It is hoped that during your stay here at Loretto you will have acquired the knowledge and experience which will enable you to make the decisions that are most beneficial to you and your community. May you also assume the responsibilities and leadership of a responsible citizen, and hopefully your energy will be diverted toward making this universe a better place in which to live. DEBBIE HOLLIS WHITE I believe it will be found that those who marry late are best pleased with their children; and those who marry early, with their partners. PHYLLIS MARIE WHITLEY Lord, I do fear thou'st made the world too beautiful this year. DAVID WALTER WILLIAMS In the order named, these are the hardest to control: Wine, women, and song. WANDA GAIL WILLIAMS When you meet a man, you judge him by his clothes; when you leave, you judge him by his heart. 42 Class History In 1968. 168 lively students came to Loretto High School from Loretto, Five Points, St. Joe. Iron City, Liberty Grove, West Point, Sacred Heart, and Leoma. That year we had to choose our sponsors. We chose Mrs. Rose Russ and Mr. Robert Green. As President of the Freshman Class we chose Cathy Scott; Vice-President - Wade Farris; Secretary - Meredith Marston; Treasurer - Ricky Miller. For our superlatives we chose as Mr. and Miss Class - Meredith Marston and Paul Kress; Wittiest - Nell Hargrove and Gerald Smith; Most Studious - Doris Barnett and David Odem; Best-all-around - Sharon Gifford and Wade Farris; Most School Spirit - Phyllis Rushing and Eddie Beckman; Most Athletic - Glenda Green and Charles Morton. Our Homecoming attendant was Margie Lamprecht. This was the year that Donie Simbeck became principal of Loretto High. Cathy Scott and Margie Lamprecht were runners-up for the FFA Sweetheart. In 1969, 140 students had survived their freshman year to start back as sophomores at Loretto High School. We chose as our President Wade Farris; Vice-President - Don- nie Weathers; Secretary - Cathy Scott; Treasurer - Meredith Marston. For our class superlatives this year we chose as Mr. and Miss Class - Sharon Gifford and Van Johnson; Best-all-around - Janelle Fisher and David Odem; Most Studious - Meredith Marston and Charles Thomas; Most School Spirit - Peggy Neidert and Wade Farris; Most Beauti- ful Girl and Most Handsome Boy - Pam Kizer and Tony Sandy; Most Athletic - Martha Horn and Charles Morton. Meredith Marston was the sophomore attendant to the Home- coming Queen. Margie Lamprecht and Phyllis Rushing were the sophomore cheerlead- ers. Styles were changing. The maxi, which got many disapproving looks from the boys, was here to stay. Only 135 students returned to start their junior year. We chose as our President Charles Thomas; Vice-President - David Odem; Secretary-Treasurer - Mike Newton. Mr. and Miss Class were Sharon Gifford and Robbie Beard; Best-all-around - Bonnie Newton and Mike Newton; Best-looking - Doris Barnett and Kenneth Flatt; Most School Spirit - Dottie Springer and Steve Looney; Most Studious - Meredith Marston and Keith Birdyshaw; Most Athletic - Martha Horn and Charles Morton. Our cheerleaders were Margie Lamprecht and Cathy Scott; our Homecoming attendants were Gail Williams and Glenda Green. Phyllis Rushing was Girls’ State Representative. Boys’ State Repre- sentatives were Charles Thomas, Eddie Beckman, and Wade Farris. For the first time girls were allowed to wear ant suits. We still had maxis, but the midi had taken its place. One hundred and sixteen seniors started their last and most important year in a com- pletely new school with a new principal, Mr. Carl Urban. Officers for this year were President - Charles Thomas; Vice-President - Donnie Weathers; Secretary - Margie Lamprecht; Treasurer - Bud Townsend; Reporter - Charles Morton. Meredith Marston and Charles Thomas were chosen as Mr. and Miss LHS. Superlatives were Most School Spirit, Girl - Glenda Green; Best-looking - Anita Cox and Donnie Weathers; Friend- liest - Cathy Scott and David Odem; Wittiest - Gary Ezell and Rona Perry; Most Stu- dious - Patty McGee and Keith Birdyshaw; Most Popular - Patti Hardwick and Charles Morton; Best-all-around - Bonnie Newton and Robbie Beard. Our Homecoming Queen was Martha Horn and her senior attendants were Anita Cox and Margie Lamprecht. Our DAR representative was Meredith Marston. The Valedictorian was Phyllis Rushing; Salutatorian was Gail Gieske. Eddie Beckman, Ron Hartsfield, Keith Birdyshaw, and Martha Horn were selected to attend the Science and Humanities Symposium. Maxis and midis were still in style, but what was turning the boys' heads were hot pants. A Special Thank You to Mrs. Helen Beckman who has given herself in friend- ship and in dedicated devotion to the students of Loretto High School. It consists of stu- dents enrolled in VOE and is called the Tennessee Office Edu- cation Club. The club sold Torn Wat” products to make money toward buying supplies for the classes. At Christmas the TOEC members went carol- ing in Loretto. They helped create the Christmas spirit in the sick and elderly. Another highlight of the year was the Valentine party which everyone enj oyed. The Student Council is an organ- ization whose primary purpose is to relate the feelings of the students to the faculty in an effort to improve the communication that will lead to a better understanding between the two. This year the Student Council has undertaken various pro- jects and provided occasional enter- tainment in order to promote the general welfare of the school morale. It is hoped that each student has been given a better opportunity to share in the responsibilities and par- ticipate in the decision making at Loretto High. 56 The Science Club of Loretto High School is an affiliate of the National Science Clubs of Americh and an associate mem- ber of the Tennessee Junior Acad- emy of Science. Annually, the Science Clubs of America par- ticipate in a Science Talent Search, sponsored by Westing- house, in which all outstanding seniors are encouraged to com- pete. Also, this year, interested students were made aware of such programs as NASA-NSTA Youth Science Congress. Four Science Club members were selected to attend the Junior Science and Humanities Symposium at the University of Tennessee this spring. They were Keith Birdy- shaw, Martha Horn, Ron Harts- field, and Eddie Beckman. 55 Publications Staff This year, for the first time in fourteen years, Loretto High had a school paper. Mem- bers of the BLACK AND GOLD BANNER, under the sponsorship of Mrs. Cariotta Wright, work- ed hard all year long as they rushed to meet the too soon deadlines. Hours of tiring labor were spent gathering news to interest the stu- dents and to present their views to the whole. The paper certainly gave an added interest to school. 54 Photography Club With interest in photography on its present level, many students found an outlet for this interest in the Photography Club. Directed by Mr. Don Simbeck, the members were instruct- ed in the fundamental processes in the vast field of photography. They gained valuable experience by taking pictures for the Black and Gold Banner and other organizations. 52 qnjj ddj Language This year members of the Language Club were French, Latin, and German students. The club, through its monthly meetings, helped create a greater interest in and understanding of the people and places studied. On May 4, we enjoyed a pic- nic at David Crockett Park. We would like to give special thanks for our successful year to Mrs. Beck- man, our tireless sponsor. 49 The FTA met monthly this year under the direction of Mrs. Newton and Mr. Thomas. In April, several members attended the State Conven- tion in Cookeville. To raise money for this trip and for a scholarship to be given to a deserving senior, some of the members presented a musi- cal comedy program. On May 2, the chaotic picnic was enjoyed by many. They attended the FHA Subregional meeting, held the annual Fall Festival, and prepared fruit baskets for the hospital patients during the fall months. The FHA bought presents for underprivileged children, gave a Christmas tea for the faculty, and participated in the Open House to fill the winter months. In the sdrnq, members attended FHA Day, held a beauty pageant, skating party, and helped with the Athletic Banquet. The year was cli- maxed by the Mother-Daughter Banquet in May. 45 Officers The FFA this year has been busy with members participating in the Varsity Visit in Knoxville. Six boys also attended the State Fair to form judging teams. Billy Lancaster represented the Loretto FFA and won first place in the rafter cutting at the skills contest. Several members attended the State FFA Convention at Nashville during May. 41 In Washington, D.C. Outstanding Junior 4-H Girl 4-H Awards Banquet Grand Champion Share- The-Fun entry 40 Angie wins public speaking contest Dusty and Barbara at Leadership Course 39 The 4-H Club has participated in more activities this year than in previous years. Members from the club attended the Citizenship Short Course in Washington D.C. The Loretto 4-H'ers participated in the Share-the-Fun Contest with a singing group. They placed first and were chosen to compete in the district contest. The club is justly proud of its member who won first place in the county-wide Senior Public Speaking Contest. Several members also attended the annual achievement banquet. 38 Though hindered by a lack of funds this year, the Beta Club has carried on with its monthly meet- ings. The program chairman pro- vided several good ideas such as a film on fulfilling jobs and social codes for the model Beta member. Several members enjoyed attending the state convention in Nashville where they found the weather a lit- tle chilly for shopping. This spring they also had their annual picnic at David Crockett Park. The Betas wish to salute Miss Jordan for the time and effort she spent with the club.
