Ilf w IIIU MMI r' i , LORETTO HIGH LORETTO TEN 1 4% r 109 The first major highlight of the new school year began with the 1977 Fall Festival. To begin the evening, the talent show displayed an assortment of talent which ranged from a prima ballerina to a hard rock improvisation of the famous group Kiss . But as in all talent shows there can only be three winners. First place went to young Gary Franklin, who entertained the audience with his rendition of the Entertainer . Second place went to Bridgett Augustin, who gave a graceful performance. Third place went to Melissa Putman, who, accompanied by her father on the piano, sang a gospel favorite. The next major event was the crowning of the Fall Festival Sweetheart and Beau. The top honor went to Miriam Augustin and Jimmy Williams. First runner-up, Sheila Cain and Terry Beecham. Second runner-up, Tresa Kress and Mike Williams. Third runner-up, Karen Hollman and Jerry Sandlin. Then all FHA classes and Officers displayed their humorous side in various skits. The FFA boys added to the evening festivities by displaying the latest styles in their annual fashion review. Top models included: Bernice Fuller, Rachel Norwood, Tammy Roper, Charlotte Dean and Tonya Slater. To finalize the evening everyone showed their es sprit de corp by kicking their shoes off and boogieing down to good ole Blue Grass furnished by Earnest Ridgeway and boys. I3EC1NNINC§ U((IS 4 Moods are a mental disposition that can be in the form of spirit, courage, energetic humor, temper or just the blahs. The student life can reflect many moods; from seriousness to spirited jubliation. These many moods are brought out in all the faces of the students, whether engaged in enthusiasm for a spirit building activity or just looking off into nowhere. All the students add to the many moods at Loretto High School. 5 The theme of the 1977 Hoemcoming was Mustang Spirit Through the Ages. The week began a rather rainy one. Although it was wet and soggy on the outside, this didn't dampen the spirit of any of the students on the inside. Monday, the student body and the faculty members masqueraded as hillbillies. Tuesday was clown day, and the student body dressed in their clown attire. Wednesday the student body emerged from the prairie in their cowboy getup. Thursday was black and gold day at Loretto. The week ended with the student body matching the decade of their float. To add to the competition between classes, the halls were decorated on Wednesday and judged Thursday, with the Senior class triumphantly coming out with the top honor; the Junior class received 2nd place, the Freshman class took 3rd and the Sophomore class followed with a close 4th place. Thursday night the student body gathered for the annual bonfire, where the classes competed for the coveted Homecoming Spirit Stick . Once again the Senior class walked away with top honors. Friday morning was spent finishing up the many hours of hard work on the floats. The annual homecoming parade began at 1:30. The parade showed hard work and imagination with a large variety of floats. The junior float squeezed by the Seniors' float to win the top award with their airplane soaring high. The Seniors landed their flying saucer in 2nd place with the Sophomore float be-boping into 3rd place and the Freshmen taking 4th. Homecoming night was highlighted by pre-game festivities, which included the crowning of the 1977 Homecoming Queen and the well planned, decorative floats parading around the football field, the homecoming was sadly brought to a close as the Mustangs suffered a defeat at the hands of the Centerville Bulldogs. Later that night devastated fans quietly filled the dance floor to hear the sound of Spirit at the 1977 Homecoming Dance. FE§IIVIIIE§ DECISIONS Everyone comes to a certain point in life-they have to make a decision. Sometimes one has to rely on his on judgement and use determination to fulfill his hopes, his responsibilities and his dreams. The decisions we make today will decide what we will be tomorrow. We will always have to make decisions and hope for the best-for whatever we do, nothing will be perfect. Then from today comes tomorrow and yesterday will be gone but the future is just ahead. 9 The morning is awakened by the light rays of the sun peeping through the dense clustered woods. The flowing stream sparkles from the sun's rays as the birds sing lightly. An air of refreshing scent lingers in the crisp morning as another school day at Loretto High School begins. BEFIEOICNS Discoveries are made everyday, both in and out of the classroom. Someone discovers a new skill or finds a lost one. Discoveries make a tremendous addition to one's life and are very helpful in growing up. Discoveries are a major stepping stone toward the learning experience. Discoveries are also important to understanding and getting along with friends, teachers and classmates. Discoveries are a daily experience at Loretto High School and will never be forgotten. ij Everyone s feelings are shown through expressions. Expressions of love, fear and hate all add to a full personality. Expressions are shown in everyday life, whether it be at school, home, or anywhere else. People have expressions to relate their feelings. IIPK§SICNS FIIIMS No one knows where we will be or what we will be in a few years. Only the wondering mind and the freak imagination can predict the future. One's dreams and life's ambitions have a chance to come true. We strive ourselves to work toward what we really want to do. Our personalities mature and before long we are looking back at the good times. Although every day won't be perfect we always have a chance to look back at Loretto High School with warm feelings. 16 ORGANIZATIONS LORETTO HIGH SCHOOL 1977-78 Beta Club Officers President: Jamie Neidert Vice President: Jeff Methvin Secretary: Selena Newton Treasurer: Karen Robinson The Beta Club is a non-profit, leadership service organization for high school students. Late summer arrived to find the Mustangs without a head coach. Former head coach, Garner Ezell, had kicked off his coaching shoes to assume an assistant principal's job at another county high school. With the season opener less than three weeks away, a head coach had not been appointed. The '77 season almost began without a coach. From an obscure little Alabama hamlet came a young coach named Ronnie Owens. After deliverance with school officials, Owens was offered and accepted the head mentor's position while assuring the players and fans that the Mustangs would show up at every scheduled game. With the coming of Owens, the Mustangs took to the parched practice field to train in the ninety degree August sun. From the spirit and enthusiasm shown by the team, it would appear that a highly successful season would be just a punt, pass and kick away, but with a schedule that included some of the Midstate 2-A powerhouses, cautious pessimism prevailed. 94 1977 LHS Varsity Chapter One The L.H.S. Mustangs lost their hard fought opening game by a score of 31-14. The following week, with blood in their eyes and win in their hearts, the Mustangs defeated Franklin Page by a score of 14-7. The third game again found Loretto in the winner's circle as they shut out Waynesboro by a score of 15-0. But the loss of the Mustangs rabbit's foot resulted in a loss to the Pulaski Bobcats 28-7. 95 Chapter 2 The Mustangs then rallied and won their next two games. Mt. Pleasant and Lewisburg were defeated respectively with scores Loretto- 42 and Mt. Pleasant- 20. Lewisburg- 6 Mustangs- 8. Chapter 3 That ended the wins for Loretto and nothing but hard luck and defeat dogged them for the remainder of the season. Chapter 4 After losing to both Lexington, Alabama 24-8 and Lexington, Tennessee 14-6, the Mustangs were even defeated at their Homecoming Game against Centerville by a score of 28 to 15. 97 Chapter 5 But the Loretto Mustangs never gave up. They kept right on practicing for the final game of the season. 98 Chapter 6 The final game of the season against Waverly gave Loretto their worst defeat of the season. Waverly 40, Loretto 6. 99 Epilogue The Mustangs had a tough season ending with a record of 4-6. David Kimbrell 107 The 1977-78 LHS basketball team began the season with a new coach and a new outlook. They started their season off with two big victories over inter-county rival Summertown and their Alabamian neighbors Lexington. Then the Mustangs went into a tailspin and lost their next 5 games. The Mustangs ended their long drowght with a victory over Summertown before the Christmas break. The Christmas towrnament was held at Pulski and the Mustangs lost a hard fought game to Fayetteville. Coming back from the Christmas break the Mustangs lost to the Lawenceburg Wildcats in overtime. Even though the Mustangs played extremely well they failed to come out on top over Pulaski and Franklin Page. When the Mustangs met the Wildcats again they faced a more prepared Mustang team, which tappled them with a one-point victory. The Mustangs then defeated their next three opponents in successioni before being soundly defeated by Mt. Pleasant. The Mustangs were also handed another defeat by Lewisburg. The team finally got back on the winning track by defeating Cinterville and Franklin Page. The Mustangs ended their regular season with a hard fought loss to Fayettville. The Mustang team entered the District tournament with high hopes of a regional berth. In their first game they destroyed Lewisburg's hope to travel onto the regional. The regional tournament was insight for the Mustangs. This was the first time in 8 years to go to Regional Tournament. Then the Mustangs were defeated twice in a row, but this still didn't dim their regional hopes. The Mustangs traveled to Centerville for the regional tournament with hopes of advancing on in the tournament. Their hopes were crushed when they1 were soundly defeated by a powerful Bellevue team. Proudly the Mustangs ended their season with a record of 12 wins and 15 losses. All District members were Joe Green and Jackie Beavers. 108 Mustangs 109 r On The Move 110 112 CLASS OF 78 114 1 Elmer Joe Atwell Carol Lynn Augustin Miriam Therese Augustin I Timothy Lynn Augustin Roger Hubert Barnett David John Augustin Roderick Wade Barnett Janice Melinda Bassham I Anita Marie Beckman Anna Katherine Beckman I Donna Annette Benefield I Cartina Renae Berryhill Teresa Rose Carl I Mary Jane Cathey Pamela June Cain 115 Thomas Michael Conley I John Allen Creekmore I Paula Karen Daniel Charles T.
