Los Amigos was proud to pre- sent one of the unforgetable events of l 982, the spec- tacular Homecoming Assembly. It started out with the Lobo band parading through the gym in their elegant, classy, black uniforms while performing a few lively tunes. The entertainment con- tin ued with our very own macho seniors guys appearing in sweaters and skirts to demonstrate their extraordi- nary techniques as cheerleaders with style. Oh yes, let us not forget those sexy legs in action! However, the show was not over yet. The highlight of the event was when some of Los Amigoss talented teachers decided to get into the act. They took part in a short, comedy slrit called 'Slow Times at L.A. High , a talxe off of a current movie, Fast Times at Ridgemont High of l 982. The crowd was fascinated with excitement and ap- peared to be full of spirits for the football game that evening against Santiago at Garden Grove Stadium. 46 Homecoming Assembly f? Model Co-Ed Fashions The 1 98 3 Co-Ed candidates really strutted their stuff at the an- nual fashion show held in the Little Theater, Jan. 5, during lunch. King candidates and their sponsors modeled current fashions for the student body so everyone could get an idea of what to wear on the night of the Co-Ed dance, Feb. 5. This noon-time show also provided an opportunity to introduce the king candidates to the student body. Teacher Dave Auxier, decked out in a white tuxedo, narrated the show as the king candidates wore different colored tuxedoes, pro- vided by Arrow Tux Shop. The girls' dresses were color co-ordinated to the tuxes, and were shorter this year than in the past. Dave Auxier narrates. 5 55' F E Candidates and sponsors: St:-aighten Up. The Lobos awoke to a constant down pour of rain and as the storm continued, so did the puddle in the quad, which quickly became the Lobo Lake. The lake made it difficult to walk from one side of the school to the other without using bridges made of stacked two by fours. Students had to move their cars from the parking lot, for it too became a lake. This made several of the cars look like boats or sub- marines. Yet, the disturbance at Los Amigos was small: many schools were shut down. It was not only because of damage, but several schools were evacua- tion stations. The weather also brought in a tornado that hit Los Angeles. Ten houses had their roofs torn off and several cars were over turned. Many piers were distroyed and others badly damaged. The estimat- ed value in damages was S30 million in Orange County alone. 56 Lobo Lake 'bm Lobos Pump Iron Daily Last summer construction began on the second phase of the expansion of the out- door weight lifting facility by the P..E.'. lock- er room. The Booster Club provided money, materials and labor for this enlargement, and the Lettermens Club, through various fundraisers, donated the stereo system which loudly entertained the athletes dur- ing their workouts. Coach Dave Auxier, along with Booster Club members, spent many hours during the summer pouring concrete, constructing the fence, painting the equipment, and in- stalling the stereo system. Speakers were installed in both the indoor and outdoor weight rooms. The football players were placed on a pro- gram to gain strength and body weight. The athletes were striving for improvement and increased speed and power through this program. Each coach developed his or her program according to needs of each particular sport. First and sixth periods were the busiest for the equipment, although the P.E. classes also utilized the machines. Matt Moore Darren Grudt Sandy getting tough! Many students seemed to let music dictate their wardrobe more than ever. Mean- while, other students stuck strictly to the books, al- ways referring to fashion magazines as their guides. The tuxedo look was the toast of the town. The first day of school looked more like a restaurant with most students dressed in wing-tipped collared shirts, bow ties, baggy pants, cumberbunds and patent leather shoes. Lobos were constantly shopping: if its not South Coast Plaza, it 's Thrift World or some other local thrift store. Mods were always visible. Parkas, berets, thin ties, double-breasted jackets, scarves, hats, vests and pointed shoes made the best dressed Mod man. 50's Wear became very popular by second semester. Everyone wore shirts with no sleeves, fuller skirts, petticoats, Levi jackets, mom 's dresses, stone washed jeans, wing-tipped shoes, hushpuppies, fishnet stock- ings, pumps with anklets, cuffed 501 1s and G'ed up hair, made the well dressed rock-a-billy. Lobos had a closet full of shirts with puffy sleeves, I- Zods, Oxford shirts, seamed stockings, varnets with bermuda shorts and mini skirts. Styling was the main thing in mind: argyles, plaids, stripes or polk-a- dots, as long as it was in!!! The I 983 Reflector staff was very productive with the first semester staff consisting of 35 people, but dwindling to 22 at the start of the second semester. The editors were seniors Trisha Jenkins and Lynette Stotts. Together with advisors Mrs. Car- ol Strauss, the co-editors kept the staff on their toes to meet deadlines, choose pictures and write copy, besides doing their own pages too. The staff did many new things as well as some old things. As they have for the past few years, they attended the annual district pizza party in October at Chuck E. Cheeses, where all seven high school yearbook staffs were guests of Rob- erts' Studio. This was the first year the theme of the book was publicized to the student body. Not only did Lobos hear about the theme, the staff wore t- shirts with the theme, We're Having a Party printed on them. The staff also had candy molds made-to-order WM in the shape of the Lobo, and took turns making chocolate and orange-colored suckers to sell to the student body as a fund-raising project. .away 5-J 'N-A., Co-editors Trisha Jenkins and Lynette Stotts. During the year, journalists attend- ed worlrshops to enhance their skills and sharpen their minds. The journalism class 6 was very small even with Journalism 1-4 in S . the same class period. The Paw Prints pub- lished nine issues which were seen all over campus on Fridays. In the spring the class entered several local contests, and wrote press releases for the local papers on cam- pus events. They also participated in Open House by serving salads. Many of the class were members of the California Scholastic Press Association and participated in press conferences, the NBC Studio Tour and other events. The seniors also competed for journalism scholarships through the CSPA. Editor-in-chief: Julie Berger Advisor Carol Strauss Newspaper l 07 m SE College Bound C.S.I f was one of two honor soci- eties on campus this year. C.S.F. stands for the California Scholar- ship Federation. Members must apply for the previous semester. The requirements were basically that a student must have had academic classes with three A's and one B, at least, in these classes. There was not a G.P.A. re- quirement, but of course most students carried a B+ average or higher. If a person was a member for four semesters then he or she could become a Gold Sealbearer. This seal was put on the diploma at graduation and looked very nice on college transcripts. Not all C.S..F'. members became Gold Sealbearers. If they did not they could still enjoy the honor of be- longing the semester they were in the club and could list member- ship on job and college applica- tion. Spanish Club Aims For Mexico City The Spanish club was ad- vised by Mr. Chuck Donnelly. The club had regular meet- ings and several fund raisers, such as a Tootsie Roll and Milk Duds sale to raise mon- ey to take a trip to Mexico City in the summer. Ten of the fifteen members atteded Spanish Camp at Camp Whittle in May. For Open House, the club members sponsored a booth where they sold quesadillas. There are approximately l 50 Vietnam- ese students on campus, and at least l 00 were active in the Vietnamese club. The club has been very busy throughout the year, starting off with a Christmas party, which included exchanging gifts and dancing. The Tet, Vietnamese New Year, was celebrated on Feb. 16, and a giant show was held at Santa Ana Valley High School. It was like a big Vietnamese tal- ent show. Los Amigos had two partici- pants in the show, just as several other high schools from Orange County. The Vietnamese club also participated in Open House, with a parasol dance, which is used to celebrate spring. They raised money by selling egg rolls and fried shrimp chips during the pot luclr dinner. One of their social events was held in the commons. It was a spring school dance, for Vietnamese, with pop and rock music. Language Dinner I I 3 114 Faculty VWns In Sudden Death, 34-3 Come on, walk like this. . . On March 7, 1983, in the Los Amigos gym, the faculty mem- bers, lead by Dave Auxier and John Keating, took a surprising lead in the first half of the donkey basket ball game. Captain Keat- ing, with only two seconds on the clock, shot a basket from the cen- ter of the key. This shot gave the faculty a l4 point lead at half time over the varsity students, who were lead by Andy Tarango and Dave Olson. This made the score l 4-28. In the second half of the game, the faculty and the students ex- changed donkeys. Possibly due to the change of courts and donkeys, the varsity team made an unex- pected comeback. The students were more in control in the sec- ond half than the faculty. The tough defense of the varsi ty students made it look like the fac- ulty members were giving the ball away, as many of the faculty passes were intercepted by the varsity students. At the end of the second half, the score was 32 to 32, sending the game into over- time. Coach Mike Anderson shot the last shot that won the game for the faculty. The main reason the donkey basketball game was held was to raise money for sport equipment. , 3 I M i ke.-4. M. W M., V gg Dave Olson and his faithful donkey. Q dl 9 M3 What? After placing 3rd in league, with a record of 6-4, it was questionable whether the team would even go to CIF They went and made it all the way to the semi-finals. The team entered the league finals on a high because of a near win over long time rival La Quinta High School. Every match consisted of l 8 games and the score was L.Q. 9 to LA. 8, when the number three doubles team Jill Moore and Truc Mai played to win, causing a tie: the games were counted and we lost. The loss didn 't depress the girls at all because they had come the closest to upsetting La Quinta 's undefeated record since l 976. The teams good playing came from lots of hard work that started in the summer for two hours every Wednesday. The two hour practices started to be an everyday event with the beginning of school. The potluck banquet was held on January l 0th in the faculty dining room. The most valuable was given to Mai Pham, and the most inspirational was given to Cindy Lechner. These awards were voted on by the team. The team consisted of six juniors and two freshmen. Only eight girls lettered because the spot for num- ber three doubles was shifted around and only one player was able to accumulate the ten games needed to receive a letter. This year's head coach was Dave Selph. The assistant coaches were Don Webster, Bob Chambers, Jeff Riggins, Dave Auxier, and Bob Cic- ero. 'l'T1e team spent many long and hard hours at practice everyday and it finally paid off when they beat our rival school, La Quinta, 21 to 0. The Lobos entered the Garden Grove League in a four way tie and then beat Garden Grove and Santiago. The team came out tied for first place with Rancho Alamitos at the end of league play. Activities were held such as the Hello Assembly, the Welcome Back Dance and of course Freshmen Orientation. The main event for October seemed to be the Homecoming game and crowning. In November came a great surprise, for the third consecutive year the varsity football team went to Clfi December came about with the traditional Christmas Assembly which included Santa Claus arriving on the electric cart. Along with the new year, January brought in the new semester. Half the school year was completed and now history, but at this time we also started basketball season. Besides Valentines Day, February was a time for the first formal dance. Yes, after many months of prepara- tion, the Co-Ed finally arrived on Feb. 5. With March came our' own versions of Open House and the Sadie Hawkins dance. April tossed in the baseball season, and the relief of spring vacation. In May came the Prom, for some it was the last formal dance, but for others, it was just the beginning. June was a time for cele- brating: graduation arrived, school was out and summer was in.
