PiuvCif Ctt'$ Uessaqe Never before has any group faced the world with such a chal- lenge. Man has used his intelligence to create instruments which do the work of many men. He has increased his life expectancy, found cures for diseases, and transplanted human organs. He has sent men to the moon and developed controls over insects and other pests. Y et much remains as a challenge for you. While our astronauts circle the moon, our soldiers die in Viet Nam. While human hearts are being transplanted, crime is increasing in our streets and riots are creating turmoil on our campuses. While technicians are building more elaborate automobiles, millions of Americans are dying on our highways. By the use of chemicals in modern technology, the world in which we live is being polluted. Man may be creating a world in which he cannot survive. These are some of the challenges which face you today. It is the purpose of our schools to prepare you to face these problems as Americans have done in the past. We feel confident that you will meet this challenge. 7
