This is the couple that the crowd chose to be Miss Ugly LHS. Mr. Augustin and Candy Story paint a picture of the old Loretto High School while Sherry Richardson is inspecting. Russell Methvin and Stephanie Gooch participate in our Halloween dress up day. They are dressed as street bums, gathering what other people wouldn't have. Mrs. Earnest and Ginger Staggs paint the Mustang mascot, preparing the wall for the district bas- ketball tournaments held here at LHS. 2 The Senior class carries out the tradition in Mrs. Newton's English Class by the play, Macbeth. Dress up day at Halloween aroused a big suspicion at who was who. Mr. Green is tickled at Daniel McMasters who threatens everyone with his ax and scares them with his face. Harley Simbeck is getting ready to compete in the Miss Ugly LHS contest, where a boy dresses as a girl and is escorted by a girl dressed as a boy. 3 BASKETBALL HOMECOMING 1988 The year of 1988 was the first year Loretto has held a Basketball homecoming. Our Mustangs played Summertown on February 16. The girls kept up their winning season while the boys just couldn't pull it off. Stephanie Gooch was our homecoming queen, she was escorted by Shannon Burks RIGHT. The homecoming activities included an ugly contest and a mini-float contest. This season there were five senior girls on the Lady Mustangs. (Left-right) Candy Story, Carla Keener, Melanie Cotton, Kim Davis, and Sherry Richardson. Shannon Burks and Dan Henkel were the only seniors to play this year. 4 TOP (left-right) Richard Shelton escorted Christy Cook, Ken Hobbs escorted Christina Elkins, Shannon Burks escorted Stephanie Gooch, Mark Rohling escorted Lea Augustin, Chad Wright escorted Tara Hollman, Patrick Daniels escorted Bridgette Dover, and David Ridgeway escorted Amy Jones. BOTTOM LEFT (Top Row, left-right) The cheerleaders for the season were Andrea Franklin, Cara Childress, Paige Williams, Sharon Henkel, Mary Smith (Middle) Mirenda Killen, Amy Dotson, Amy Dean (Bottom) Stephanie Cox. CENTER (left-right) The freshman attend- ant was Amy Jones, Bridgette Dover was the sophomore attendant, Christina Elkins was one of the senior attendants, Stephanie Gooch was our homecoming queen, Tara Hollmann and Lea Augustin were the other two attendants of the senior class, and the junior attendant was Christy Cook. BOT- TOM RIGHT One of the entries for the mini-float contest was the French float pulled by Philip Brown. We are fortunate enough this year to have three foreign exchange students, Stefan Simon, Mark Josten, Curro Alfaro. The unique personality of each of these students makes the school year 1987-1988 a novel experience for the faculty and students at Loretto High. Mark Josten comes from a middle sized town near the border of the Netherlands in Germany and is staying with the Peter Etienne family. Here at Loretto he is learning a lot of English, but he is also acquiring this awful Tennessee slang. He comes to America to get the experience of living in another culture and for the fun of it. Also his goal is to acquire a knowledge of English, He plans on telling his family that his stay here has been a nice experience, and that he had a good time and that he met quite a lot of nette leute (nice people) during that time. Mark comments that the television is okay, but it would be better if you would leave out the soap operas and the commercials. He plans on visiting the U.S. again, but he doesn't think it would be in Loretto (perhaps for a short time). He is going to take home with him a C-D player and some more electronic equipment because that is almost all they allow you to take back. As Mark's visit comes to an end he states: War eine echt schone zeit und ich glaube, dass ich die U.S.A. trotz allem vermissen werde. Stefan Simon lives with his mother in an apartment house, in a town with about 60,000 inhabitants. It is around 10 miles from Cologne, a city with 1,000,000 people. A typical school day starts at 8 o'clock and lasts until about 3 o'clock. Each day you have 8 classes and have 11 different subjects a week. He thought coming to America would be a different experience for him to learn how to live in a different society. He says the T.V. show selection here is too big and he never knows what he should watch, but you always have good movies. He doesn't like the commercials interrupting all the time. After he returns home, he will go two more years to the secondary school then he must go to the army for two years. At the end of his army training he is planning to go to the University. Stefan replies that he would want to come back during the holidays, but he has no particular plans on what he will do when he returns. As Stefan's visit comes to an end he states: Vielen dank fur die gute zeit die ich hier verbracht habe! FAR FROM THE ORDINARY Curro comes to us from Madrid, Spain and is staying with the James Rohling family while at LHS. He says that his reasons for coming are first, to speak English better, second, to spend a really fun high school year, and third, to learn a lot of new things. When asked what he missed about Spain, he replies that he misses mostly the people at home who care about him and next, the fun, Friday nights. At home there are five family members, a brother, two sisters, and his parents. His sisters are 23 and 22 and his brother is 10. When in school in Spain, Curro wakes up at 8:00 A.M. He starts to school at 9:00 A.M. Lunch is at 11:00 A.M. School begins again at 2:30 P.M. and finishes at 5:30 P.M. or 6:00 P.M. After school there is homework for the next day. After high school Curro plans to go to France and then to return to the U.S. to Kentucky or Boston to some factories where his father works. Curro has a deep respect for American girls and their crazy, straightforward attitude toward life. What he likes most is that they are unafraid to say what they think without shyness or embarrassment. For a final comment Curro says: “No me arrepiento en absoluto de haber venido uno ano a U.S.A. Me lo he pasado fenomeno, todo el mundo ha sido muy amable conmigo. Gracias a todos. 7 ■ HOMECON Angie Cox, Michael Beckman, Scott Russ, and Hope Putman, work on the Junior float on Homecoming Day. He took me home. — Tara Simbeck My cousin fixed me up with this guy. I thought 1 would have a good time, but 1 was wrong! His idea of a good time was listening to vulgar music while riding on back roads and spinning out of old rusty bridges. When he tried to spin out this time he flooded the car. So he turned off the car, lights, radio, etc. We waited a few minutes and then the car started. He was still dead set on spinning out, so that's what he did. The only problem was he forgot to turn the lights back on. He crashed into the bridge on my side! Rhonda When I got home I was so relieved because I would never have to speak to that idiot again! They were just never able to put everything in the right place at the right time. No matter how hard they tried, things just never went their way. This season was not a total loss though. Better things emerged as the season progressed. Many young players had to take the veteran positions. These youngsters did admirable jobs and they will be a good foundation to build on. It's necessary to build a winning program, and that is what the Mustangs are trying to do. With a couple more years and a few more games, they will. 69 FOOTBALL (Left-right, Back Row) Sean Williams, Anthony Roberts, Kevin Fincher, Jeremy Stutts, Anthony Russ, Terry Staggs, Shannon Kennedy, Brent Jacobs, Kevin Stanford, Wayne Gray, Dale Davis (Second Row) Chris Holt, Mark McMasters, Allen Douglas, Stephen Fisher, Herbie Hill, Patrick Daniels, Matt Brown, John Harden, Chris Reeves, Terrell Rosson, Darrell Rosson (Front Row) Mark Green, Tony Pesnell, Jamie Mattox, Jason Carter, Terry Cameron, Lee Green, Jimbo James, Bobby Roberts, Jason Brown 70 Coach Debra Earnest, (Front Row, 1-r) Tina Shelton, Tammy Ridgeway, Nikki Pennington, Christy Shelton, Shelley Story (Second Row, 1-r) Regina Hollman, Kellie James, Gina Comer, Elizabeth Hardwick (Back Row, 1-r) Samantha Moore, Sheri Price, Pam Robertson, Candy Story, Carla Keener, Kim Davis Sept. The team adjusted to a new 5-1 offense that helped them on de- fense as well. It also led to excellent blocking. They had strong hitters with a dual hitter setter with Kim and Sheri. They went to district tournament seeded second at the end of the season and was upset by third seeded, fired-up B'wood Hi team that also upset 1 seeded B'wood Acad. There was a good effort — just wasn't our night to win ' stated Mrs. Earnest. Led by their All-district player, ( Garretson, the Mustangs compiled a record of only 6- 19 but fell short on a few games that could have gone either way. The three-point shot provided added excitement to the Mustangs7 style of high- paced play. Richie Wakefield shot the eyes out of the basket with the long bomb, to gain honors as the second highest three-point shooter in the Mid-state area for much of the season. The Mustangs were very young this season, losing only two seniors to graduation; Dan Henkel and Shannon Burks. Our team will be returning a group of seniors for next yeaT that will surely be expected to make some r? waves in the district 9-AA race. 74 Jack Row) Mario Moore, Richard Shelton, Scott Carter, Shannon Burks, Dan Henkel, Richie Wakefield, Greg Garretson (Front Row) Phil looper, Harley Simbeck, Mark Buttrum, Jamie Wilson, Mike Perry — Manager 75 Shannon Burks, 1988 Mustang Senior Dan Henkel, 1988 Mustang Senior Greg Garretson breaks for good rebounding position. In J95S the first state wide girls basketball tournament was held with the winner to be recognized as the first State Champion The Loretto Lady Mustangs were the first ladies to bring home a State Championship trophy. Along with the trophy went the honor of always remembering who the first champs were The lady Mustangs again received the honor of playing in the State in '59 and 60 Although neither year were the l ady Mustangs successful in bringing a trophy home, they did have the privilege of playing on a State Tournament team. Again in ‘61 the lady Mustangs earned a spot in the State. This year they brought home a second place trophy The 62 Lady Mustangs gained a spot in the State Tournament making it five years in a row the Lady Mustangs appeared The Lady Mustangs ended the five year streak by placing third After being absent from State Tournament play for thirteen yeans, the 1975 Lady Mustangs earned a trip back They were defeated in the first game by the soon-to be State Champs, Bradley County. For the next three years the lady Mustangs returned to the Stale Tournament only to be defeated in the semi-finals by the team that would go on to win the Championship. With history repeating itself the lady Mustangs returned for five years in a row again, the team of '79 fell short of a State Championship to Humbolt by a last shot at the buzzer It took nine years of hard work before the lady Mustangs would once again be able to gain a spot in the State Tournament, but gain it they did! The 1988 Lady Mustangs took Seasonal Champs by going undefeated during seasonal district play During tournament play they became District Champs in Loretto. Regional Champs in Gallatin and back to Loretto to win the first Sub State game ever to be played at Loretto Alter winning the Sub State they were once again traveling to Murfreesboro for the State with the hopes of winning the State 30 years from the date of the first State Tournament But it wasn't to be. for the Lady Mustangs played a superb first half only to return to the court in the second half to be defeated by Gibson County The defeat not only ended a SpectaCmBT 28 5 season but also the high school careers of five seniors Candy Story, Sherry Richardson, Melanie Cotton, Kim Davis, and Carla Keener Those seniors will leave Loretto with a record of 63 22 in three years of varsity play Several of the 1988 lady Mustangs received individual awards.
