season was shining brightly for the Loretto Mustangs. With fifteen seniors returning to lead the team, every- one believed a good season to be inevitable. It proved to be a great one. The Mustangs ran over and through their opponents to rack up nine vic- tories and give the gridiron Mustangs their first unblemished regular season. With Roger Huskey crashing open the middle with Don Ezell, later voted most valuable player and S.T.C. Player of the year, racing to the outside, the teams ground attack was more than formidable. The de- fense held opponents during close games and provided the of- fense with unlimited chances to score. The 75 Mustangs added a new twist to their offense. They went airborne. Kevin Williams, who chalked up more than 1000 yards in pass- ing and rushing, re- peatedly picked out Randall Gallion and Bob Bosheers for complete passes. When the ground attack ground down, the Mustang aerial exibition threw op- ponents into a panic. On several occasions passing proved to be the main factor in victory. A 21-0 victory over Columbia Military Academy introduced the unparalleled season on September 5 in Loretto. The Mustangs followed their initial victory by defeating Waynesboro 31-0, and then rolled over the Hohenwald Panthers 28-19. The Pulaski Bobcats, a long-time rival, traveled to Loretto, Sept. 26 looking for an easy victory but were trampled by the Mustangs 21-7. Mt. Plea- sant was no luckier, and fell to the Mustangs 14-6. Halfway through the season Loretto stood 5-0 and fans starting talking about an undefeated season. On October 10 the Mustangs traveled to Franklin Page looking for a challenge but instead came home with a 31-7 victory and a clenched S.T.C. championship. In a freezing October night the Mustangs edged out the Golden Bears of Lexing- ton 6-0 to capture a Homecoming victory. October 24 the Mus- tangs slipped past Alabama's defending State Champion 21-20 in Rogersville. To polish off the perfect season, Loretto scored a 3-0 victory over T.M. Rogers in Green hill, Alabama. Alabama. With post- season bowl-bound enthusiasm, the Mustangs traveled to Lawrenceburg to face an underrated Chapel Hill varsity in the Crockett Bowl. Before a sell- out crowd the Loretto team had un- savory taste of defeat at the hands of un- derdog Rockets. The surprising upset gave the Mustangs their only defeat of the season. Although there will be many more games and many more seasons the Mustang players and fans will never forget the fall of 75 and the thrill of an undefeated regular season. 83 MUSTANGS MOVING ON '75 MUSTANGS ROW 1-V. In their second encounter with Lewisburg, after only beating them by 2 in their first showing, the Lady Mustangs fell behind in the final seconds and could not manage to regain the lead. Recovering from their loss, the Lady Mustangs trotted past their next three opponents. In the final game of the regular season, Campbells- vilie's Lady Bears shaded the Lady Mustangs by only two points. The Lady Mustangs finished their regular season with a 15-2 record. In the opening game of the District Tournament held in Pulaski, the Lady Mustangs went up against their old foe, the Pulaski Bobkittens. The Bobkittens froze the ball for almost the entire game, but could not hold up against the Lady Mustangs, the final score was 15-13, double overtime. In the second game, the Lady Mustangs met Lewis- burg for the third time. The Lewisburg Tigerettes proved to be the gallant team, and the Mustangs suf- fered their third defeat of the year. In the Regional Tournament, the Lady Mustangs romped past Camden with the final score 69-36. In the second game of the Regionals, Hillwood fell short and the Lady Mustangs went on to the finals. In their fourth match against Lewisburg, the Lady Mustangs played a tough and tight game and came out on top as the Regional Champions. Next came Substate. The Lady Mustangs didn't even take a deep breath as they rolled past Memphis Bis- hop Byrnes 92-36. The Lady Mustangs were off to State. But once again, it was their fate to fall short of the State crown, but not without a hard fought battle. The Lady Mustangs opened the tournament against the Ooltewah Lady Owls. Loretto never led until the final quarter. They were down 13-8 at the end of the first quarter. After slicing a margin of 14-8 to 14-13, Loretto once again fell behind by as much as six points, but managed to pull back within two at half time. In typical Loretto fashion, they still had the final 14 minutes of play to echo some of their last half come- backs, and they did. After dropping behind 27-21, the suddenly inspired Lady Mustangs sprang back with some intimidating defense and strong positioning around the backboards. Momentum was now swayed in the favor of the Lady Mustangs. Even a series of time-outs by Ooltewah's coach could not stop the gold-clad lassies. Canning four more baskets and hitting all eight foul shot attempts, the victory belonged to the forces of Coach Jerry Taylor and assistant. Garner Ezell. Loretto moved to the semi-finals. 98 LADY MUSTANGS SPARKLE IN STATE TAKE IT TO THE LIMIT In the semi-finals, Loretto met their long time foe, Lewisburg, for the fifth time this year. Loretto challanged Lewisburg and fought their district 11 foe to the hilt before bowing, 49-44. The game was a heart-stopper, with Lewisburg leading most of the way, but never able to put down the Lady Mustangs. With Lewisburg holding the ball, patiently working for each shot, its best offense became its defense. The fourth quarter was a battle that had many of the 2758 fans on the edge of their seats or standing most of the way. In the last 20 seconds Loretto pulled within 1 point, but was forced to foul and Lewisburg connected at the foul line. The Lady Mustangs were doomed. After the game everyone was heartbroken, but they were proud of their accomplishments. They ended their season with an impressive 21-4 record. 100 Once again the Lady Mustangs must look to the future remem- bering what has happened in the past, and know that another berth in the TSSAA tourney is within their grasp. 1976 BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM FIRST ROW Frank Bush Randall Gellion Don Ezell Tim Ezell SECOND ROW Kevin Williams Ronnie Newton Dewayne Glass John Cathy THIRD ROW Reggie Newton Dickie Hensley Randy Blair Joe Geeen 101 o ATHLETIC BANQUET Kevin Williams joins the 1000 Yard Club. GRADUATION 1976 Mr. Urban introduces Mr. Plaskett. m A HAPPY MOMENT FOR SOME A SAD MOMENT FOR OTHERS 175 Love and special thanks to the following people for their help and encouragement in creating this yearbook. To Mark for opening the door to yearbook; to the Florence Times Tri-Cities Daily for use of scenic photo- graphs; to the students and teachers at Loretto High School for living the events which this yearbook depicts; to friends for being themselves and putting up with me and my dears , peanuts and unfriendly looks; to the Retrospect staff for making it all come true, especially Andy for doing the better part of the introduction and; most of all to Mr. Brown for always being there and for always showing me the right direction. Few people realize the immense amount of time and work our adviser must give to a yearbook. Without his advice and photographic work this wouldn't be possible. To those of you who have been a part of this year at L.H.S., I hope this yearbook brings you happiness as it helps you remember throughout the years. OoiSHut
