When this cost is eagerly shared by many able students, the project becomes magnetic, takes on an 1 El Farol editors, Jessie Cotkin, Dan Ulrich, and Dee Zook, skillfully selected material to be published in the campus lantern, the beams of which highlighted the many and varied events at Los Altos and helped focus special attention on matters most vital to both faculty and studentry. electrifying interest. Under other circumstances, the activity assumes the characteristics of an unwanted burden. It's unfortnuate that so few able students are willing to support so worthy an activity, neverthelss, we can point with pride to the heroic efforts of those few who under Mr. Holmberg's able guidance managed so excellently, At left are pictured Joe Sandoval and Bob Ordez, two of the corps who learned how to operate all equipment purchased by the AudiofVisual Depart' ment. The boys are shown checking out a protector prior to its delivery - a built-in courtesy Mr. An- derson so thoughtfully insisted upon. With an efficiency born of urgent necessity - all 900 of us clamored for serv- ice - and a skill developed by constant performance, this small group of boys set up proiectors and screens operated an assortment of equipment on request, made minor repairs, delivered tapes, discs, pic, tures, and models, and performed endless o'her tasks The boys who managed this excellent service are pictured at right, Seated from left 'Q hgh' are N Fox, G Fleckenstein, 3 Pangel, P Sullivan, Mr. N. By participating on any one of the seven committees here pictured, the girls of Los Altos High School set standards for others to follow. For example, Scholarship and Welfare raised money and food baskets for the needy families of our community. And while it may not be known to most students, visitors have commented very favorably on our pleasing and sensible dress habits. Well, the accolades for this one should go to Cam- pus Dress, for it is they who have set up the rules which have worked out so favorably for all. Social and Ways and Means planned the many events we so much enioyed, while it was Publicity that informed us about them. Of course these events would be dull indeed were it not for Decoration which so ably managed theme and other necessary frills. Remember the Christmas Dance and the Girls' League Formal? Decorations took care of those too. Though the halls were decora- ted to the rafters, it would count for little were it not for the goodies served up by that lovable Refreshment Committee. Names? Why, they are Jim- aline Jones, Harraline Case, and Tracaline Dartt. Dangerous circus animals and out-of-thisd world characters were found milling about at the Annual Girls' League Reception Party for mixed-up and bewildered freshmen. Say, are they that dum-that is, don't they have any sen-gosh, aren't they stupi-oh, heck, you know what I mean. .4-'X '-u.. 78 The year's activities got off with a bang at open- ing dance in the Hacienda to welcome lost Frosh. But you know now that I think on it a bit, l do believe we were iust o bit too helpful. Why Those freshmen kept coming in unending numbers, fright- fully like an invasion by the all-devouring locust. Now we poor upper classmen haven't a corner to call our own. Goodness, we're outnumbered five to one. The new two-in-one look was stuffed into fatmen Louroine Case and Sandy Carnforth when they won the prize for the most original dress at the Girls' League Get-Acquainted Party. Julie Halquist posed as the strongest weakman that no circus wanted to hire when she won the prize for the funniest, 7 The band you see here added a touch ot so- phistication to the Christmas dance and pro- vided dreamy, danceable music. As you can probably guess, the Hacienda was so well at- tended that it became necessary to place the ensemble behind the lovely tree, But they didn't mind, it put 'em in a Christmassy mood, they said. Q A gay Christmas spirit prevailed throughout the annual Girls' League Christmas Dance. Being one of the dressier dances of the school year, it was also one of the more popular, giving all a chance to doll up and drift romantically to appropriate seasonal dance music. 3 1 xiii Tree, band, and all are shut off from view by these lovely dancing couples. And if you don't think we had a difficult time getting into the center of this crowd - well, we had to have help to fence off cameraman and equipment for iust two scant minutes. Let's hope for more dances like this one. Can this be our Mr. Switzer, or is this dated individual his grandfather? Yup, it's Mr. Switzer starting football season with a bit of ancestral history. The raccoon coat and the dated Ford, so typical of the early days of the All-American sport, once again symbolize its opening days. October, a month of threatening clouds and long shadows, ushered in Cross Country time. The runners were understandably pleased with the failure of the mercury to reach the high numbers, and this was reflected in their nearly perfect record. We're proud of our League Champs, hobgoblins or not. T, lt is rather ironic that Thanksgiving should come during the most tragic month of the year for some of us. lt is then that the first report cards are issued and the purpose of our con- finement is driven home with particular force. Yes, we suddenly realize that summer is over and life is grimly earnest. The 1960 Los Altos Freshman baseball team end- ed its season with a record of four wins, four losses, and one tie. Their record books look even better when it is noted that their losses were to such larger schools as Covina, West Covina, and Rosemead - schools which in- cluded all their freshmen on the frosh teams. Due to the small size of our school, this year a number of freshmen were moved up to compete for the varsity and iunior varsity team positions, consequently, the LA frosh played without the services of a number of their classmates who would otherwise have been available. Even so, the four victories were highlighted by a pair of wins over the crosstown big brother, La Puente, by scores of 15-14 and 9-7, and a 12-O victory over CI fine Rosemead nine. The team was led at the plate early in the year by infielder Bob Bond and later by first baseman Mike Graham. Outfielder Paul Ross was a consistent hitter throughout the year. If the boys continue to im- prove as they did this year, they should make an outstanding contribution to our senior teams.
