offers suggestions as to what type of Chapels would be good in order to make an impact on , the students. The Spiritual Life Committe discusses and works on other areas, but the Big Brother!Big Sister Pro- gram, the Christmas Project and the chapel services are the most important and they all have major importance every year. They hope, as a Spiritual Life Committee, that they can set a pace for the years l to come and God will be glorified. With 11 veterans and many good players up from the I.V.'s, this season looked promising. In the first game against La Verne Lutheran, they took a 21-0 half- time lead and went on to win 27-18. They led a very good Fillmore team at the half only to lose 21-7,The low point ofthe season was when Mike Buchanan broke his leg against Whittier. The Goens brothers, Mark and Greg, led the team on offense. Greg showed much poise and an exceptionally strong arm. The line this year was mostly Iun- iors led by All-League second team cen- ter Steve Owen and guard Iohn Mears. The defense was led by All-League line- backer Gary Ide, Ernie Negrette, and Tim Burns. Mark Goens rushed for over 800 yards and provided the fans with many long runs. The Knights ended the season with a convincing win over Lutheran. Another win over Fill- more and Neville's team was into the final. Notre Dame of Riverside, our next opponent, emerged victorious in an exciting 80-65 game. Ardavanis and Pat Fields were named to the All-tournament team. A loss to Bell-Ieff finished the pre-season and the Knights had a 5-4 record. Tragedy struck as Lorne Mattner broke his collarbone and the team was at 11. A loss and a win put the team in the middle of the Olympic League Pack. Four more losses came and the Knights' outlook on playoffs dim- med. An exciting win at Ontario broke the streak, but another streak of three games soon followed. Illness to Todd Beal brought the roster down to 10. The highlight of the season followed when the Knights played play- off-bound Avalon in a non-league game. The game ended with our team winning 107-71. Two losses at the end of the season left a record of 9 and 13. Scott Ardavanis and Pat Fields were selected as All-Olympic League performers. Throughout the year every ball player helped in some way. Other standout performers included Dave Schuler, Ion Gerlach, Todd Fisaier, Mark Gordon, Ion Scott, Iohn Allen, Curt Ganther and Mike Os orne. an i 3. 1. Fish at the line. 2. Yes, Coach Gomez is amazing, but he could not have done it without players like Ion Haar, Chris Monroe, Ion Oatey, Tim Ander- son and Leonard Iones. Along with other outstanding con- tributors like Mike Ellensohn and Mike Domke, the Knights couldn't help winning. Ion I-laar led the I.V.'s from his forward position, in scoring and rebounding and Mike Ellensohn did a superb job at the guard position utilizing his fine shooting touch. Leonard Iones, alias Fleetfoot Iones, did an excellent job of dribble breaking presses and making moves Walter Davis would be proud of. Freshman Ion Oatey also did an unbelievably consistent job of rebounding and shooting. Look out Lutheran and Brethren, Mr. Oatey has three years left. Last, but certainly not least is swingman Chris Monroe. Chris exhibited amaz- ing hustle, this, blended with fine shooting and rebounding made Chris the best sixth man in the league. But, no team would be complete with the men who come off the bench. Players such as Matt MacArthur, Todd Brooks, Pete Cerlach, filled their most difficult job as any champion- ship players would. With most of this I.V. team advancing to Varsity we hould have a good Varisty squad in years to come. Good luck guys. I. V. BASKFTBALL I 65 F ro h asketball The Frosh Basketball team had a very thriving sea- son. The players may have been young, but it never hindered their performances. The team was unoffi- cially led by Greg Fields, guard. Another good player is Dean Russu. The big man in the middle is Scott Miller. Greg Ritter showed his shooting and rebounding skills in the second half. Hugh DiPretore played forward well scoring several points a game. The team, led by Phil Iennings and assisted by Greg Adkins, finished off the year with a tremendous showing of 7 and 3 in the league. Coach Iennings and Adkins attributed the suc- cess of the team to stronger discipline during practice than in the past seasons. In the opinion of one coach, the team had a tough time because of scarity of height. Exceptional skill in rebounding and a good offense that improved as the season progressed were the team's strongest points. 66 X FROSH BASKETBAI I Var ity ,,,,,...- 'M- ' Q M EEE ff:-Q ,gf v W' r uf ww A af li M ...W V. ef..-..-gnu' -. The team consists of veterans of Baptist Baseball and a fcw newcomers at the same time. This season should take the team all the way to playoffs with pitching from the fantastic three, Mark Goens, Todd Beal and Pat Fields. Runs will be scored with ease when you have power hitters like Mike Romero, Bob Travis and Scott Ardavanis. Under the coaching of Mr. Lewis, Mr. Days, and Mr. Neville. This team will be very successful. Among the rookies on this team are Matt MacArthur and Scott Miller. Both players are completely capable of handling the varsity status Scott plays third while Matt plays a strong defensive second baseman. And then of course, there is the hitting. With the switch-hit- ting ability of Scott Ardavanis he can show his power to all fields. Designated hitter Bob Travis shows his consistency by putting the team on the scoreboard. The clean-up.hitters do just that, clean-up. Ion Gerlach and Mike Romero pull their resources together to get the runs. The 1979-80 IV Baseball team had yet another impressive season. The team had a reputation to keep up that was sup- plied by the three previous Iunior Varsity teams. After three straight league championships. Coach Phill Iennings had his work cut out for him. Of the thirty players trying out, Bill Days and Coach Iennings could pick only sixteen of the most talented to represent our school. john Oatey and Chuck Heskett highlighted the pitching skills and any rare ball hit to the outfield was quickly inhaled by Ioe Koh, Ion Scott, or Dave Brown. The shortstop position was mastered brillantly by Rod Shackelford who contributed much more than could have been expected of him. Pete Cerlach provided both offensive and defensive strength. Both at the plate with a bat and on second base with a glove, Cerlach showed his talent. A first place finish at the Morro Bay Invitational and a fourth place finish in CIF Prelimi- naries gave Chris the chance to run in CIF finals, but a sprained ankle spoiled his chances. Strong finishes by Ralph Salisbury and Mike Dorais always got the clutch points for the LAB victories. Greg Njoes, Rocky Washington, Paul Sherrill and Ken Aram always finished in the top half in their meets. But our promises to pay, to do, to go, to act, to give, etc. are only as good as ou willingness to see that we keep our word. lf our hopes for the future are built entirely on the promises of mankln we must be ready for disappointments. Sinful and even good intentioned men don't keep their promises Better t look toward a future of promise based upon an unchanging God whose word is absolute. His promises for th future are: 136 X PRINCIPAL'S PAGE The wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life. Romans 6:23 lf we confess our sin. . .He will cleanse us from all unrighteousness. I Iohn 1:9 . . .whoseoever believeth on Him shall have everlasting life. Iohn 3:16 Trust in the Lord and do goodg so you shall dwell in the land and enjoy security. Take delight in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 37:3 8: 4 In my Father's house are many mansions. . . I go to prepare a place for you. Iohn 14:2 Seek and know the Lord and your promise for the future will be bright both in time and in eternity. . . - Gary Smidderks At Baptist l-ligh, the real promise of the future lies with the grad- uats. They as no one else. embody the spirit and ideals of the school. When graduates succeed, the school succeeds. Founded in 1962, the shcool has 18 years of proof that Christ- centered, life-oriented education produces young people of deep commitment and character. That is what the founders of the school believed: When they built the classroom wing on Woodley Avenue: When they built the athletic field and locker room wing in 1965 When they added the gymnasium in 1971. Parents have also believed. Enrollment has been at maximum since 1977 Cover 7001 with four qualified applicants being turned down for every student acepted. This cannot continue. The origi- nal plans for Baptist High called for 1,000 students, a promise the administration inteds to keep. What then is the Promise of the Future for the school? It is sim- ply this: early construction of a new classroom wing paralleling Lasse Street north of the red brick building. Some funds have already been earmarked for this purpose from the year's Annual Funds Appeal. An architect has drawn preliminary plans with a view to making early acceptanced of bids on a new building a reality. ln fact, next year's Annual Funds Appeal will concentrate on raising the dollars necessary to proceed with early ground- breaking. Sound exciting? It is! We could very easily have over 900 stu- dents by fall of 1981. The secret: prayer, faith. and generous giving. Do you believe that? If you do, the new building will visibly rise beginning as early as fall, 1980. And all things whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive. Matthew 21:22 ,tt f .... tits . .. .
