Spirit built all through the week with dress- up days and preparation for Fri- day's activities. The whole stu- dent body worked hard on the halls and floats with the Juniors winning top honors in both competitions. The Freshmen captured second in floats and the Seniors got second in the halls. 4 Introduction The Year 1984 OMING ugh The Ages Friday night's crowning of the queen, Kay Chandler, set the stage for an exciting game. Lor- etto held a tough defense all night and walked away victors, 20-16, against Alcorn Central in Mississippi. It was a great way to end a great week. Introduction 5 The Year 1984 6 Introduction The Year 1984 Loretto High School is a special place — one where students are encouraged to learn and teachers try to make the learning fun. We come to LHS and try to become a part of it; but when we leave we find that Loretto has become a part of us. No matter where one might travel or explore, a lit- tle LHS spirit goes, too. But each year, what one group has taken out, another adds back; thus, LHS lives on for- ever. After nine years as an assistant, Coach Larry White accepted his first head coaching job. With the season at its end, the slate showed 3 wins and 7 losses. A lot was learned through the season, both by a group of young players and a first-year head coach. The three wins did not come easily, each coming down to the wire and all three from out of state foes, Waterloo, Ala. 7-6 (Game 2); Alcorn Central, Miss. (Homecoming) 19-16 (Game 5) and West Limestone, Ala. 18-14 (Game 7).ft I The Waynesboro ballgame was the only game during the entire season that I was completely dissatisfied: we didn't even line up that night, said Coach White. We really had our minds set on a 500 season and the Waynesboro win could have made that possible, with only Hohenwald left on our schedule.” Our best efforts, as a team, came against Alcorn Central, Mississippi and Lexington, Alabama. Our people executed as well as 1 could have ever hoped they would for those two games, remarked White. We made two mistakes on defense against Lexington, and they scored twice; it was that simple. We played nearly flawless ball against Alcorn, and we knew it would take that kind of effort to beat that club. This season found three freshmen, Paul Carlock, Darrell Cathey, and Brent Buttrum, seeing a lot of playing time as varsity members This experience will surely be an asset next year. We'll graduate eight seniors from the squad and all will definitely be missed. Coach White had the following comments about each of his seniors: John Jacobs: The best high school lineman I have ever coached. Mitch Jones: If heart was worth 10 t a pound, this kid would be worth a million dollars. Jeff Borden: Tremendous potential, quick feet, quick hands; did a great job. Ben Kersteins: Played football only his senior year — that's unbelievable — He's a ball player. David Brown: He may be small, but he'll hit you. Jeff Bedingfield Richard Hughes: Both consistant players. Kirk Green: I wish I could have played him more — tremendous attitude. I'm excited about the athletic program at Loretto High School. Our young talent, in combination with our sophomores and juniors, offers a lot of hope for the coming years. Through the setting of individual goals for themselves and working hard to achieve them, we can accomplish anything, Coach White summed up.
