We are fortunate enough this year to have three foreign exchange students, Stefan Simon, Mark Josten, Curro Alfaro. The unique personality of each of these students makes the school year 1987-1988 a novel experience for the faculty and students at Loretto High. Mark Josten comes from a middle sized town near the border of the Netherlands in Germany and is staying with the Peter Etienne family. Here at Loretto he is learning a lot of English, but he is also acquiring this awful Tennessee slang. He comes to America to get the experience of living in another culture and for the fun of it. Also his goal is to acquire a knowledge of English, He plans on telling his family that his stay here has been a nice experience, and that he had a good time and that he met quite a lot of nette leute (nice people) during that time. Mark comments that the television is okay, but it would be better if you would leave out the soap operas and the commercials. He plans on visiting the U.S. again, but he doesn't think it would be in Loretto (perhaps for a short time). He is going to take home with him a C-D player and some more electronic equipment because that is almost all they allow you to take back. As Mark's visit comes to an end he states: War eine echt schone zeit und ich glaube, dass ich die U.S.A. trotz allem vermissen werde. Stefan Simon lives with his mother in an apartment house, in a town with about 60,000 inhabitants. It is around 10 miles from Cologne, a city with 1,000,000 people. A typical school day starts at 8 o'clock and lasts until about 3 o'clock. Each day you have 8 classes and have 11 different subjects a week. He thought coming to America would be a different experience for him to learn how to live in a different society. He says the T.V. show selection here is too big and he never knows what he should watch, but you always have good movies. He doesn't like the commercials interrupting all the time. After he returns home, he will go two more years to the secondary school then he must go to the army for two years. At the end of his army training he is planning to go to the University. Stefan replies that he would want to come back during the holidays, but he has no particular plans on what he will do when he returns. As Stefan's visit comes to an end he states: Vielen dank fur die gute zeit die ich hier verbracht habe!
