The final score was T.P.S. 7, Loretto 0. A rainy evening in Hohenwald was tfte setting for the Mustangs’ only vic- tory. In a defensively dominated game, the Mustangs were a6le to slip past Lewis County by a score of 7-0. In the second home game of the season, the bleachers at Forsythe Field were filled as the Mustangs took on neighboring T. M. Rogers. By a score of 6-40, T. M. Rogers emerged as the victor. Chapel Hill came to Loretto tfte fol- lowing week to give the Mustangs their fifth loss by a score of 0-32. On Octo6er 2, the Mustangs trav- eled to Codinwood. As tlie final min- utes ticked away on tfte clock, the Mustangs had a 37-32 lead. But the Mustang defense was unable to stop the advancing Trojan offense. The final score was Loretto 37, Codinwood 39. A trip to Mt Pleasant did not turn out well for the Mustangs. Tftey were defeated 0-42. Tfie final fiome game of the season was played on Octo6er 21, against Waynesboro. Waynesboro was tfie winner 12-14. Pulaski was the final opponent in the 88 season for the Mustangs. Al- though they continued to play weft the Mustangs had slipped to a 5-6 over-ad record and a 2-2 district record by Christmas break. The second hedf of the regular sea- son didn't go wed for the Mustangs. They fast seven of their fast twelve games giving them a 10-13 season record and a 4-4 district record. A definite bright spot for the 1988-89 Mustangs was their District Tournament pfay. In the first round of the tournament they fed to fiost Mar- shall County. In the consolation game, the Mustangs soundfy defeated Hickman County by a score of 83-62 to claim third place in the tournament A disappointing two point loss to Macon County in the first round of the Regional Tournament ended the season for the Mustangs. With returning players and several newcomers the Lady Mustangs opened the season by defeating intra-county rival Lawrenceburg and by Seating district competitors Lewis6urg and Centerville. The Lady Mustangs con- tinued to play wed, ending the first half of the season with a 13-2 over- all record and a 4-0 district record. During Christmas break, the Lady Mustangs traveled to Florence to com- pete in the First Annual WTRT Girls Invitational Tournament. The Lady Mustangs overcame Wilson and an undefeated Deshler to make it into the finals. In the locally televised cham- pionship game, the Lady Mustangs subdued the Mars Hid Lady Panthers to bring home the championship tro- ?hy. A tough second half schedule found the Lady Mustangs losing four of their first five games. After wins against HohenwaCd and Lawrtnceburg the Lady Mustangs Be- gan to show signs of their early sea- son form. They went on to win five of the last seven games of the regular season. In the first round of the District Tournament the Lady Mustangs fed to Centerville. After a disappointing one point loss at the hands of Franklin Page in the consolation game the Lady Mustangs ended up in fourth place. At the Regional Tournament, a defeat by Springfield in the first round dashed the State Tournament hopes of the Lady Mustangs. Jerry Taylor and I.arrv Davis. After suffering through a wmiess season in l $$ the Mustangs ambition was to team to win. They accomplished this goaL Us- ing the season for improvement the Mustangs were in excedent conditum at unimanumt time. The regular sea- son ended with the Mustang taking a second place tie in District 9-AA play. Good pitching, excellent defense. and timely hits gave the Mustangs a mnner-up finish in the District Tour- nament and earned them a Regional Tournament berth. In the regional semifinals a 6-8 loss to Greenbrier ended the baseball season for the Mustangs. Although they only complied a record of 7-10, thus u am will be remembered for turning the Mustang baseball program around. Even though illness and injuries sidelined many key players during the season, the 1988-89 sea- son was a success for the girls tennis team. At the mid-season Middle Ten- nessee Team Conference Tournament, Hope Putman and Dawn Simbeck won first place for their respective seeds. They were also named to the Ad-Conference Team. The doubles team of Hope Putman and Dawn Simbeck won first place at the District Tournament in Columbia and earned a berth in the Regional Tournament at Murfreesboro. They were defeated in the semi-finals of the Regional Tournament.
