THE 1973 YEARBOOK STAFF Met a • mor ’fo • sis WEBSTER'S COLLEGIATE DICTIONARY defines metamorphosis in the following ways: 1. Change of form structure, or substance, especially by witch- craft or magic. 2. A striking alteration in appear- ance, character, or circumstances. 3. Zool. A marked and more or less abrupt change in the form or structure of an animal during post-embryonic de- velopment. These are definitions and the ground- work for explanation of metamorphosis. r, For the zoologist, metamorpho- sis describes the transformations a creature goes through in its growth to an adult. For us, meaning me, it can be used in a similar way, yet in a much deeper sense. These changes delve into all aspects of our minds and souls. 3 Transferences in one's outward appearance do not always indicate an actual change. In order for a person to change, there must be a renewal of his character or feelings, not just a mien of such a renewal. Metamorphosis is not merely a change; it is a transfiguration - a complete alteration. And the al- teration is not gradual; it is abrupt and blinding. . . 6 .but the results are visible. One life seemingly becomes another. The one replaced is stored in the closet of used existences, waiting its turn to perhaps, one day, return to its rightful place. 7 • An insect metamorphoses through nature's own powers, but the stockpile of concepts and matter created by man must gain meta- morphosis through his hands. These products will only see renewal when their master accomplishes a change within himself, and then, only when he is willing to potray this change. Teachers appear as the witches who cast their spells on education and turn it into an ugly training pro- cess. Statesmen become the magi- cians who say the magic words and make democracy vanish, returning it as aristocracy. 10 But such modulations are mere- ly beneficial to alternative changes and offer a'catalyst for reactions which drive the ever whirling wheels of Change. A young person, You, was then presented with the same question. You replied, I won't change because I know what I am and I am what I am. It can't happen here. You know it, You. But you are mistaken. Your surroundings and relations continually revamp and cause you to resolve many ideas, attitudes, and feelings. One unexpected event may transfigure your entire lifestyle. Don't fight it, You; it's all for the better. ( 13 ri tpG would like to recognize here the years of dedicated service given Loretto High by Mrs. au ia uss. 1 hough it is but a page in a book, we feel that she realizes our appreciation for her years of help and service. 14 DEDICATION We, the yearbook staff of 1973 wish to dedicate the 1973 edition of the Mustang to Mr. Raymond Russ. Mr. Russ has served Loretto High in several capacities for 30 years. Rare is the day at Loretto when an unkind word is spoken of our dedicated history teacher. Always kind and willing to help, Mr. Russ is in the opinion of the staff, indeed deserving of this dedication. Therefore, if you think that you are deserving of recognition here, you have my most sincere thanks. My last thought as 1 close this book is of next year's editor. I have been the most fortunate of persons this year because of the kindness and thoughtfulness of a person who belittled each problem as it arose.
