The qualifications for membership in the Beta Club are worthy character, good mentality, credible achievement and commendable attitude. Prospective members must be approved by the head of the high school. The Beta Club of Loretto High School is sponsored by Mrs. Sandy McCulough, Miss Debra Marston and Mr. Donnie K. Simbeck. This year twenty-nine new members were initiated into the club. The Beta Club always'works on a project to help someone. This year the Beta Club wanted to see if they could raise more money for St. Jude's Hospital than they did last year and succeeded by collecting over $2,000.00 for St. Jude's. The Beta's year ends with the con- vention. The 1979 convention was held in Nashville, Tennessee at the Municipal Auditorium on March 30-31. This brought the Beta Club's year to an end. Through the yearly activities of F.H.A., we endeavor to improve each member in these aspects of life. During this school year F.H.A.-F.F.A. Fall Festival, where Katherine McMasters and Chris Fleming were named Sweetheart and Beau. In celebration of Valentine's Day, we had our annual Daddy-Daughter Date Night. In April the new F.H.A. officers attended the Convention at the Opryland Hotel. On April 23, we had our Mother-Daughter Banquet. After the banquet we initiated new officers. Awards presented at the banquet: Outstanding Freshman Katherine McMasters; Outstanding Sophomore Jamie Smith; Outstanding Junior Pam Bailey; Outstanding Seniors Joan Augustin and Vickie Cobb; Miss FHA Vicki Hartsfield. Pictures were displayed from Mrs. Russ's six art classes. Several hundred people walked through the Loretto High School Gym to observe the students works. In addition to the fantastic art show Mrs. Barnett's science classes also held their first science fair. Dana Simbeck won first place in the science fair. 69 L.H.S. BAND The annual Band Concert and Band Queen Contest was held May 10, 1979 in the Loretto High School Auditorium. 71 FCA The Fellowship of Christian Athletes is an organization of Christian high school students that compete on the athletic field. Band members are also members. It is a non profit group which has meetings with guest speakers that promote a more Christian way of life. The sponsor of Fellowship of Christian Athletes is coach Bruce Hicklin. Fellowship of Christian Athletes is also the newest organization at Loretto High. The new mentor, rrtgame °°k the Mustan9s the reins in August. The team practiced in the tormenting weather up until the In the Mustangs season opener, the traveled to Hohenwaid to face the Panthers. The Mustangs never gave ■ 7, Loretto — C lost a hard defensive battle. The final score - Hohenwaid up, but The next week the Mustangs journeyed to Franklin Page looking for their first victory. The Mustangs only managed to cross the goal once. Final score — Page — 33, Lorettc - 8. n the Mustangs home opener, the team played a great defensive game and were not denied an initial victory. Senior tailback Greg Marks eluded the entire Red Devil defense on a sparl ling punt return of 64 yards and crossed the Elkmont end zone for the only score of the game. The extra point failed and when the final buzzer sounded, the Mustangs went to the showers with a 6 to 0 victory. 4| The Loretto Mustang gridders, riding high with a win under their belts, traveled to Giles County to do battle with Bobby Smith's highly rated Bobcats. The battle turned into a minor skirmish as the Bobcats plastered the Mustangs Final score Pulaski — 44, Loretto - 12. In the Mustangs second home game, the team was out for revenge after the embarrassing defeat the week before The Mustangs dented the score board first, but were not able to hold off the talented Tigers in the second half Final score: Mt. Pleasant — 14, Loretto W- 12. The following week a familiar face appeared back in Loretto. The face belonged to a one time Loretto coach by the name of Bob Edens. Coach Edens’ Tigers showed no mercy on his former team, as they rolled to an impressive victory. Final score: Lewisburg: 41, Loretto — 0. H mk d The next week the Mustangs traveled to Lexington, Ala. to battle an old-time foe. The Golden Bears rolled to a sizeable lead in the first half of their homecoming game and tfce Mustangs were unable to control the ball throughout the rain-soaked game. Final Score: Lexington 40 Loretto 0. In the Mustang's homecoming the following week, they faced the Lexington Tigers, one of the top ranked teams in the state. On the opening kickoff, senior tailback Greg Marks rambled 60 yards before being tripped up by a Tiger defender. That was as close as the Mustangs could get to the goal line, as the powerful Tiger team dominated the first half. The Mustangs made a gallant effort In the second half by coring three touchdowns, but were never able to capture the lead that they had relinquished. Final score: Lexington 4- 41, Loretto — 19. The Mustangs Journeyed to Hickman County the next week to tangle With the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs, another top- ranked team in the area, completely dominated all areas of the gar f as they rolled to a lop-sided victory. Final score: Hickman County - 30, Loretto — 7. In the Mustangs finale, the team faced Waverly who was also struggrtng through a tough season. The senior Mustangs gave an Inspired effort in their final high school football game, but the Waverly team played an errorless game as they rolled up the victory. Final score: Waverly - 20, Loretto — 0. STA YIN’ ALIVE MUSTANGS VARSITY 1978-79 . jicvc iviarK: Ray Pillows 1978-79 VERDICT The 1978-79 LHS basketball team began their season with high expectations. They began the schedule with four starters returning from last year's regional team, and more experience than any recent Mustang team. The Mustangs began their season with a stinging loss to intercounty rival — Summertown. They then reversed their trend by narrowly defeating Lexington, Ala. and Centerv The Mustangs were then stunned with three defeats in succession by Coilinwood, Brentwood, and Pulaski. e team finally got back on the winning track in a revenge contest with Summertown. The Mustangs, playing up to their capabilities and expectations for the first time all year, soundly defeated a talented Eagle outfit by twenty points. M The Mustang's dreams were short-lived as they traveled to Brentwood and the Eagles defeated the Mustangs for the second time this season. RV1 J The Mustangs then entered the Shelbyviile Christmas Tournament. In their opening game they faced the host tournament, and AAA powerhouse Shelbyviile. The Mustangs battled the Eagles to a hilt before bowi nal minutes. For the fifth consective year, Middle Tennessee's best team fell a second short of capturing a state title. The Lady Mustangs were narrowly defeated by Humbolt on a shot at the sound of the buzzer by only two points. The Lady Mustangs began their season with a new head coach, Jimmy Chance, assistants Grant and Debra Earnest, a squad of ten girls returning from last season, and managers Vickie Gillespe and Terry Lynn McMasters. The Lady Mustangs experienced a great season suffering only three losses which came at the hands of the Col I inwood Trojans and the Lewisburg Tigerettes. Along with a seasonal record of 25-4, the Lady Mustangs defeated Dickson County in the Shelbyville Christmas Tournament to gain the Championship Title. District Tournament action began at Pulaski with the Lady Mustangs meeting the Brentwood Eagles. The Lady Mustangs came out on top 69-44. This win placed the Lady Mustangs in the District finals against their old rivals, Lewisburg. The Lady Mustangs showed much class and poise and came out District Champs by defeating Lewisburg 35-32. Regional tournament action began with the Lady Mustangs paired up against Bellevue Owlettes. The Lady Mustangs breezed by the Owlettes 62-29. The Lady Mustangs then faced Brentwood Academy and the Lady Mustangs came out winners by a score of 24-14. This placed the Lady Mustangs in the Regional Finals against Lewisburg, only to conquer the Tigerettes once again. The final score was 46-45 in overtime. The Lady Mustangs traveled to Centerville for Sub- State action. The Lady Mustangs put it all together against Lexington 69-45, winning their fifth straight berth to the State Tournament. Mustang fever hit Loretto with everyone anxious to go into State Tournament action. 95 TSSAA STA TE R UNNERS UP In the semi-final action against Grundy County County 67-63. It had finally happened! The team in its second year, since baseball had once again been started at Loretto, had experience and high hopes riding their way. The team opened the season against inter-county rival Lawrencburg. The Mustang's bats were silent all day as they suffered a stinging loss. The final score: Lawrenceburg 6, Loretto 1. The Mustangs then traveled to Lewisburg to battle the Tigers. The Mustang's bats had once again decided to take a vacation, as the Mustangs were shut out for the first and only time all year. The final score: Lewisburg 10, Loretto 0. The Mustangs then went on a rampage, as they galloped past their next four opponents. The final scores of these games were: Loretto 12, Lexington 3.; Loretto 10. Centerville 6.; Loretto 15, Pulaski 9.; Loretto 5, Franklin Page 3. The Mustangs then began to be riddled by injuries, and people quitting the squad. They then dropped three out of the next four games, by scores of: T.M. Rogers 5, Loretto 1.; Loretto 11, Franklin Page 4.; Lewisburg 7, Loretto 3.; T.M. Rogers 8, Loretto 3. This concluded the Mustangs regular season with the team finishing second In the district. The Mustangs then entered the tournament at Lewisburg, Everyone was looking for them to challenge the host, for the district title. Their first opponent was Franklin Page, who they had defeated twice in the regular season. Page upset the Mustangs by a score of 7 to 6, which dropped the Mustangs into the loser's bracket. In their second game the Mustangs defeated Centerville by a score of 12 to 7 to stay alive in the tournament. Their hopes were then shattered as Page once again defeated the Mustangs by a score of 4 to 3. The Mustangs proudly ended their season with a 6 wins and 7 loss record. All district selections were — Joe Green and Tommy Dingier. THE SWINGING 100 MUSTANGS 101 LADY MUSTANGS SOFTBALL Fast Pitch Softball — Newest Game In Town This year Loretto High School for the first time fielded a girls fast pitch softball team. The team coached by Debra Earnest and assistant coach, Bruce Hicklin competed with schools such as Lawrenceburg, Columbia, Richland and Pulaski. The teams were in competition with such schools as Lawrenceburg, Centerville and Pulaski. The girls went to the District Tournament in Columbia. They played against Dickson County, Brentwood, Lawrenceburg and Lewis County.
